  • Acrylic resins (HSCs : EA/EMA/2-HEMA/CLA) which contain 80% solid content were synthesized by the copolymerization of monomers (ethyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and functional monomer (caprolactone acrylate : CLA) which improves the crosslinking density and physical properties of films. The physical properties of the prepared acrylic resins (HSCs) containing CLA, are as follows: viscosity 1440$^{\sim}$2630 cps ; $M_n$ 1590$^{\sim}$1660 ; and conversions, 81$^{\sim}$86%, respectively. From the correlation of $T_g$ values, viscosities, and $M_n$ of the HSCs, it was found thst viscosity and $M_n$ increased with $T_g$ value.

  • Dr. Walter Wright first presented the results of his studies on acrylic resins in July, 1937. The use of resins for adaptation in inlay and crown and bridge prosthesis was first reported in June 1940 by Harris. There has been now and acceptable list of several physical and mechanical properties of acrylic resins which have been studied to a considerable extent by various researchers, or determined from clinical experience. They include; pleasant esthetics, taste, odor, cleanliness, compatibility with oral tissue, dimensional stability, water sorption by imbibition, hardness, ease and success of repair, weight, thermal coefficient of expansion and strength to resist functional stress. The author carried a series of experiments forward to check the strength. Specimens which were cured at boiling temperature showed weaker strength than those ones which were cured at 72℃.

  • In this study, prepared synthesis waterborne acrylic resin and water soluble milk casein resin. And than extent of casein contents in acrylic resin. We measured property of these samples by Lamb leather which is coated by acrylic-casein resins. According to measure data for solvent resistance, WAR resin and Hybrid resins had good property. Among this result knew that increase of casein constant did not influence to big change of hybrid resin property. As test of tensile strength, WAR had lowest strength($1.399kg_f/mm^2$) and WAC-3 had highest strength($1.426kg_f/mm^2$). Also we knew that best property of abrasion was WAC-3(69.774 mg.loss). In elongation case, WAR had best property(820%) in this experiment.

  • The present study quantitates the in vitro cytotoxicity of a variety of denture base acrylic resins using cell culture techniques combined with image analysis to measure nuclear area and DNA contents. In this study, a comparison was made among direct curing, heat curing and microwave curing resins. The results obtained from this study were as follows : 1. Morphologically, cell process and nucleus became prominent but macroscopic difference according to the resins were nit observed. In addition, increased cellular density around the specimen were observed. 2. In DNA contents measurements, $S-G_2M$ phase cell was 15.47%, 14.58% in control and heat curing resin on 1st day and the others group $21.39\sim33.36%$ were measured. 3. Nuclear area and DNA contents were increased on 3rd day except DNA content of the microwave curing resin group. These results suggest that denture base acrylic resins stimulate gingival fibroblasts in vitro, especially stimulation of direct curing resin is larger and longer than the others.

  • Acrylic quarternary polymers were synthesized to prepare high-solid coatings. Acrylic resins were synthesized by the radical polymerization of n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate. From the results of experiment on reaction condition to get high-solid acrylic resins with 70% solid content and viscosity of 1200cps, it was found that di-tert-amyl peroxide among the four types of initiators have lower viscosity and higher degree of conversion. The optinum initiator amount, chain transfer agent, reaction temperature and the dropping time were 5wt%, 4wt%, $150^{\circ}C$ and 5hrs, respectively.

  • In this study, acrylic resins with solids content of 75% were prepared by addition polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) monomers. At this time, the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the acrylic resin was changed to 20, 30 and $40^{\circ}C$, and the hydroxyl value (OH value) was changed to 60, 90 and 120. As a result, the viscosity of acrylic resin increased with increasing $T_g$ and hydroxyl (OH) value. The synthesized acrylic resin was designed to have a high cross-link density to maintain high elasticity and high durability. The crosslinked acrylic resin was used to prepare an acrylic urethane clear coating by curing reaction with a block isocyanate (Desmodur BL-3175). The physical properties of the clear paints were analyzed by measuring viscosity, adhesion, pencil hardness and $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss. Acrylic urethane clear coatings were prepared as specimens and evaluated for various properties to be applied as top coatings for coil coating. The prepared coatings were excellent in adhesion, excellent in $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss and pencil hardness, and eco-friendly.

  • In order to prepare high-solid coatings, first acrylic resins (HSAs) which contain 80% solid were synthesized, and then the prepared resins were cured with isocyanate at room temperature. In the synthesis of HSAs, viscosity, number average molecular weight $(M_n)$ and conversion were $1372{\sim}2700$ cps, $1520{\sim}1650$ and $83{\sim}87%$, respectively. Among the four kinds of initiators used, tert-amylperoxy-2-ethyl hexanoate was the most proper one in the synthesis of HSAs. With increasing $T_g$ values, viscosity increased rapidly and molecular weight increased slowly. As a result of the examination of coated films, it was found that $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss, impact resistance, heat resistance and cross-hatch adhesion were good, and pencil hardness, drying time and pot life were poor.

  • The catalytic effects of carboxylic acid and dibutyltin dilaurate(DBTL) on the curing rate of acrylic polyol with isocyanate prepolymer were investigated. In this work reaction of a biuret type aliphatic isocyanate with acrylic polyol follows the second order reaction in the thin film state. Carboxylic acid of acrylic polyol has a strong catalytic effect on the isocyanate groups and influences greatly on curing rate, also DBTL is more effective catalysis on acrylic polyol without carboxylic acid than with carboxylic acid.

  • Silyl group-containing acrylic resins were synthesized to prepare weather resistant coatings. Acrylic copolymer was synthesized by the addition copolymerization of n-butyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate and 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTS). Acrylic copolymer were synthesized such that their $T_g$'s were adjusted to $20^{\circ}C$ and their MPTS contents were varied to 10, 20 and 30 wt%. As the content of MPTS increased, viscosity of coatings increased and thermal stability at the high temperature was improved. Coatings was prepared by blending the synthesized resins with a white pigment. The adhesion performance of coatings was superior with various substrates and their other properties were on the whole suitable. Weatherability was tested by outdoor exposure test, WOM test and QUV test. It was proved that resin with 30 wt% MPTS was suitable as the binder for weather resistant coatings.
