PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of acid etching treatment on surface characteristics and biological response of glass-infiltrated zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A hundred zirconia specimens were divided into four groups depending on surface treatments: untreated zirconia (group Z); acid-etched zirconia (group ZE); glass-infiltrated zirconia (group ZG); and glass-infiltrated and acid-etched zirconia (group ZGE). Surface roughness, surface topography, surface morphology, and Vickers hardness of specimens were evaluated. For biological response test, MC3T3-E1 cell attachment and proliferation on surface of the specimens were examined. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS. Group ZGE showed the highest surface roughness ($Ra=1.54{\mu}m$) compared with other groups (P < .05). Meanwhile, the hardness of group Z was significantly higher than those of other groups (P < .05). Cell attachment and cell proliferation were significantly higher in group ZGE (P < .05). CONCLUSION. We concluded that effective surface roughness on zirconia could be made by acid etching treatment after glass infiltration. This surface showed significantly enhanced osteoblast cell response.
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effects of etching with a Nd : YAG Laser on dentin, or porcelain surface on the bond strength with composite resin. The dentin specimens were devided into the following 4 groups. D1 : No treatment D2 : Etched with 10% phosphoric acid D3 : Laser etchded with 1W, 20PPs D4 : Laser etched with 2W, 20PPS The procelain specimens were devided into the following 4 groups. P1 : diamond roughened P2 : etched with HF acid P3 : Laser etched with 2W, 20PPS P4 : Laser etched with 3W, 20PPS All specimens were veneered with resin. One half of the specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for one day and the other half were thermocycled 1000 times at temperature of $5^{\circ}C\;to\;55^{\circ}C$ at 20 seconds intervals. After that, the bonding strength of composite resin to the dentin and porcelain was measured. The surface treated state and fractured state were observed with SEM. The following results were obtained. 1. In the dentin specimens, the bond strength of group D2 was highter than that of groups D1 and D3 in the case of the specimens stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for one day, there was a statistically significant difference between group D2 and D1, D3 (P<0.05). The bonding strength of the specimens that were thermocycled decreased in the following order : group D2,D4,D3 and then D1. 2. In the porcelain specimens, the bonding strength of groups P1,P2 were higher than that of group P3 in the case of the specimens stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for one day (P<0.05). The bonding strength of the specimens of being thermocycled decreased in the following order : group P2,P1,P4 and then P3. 3. The groups of high bond strength had a rougher surface and a high level of microporosity with SEM findings.

For the purpose of establishing the most appropriate method of bonding between glass ionomer liners and composite resin and comparing the materials for sandwich technique, an experiment was performed to measure the shear bond strengths between the two with the variables in the surface treatment of liners and elapsed time till composite buildup. Materials used were Vitrebond and Fuji II LC, each as the restorative and liner respectively, and each group was subdivided by surface treatment (acid etching and sandblasting) and time elapsed from GIC filling to composite buildup (immediately, 1 day, 7 days), consisting 12 groups as a whole. Each subgroup was composed of 10 specimens and the shear bond strength between GIC liners and composite resin was measured under UTM and analyzed. The result were as follows: 1. The shear bond strength between two materials was highest when initially filled Fuji II LC was sandblasted after 1 days and composite built-up (Group FS1). And the lowest value was found when GIC was acid-etched after 7 days and composite built-up (Group FE7). Significant difference was found between the two groups. (P<0.01) 2. In regard of surface treatment of GI liners, acid-etched group (VE) showed higher bond strength than sandblasted group (VS) for Vitrebond. But, the reverse was true for Fuji II LC. (P<0.05) 3. In regard to the time elapsed from GI filling to composite buildup, the group of 1 day elapse showed relatively higher strength for Vitrebond. On the contrary, immediate buildup group (FE0) was stronger for acid-etched group and 1 day elapse group(FS1) was higher for sand-blasted group in Fuji II LC. (P<0.05)

In this paper, single fiber pull-out test is used to measure the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite with temperature. Fiber and matrix of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite are respectively $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy and epoxy resin. To strengthen the interfacial bonding shear stress, various surface treatments are used. They are the hand-sanded surface treatment, the acid etched surface treatment and the silane coupled surface treatment etc.. The interfacial bonding shear strength of surface treated shape memory alloy fiber is greater than that of surface untreated shape memory alloy fiber by from 10% to 16%. It is assured that the hand-sanded surface treatment and the acid etched surface treatment are the best way to strengthen the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory composite. The best treatment condition of surface is 10% HNO$_3$ solution in the etching method to strengthen the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants of different surfaces, namely, machined (untreated), etched (acid-etched), RBM (treated with resorbable blasting media) and hybrid (RBM + machined), with respect to the following criteria: physical appearance of the surface, measurement of surface roughness, and insertion pattern. Methods: Self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants (Osstem implant, Seoul, Korea) with the abovementioned surfaces were obtained. Surface roughness was measured by using a scanning electron microscope and surface-roughness-testing machine, and torque patterns and vertical loadings were measured during continuous insertion of mini-implants into artificial bone (polyurethane foam) by using a torque tester of the driving-motor type (speed, 12 rpm). Results: The mini-implants with the RBM, hybrid, and acid-etched surfaces had slightly increased maximum insertion torque at the final stage ($p$ < 0.05). Implants with the RBM surface had the highest vertical load for insertion ($p$ < 0.05). Testing for surface roughness revealed that the implants with the RBM and hybrid surfaces had higher Ra values than the others ($p$ < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the implants with the RBM surface had the roughest surface. Conclusions: Surface-treated, self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants may be clinically acceptable, if controlled appropriately.
The etching processes of glass in aqueous hydrofluoric acid (HF) solutions were used to improve the current density of solar cell. In this study, the textured glass substrate has been etched by solution and the $TiO_2$ thin films have been prepared on this textured glass. After the $TiO_2$ film deposition the surface has been etched by HF under different concentration and the etched $TiO_2$ thin films had a longer electron lifetime and higher haze ratio as well as light scattering, resulting in 1.7 times increment of dye-sensitized solar-cell(DSSC) efficiency. Increases in the surface root-mean-square roughness of glass substrates from 80 nm to 1774 nm enhanced haze ratio in above 300 nm wavelength. In particular, haze ratio of etched $TiO_2$ films on textured glass showed gradually increasing tendency at 550 nm wavelength by increasing of HF concentration up to 10M, suggesting a formation of crater with various sizes on its surface.
The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of tetracycline-HCl on the change of implant surface microstructure according to application time. Implant with pure titanium machined surface, HA-coated surface and dual acid etched surface were utilized. Implant surface was rubbed with $50mg/m{\ell}$ tetracycline-HCL solution for ${\frac{1}{2}}$min., 1min., $1{\frac{1}{2}}$min., 2min., and $2{\frac{1}{2}}$min. respectively in the test group. Then, specimens were processed for scanning electron microscopic observation. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Both test and control group showed a few shallow grooves and ridges in pure titanium machined surface implants. There were not significant differences between two groups. 2. In HA-coated surfaces, round particles were deposited irregularly. The roughness of surfaces conditioned with tetracycline-HCL was lessened and the cracks were increased relative to the application time. 3. The etched surfaces showed the honey comb structures. The surface conditioning with tetracycline-HCI didn't influence on its micro-morphology. In conclusion, the detoxification with $50mg/m{\ell}$ tetracycline-HCI must be applied respectively with different time according to various implant surfaces.
The bond strengths of composite resin to tooth dentin vary with the methods of cavity preparation and surface treatment. Recent developments in techniques of dentinal surface treatment have renewed interest in microabrasive as a means of tooth preparation, The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a new method of cavity preparation on the bond of composite resin to dentin. Freshly extracted 144 healthy human third molars were used in this study. The dentin surfaces prepared with #600 SiC abrasive paper were divided into control and air abrasion groups according to the method of dentin surface preparation using different combinations of delivery pressure, time, and acid etching. The shear bond strengths were measured after the composite resin (Clearfil Photo Bright) was bonded to prepared dentin surfaces by light-curing using a dentin bonding system (All-bond 2), In addition, the average surface roughness was measured to investigate the effect of differently prepared dentin surfaces on the shear bond strengths. The surface changes of prepared dentin and the debonded dentin surfaces were observed with SEM (S-2300, Hitachi Co., Japan). The following results from this-study were obtained ; 1. There was no significant difference of shear bond strengths according to the changes of delivery pressure and time. 2. The shear bond strengths were lower than the control in the air abraded-only groups, but those of the additional acid-etched groups were higher than the control. 3. The shear bond strengths to all air-abraded surfaces were increased by acid etching. 4. The correlation between shear bond strengths and surface roughness was not certain, although the mean surface roughness of all air-abraded surfaces has increased evidently while it has slightly decreased for additional acid etching. 5. On SEM examination, the dentinal tubules were almost occluded in the air abraded-only groups, but those were opened in the additional acid-etched groups. 6. The debonded surfaces were showed adhesive failure mode in the air abraded- only groups, while those were showed mainly the mixed and cohesive failure mode in the additional acid-etched groups. These results suggest that the layer produced during cavity preparation or surface treatment with air abrasion must be removed for maximum bond strength of composite resin to dentin.
The aim of present study in vitro was to evaluate and compare the effects of different washing times of enamels etched with low phosphoric acid solution which makes unsoluble salts and etched but contaminated with saliva on shear bond strength of an orthodontic adhesive to enamel, and to observe the washing effect on the etched enamel surface by scanning electron microscope. All brackets were bonded with Mono-$Lok2^{TM)}$) on the labial surface of extracted human bicuspids after etching with $20w/w\%\;and\;37w/w$ and phosphoric acid solution for 60seconds and then washing for 0,5,10 and 20seconds respectedly. After etching with $37w/w\%$ phosphoric acid solution and contaminating with saliva for 30seconds and then washing for 0,5,20 and 30seconds and re-etching for 10seconds. After 24hours passed in the $37^{\circ}C$ water bath, the shear bond strengths were measured on Universal Test Machine. The data were evaluated and tested by ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test, and those results were as follows. 1. There was no significant differences between (p>0.05) shear bond strength of bonded brackets with 5, 10, 20seconds washing etched enamel using $37{\%}w/w{\%}$ phosphoric acid solution. 2. The shear bond strength of bonded brackets with $20w/w\%$ phosphoric acid and then washing for 5seconds showed bonded strength durable to occlusal force but its coefficiency score was high and etched surface was not cleaned completely and therefore it was assumed that its clinical application is not applicable. 3. There was no significant differences between (p>0.05) shear bond strengths of bonded brckets with washing for 5seconds etched enamel using $37w/w\%$ phosphoric acid solution and 10,20 seconds washing etched enamel using $20w/w\%$ phosphoric acid solution. 4. The shear bond strength of washing for 5seconds etched enamel which was contaminated with saliva showed sufficient bonded strength durable to occlusal force but its coefficiency score was high and therefore its clinical application was not applicable. 5. After etching, the sample contaminated with saliva showed the sufficient shear bond strength even washing 20seconds without re-etching.
