North Korea's Overseas Transfer Dance - Focusing on Japan and China - (북한춤의 해외전파 : 일본과 중국을 중심으로)

  • This study overseas compatriots in the North during the propagation and development of dance patterns and was going to be based, people living outside of the dance culture as a group of overseas Koreans, especially dance culture of Koreans in Japan, China are interested in and thought about the necessity of the study.   • Each ethnic group has a different cultural background and has developed its own culture in the name of a tradition. The interaction between different cultures is ever increasing through the process of acculturation or culture contact The purpose of this study is to provide baseline information about domestic living of Korean immigrants in Australia and Australians for a larger cross-cultural study project. As the first step, the usage of domestic space and seating styles of 52 Korean households in Melbourne were analyzed. Ethnographic research was conducted, utilizing a questionnaire. The findings of this research are as follows: 1. The most popular type of Living-Dining-Kitchen arrangement was the one which the kitchen is separated from the living and dining area. The level of satisfaction was the highest when the living room, dining room, and kitchen were all separated. 2. A laundry room was indispensable for Koreans in Australia, and they wanted to dry laundry and do ironing in there. Most people were satisfied with the toilet separated from the bathroom A drain hole on the floor of the bathroom was not indispensable for most Korean-Australians. 3. Korean-Australians tend to engage in various activities in their individual rooms, and they estimated that the size of most rooms were small. They also wanted to renovate the house to expand the rooms. 4. The seating style of Korean-Australians was mostly chair-seating. Yet, they often made beds on the floor for guests, and made kimchi sitting on the floor. Also, when they were relaxing, they were using both chair-seating and floor-seating. 5. Korean-Australians were not very satisfied with the use of floor carpets because of the dust collected on the carpets, and the difficulty to clean. It may be related to their preferred floor seating style, as well. 6. Almost all Korean-Australians take off their shoes inside of the house for hygienic reasons. They had a shoes cabinet at the entrance inside of the house. 7. The most popular heating system was ducted heating. The level of satisfaction about this was moderate because hot air contains lots of dust and it makes rooms very dry. Many were using electric blankets and their desired heating system was Ondol (heated floor). 8. Korean-Australians thought that the living room was the most important place for the family, and believed it should be decorated well to entertain guests. They also pointed out that the lighting was not bright enough in general.

  • Each ethnic group has different cultural backgrounds and each culture has developed with its own traditions. The interaction between different cultures is getting more active through acculturation and cultural contacts. The purpose of this study was to compare domestic living of Korean immigrants with Australians in the form of a Cross-Cultural study. A laundry room was indispensable for both and they all wanted to do ironing in there as well as dry. Both were satisfied with the type which toilet was separated from the bathroom Drain hole on the floor of the bathroom was not indispensable for most Koreans and Australians. 3. Koreans and Australians were doing various activities in living area and both were getting together around kitchen(dining) area. The particular thing of Koreans was that they were using the main bedroom with multiple purpose. 4. The seating style of Koreans and Australians belong to chair-seating style generally. But Koreans were using floor seating style in making bed for the guest and making Kimchi. Koreans and Australians were using mixed style of floor seating and chair-seating in relaxing time with watching TV, treating guest or so. 5. Koreans were not satisfied with using carpet cause of dust but Australians were satisfied with the carpet cause of warmness. 6. Most Koreans and Australians were take off shoes inside of the house. Koreans were organize shoes around the front door of the house usually and Australians were organize shoes in bedroom usually. 7. The most popular heating system was ducted heating for both. The level of satisfaction about ducted heating was low for Koreans because they though that it could contaminate air. Australians were satisfied with ducted heating because they though that this one was fit on the weather of this area. 8. Living room was the most important one for Koreans and Australians and they also thought it should be decorated well for entertaining guests. Most Koreans were estimate that the brightness of the light of the house was not enough but it was estimated to moderate for Australians on the contrary.

Most of Australians were satisfied with separated toilet and bathroom. h drain hole on the floor of the bathroom was not essential for most Australians. 3. Australians were doing various activities in the living areas and they also enjoy gelling together in the kitchen and dining areas. 4. The seating style of Australians was generally the chair-seating style. However, they sometimes made a bed for guests on the floor and watched TV and treated guests with both chair seating style and floor seating style. 5. Australians were satisfied with using carpet presumably for its warmth.6. Many Australians took off their shoes inside of the house for hygienic reason. Most people organized the shoes in the cabinet of the bedroom. 7. The most popular heating system was ducted heating for Australians and they were very satisfied with it because it was suitable for the weather in Melbourne. 8. The living room was the most important one for Australian families and they thought that it should be decorated well for entertaining guests. It was also considered that brightness of the light was enough for most Australians.

  • From the mid-1980s '91s, remarkable Ethnicism and Primitivism in the Europe fashion trend could be represented as an exotic taste longing for secenery and emotion of non-europe area in the West. These phenomenon could be found out in connection with Acculturation, which means when two different cultures or more were contacted they were identified or merged in process of diffusion and change of them. This point of view was the culture anthropologic one that make a comparison and analysis of sameness and difference between cultures. The purpose of this study was to illuminate exotic taste represented in costume in the cluture-anthroplogic aspect, to compare with beauty of costume that each culture of costume and the meaning of the times due to those differences. an aspect of the exotic taste and character in the western costume that was inspected by dividing into 'Primitivism', 'Oriental element' and 'the element of a national costume in the East European bloc ' were as follows; First, Primitivism had something in common with what was pursued in the trend of Modern Art, through the late 19th century to the early 20th century. In fashion fettered by technique, the creation expressed in a free was and showed simple beauty of costume. At the same time, pure emotion expression, creative power and witty strong expression give the cognition of transcendency breaking the routine and the cognition of complexity of an included conception. Those are garments showing not only the primitive thought and mysticism but a fancy, an abstraction, and a life. Colors and accessaries which described nature and matched simple costume composition to the expression of various material or patterns transmitted the image of the primitive strongly. Student, Dietitian Reactions to Multicultural Food Service in Hannam School District (다문화 음식 급식에 대한 하남지역 중학생의 인식, 만족도, 메뉴 기호도 및 영양사의 태도연구)

  • Student and dietitian reactions to a multicultural food service menu were studied. Food habits in a multicultural family could delay the acculturation of the children to traditional Korean food and could cause the isolation of children from the community. Also, Korean students need to be exposed to other cultures and foods because it can be a challenge to eat novel foods when students grow up. To help both multicultural and Korean children adjust to new foods, a multicultural menu was included in a school's food service. Students regarded the multicultural menu as access to another culture, but they felt that improvement of the food quality and menu diversity were required. The degree of satisfaction with the food quality, appearance, freshness, temperature, and menu diversity were all moderate. The multicultural menu was served as a single menu item or a combination menu item. The main dish single items - pasta, jajangmyeon, onigiri, hamburgers, rice and curry, kaupatmu, kaupatkung, and donburi - were liked, but nasi goreng was liked only moderately. The soup - based dish single item, tempura soba, was liked, while tomyum was disliked. The side dish single items - tangsuyook, Japanese donkatsu, baked sausage and potatoes, tandoori chicken, chicken britto, Vienna schnitzels, tender tortillas, and fried chicken wings - were liked. The desserts single items-sandwiches, pineapples, waffles, pizza, bread with strawberry jam, mangoes, and tacoyaki - were liked. The combination menus - Italian, Indian, and American - were liked, but the southeast Asian menu was the least favored. Acceptance of combination and single menu items were similar. Male students liked multicultural menu items more than female students in all categories. Approximately 60% of dietitians had experience serving the single menu items for multicultural food service. The appropriate serving times were twice per month. Dietitians guessed that 80% of the students liked the multicultural menu. The dietitians preferred serving American or Chinese foods to southeast Asian food. There were two difficulties in serving the multicultural menu, which were voiced as as lack of skill in cooking the items and improper cooking utensils and tableware for the items. Despite all the difficulties, the dietitians served the multicultural menu because it provided menu diversity, rather than for educational reasons.

Foreign Workers' Acculturative Stress in Korea Society (한국사회에서 이주노동자의 문화적응 스트레스)

  • This study was conducted to identify acculturative stress in foreign workers in Korea. The data of 123 subjects were collected from January to May, 2010, and analyzed using the SPSS WIN 18.0 program to compare demographic characteristics and acculturative stress. The results: The highest score among 7 subcategories of acculturative stress was homesickness, followed by discrimination. Subjects who had high school diploma were more likely to have acculturative stress than those who were middle school graduates or lower. Those who did not have the community with their homeland people experienced acculurative stress more than those who had. The 7 subcategories showed that those who had homesickness, the sense of being discriminated, culture shock, the homeland community, and the experience of unfair treatment in public had acculturative stress more than their counterparts. Those who did not live with their spouses had homesickness more than the counterpart. Male subjects, those with high school diploma, and those who did not live with their spouses appeared to have guilty feelings more often than their counterparts. The results of this study suggested further studies on foreign workers so that they could adjust themselves well to the Korean society.

The Effect of Foreign Crew's Cultural Homogeneity on the Self-efficacy and Organizational Commitment (혼승선박 내 외국인선원의 문화적 동질성이 자기효능감과 조직커미트먼트에 미치는 영향)

  • The primary purpose of this study is to examine empirically the effect of foreign crew's cultural and organizational characteristics on their self-efficacy and organization commitment. Currently, the restrictions on the employment of the foreign crews are being eased in the Korean shipping industry and many problems are occurring consequently. However, specific and empirical studies on the relevancy of cultural characteristics to the crew's self-efficacy and organizational commitment on board the vessels with combined crews have not yet been carried out. To solve these problems, we examined how the cultural characteristics such as acculturation and accommodation of different culture related to the improvement of cultural homogeneity of vessels with combined crews influence on the self-efficacy, job satisfaction and organizational commitment of the foreign crews through SEM analysis. According to the results, hypothesis 1 and 2 were all supported with statistical significance. To conclude, this study suggests that foreign crew's cultural homogeneity and their self-efficacy should be firstly enhanced in order to improve organizational commitment on the vessel with combined crews. Furthermore, a study on self-efficacy of crew organization is urgently needed to enhance the effectiveness of an organization in a vessel with combined crews that has special environment. The result of this study will contribute a lot to the organization management of a vessel with combined crews.

  • This research was done to determine and analyze a qualitative on the essential structure of the experiences of stroke patients with combined treatment of oriental and western medicine. Methods: Participants in this study were targeting 25 stroke patients who live mostly in D city and received the combined treatment of oriental and western medicine, but received oriental medicine treatments based on their own wills. Data were collected and recorded through in-depth interviews. Data analysis was conducted by Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Results: As a result, their acculturation were classified into 21 clusters of theme and 6 categories. Selected 6 categories as follows. 'being severely shocked from sudden attack', 'being depressed with rehabilitation', 'western therapy was more effective in emergency situations', 'having limitations in western therapy', 'selecting oriental therapy for themselves', 'discovering the meaning of rehabilitation in oriental therapy'. Conclusion: Based on these necessary data for systematic oriental rehabilitation development.

  • This study aimed at developing a family life education program to assist North Korean defector adolescents in their acculturation and adjustment process into South Korea. The program focused on building positive social relationships and managing healthy living, to allow them to develop appropriate skills needed to achieve social self-sufficiency. Researchers conducted interviews with defector adolescents as well as teachers of charter schools for defector students in order to identify the adolescents' needs. The contents of the program were carefully chosen to reflect the needs identified through the interviews. The program provides hands-on projects that are relevant to students' lives and consists of 10 study units that deal with different aspects of family life: food and dietary life, appearance and clothing, housing and community life, family and personal relationships, consumption, etc. The program was implemented in September through December, 2015, at Yeomyung School, which is an alternative highschool for North Korean defector adolescents. The program is expected to help North Korean defector students adopt the skills by experience and apply them in their daily life situations.
