The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with active and passive constrained-layer damping has been investigated to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, multi-layer laminated beams. The damping ratio and modal damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with active control.

To suppress vibration and noise of mechanical structures piezoelectric ceramics play an increasing role as effective, simple and light-weighted damping devices as they are suitable for sensing and actuating. Out of the various piezoelectric damping methods this paper compares mode based active control strategies to passive shunt damping for thin plates. Therefore, a new approach for the optimal placement of the piezoelectric sensors/actuators, or more general transducers, is proposed after intense theoretical investigations based on the Kirchhoff kinematical hypotheses of plates; in particular, modal and nilpotent transducers are discussed in detail. Based on the proposed distribution a discrete design for modal transducers is implemented, tested and verified on an experimental setup. For active control the modal sensors clearly identify the eigenmodes, whereas the modal actuators impose distributed eigenstrains in order to reduce the transverse plate vibrations. In contrast to the modal control, passive shunt damping works without requiring additional actuators or auxiliary power and can therefore act as an autonomous system, but it is less effective compensating the flexible vibrations. Exemplarily, an acryl glass plate disturbed by an arbitrary force initialized by a loudspeaker is investigated. Comparing the different methods their specific advantages are highlighted and a significant broadband reduction of the vibrations of up to -20dB is obtained.

Active control of flexural vibrations of smart laminated composite beams has been carried out using piezoceramic sensor/actuator and viscoelastic material. The beams with passive constrained layer damping have been analyzed by formulating the equations of motion through the use of extended Hamilton's principle. The dynamic characteristics such as damping ratio and modal damping of the beam are calculated for various fiber orientations by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity.

Attaching a piezoelectric transducer to a vibrating structure, and shunting it with an electric circuit, gives rise to different passive, semi-passive, and semi-active control techniques. This paper attempts to review the research related to structural vibration control, via passive, semi-passive, and semi-active control methods. First, the existing electromechanical modeling is reviewed, along with the modeling methods. These range from lumped parameters, to distributed parameters modeling of piezostructural systems shunted by electrical networks. Vibration control laws are then discussed, covering passive, semi-passive, and semi-active control techniques, which are classified according to whether external power is supplied to the piezoelectric transducers, or not. Emphasis is placed on recent articles covering semi-passive and semi-active control techniques, based upon switched shunt circuits. This review provides the necessary background material for researchers interested in the growing field of vibration damping and control, via shunted piezostructural systems.
Continuously controlled semi-active suspension system may improve ride and handling properties. Here, as a mechanism to control the fluid flow solenoid valve mechanism is introduced and added to the basic passive damper to create damping forces of the shock absorbers. The system may produce continuously controlled damping forces in both solenoid valve only and combination with passive shock absorber including fluid flow is studied, and then the combined model is added to the full vehicle model to evaluate its ride and handling performance. Finally, the simulation results are compared to the vehicle models having similar suspension system.
The flexural vibration of aluminum beams with active and passive constrained-layer damping has been investigated experimentally to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity. Piezoelectric film is used as sensor and piezoceramic as actuator for negative velocity feedback control. This paper shows the effectiveness of active constrained-layer damping treatment through experiment, and we have carried out an experiment to study effect of beam thickness.
Negative stiffness, previously emulated by active or semi-active control for cable vibration mitigation, is realized passively using a self-contained highly compressed spring, the negative stiffness device (NSD).The NSD installed in parallel with a viscous damper (VD) in the vicinity of cable anchorage, enables increment of damper deformation during cable vibrations and hence increases the attainable cable damping. Considering the small cable displacement at the damper location, even with the weakening device, the force provided by the NSD-VD assembly is approximately linear. Complex frequency analysis has thus been conducted to evaluate the damping effect of the assembly on the cable; the displacement-dependent negative stiffness is further accounted by numerical analysis, validating the accuracy of the linear approximation for practical ranges of cable and NSD configurations. The NSD is confirmed to be a practical and cost-effective solution to improve the modal damping of a cable provided by an external damper, especially for super-long cables where the damper location is particularly limited. Moreover, mathematically, a linear negative stiffness and viscous damping assembly has proven capability to represent active or semi-active control for simplified cable vibration analysis as reported in the literature, while in these studies only the assembly located near cable anchorage has been addressed. It is of considerable interest to understand the general characteristics of a cable with the assembly relieving the location restriction, since it is quite practical to have an active controller installed at arbitrary location along the cable span such as by hanging an active tuned mass damper. In this paper the cable frequency variations and damping evolutions with respect to the arbitrary assembly location are then evaluated and compared to those of a taut cable with a viscous damper at arbitrary location, and novel frequency shifts are observed. The characterized complex frequencies presented in this paper can be used for preliminary damping effect evaluation of an adaptive passive or semi-active or active device for cable vibration control.

Older or damaged structures can require significant retrofit to ensure they perform well in subsequent earthquakes. Supplemental damping devices are used to achieve this goal, but increase base shear forces, foundation demand, and cost. Displacement reduction without increasing base shear is possible using novel semi-active and recently-created passive devices, which offer energy dissipation in selected quadrants of the force-displacement response. Combining these devices with large, strictly passive energy dissipation devices can offer greater, yet customized response reductions. Supplemental damping to reduce response without increasing base shear enables a net-zero base shear approach. This study evaluates this concept using two incremental dynamic analyses (IDAs) to show displacement reductions up to 40% without increasing base shear, more than would be achieved for either device alone, significantly reducing the risk of response exceeding the unaltered structural case. IDA results lead to direct calculation of reductions in risk and annualized economic cost for adding these devices using this net-zero concept, thus quantifying the trade-off. The overall device assessment and risk analysis method presented provides a generalizable proof-of-concept approach, and provides a framework for assessing the impact and economic cost-benefit of using modern supplemental energy dissipation devices.
Active vibration control of laminated composite plates has been carried out to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity, using piezoceramic sensor/actuators and passive constrained-layer damping treatment. The equations of motion are derived for symmetrical, multi-layer laminated plates. The damping ratio(ζ) and modal damping(2ζ$\omega$) of the first bending and torsional modes are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method for both passive and active vibration control. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite plate under structural vibrations.
Stay cables, such as are used in cable-stayed bridges, are prone to vibration due to their low inherent damping characteristics. Several methods have been proposed and implemented to mitigate this problem, though each has its limitations. Recently some studies have shown that active and semiactive control system using MR (Magnetorheological) damper can potentially achieve both higher performance levels than passive control system and adaptability with few of the detractions. However, a control system including a power supply, controller, and sensors is required to maximize the performance of the MR damper and this complicated control system is not effective to most of large civil structures. This paper proposes a smart passive damping system using MR dampers by introducing electromagnetic induction (EMI) system as an external power source to MR damper and verified the performance of smart passive damping system for mitigating the vibration of stay cables. The performances of smart passive damping system are compared with those of linear viscous damper and passive-mode MR damper.
