  • The study is about variations in Carbonyl compounds concentration within apartment buildings according to pre-residence and residence. We consecutively investigated indoor air pollutants in 120 households in 6 cities at pre-residence and residence. Carbonyl compounds were collected using the 2,4-DNPH cartridge and were analyzed using HPLC. The carbonyls concentration of indoor air in the new apartments before occupation measured formadlehyde($76.0\;{\mu}g/m^3$), acetone($85.9\;{\mu}g/m^3$), acetaldehyde($13.8\;{\mu}g/m^3$). The carbonyls concentration of indoor air in the new apartments after occupation measured formadlehyde($233.1\;{\mu}g/m^3$), acetone($128.9\;{\mu}g/m^3$), acetaldehyde($29.8\;{\mu}g/m^3$), respectively. As a result, the mean concentration of carbonyl compounds within the pre-occupancy stage was lower than those of residence.

  • Recently, many hangover cure products containing natural ingredients have been made available in the market that are effective for alcohol-related liver damage or for improved liver function. However, the cure for of liver damage or medication for improved liver function are different from hangover cure. Therefore, the efficacy hangover cure products needs to be verified. In this study, we investigated and compared the ameliorating effect of four commercially available hangover cure products on acute ethanol-induced hangover in Sprague - Dawley rats. The four samples were labeled as C, M, R, and S. The efficacy of the samples was evaluated based on the serum concentration and area under the curve (AUC) of blood ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations to quantitatively assess the hangover cure effect. Ethanol administration to the rats significantly raised the serum alcohol and acetaldehyde levels. The Cmax reduction rates of ethanol for the samples C, M, R, and S were 5.9%, 3.1%, 8.4%, and 11.7%, and the AUC were 8.9%, 2.2%, 12.1%, and 19.6%, respectively, whereas the Cmax reduction rates of acetaldehyde were 14.2%, 15.2%, 28.2%, and 35.0%, and the AUC were 21.6%, 7.5%, 22.4%, and 29.9%, respectively. In conclusion, all samples showed a tendency to relieve hangover in the order of S, R, C, and M in terms of the ethanol concentration, but only sample S showed a statistically significant decrease in both Cmax and AUC for ethanol and acetaldehyde. These results suggest that an objective method for verifying the efficacy of hangover cure products is lacking.

  • To investigate the cellular growth traits of a photosynthetic green algae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, several tests upon a culture temperature, a culture time, the influence of nutrient and the intensity of illumination were executed. Using growth chamber, some optimal conditions for the culture of algae were as follows: The culture temperature was about $28^{\circ}C$, the culture time about 4 days, and the cellular growth of algae was in proportioned to the concentration of nutrient such as nutrient broth. And the more the intensity of illumination was increased, the more the algal cell showed good growth. And then, the activity of enzyme degrading acetaldehyde was also studied using HPLC from the same strain. This enzyme was dependent on $\beta$-$NAD^+$. And showed its optimal pH around on 9.0, and also its optimal temperature around at $40^{\circ}C$. The operational conditions of HPLC were as follows: Column, ODS-Hypersil ; mobile phase, 50% (v/v) acetonitrile.

  • This research was conducted on characteristic of offensive odors in Shihwa industrial complex. Result of blocks distribution of TVOC indicates that mechanic block, site D, was the highest concentration (74 ppb). Chemistry block, site A, was the second highest concentration (50 ppb). Also, mixed blocks, metal blocks and park etc. were measured almost similar concentration about 30 ppb, but mixed block, site F, was the place where concentrations were the smallest. Average of TVOC was shown about 35 ppb concentration. Aldehydes including acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde and hydrogen sulfide concentrations were prevalent among offensive odors in Shihwa industrial complex. Comparing the offensive odor intensity mostly about acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde and hydrogen sulfide which contain high offensive odor intensity showed results that sites A, B (chemistry block) and site D, I (mechanic block) site H (metal block) have showed the intensity over 1. In the case of acetaldehyde, relatively the high odor intensities over '2' were able to obtain in many cases. The correlation coefficient (r) for hydrogen sulfide was 0.91, so that high positive correlation exists between offensive odor intensity and the hydrogen sulfide element. Butyraldehyde also showed high positive correlation coefficient, as 0.82. Correlation coefficient of acetaldehyde that had the highest value as offensive odor substance was 0.62, had somewhat correlation with offensive odor intensity.

  • The experiment was designed to investigate the sustained release dosage form of silymarin (SL) from chitosan (CS) carrier. Solid dispersed system was prepared by mixing the drug with chitosan. This solid dispersed system was cross-linked by glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and butylaldehyde, respectively. The dissolution rates of these preparations were compared with each other in vitro. The silymarin was mired with anionic alginate gel and bead was prepared by dropping this mixture to cationic chitosan solution including calcium chloride. Chitosan encapsulated alginate bead after drying in the oven was investigated for the dissolution rate. The dissolution rate of SL-CS mixture was delayed with increase in the amounts of CS and the concentration of aldehyde. The effect on the delay of dissolution rate was in the increasing order of formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, acetaldehyde, butylaldehyde. The dissolution rate of chitosan encapsulated alginate bead was parallel with the concentration of chitosan in diluted hydrochloric acid solution and delayed with increase in the concentration of chitosan in phosphate buffer solution.

  • This study is understanding characteristics and analyzing contributions of the odor causing compounds of complex-odor & major specified odor materials, and contribution analysis, caused pre-treatment facilities(input and storage) and post-treatment facilities(heating and drying). The target of this study is feeds-production-facilities, located in Seoul. The averaged complex-odor compounds on the boundary line is 21 times higher, and it is 15 times higher than emission standards. In cracking&collection(pre-treatment facilities), the concentration of compounds is 4,881 times, 2,080 times in drying, and 1,442 times in putting&storing facilities. Ammonia occupies the largest portion of the results of monitoring specified odor compounds in input&storage facilities, followed Acetaldehyde > Hydrogen sulfide > Methyl mercaptan. In cracking&collection, Ammonia also occupies most of odor compounds, followed Methyl mercaptan > Acetaldehyde > Dimethyl disulfide > Dimethyl sulfide > Hydrogen sulfide. Acetaldehyde > Methyl mercaptan in drying facilities. On the boundary line, however, the concentration of specified odor compounds stays below emission standards. The result of contribution analysis is that methyl mercaptan has the highest contribution in input & storage, as well as cracking&collection facilities, followed Acetaldehyde > Hydrogen sulfide > Dimethyl sulfide > Dimethyl disulfide. In the drying facilities, the contribution shows Methyl mercaptan > Acetaldehyde > i-Valeraldehyde and Butyraldehyde. Therefore, to decrease odor in foodwaste treatment facilities, proper prevention facilities need to be installed and operated, according to characteristics of individual odor compounds, based on monitored data.

  • Possibility of Lactobacillus strains able to metabolize ethanol and acetaldehyde in vitro and in vitro was studied. Lactobacillus brevis strains showed higher alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities than those of other lactic acid bacteria strains. L. brevis HY7401 exhibited the highest ADH and ALDH activities and decreased considerable amounts of ethanol and acetaldehyde in vitro. L. brevis HY7401 cell intake significantly decreased serum ethanol levels in rats fed ethanol (4g/kg BW) compared to control groups. Ethanol level in small intestines of rats fed L. brevis HY7401 was about 50%, and their acetic acid concentration was twofold higher than control. Results reveal L. brevis HY7401, isolated from human, metabolizes ethanol and acetaldehyde in vitro and in vivo.

  • Objective: This study was carried out for the purpose of identifying major substances contributing to the production of odor and evaluating the characteristic of odors. Methods: Complex odor and 17 odorous compounds were measured at 18 waste transfer stations located in Seoul. Results: The dilution ratio value of complex odor ranged from 4 to 30 times in the boundary layer of 18 waste transfer stations. At 6 measurement points among the 18 waste transfer stations, the dilution ratio values exceeded standards (15 times). When the results were evaluated in terms of their contribution to the formation of malodor, the patterns indicated that the highest concentration values in the residential waste disposal process were of i-valeraldehyde and acetaldehyde, while butyraldehyde and acetaldehyde accounted for a large proportion of odorous compounds from the waste recycling process. Conclusions: It was found that butyraldehyde and acetaldehyde were the primary compounds released from the food waste disposal process. Overall, aldehyde compounds were the greatest contributor to detectable odor intensity emitted at the waste transfer stations.

  • Many residents living near the cement factories are facing unpleasant odors. Thus, various efforts have been attempted to reduce the emission of odorous compounds from the cement manufacturing processes. This study focused on analysis of Acetaldehyde and their dispersion in vicinity of the residential area using theoretical calculation such as numerical simulation and dispersion model. The most significant odor species was acetaldehyde indicating 2 ppb at the test point, and the estimated concentration was similar to the value by Calpuff calculation. The modelling work revealed the emission source of the factory to influence the test site.

  • The term "hangover" refers to symptoms such as headache, heartburn, nausea, and dizziness caused by acetaldehyde created through alcohol decomposition in the body after alcohol intake. Many scientists have conducted research on diverse drugs, foods, and medicinal herbs aimed at eliminating hangovers. However, research on metabolism to objectively verify or measure their effects on hangover symptoms has been lacking. Accordingly, in this study, deep sea water minerals were administered orally at varying concentrations to rats that consumed alcohol, and changes in the levels of amino acids in their bodies were measured using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to gauge the minerals' effects on hangover symptoms. Thus far, biochemical research on hangover cures has been confined to basic research measuring changes in the levels of alcohol dehydrogenase and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase as well as in the concentrations of ethanol, acetaldehyde, and acetate using spectroscopes such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits or gas chromatography-mass spectrometers. In comparison, this study presents pharmacokinetic research that simultaneously tracked biomaterials including amino acids and organic acids, metabolites associated with hangover, to clarify hangover mechanisms more specifically. In addition, this study examined hangover mechanisms without an external supply of tracked materials not overlapping with alcohol metabolism-related materials, such as external amino acids and sugars.
