The effects of the treatment of an acidic solution at pH 2 on polyacrylonitrile ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were investigated using a circular cross-flow filtration bench with a membrane module. A substantial reduction in the membrane permeability was observed after 80 hours' treatment of the acidic solution. In addition, the analyses of the sample solutions by ultraviolet/visible absorption spectroscopy and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), which were taken from the feed tank as a function of the treatment time, showed that a new organic compound was produced in the course of the treatment. From a thorough search of the mass spectral library we presumed the new compound to be 1,6-dioxacyclododecane-7,12-dione (DCD), one of the well-known additives for polyurethane. Based on further experimental results, including the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and the solid-state NMR spectra of the membranes used for the treatment of the acidic solution, we suggested that the decrease of the permeate flux resulted not from the deformation of the membranes, but from the fouling by DCD eluted from the polyurethane tubes in the filtration bench during the treatment. Those results imply that the reactivity to an acidic solution of the parts comprising the filtration bench is as important as that of the membranes themselves for effective treatments of acidic solutions, for efficient chemical cleaning by strong acids, and also in determining the pH limit of the solutions that can be treated by the membranes.
Highly open porous polymer matrices are required for high density cell seeding, efficient nutrient, and oxygen supply to the cells cultured in the three dimensional matrices. However, there are severe problems of mass transfer limitations within the cell/scaffolds culture system. Thus we hypothesize that continuos-flow culture conditioning of cells with the scaffolds may improve the cell viability and the differentiated function. In this study, we fabricated porous PLGA scaffolds by using gas-foaming/salt-leaching method as previous described. Viscous PLGA gel paste contains ammonium bicarbonate particulates, acting as a gas-foaming agent as well as a salt-leaching porogen, were cast into Teflon mold and dried. Ammonium bicarbonate salt upon contact to an acidic aqueous solution evloves gaseous ammonia and carbon dioxide by itself. And we conjugated galactose moiety [AGA; $N-(aminobuty1)-O-{\beta}-D-galactopyranosyl-(1{\rightarrow}4)-D-glucoamide]$ to the terminal end group of a PLGA to increase the cell adhesion and matain the differentiated function of hepatocytes. Cell-seeded scaffolds were secured in a flow bioreactor chamber and exposed to continuous flow at 5 ml/min. As a result of our study, the high yield of hepatocytes attachment was accomplished by increasing the concentration of PLGA-AGA conjugate in polymer scaffolds and cells in the scaffolds under continuos flow condition maintained a high level of viability and albumin secretion rate of cultured hepatocytes showed a higher level that of control groups.
A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method was developed for the simultaneous determination of valproic acid (VPA) and its toxic metabolites, 4-ene-VPA and 2,4-diene-VPA in rat plasma. Extraction was performed in weak acidic condition (pH 5.2) to avoid degradation of 4-ene-VPA and 2,4-diene-VPA. The recoveries for 4-ene-VPA and 2,4-diene-VPA were more than 70% and that for VPA was 33-42%. R value for each compounds exceeded 0.998 in calibration curve during all the analysis. Accuracy and precision ranged from 88.3 to 113.2% and from 2.16 to 14.2%, respectively The method was successfully applied to monitor plasma concentrations of VPA, 4-ene-VPA and 2,4-diene-VPA after intravenous administration of VPA at the dose of 100 mg/kg, suggesting that these toxic metabolites may involved in the hepatotoxicity induced by VPA.
A continuous-automated method for the determination of nitrite ion using gas-sensing membrane electrode was developed. The pH electrode of tubular PVC membrane type was used as a detector of this system. The slope of linear response of the electrode measured at optimum conditions for the continuous-automated determination of nitrite ion was 63.5 mV/decade. The concentration range of linear response and detection limit were 2.5 ${\times}10^{-4}{\sim}\;7.5{\times}10^{-2}$M and $8.0{\times}10^{-5}$M, respectively. This detection system was not only less interfering to acidic gas species than other methods but also less time consumable for determination.

We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Giggenbach bottle method and develop the related pretreatment and analytical methods using artificial fumarolic gases. The artificial fumarolic gases were generated by mixing $CO_2$, CO, $H_2S$, $SO_2$, $H_2$, and $CH_4$ gas streams with a $N_2$ stream sparged through an acidic medium containing HCl and HF, with their compositions varied by adjusting the gas flow rates. The resultant fumarolic gases were collected into an evacuated bottle partially filled with a NaOH absorption solution. While non-condensible gases such as CO, $H_2S$, and $CH_4$ accumulated in the headspace of the bottle, acidic components including $CO_2$, $SO_2$, HCl, and HF that were dissolved into the alkaline solution. Like other acidic components, $H_2S$ also dissolved into the solution, but it reacted with dissolved $Cd^{2+}$ to precipitate as CdS when $Cd(CH_3COO)_2$ was added. The non-condensible gases were analyzed on a gas chromatography. Then, CdS precipitates were separated from the alkaline solution by filtration, and they were pretreated with $H_2O_2$ to oxidize CdS-bound sulfide into sulfate. In addition, a portion of the solution was also pretreated with $H_2O_2$ to oxidize sulfite to sulfate. Following the pretreatment, the resultant samples were analyzed for $SO_4^{2-}$, $Cl^-$ and $F^-$ on an ion chromatography. In the meanwhile, dissolved $CO_2$ was analyzed on a total organic carbon-inorganic carbon analyzer without such pretreatment. According to our experimental results, the measured concentrations of the fumarolic gases were shown to be proportional to the gas flow rates, indicating that the Giggenbach bottle method is adequate for monitoring volcanic gas. The pretreatment and analytical methods employed in this study may also enhance the accuracy and reproducibility of the Giggenbach bottle method.
Liquid or gas phase alkylation of isobutane with 1-butene for i-octane production was carried out over Cs- or $NH_4$-exchanged $H_3PW_{12}O_{40}$. Pretreatment temperature of the catalyst played an important role on the catalytic activity of heteropoly acids in the liquid phase alkylation. Cation-exchanged $H_3PW_{12}O_{40}$ showed a better total yield and i-octane selectivity than the mother acid in the liquid phase alkylation, and $(NH_4)_{2.5}H_{0.5}PW_{12}O_{40}$ was more efficient than $Cs_{2.5}H_{0.5}PW_{12}O_{40}$ in terms of i-octane selectivity. It was found that the acidic property (deactivation of acid sites) of the catalyst was closely related to the catalytic activity of Cs- or $NH_4$-exchanged $H_3PW_{12}O_{40}$ in the gas phase alkylation. $C_5-C_7$ were mainly formed in the early stage of gas phase alkylation due to the strong acidic property of the catalyst, whereas $C_8$ and $+C_9$ were mainly produced as the reaction proceeded due to the deactivation of acid sites. $Cs_{2.5}H_{0.5}PW_{12}O_{40}$ showed the highest total yield in the gas phase alkylation among the catalysts examined.
Fossil fired power plant produces the electric energy by using a thermal energy by the combustion of fossil fuels as like oil, gas and coal. The exhausted flue gas by the combustion of oil etc. contains usually many contaminated species, and especially sulfur-content has been controlled strictly and then FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) facility should be installed in every fossil fired power plant. To minimize the content of contaminations in final exhaust gas, high corrosive environment including sulfuric acid (it was formed during the process which $SO_2$ gas combined with $Mg(OH)_2$ solution) can be formed in cooling zone of FGD facility and severe corrosion damage is reported in this zone. These conditions are formed when duct materials are immersed in fluid that flows on the duct floors or when exhausted gas is condensed into thin layered medium and contacts with materials of the duct walls and roofs. These environments make troublesome corrosion and air pollution problems that are occurred from the leakage of those ducts. The frequent shut down and repairing works of the FGD systems also demand costs and low efficiencies of those facilities. In general, high corrosion resistant materials have been used to solve this problem. However, corrosion problems have severely occurred in a cooling zone even though high corrosion resistant materials were used. In this work, a new technology has been proposed to solve the corrosion problem in the cooling zone of FGD facility. This electrochemical protection system contains cathodic protection method and protection by coating film, and remote monitoring-control system.

The slow degradation rate of sewage sludge in anaerobic digesters is due to the rate limiting step of sludge hydrolysis. Therefore, the pre-treatment process had been carried out using acidic(pH 1.5, 3, 4, 5) and alkaline(pH9, 10, 13), thermal(50, 100, 150, $200^{\circ}C$) and ultrasonic treatment(400W, 20kHz, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60min). In the best conditions of each treatment, the SCOD ratio(%) of treated/untreared samples were increased 102% in acid(pH5), 986% in alkali(pH13), 959% in thermal($200^{\circ}C$) and 1123% in ultrasonic(35min) treatment. As the result, the ultrasonic treatment was most effective, followed by alkali, thermal, acidic treatment. In the effects of total gas productivity, the thermal($200^{\circ}C$) pretreatment was the highest, followed by thermal($150^{\circ}C$), ultrasonic(90min), alkaline(pH9) and ultrasonic(50min).

Water content of $PM_{2.5}$ (particles in the atmosphere with a diameter of less than or equal to a nominal $2.5{\mu}m$) was estimated by using a gas/aerosol equilibrium model, SCAPE2, for the particles collected at Seoul and Gosan, Korea. From measured and analyzed characteristics of the particles, the largest difference between Seoul and Gosan is the proportions of total ammonia (t-$NH_3$=gas phase $NH_3$+particle phase ${NH_4}^+$), total nitric acid (t-$HNO_3$=gas phase $HNO_3$+particle phase ${NO_3}^-$) and sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$). Even though both sites have sufficient t-$NH_3$ to neutralize acidic species such as $H_2SO_4$, t-$HNO_3$, and t-HCl (total chloric acid=gas phase HCl+particle phase $Cl^-$), equivalent fraction of t-$NH_3$ and t-$HNO_3$ are higher at Seoul and $H_2SO_4$ is higher at Gosan. Based on the modeling result, it is identified that the $PM_{2.5}$ at Seoul is more hygroscopic than Gosan if the meteorological conditions are the same. To reduce water content of $PM_{2.5}$, and thus, mass concentration, control measures for ammonia and nitrate reduction are needed for Seoul, and inter-governmental cooperation is required for Gosan.
Cu(In, Ga)$Se_2$ (CIGS) precursor films were electrodeposited on Mo/glass substrates in acidic solutions containing $Cu^{2+}$, $In^{3+}$, $Ga^{3+}$, and $Se^{4+}$ ions at -0.6 V (SCE) and pH. 1.8. In order to induce recrystallization, the electrodeposited $Cu_{1.00}In_{0.81}Ga_{0.09}Se_{2.08}$ (25.0 at.% Cu + 20.2 at.% In + 2.2 at.% Ga + 52.0 at.% Se) precursor films were annealed under a high Se gas atmosphere for 15, 30, 45, and 60 min, respectively, at $500^{\circ}C$. The Se amount in the film increased from 52 at.% to 62 at.%, whereas the In amount in the film decreased from 20.8 at.% to 9.1 at.% as the annealing time increased from 0 (asdeposited state) to 60 min. These results were attributed to the Se introduced from the furnace atmosphere and reacted with the In present in the precursor films, resulting in the formation of the volatile $In_2Se$. CIGS precursor grains with a cauliflower shape grew as larger grains with the $CuSe_2$ and/or $Cu_{2-x}Se$ faceted phases as the annealing times increased. These faceted phases resulted in rough surface morphologies of the CIGS films. Furthermore, the CIGS layers were not dense because the empty spaces between the grains were not removed via annealing. Uniform thicknesses of the $MoSe_2$ layers occurred at the 45 and 60 min annealing time. This implies that there was a stable reaction between the Mo back electrode and the Se diffused through the CIGS film. The results obtained in the present research were sufficiently different from comparable studies where the recrystallization annealing was performed under an atmosphere of Ar gas only or a low Se gas pressure.
