One of the goals in the field of mobile robotics is the development of personal service robots for the elderly which behave in populated environments. In this paper, we describe a security robot system and ongoing research results that minimize the risk of the elderly and the infirm to access an area to enter restricted areas with high potential for falls, such as stairs, steps, and wet floors. The proposed robot system surveys a potential falling area with an equipped laser scanner sensor. When it detects walking in elderly or infirm patients who in restricted areas, the robot calculates the velocity vector, plans its own path to forestall the patient in order to prevent them from heading to the restricted area and starts to move along the estimated trajectory. The walking human is assumed to be a point-object and projected onto a scanning plane to form a geometrical constraint equation that provides position data of the human based on the kinematics of the mobile robot. While moving, the robot continues these processes in order to adapt to the changing situation. After arriving at an opposite position to the human's walking direction, the robot advises them to change course. The simulation and experimental results of estimating and tracking of the human in the wrong direction with the mobile robot are presented.
The multiple block localization method in a wide area for multiple robots using iGS is proposed in this paper. The iGS is developed for the indoor global localization using ultrasonic and RF sensors. To measure the distance between a mobile robot and a beacon, the tag on the mobile robot wakes up one beacon to send out the ultrasonic signal and measures the traveling time from the beacon to the mobile robot. As the number of robots is increased, the sampling time of localization also becomes longer. Note that only one robot can localize its own position calling beacons one by one during each of the sampling interval. This is a severe constraint for the localization of multiple robots in a wide area. This paper proposes an efficient localization algorithm for the multiple robots in a wide area which can be divided into multiple blocks. For a given block, a master beacon is designated to synchronize robots. By the access of the synchronization signal, each beacon in the selected group sends out an ultrasonic signal. When the robots in the block receive the ultrasonic signal, they can calculate their own locations based on the distances to the beacons, which are obtained by the multiplication of flight time and velocity of the ultrasonic signal. The efficiency of the algorithm is verified through the real experiments.
Tele-operation and remote monitoring techniques are essential and important technologies for the inspection and maintenance of the radioactive waste. A mobile robot has been developed for the application of remote monitoring and inspection of nuclear facilities, where human access is limited because of the high-level radioactive environments, The mobile robot was designed with reconfigurable crawler type of wheels attached on the front and rear side in order to pass through the ditch, The extendable mast, mounted on the mobile robot, car be extended up to 8 m vertically. The robust controller for radiation is designed in focus on electric components to prevent abnormal operation in a highly radioactivated area during reactor operation, This robot system will enhance the reliability of nuclear power facilities, and cope with the unexpected radiation accident.
Robot related injuries in industrial accidents statistics during 2008~2010 have accounted for a total of 109 cases equivalent to 30~40 cases for each of those years. The number of injured compared to the dissemination of industrial robots(51,302 units/2004) can be regarded as quite low. However, the fatal injuries sustained by 7 (6.4%) out of 109 cases paints the stark reality of robot-related accident fatalities. It is a sad probability that as the automation process expands its use of industrial robots which have increased significantly in demand, the incidence of workplace accidents will also increase. Therefore, the incidence of accidents throughout the period of 2008~2010 has been analysed to prevent the injuries due to the increased use of industrial robots. In the analysis, the injuries occurred during the industrial robot operation accounted for 45.9% of the entire accidents. Thus, we examined the present status of the industrial robot operation to analyze the root cause of accidents occurred in our studied time period. We looked at a total of 469 workplaces. 456 workplaces responded in the year 2009 and survey studies were implemented at 13 of the 29 workplaces where work injuries were sustained in the year 2010. Even where protective measures and interlock devices were in place, our studies indicated that workers could access the robot area to perform the tasks in 188 sites(40.1%). Also, the 143 sites(30.5%) had control measures and equipment located in the safety fence. In addition, the robots found at 164 sites(35.0%) could be restarted without additional restarting operation. These three causes accounted for most of the workplace injuries during the industrial robot operations. Futhermore, we confirmed the fact that the protective measures of the current safety regulations were not strictly enforced. Based upon our studies and the investigation of the present status of the industrial robot operation, higher standards in training and supervision of workers in the robot operation must quickly be met in order to prevent these industrial injuries.
In this paper, we presents the remote inspection activity with a mobile robot at the calandria face areas of the PHWR (pressurized heavy water reactor) nuclear power plants during full power plant operation.. The tele-operated mobile robot has been developed for this task. A 4 wheeled mechanism with the dual reconfigurable crawler arm has been adopted for the ease access to the high radiation area of calandria face. A specially designed extendable long reach mast attached on the mobile platform and the thermal image monitoring system enable human eyes to look into the calandria face. Application of robot will keep human workers from high radiation exposure and enhance the reliability of nuclear power plants.
The APR1400 reactor stud holes can be stuck due to high temperatures, high pressure, prolonged engagement, and load changes according to pressure changes in the reactor. Threaded surfaces of a stud hole should be cleaned for the sealing of pressure in reactor vessel by removing any foreign materials which may exist in the stud holes. Human workers can access to the stud hole for the cleaning of stud holes manually, but the radiation exposure of human workers is increased. Robot is an effective way to work in hazardous area. So we introduced robot for the cleaning of stud holes. Localization of mobile robots is generally based on odometry, but with increased mileage, position errors can be accumulated. In order to eliminate cumulative error and to ensure stability of its driving, laser sensors and new control algorithm were utilized. The distance between the robot and the wall was measured by laser sensors, and the control algorithm was implemented so as to travel the desired trajectory by using the measured values from sensors. The performance of driving and hole sensing were verified through field application, and mobile robot was confirmed to be applicable to the APR 1400 NPP.
The fourth industrial revolution is expected to show technological innovation that develops among different fields beyond boundaries through the convergence and integration of fields. With the development and convergence of digital technology, users can receive information anywhere in the world. In this paper, we propose an adaptive interaction concept in a various environment by using a mobile robot based on projection augmented reality (AR). Most previous studies have aimed fixed projector or projection for a pre-designed environment. Thus, they provide only limited information. To overcome the abovementioned problem, we provide the adaptive information by implementing a projection AR system that can be mounted on the mobile robot. For that, the mobile robot based on the projection system was defined as Pervasive AR. Pervasive AR is configured with a pervasive display, a pervasive interface, and seamless interaction. The Pervasive AR technology enables the user to access information immediately by expanding the display area into real space, which implies an environment of intuitive and convenient interaction by expanding the user interface. This system can be applied to various areas, such as a home environment and a public space.
In this paper, we propose the design method of distributed control system using Controller Area Network (CAN). CAN is an advanced serial communication protocol for distributed real-time control systems. It is a contention-based multi-master network whose timeliness properties come from its collision resolution algorithm which gives a high schedulable utilization and guaranteed bus access latency. With proposed method using CAN, we apply to robot controller. The effectiveness of proposed method is demonstrated by the simulation and experiment.
In this paper, we propose a remote controller for robot manipulator using local area network(LAN) and internet. To do this, we develope a server-client system as used in the network field. The client system is in any computer in remote place for the user to log-in the server and manage the remote factory. the server system is a computer which controls the manipulator and waits for a access from client. The server system consists of several control algorithms which is needed to drive the manipulator and networking system to transfer images that shows states of the work place, and to receive a Tmp data to run the manipulator. The client system consists of 3D(dimension) graphic user interface for teaching and off-line task like simulation, external hardware interface which makes it easier for the user to teach. Using this server-client system, the user who is on remote place can edit the work schedule of manipulator, then run the machine after it is transferred and monitor the results of the task.
This paper presents a robotic agent design and application in the ubiquitous intelligent space. We set up an experimental environment with Bluetooth host, Bluetooth client, furniture and home appliance, and robotic agents. First, the agents basically performed patrol guard to detect unexpected penetration, and to keep home safely from gas-leakage, electric leakage, and so on. They were out to patrol fur a robbery while navigating in a living room and a private room. In this task, we used an area-based action making and a hexagon-based Q-learning to control the agents. Second, the agents communicate with Bluetooth host device to access and control a home appliance. The Bluetooth host offers a manual control to person by inquiring a client robot when one would like to check some place especially. In this exercise, we organize asynchronous connection less (ACL) between the host and the client robots and control the robot maneuver by Bluetooth host controller interface (HCI).
