Common methods for large scale hydrogen production, such as steam reforming and coal gasification, also involve production of carbonaceous gases. It is therefore necessary to handle process gas streams involving various mixtures of hydrocarbons, $H_2$, $H_2O$, CO and $CO_2$ at moderate to high temperatures. These gases pose a variety of corrosion threats to the alloys used in plant construction. Carbon is a particularly aggressive corrodent, leading to carburisation and, at high carbon activities, to metal dusting. The behaviour of commercial heat resisting alloys 602CA and 800, together with that of 304 stainless steel, was studied during thermal cycling in $CO/CO_2$ at $650-750^{\circ}C$, and also in $CO/H_2/H_2O$ at $680^{\circ}C$. Thermal cycling caused repeated scale separation, which accelerated chromium depletion from the alloy subsurface regions. The $CO/H_2/H_2O$ gas, with $a_C=2.9$ and $p(O_2)=5\times10^{-23}$ atm, caused relatively rapid metal dusting, accompanied by some internal carburisation. In contrast, the $CO/CO_2$ gas, with $a_C=7$ and $p(O_2)=10^{-23}-10^{-24}$ atm caused internal precipitation in all three alloys, but no dusting. Inward diffusion of oxygen led to in situ oxidation of internal carbides. The very different reaction morphologies produced by the two gas mixtures are discussed in terms of competing gas-alloy reaction steps.
This research is results of experimental and numerical works on characteristic of strength increase and bearing capacity in dredged and reclaimed soil due to desiccation shrinkage. For a soil sampled from southern coastal area in Korea, basic soil property tests and standard consolidation test with falling head permeability tests were carried out to obtain consolidational characteristics of soil. Double cone penetration test, laboratory vane test and unconfined compression test were also performed to investigate the change of shear strength with degree of desiccation. Model tests were performed in 1G environment and 30G level artificially accelerated condition by using the centrifuge model test facilities to investigate the bearing capacity of desiccated ground. Test results were analyzed by using the theoretical and load-settlement characteristics method proposed by Meyehof & Hanna(1978). On the other hands, the numerical technique, using the finite strain consolidation theory considering the effect of desiccation was used to estimate the appropriate time of using heavy construction equipments in field with respect to strength increase due to desiccation.
PU type flame-retardant coatings (TBAO/L-75, TBAOL ; TBAO/N-100, TBAON) were prepared by blending bromine-containing modified polyester (TBAO) which was synthesized in our earlier work. with two kinds of isocyanate curing agents, Desmodur L-75 and Desmodur N-100. Physical properties of the prepared flame-retardant coatings were tested. TBAOL shows better hardness than TBAON, while TBAON shows better viscosity, accelerated weathering resistance, yellowness index and lightness index difference than TBAOL. There were no remarkable differences in fineness of grind, $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss, cross-hatch adhesion, and abrasion resistance of TBAOL and TBAON. There was no discernable difference in flame-retardancy between the two flame-retardant coatings, TBAOL and TBAON. When the content of tribromo acetic acid, which is flame-retarding component, was 30wt% the LOI value was in a range of $29{\sim}30%$, which indicates that the two coatings are good flame-retardant coatings.
Chloride penetration is considered as a most crucial factor for the determination of the service life of concrete. A lot of experimental tools for the chloride penetration into concrete have been developed, however, the mechanism was based on only diffusion, although permeability is also main driving forces for the chloride penetration. Permeation reacts on submerged concrete impacting for short to long term durability while capillary suction occurs on only dried concrete for very early time. Furthermore, hydrostatic pressure increases in proportional to measured depth from the surface of water because of the increasing weight of water exerting downward force from above. It is thought, therefore, that the water pressure has a great influence on the chloride penetration and thereby on the service life of marine concrete. In this study, new experiment is designed to examine the effect of water pressure on chloride penetration in concrete quantitatively. As an experiment result, pressure leaded a quick chlorides penetration by a certain depth, while diffusion induced chlorides to penetrate inward slowly. Therefore, it was concluded that chloride should penetrates significantly by water pressure and the phenomena should be accelerated for concrete exposed to deep sea. The research is expected as a framework to define the service life of submerged concrete with water pressure and compute water permeability coefficient of cementitious materials.
The high-solid coatings were prepared by blending the synthesized acrylic resin in the previous paper, and hexamethylene diisocyanate-trimer and curing it at room temperature. The characterization of the films of the prepared coatings was performed. The $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss, impact resistance, cross-hatch adhesion, and heat resistance of the films proved to be good, and the pencil hardness, drying time, and pot-life proved to be slightly poor. From a viscoelastic measurement using a rigid-body pendulum, curing was accelerated with the Tg value.
The western coast of South Korea is famous for its large and broad tidal lands. Nevertheless, land reclamation, which has been conducted on a large scale, such as Sihwa embankment construction project has accelerated coastal environmental changes in the embankment inland. For monitoring of environmental change, vegetation change detecting of the embankment inland were carried out and field survey data compared with Landsat TM, ETM+, IKONOS, and EOC satellite remotely sensed data. In order to utilize multi-temporal remotely sensed images effectively, all data set with pixel size were analyzed by same geometric correction method. To detect the tidal land vegetation change, the spectral characteristics and spatial resolution of Landsat TM and ETM+ images were analyzed by SMA(spectral mixture analysis). We obtained the 78.96% classification accuracy and Kappa index 0.2376 using March 2000 Landsat data. The SMA(spectral mixture analysis) results were considered with comparing of vegetation seasonal change detection method.
The construction of reliability evaluation according to their fields was promoted under the supervision of Agency for Technology and Standards for establishing the relevant institution & infrastructure that can fundamentally solve the reliability problems, the biggest obstruction when the developed electric components & materials come into the market. This paper describes the criterion of reliability evaluation and the evaluation facilities for the purpose of heightening the reliability of composite insulator estimated as the new material among the electric components & materials. We will understand the criterion of reliability evaluation with two parts as the performance evaluation based on various kinds of standards (especially IEC) and as the long-term reliability evaluation utilizing the accelerated aging & flashover test methods. Therefore we aim for constructing the criterion of reliability evaluation as the foundation for evaluation so as to support the industrial group based on KERI facilities.
Concrete filled steel tubes are extensively applied in engineering structures due to their resistance to high tensile and compressive load and convenience in construction. But one major flaw, their vulnerability to environmental attack, can severely reduce the strength and life of these structures. Degradation due to corrosion of steel confining the concrete is one of the major durability problems faced by civil engineers to maintain these structures. The problem accelerates as inner surface of steel tube is in contact with concrete which serves as electrolyte. If it remains unnoticed, it further accelerates and can be catastrophic. This paper discusses a non-destructive degradation monitoring technique for early detection corrosion in steel tubes in CFST members. Due to corrosion, damage in the form of debonding and pitting occurs in steel sections. Guided ultrasonic waves have been used as a feasible and attractive solution for the detection and monitoring of corrosion damages in CFST sections. Guided waves have been utilized to monitor the effect of notch and debond defects in concrete filled steel tubes simulating pitting and delamination of steel tubes from surrounding concrete caused by corrosion. Pulse transmission has been used to monitor the healthy and simulated damaged specimens. A methodology is developed and successfully applied for the monitoring of concrete filled steel tubular sections undergoing accelerated chloride corrosion. The ultrasonic signals efficiently narrate the state of steel tube undergoing corrosion.
The accelerated development of new materials, technologies and construction processes, in parallel with advances in computational algorithms and ever growing computational power, is leading to more daring and innovative architectural and structural designs. The search for non-regular building shapes and slender structures, as alternative to the traditional architectural forms that have been prevailing in the building sector, poses important engineering challenges in the assessment of the strength and mechanical stability of non-conventional structures and systems, namely against highly variable actions as wind and seismic forces. In case of complex structures, laboratory experiments are a widely used methodology for strength assessment and loading characterization. Nevertheless, powerful numerical tools providing reliable results are also available today and able to compete with the experimental approach. In this paper the wind action on a free-form complex thin shell is investigated through 3D-CFD simulation in terms of the pressure coefficients and global forces generated. All the modelling aspects and calibrating process are described. The results obtained showed that the CFD technique is effective in the study of the wind effects on complex-shaped structures.
