This study deals with the accident models of arterial link sections by vehicle type. The objectives are to analyze the characteristics of accidents, and to develop the models by type. In pursuing the above, this study uses the data of 414 accidents occurred on 24 major arterial links in 2007. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the number of accidents is analyzed to account for about 47% in passenger car, 15% in SUV and 10% in trucks. Second, 3 Poisson regression models which are all statistically significant are developed using passenger car, SUV and truck as dependant variables. Finally, AADT and the number of traffic islands as common variables, and the number of pedestrian crossings, lanes, connecting roads, intersections(4-Leg), rate of medians and the number of bus stops as specific variables of the models are selected.
An intensive study was conducted for the crash worthy structural design of the recently developed Korean High Speed Train (KHST). Two main design concepts were set up to protect both crews and passengers from serious injury in heavy collision accidents, and to reduce damage to the train itself in light collision accidents. A collision against a movable 15-ton rigid obstacle at 110 kph was selected from train accident investigations as the accident scenario for the heavy collisions. A train-to-train collision at the relative velocity of 16 kph was used for the light collision. The crashworthiness behaviors of KHST were numerically evaluated using FEM. Analysis results using 1-D collision dynamics model of the full rake consist and 3-D shell element model of the front end structure showed good crashworthy responses in a viewpoint of structural design. Occupant analyses and sled tests demonstrated that KHST performed well enough to protect occupants under the considered accident scenarios. Finally our numerical approaches were evaluated by a real scale collision test.
This paper presents the general system theory and its applications to the safety analysis method that is a recent trend over the traditional event-driven model. This new model is known as STAMP(Systems Theory Accident Modeling and Process)proposed by Nancy G. Leveson in MIT. The new model has benefits of systemic approaches concerning the system safety as a whole including the context it is in, its stimulants and outcomes, and its parts as well as the relationships among them in a holistic manner. The method consists of a hierarchical control structure, a process model, and the safety constraints governing the control. This paper demonstrates an example the contrasts the differences between the approaches of STAMP and the traditional safety models.

In terms of an accident management, the cases causing severe core damage need to be analyzed and arranged systematically for an easy access to the results since the Three Mile Island (TMI) accident. The objectives of this paper are to explain how to identify the plant response and cope with its vulnerabilities using the probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) quantified results and severe accident database SARDB(Severe Accident Risk Data Bank) based on sequences analysis results. Although PSA has been performed for the Korean Standard Power Plants (KSNPs), and that it considered the necessary sequences for an assessment of the containment integrity. The developed Database (DB) system includes a graphical display for a plant and equipment status, previous research results by a knowledge-based technique, and the expected plant behaviour. The plant model used in this paper is oriented to the cases of loss of coolant accident (LOCA) is be used as a training simulator for a severe accident management.

This study tries to develop model in order to assess personal factors of senior traffic accidents that are widely recognized as one of the social problems. For the current practice. it gathers data (Simulation & Questionnaire Survey) of KOTSA and conducts Poisson and Negative Binomial Regression Analysis to develop traffic accident severity model. The results show that elderly drivers' accidents are mainly affected by attentiveness selection, velocity prediction ability and attentiveness distribution ability in a positive(+) way. Second, non-senior drivers' accidents are also positively(+) influenced by attentiveness selection, velocity prediction, distance perception, attentiveness distribution ability and attentiveness diversion ability. Therefore, influencing factors of senior and non-senior drivers to vehicle accidents are different. This eventually poses a indication that preliminary education for car accident prevention should be implemented based up[n the distinction between senior drivers and non-senior drivers.

The unmanned aerial vehicle industry has developed a lot, but the possibility of accidents is increasing due to potential risks. In this study, SHELL models and HFACS were used to analyze unmanned aerial vehicle accidents in the UK and to identify the main causes and characteristics of accidents. The main cause analyzed by the SHELL model was identified as an abnormality in the alarm system. The main cause of the accident analyzed by HFACS was identified as the technical environment. The common cause identified by the SHELL model and HFACS was identified as a mechanical problem of unmanned aerial vehicles. This is due to the lack of accurate information or functionality of the alarm system in the operator interface, which often prevents the operator from responding to sensitive information. Therefore, in order to prevent civil UAV accidents, the stability and reliability of the system must be secured through regular inspections of the UAV system and continuous software updates. In addition, an ergonomic approach considering human interfaces is needed when developing technologies.

In contrast to all-time flooded small modular reactor (SMR) systems, an in-kind flooding safety system (FSS) has been proposed as a passive safety system applicable to small modular reactors (SMRs) that adopt a metal containment vessel (MCV). Under transient conditions, the FSS can provide emergency cooling to dry reactor cavities and sustain long-term coolability using re-acquired evaporated steam in the reactor building on demand. When designing an FSS, the effect of the flooding flow area is vital as it affects the overall accident sequence and safety. Therefore, in this study, a MELCOR model of a reference SMR is developed and numerical analysis is performed under postulated accident scenarios. Without flooding, the MCV pressure of the reactor module exceeds the design pressure before core damage. To prevent core damage, an emergency flooding strategy is devised using various flow path parameters and requirements to ensure an adequate emergency coolant supply before the core damage is investigated. The results indicate that a flow area exceeding 0.02 m2 is required in the FSS to prevent MCV overpressure and core damage. This study is the first to report a strategic analysis for appropriately sizing an FSS flooding valve applicable to innovative SMRs.
The Korean nuclear industry developed the SPACE (Safety and Performance Analysis Code for nuclear power plants) code and this code adpots two-phase flows, two-fluid, three-field models which are comprised of gas, continuous liquid and droplet fields and has a capability to simulate three-dimensional model. According to the revised law by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) in Korea, the multiple failure accidents that must be considered for accident management plan of nuclear power plant was determined based on the lessons learned from the Fukushima accident. Generally, to improve the reliability of the calculation results of a safety analysis code, verification work for separate and integral effect experiments is required. In this reason, the goal of this work is to verify calculation capability of SPACE code for multiple failure accident. For this purpose, it was selected the experiment which was conducted to simulate a Multiple Steam Generator Tube Rupture(MSGTR) accident with Passive Auxiliary Feedwater System(PAFS) operation by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and focused that the comparison between the experiment results and code calculation results to verify the performance of the SPACE code. The MSGR accident has a unique feature of the penetration of the barrier between the Reactor Coolant System (RCS) and the secondary system resulting from multiple failure of steam generator U-tubes. The PAFS is one of the advanced safety features with passive cooling system to replace a conventional active auxiliary feedwater system. This system is passively capable of condensing steam generated in steam generator and feeding the condensed water to the steam generator by gravity. As the results of overall system transient response using SPACE code showed similar trends with the experimental results such as the system pressure, mass flow rate, and collapsed water level in component. In conclusion, it could be concluded that the SPACE code has sufficient capability to simulate a MSGTR accident.

Pedestrian traffic needs to be accurately quantified to predict effectively pedestrian traffic accidents, however, pedestrian traffic is more difficult to measure than vehicle traffic. In this study, we suggest the time-and cost-effective application of mobile closed-circuit television (CCTV) using a smartphone as an alternative that can collect and analyze real-time data with little. In the present investigation, the pedestrian-vehicle conflict that can develop into an accident was defined as the pedestrian accident exposure. After installing mobile CCTV in 40 sections of Dongseong-ro, Daegu, the pedestrian accident exposure was estimated through negative binomial regression analysis using the collected data. The results of the analysis showed statistically significant changes in the pedestrian accident exposure variables. Based on the present results, a pedestrian accident exposure estimation model was developed which can be used in sections where pedestrian accidents may occur.
