Practical applicable model for estimating the carbonation depth in fly-ash based concrete structures by utilizing adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system

  • Concrete carbonation is a prevalent phenomenon that leads to steel reinforcement corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, thereby decreasing their service life as well as durability. The process of carbonation results in a lower pH level of concrete, resulting in an acidic environment with a pH value below 12. This acidic environment initiates and accelerates the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete, rendering it more susceptible to damage and ultimately weakening the overall structural integrity of the RC system. Lower pH values might cause damage to the protective coating of steel, also known as the passive film, thus speeding up the process of corrosion. It is essential to estimate the carbonation factor to reduce the deterioration in concrete structures. A lot of work has gone into developing a carbonation model that is precise and efficient that takes both internal and external factors into account. This study presents an ML-based adaptive-neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) approach to predict the carbonation depth of fly ash (FA)-based concrete structures. Cement content, FA, water-cement ratio, relative humidity, duration, and CO2 level have been used as input parameters to develop the ANFIS model. Six performance indices have been used for finding the accuracy of the developed model and two analytical models. The outcome of the ANFIS model has also been compared with the other models used in this study. The prediction results show that the ANFIS model outperforms analytical models with R-value, MAE, RMSE, and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency index values of 0.9951, 0.7255 mm, 1.2346 mm, and 0.9957, respectively. Surface plots and sensitivity analysis have also been performed to identify the repercussion of individual features on the carbonation depth of FA-based concrete structures. The developed ANFIS-based model is simple, easy to use, and cost-effective with good accuracy as compared to existing models.

Varietal Difference of Growth Response to Soil Acidity in Soybean (토양산도에 따른 대두생육반응의 품질간 차이)

  • To obtain basic information concerning the soybean cultivar differences of physiological and ecological responses to soil pH to select and breed stably higher yielding cultivars, and to improve cultural management of soil differing in pH, the responses of soybean plants in growth, grain yield, nodule formation and its activity, and major chemical compositions of soybean plants were investigated using six cultivars and two levels of soil pH 5 and 7 of the pot and field experimental soil in Suwon, 1985. Acidic soil condition suppressed overall vegetative growth of soybean plants and thereby decreased stem length, number of nodes, leaf area, dry weight of the plants, root activity, nodulation and nodule activity, the content of allantoin nitrogen, total nitrogen, phosphorous, calcium, and magnesium of the plants. Due to the such responses of soybean plants to the acid soil, grain yield also decreased along with less grains per plant. However, the little difference in growth and yield of the cultivar Janbaeglcong in response to soil pH is considered to be a good source of breeding materials tolerant to acidic soil condition. In this regard Bongeui and Oialkong also were relatively stable in the growth and grain yield under the different soil acidity conditions.

Characterization of Optimum Conditions Affecting on Multi-Color Dyeing of Cut Rose (Rosa hybrida 'Akito') (절화장미(Rosa hybrida 'Akito') 복색염색에 미치는 몇 가지 요인의 최적조건 구명)

  • This experiment was conducted to examine the ideal condition for multiple colors dyeing of cut rose, 'Akito'. Four different colors of dye were applied to make multiple flower colors in cut rose by absorption method. Acidic condition around pH 3.5 showed the fastest absorption speed in all four colors. There is no difference at each pH levels, at part of leaves dyeing, it is more affected colors rather than pH levels in purple and blue colors. From vary concentration of each dyes, $10g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ concentration of dyeing solution gave the best color definition. But it's not significant and result was different by each color in a same concentration. 10 minutes of dyeing performed pastel color and 30 minutes performed the best color definition, but the 30 minutes treatment accompanied with significant dyeing on the leaves also. As a result of this experiment, optimum condition for dyeing cut rose, 'Akito' requires pH 3.5, $5-10g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of dye concentration and 10-30 minutes treatment.

Characteristics of Elements Extraction in Waste Rocks on the Abandoned Jangpoong Cn Mine (장풍 동광산 폐광석 내 원소의 용출 특성)

  • In order to evaluate the geochemical behaviors of elements with waste rocks in the abandoned Jangpoong Cu mine area, total concentration analysis and leaching experiments were performed. The content of elements within waste rocks compared with background values decreased in order of As>>Cu>Pb>Cd>Co. Leaching experiments were carried out at various extraction environments, considering the acid rain ($0.00001{\sim}0.001N\;HNO_3$) and the acid mine drainage ($0.001{\sim}0.1N$ HNO3). After 24 hours of reaction with different acidic solution, the leaching characteristics of waste rocks were classified into three types according to final pH of leaching solution. Type I refers to the case that the final pH of leaching solution was lower than that of the reaction solution due to the dissolution of acidic minerals from rocks, while type 2 and 3 refer to the case that the final pH maintained higher than that of the reaction solution. Theses types include in acid buffering minerals such as clay minerals and carbonate minerals. The leaching characteristics of the elements after the reaction could be categorized into As-Co-Fe, Cu-Mn-Cd-Zn, and Pb. As-Co-Fe started to get leached under 2.5 of pH regardless of changes in the final pH, and Cu-Mn-Cd-Zn showed different initial leaching pH according to the types of final pH changes. Based on the pH value where leaching started regardless of leaching concentration, the relative mobility of each element was in the order of Mn Zn>Cd>Cu>>Fe Co>As>Pb. Thus, more higher mobility elements(Zn, Mn and Cu) were leached by reacting with acid rain water. Acid mine drainage may result in distributions of elements having relatively less mobility(As, Fe, Co and Pb).

Characteristics of ATPases Present in Everted Membrane Vesicles of Helicobacter pylori

  • Everted membrane vesicles of Helicobacter pylori were prepared and the membrane-resided ATPases were characterized. For comparison, Escherichia coli membrane ATPases and hog gastric mucosal H,K-ATPase were employed. ATPase assay revealed that the composite enzyme pool was relatively low in specific activities, below 1/10 times than that found in E. coli. According to their inhibitory specificities, most of the ATPase pool appeared to belong to the P-type ATPase, sensitive to vanadate but not to azide. The enzyme pool was extraordinarily resistant against treatment by N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD). Certain monovalent cations, e.g., $K^+$ or $NH_4^{+}$ stimulated the whole enzyme pool only in the presence of $Mg^{2+}$. On the contrary, $Ni^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ increased enzyme activity rather effectively without the aid of $Mg^{2+}$. Under a defined condition employed, H. pylori cells could retain the membrane ATPase pool to the extent of $17{\%}$ at pH 3.2. Moreover, its activity was most stable in acidic conditions (pH 5.4-6.4). However, cytoplasmic or peripheral ATPase pools were hardly detected under acidity (below pH 4.6).

Preparation of Onion Hydrolysate for Usage of Sauce (조미액으로의 활용을 위한 양파 가수분해물 제조)

  • To develop an onion sauce, reaction conditions of celluclast 1.5L and pectinex on onion were investigated and organoleptic evaluations were carried out. Degree of hydrolysis(D.H) of hydrolysate by a mixture of celluclast 1.5L and pectinex was a higher than that by each enzyme. Hydrolysate by a mixture of celluclast 1.5L and pectinex(1:3v/v) showed 86% of D.H. and total sugar content of the hydrolysate was 54mg/ml. Hydrolysates showed 83~86% of D.H. at reaction temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ to 45$^{\circ}C$. Total sugar content of the hydrolysate was increased with increasing temperature. D.H. and total sugar content of hydrolysate was 76~86% and 51~63mg/ml, respectively, under acidic conditions. D.H. and total sugar content of hydrolysate were also increased with increasing time. Bitterness, sweetness and ordor of roasted pork prepared by adding onion and onion hydrolysate were significantly different(p<0.05), but color and preference between two groups were not significantly different(p<0.05) between two groups. There was no significant difference(p<0.05) in sweetness and bitterness of the roasted pork prepared by adding different amounts of onion hydrolysate, although ordor and preference of the roasted pork were significantly different(p<0.05).

Effects of Escherichia coli Contamination on Extended Porcine Semen Parameters

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effects of E. coli isolated from porcine semen on sperm viability, motility, and semen pH. Semen samples were prepared using commercial extender, $Seminark^{Pro}$ (Noahbio Tech, Korea) that did not contain antibiotics. And 4 different levels of E. coli were artificially innoculated to semen with following concentrations; 4,000 of sperms with 1 of E. coli (T1), 400 with 1 (T2), 40 with 1 (T3), and 4 with 1 (T4). Semen samples were preserved at $17^{\circ}C$ for 5 days in semen storage box until analyzed by flowcytometer. Aliquots were subjected to measure the sperm viability (Live/$Dead^{(R)}$ stain), motility (mitochondrial function), and semen acidity (pH) from day 0 (day of semen collection) to day 5. Sperm motility and viability were significantly decreased (p<0.05) on day 0 (4 hrs after preservation at $17^{\circ}C$) in T3 and T4 compared to control groups and were significantly decreased (p<0.05) in all groups from day 3. Sample pH was acidic in T3 (6.90~6.86) and T4 (6.86~6.65) from day 3 to day 5 (p<0.05). On the other hand, sample pH was maintained 7.0~7.1 in control, T1, and T2 during the experimental period. Sperm motility and viability were significantly decreased from day 0 to day 5 compared to control in samples contaminated with E. coli above a value of 40:1 ($20{\times}10^6$ sperm cells/ml : $5{\times}10^5$ cfu/ml). Even on day 1 in T4 and on day 3 in T3, semen pH was acidic probably due to the acidification of dead spermatozoa. These results suggest that E. coli contamination has a concentration-dependent detrimental effect on extended porcine semen quality.

A STUDY ON THE ENAMEL EROSION CAUSED BY ORANGE JUICES (오렌지쥬스의 치아 법랑질 침식효과에 대한 연구)

  • Acidic drink has been known as a cause of tooth erosion. The purpose of this study is to verify the acid levels of orange juices in market and evaluate the erosion effects on the enamel of deciduous teeth by orange juices in relatively short period of time. With four kinds of orange juice selected from market, pH, buffering capacity and concentration of Ca and P ion were measured. And forty segments of normal enamel of deciduous incisors were divided into four groups and level of erosion was measured by surface hardness test before and after soaking at 50ml of orange juice for 10 minutes. The results of this study showed that the average pH of orange juices was 4.0 and this pH value was so acidic as to cause the tooth erosion. There were differences in small quantity for each group of teeth, however, the result was statistically so significant that orange juices can cause enamel erosion in relatively short period of time.

Study of Euglenophytes Bloom and it's Impact on Fish Growth in Bangladesh

  • A study was carried out in nine fertilized fish ponds under three treatments (T-I, T-II and T-III) at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to see the bloom of euglenophytes with the intention of observing its impact on the growth of fish in culture condition. Some water quality parameters viz., temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, PO4-P and NO3-N concentration and some biological parameters viz., phytoplankton population and growth of fish were monitored at fixed intervals. Euglenophytes showed a heavy bloom in late August in the ponds of T-II. The bloom was occurred by the genera, Euglena, Phacus and Trachelomonas of which Euglena was the most dominant genus. In relation of water quality parameters with euglenophytes bloom, it was hypothesized that euglenophytes prefers higher temperature and acidic environment with higher nutrient concentrations. Acidic environment and nutrient enrichment enhanced the bloom of euglenophytes which hampered the growth of other beneficial algal groups (chlorophytes and bacillariophytes) and fish. Due to heavy bloom, the fishes breathed with difficulty at the surface. The fishes in the heavy bloom ponds presented the weight values were lower than verified for those in the ponds where the bloom did not occur. Total production (calculated) of fish in different treatments ranged from 1355.89 to1760.63 kg ha–1 with significantly (p < 0.05) lowest in the ponds of T-II.

  • The rate constants of the derivatives of N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-benzimidoyl chloride were determined at various pH and a rate equation which can be applied over wide pH range was obtained. The reaction mechanism of hydrolysis of N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-benzimidoyl chloride which has not been studied carefully earlier in acidic and basic solution can be fullly explained by the rate equation obtained. The rate equation reveals that, beow pH 7.00, the hydrolysis of benzimidoyl chloride proceeds through $S_N2$ reaction to form a carbonium ion intermediate.Above pH 8.5, however, the hydrolysis proceeds through the $S_N2$ type reaction which depends on hydroxide ion and imidoyl chloride concentration. At pH 7.0∼8.5, two reactions occur competitively.
