Recovery of lactic acid from fermentation broth using chemical precipitation was investigated with various chemicals. Effects of chemical types, mixing speeds, settling duration, and solvent addition were evaluated to improve the recovery rates of lactic acid. Overall, recovery efficiencies increased as the dosage of chemicals increased. Recovery rate of lactic acid by CaO was higher than those of $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$. Recovery of lactic acid increased by 48% under the optimized reaction conditions which included a mixing speed at 180 rpm, a settling duration of 24 h, and addition of ethanol at 25%(v/v). Practical application needs to consider types and concentrations of other organic acids as well as lactic acid. Based upon the results of fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), characteristics of recovered lactic acid were same as that in the fermentation broth.
Objectives: Antivenom serums have been used extensively for over a century and are the only effective treatment option for snake bites and other dangerous animal envenomations. In therapeutic serum centers, a wide range of antivenoms is made from animal serum, mainly equine and sheep, that are immunized with single or multiple venoms. This work aimed to use caprylic acid (CA) to purify therapeutic snake antivenom. Methods: Plasma was obtained from equine immunized with a mixture of venoms. Immunized plasma was obtained by precipitation of different concentrations (2-5%) of CA. This methodology was compared to that based on ammonium sulfate (AS) precipitation. Sediment plasma proteins were purified by ion-exchange chromatography. Protein assay, SDSPAGE, and agar gel diffusion were performed. Results: The total protein precipitation with AS was higher than precipitation with CA, but the best results were obtained when CA was added to the plasma until a final CA concentration of 5% was reached. Chromatography and electrophoresis indicated a stronger band for the 5% CA, and the gel diffusion assay showed antigen-antibody interaction in the purified serum. Conclusion: The use of CA compared to the routine method for purifying hyperimmune serums is a practical and cost-effective method for preparing and producing therapeutic serums. It constitutes a potentially valuable technology for alleviating the critical shortage of antivenom in Iran.

Climate change is more rapid in the Arctic than elsewhere in the world, and increased precipitation and warming are expected cause changes in biogeochemical processes due to altered microbial communities and activities. It is crucial to investigate microbial responses to climate change to understand changes in carbon and nitrogen dynamics. We investigated the effects of increased temperature and precipitation on microbial biomass and community structure in dry tundra using two depths of soil samples (organic and mineral layers) under four treatments (control, warming, increased precipitation, and warming with increased precipitation) during the growing season (June-September) in Cambridge Bay, Canada (69°N, 105°W). A phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis method was applied to detect active microorganisms and distinguish major functional groups (e.g., fungi and bacteria) with different roles in organic matter decomposition. The soil layers featured different biomass and community structure; ratios of fungal/bacterial and gram-positive/-negative bacteria were higher in the mineral layer, possibly connected to low substrate quality. Increased temperature and precipitation had no effect in either layer, possibly due to the relatively short treatment period (seven years) or the ecosystem type. Mostly, sampling times did not affect PLFAs in the organic layer, but June mineral soil samples showed higher contents of total PLFAs and PLFA biomarkers for bacteria and fungi than those in other months. Despite the lack of response found in this investigation, long-term monitoring of these communities should be maintained because of the slow response times of vegetation and other parameters in high-Arctic ecosystems.

"Rapid Determination of Boric Acid in Nickel Plating Solution" by the addition of Na$_2$C$_2$O$_4$ and thus preventing the precipitation of i(OH)$_2$ during titiration , has previously been reported. In this paper, the exact amount of glycerine and the complexing possibility of oxalate with nickel has been determined by measn of conductivity titrations. This experimental work has been supported by the mathematical application of the Debye-Huckel and mass action equitions as well as statistical analysis. The results were ; (1) Fro determining boric acid in nickel plating solution, 20 ml of 400ml/ι glycerine was sufficient, since 97% of the H$_3$BO$_3$ was dissoicated by this addition. (2) In the absence of Na$_2$C$_2$O$_4$ the continious precipitation of Ni(OH)$_2$ during titration with NaOH even past end -point for boric acid determination resulted in considerable anlaytical error. (3) In the presence of Na$_2$C$_2$O$_4$ during titration , Ni++ combined with C$_2$O$_4$-to form NiC$_2$O$_4$. The solution with this precititate of very fine, colloidal , trantsparent particles, remained quite clear for approximately 2 hours. Therefore it was shown that the presence of Na$_2$C$_2$O$_4$ prevents the formation of gross Ni(OH)$_2$ precititation by forming NiC$_2$O$_4$ instead of a complex salt with Ni++ , which did not interfere with the visible determination of the end point for boric acid with NaOH titation. This observous may be interpreted in the light of the previously published solubility ratio for NiC$_2$O$_4$ and Ni(OH)$_2$, 0.3mg/100g H$_2$O(25$^{\circ}C$), respectively. Precipitation of the less soluble , albeit transparent salt, NiC$_2$O$_4$ precluded therefore the precipitation of the Ni(OH)$_2$ salt.

Pectins present in the primary cell walls and middle lamellae of plant cell walls are extracted by water, cheating agents, acid or alkali solutions. However, some neutral contaminating components are extracted in conjunction with pectins during the extraction process. Thus, the accurate characterization of physi-cochemical properties of pectins necessitates to get rid of the impurities. In this review, dialysis, alcohol precipitation, ion exchange chromatography and metal precipitation were compared as procedures to purify the pectin extracts. In addition, the chemical methods to analyze pectins are discussed in terms of three major chemical constituents, i.e., anhydrogalacturonic acid, methoxyl groups and neutral sugars.
To investigate the separation of La(III) from sulfuric acid solutions containing Fe(III), rare earth double salt precipitation experiments were performed by adding sodium sulfate. In this work, the effect of sodium sulfate, Fe(III), and La(III) concentrations; reaction temperature; and time was investigated. The extent of precipitation of La(III) was proportional to the concentrations of Na+ and SO42- in the solution. As the reaction temperature increased to 100 ℃, the extent of precipitation of La(III) increased. The extent of precipitation of Fe(III) decreased with increasing reaction time. The concentration ratio of Fe(III) to La(III) did not have a significant effect on the precipitation of La(III). Our results indicate that it is possible to separate La(III) from a ferric sulfate solution through selective precipitation by adding sodium sulfate.
As one of the hydrometallurgical processes available in the recycling of silver-bearing wastes, the preparation of Ag nano-powder was investigated by a reductive precipitation reaction in silver solution using sodium formaldehydesulfoxylate and ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. Silver solution was prepared by dissolving silver nitrate with distilled water, and Tamol NN8906, PVP, SDS and caprylic acid were also used respectively as the dispersant to avoid the agglomeration of particles during the reductive reaction. Ag particles obtained from the reduction reaction from silver solution were characterized using the particle size analyzer and TEM to determine the particle size distribution and morphology. It was found that about $40\%$ excess of sodium formaldehydesulfoxylate was required to reduce completely silver ions in the solution. It alto appeared that the particle size generated with sodium formaldehydesulfoxylate was much greater than that with ascorbic acid. As far as the effect of dispersant on the Ag particles was concerned, the particle size distribution showed typically bimodal distribution in case of Tamol/FVP while very broad distribution ranged from 0.01 to $100{\mu}m$ appeared in case of SDS/caprylic acid.
The analyzed results of observed precipitation and its pH in Kwangiu for 262 days from fan. 1, 1991 to Dec. 31, 1995 are as follows. The annual mean pH was 5.7, and the monthly mean pH values of January-May and November were less than 5.6 in Kwangiu. The ratio of acid rain for these periods was about 48.1%, almost half that of the total observed days. In March, the pH was 5.4 and the ratio of acid precipitation was 69%, an especially serious situation. In the spring, the pH value was 5.5, thus weakly acidic. The pH of precipitation tended to decrease with greater precipitation. The relation between persistent time and pH of precipitation is variable, but if the persistent time is long, the pH is constant and low. It is fortunate that there is an increasing trend of pH in interannual variation, but it is thought important that the amplitude of variation of pH in 1995 was high and the pH value was 4.1 in October and November. Because heavy and persistent precipitation effects the accumulation of acidity, more concern about acid rain is needed.
This study was carried out to investigate yearly changes in the precipitation component and the source strength to acid precipitation in the rural area of Chinbuk province by analysis of the chemical components in the precipitation at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station RDA in the suburbs of Iksan from 1991 to 1995. The average ratio of acid precipitation was 47.9% from 1991 to 1995. pH of the rain water in precipitation below 5mm was higher than that above 5mm and the concentration of the ions in the rain water was the highest in the first fraction$(0{\sim}5mm)$ of precipitation. The amount and ratio of the precipitation below pH 4.0 from 1991 to 1995 were 64mm and 1.4%, respectively. The order of the major ions concentration in the precipitation was $SO_4\;^{2-}$ > $NO_3\;^-$ > $Cl^-$ > $NH_4\;^+$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $K^+$${\lrcorner}\;Mg^{2+}$. The relative contributions to the acidification of the rain in Iksan were 52% from $SO_4\;^{2-}$, 25% from $NO_3\;^-$ and 23% from $Cl^-$.
The functional properties of sesame protein concentrate(SPC) using different size of ultrafiltration(UF) membranes were examined and compared with those of conventional acid-precipitated sesame protein concentrate. The protein contents of SPC by UF with molecular size of 10K, 30K and look dalton membranes were 84.2%, 82.7%, and 76.4%, respectively, and that of acid-precipitated SPC was 88.7%. The nitrogen solubility of SPC by UF was higher than that of conventional SPC at various pH levels. Especially, it showed three-fold increase at near isoelectric point. However, water absorption capacity and fat absorption capacity of SPC by UF were decreased. For emulsion and foam properties, there were no significant differences between SPC by acid precipitation and SPC by UF method. At various pH levels, SPC by membrane with pore size of 30K dalton showed the highest emulsion properties. The SPC by UF had slightly higher viscosity than defatted sesame flour and SPC by acid precipitation.
