In order to find the effect of improving hyperlipidemia by Acanthopanax senticosus water extract, a hypercholesterol diet and Acanthopanax senticosus water extract were supplemented to week- old male Spargue Dawley rats for four weeks in different amount. Results showed that serum total cholesterol significantly decreased in the group supplemented with Acanthopanax senticosus water extract by 50mg/kg(ASW-50) and 75mg/kg(ASW-75) compared with the control group.(p<0.05). Serum triglyceride also showed a significant decrease in the group supplemented with 50mg/kg(ASW-50) and 75mg/kg(ASW-75) compared with the control group. Liver total cholesterol showed a significant decrease in the group supplemented with Acanthopanax senticosus water extract by 50mg/kg(ASW-50) and 75mg/kg(ASW-75) compared with the control group(p<0.05), but liver triglyceride did not show a significant decrease in all of the experiment groups. Total cholesterol and triglyceride in feces significantly increased in all of the groups supplemented with Acanthopanax senticosus water extract(p<0.05). Acanthopanax senticosus water extract decreased the level of serum total cholesterol and triglyceride, reduced total cholesterol in the liver, and increased the excretion of total cholesterol and triglyceride in the feces.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the total phenolic content of Korean Acanthopanax senticosus stems harvested in different seasons and provide basic data for developing functional reinforcement products based on the optimal harvesting time. Methods: Each sample harvested in different seasons was extracted and concentrated twice for 2 hours using 70% ethyl alcohol. Phenolic compounds were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography for simultaneous multi-component analysis of 14 compounds, including syringaresinol and so on. Results: The results showed that the stem of Korean Acanthopanax senticosus harvested in winter (November 29th) (EAS-5) had the highest phenolic content of 1.038%. The stem of Korean Acanthopanax senticosus harvested in autumn (October 1st) (EAS-4) showed the second-highest phenolic content of 0.764%, followed by the stem of Korean Acanthopanax senticosus harvested in spring (February 2nd) (EAS-1) with a content of 0.390%. On the other hand, the stem of Korean Acanthopanax senticosus harvested in the summer (June 2nd) (EAS-3) showed the lowest content at 0.342%. In conclusion, the stem of Korean Acanthopanax senticosus harvested in winter (EAS-5) showed the highest phenolic compound content. Conclusions: Considering the extraction yield and the total phenolic content, as well as the concentrations of key functional components such as eleutheroside B, chlorogenic acid, and syringaresinol in the 70% ethyl alcohol extract of Korean Acanthopanax senticosus, it is suggested that the stems of Korean Acanthopanax senticosus harvested during the winter season are suitable for the development of novel materials with enhanced anti-obesity functionality.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Acanthopanax senticosus extracts(ASE) on alcohol administered mice. The administration of Acanthopanax senticosus extracts(60 mg/kg) had beneficial actions toward alcohol degradation in acute alcohol treated mice. In the acute alcohol degradation experiment, serum alcohol concentration were lower 3 and 6 hours after taking ethanol(5 g/kg) in ASE treated mice. The oral administration of ASE showed decreased gastric mucous membrane damage produced in ethanol treated mice. In addition, intraperitoneal(i.p.) administration of ASE showed antiinflammatory effects in inhibition tests of vascular permeability produced by acetic acid. ASE also reduced concentrations of nitric oxide(NO), tumor necrosis alpha(TNF)-${\alpha}$ and interleukin(IL)-6 in macrophages that were activated by LPS. These results demonstrate that Acanthopanax senticosus extracts possesses the potential to stimulate alcohol degradation and inhibit inflammatory effects in mice.

In the present studγ, we investigated the component analγsis, measurements of antioxidant activities and anti-microbial activities from fruit of Acanthopanax senticosus HARMS in order to detect the biological activities and develop novel functional resources. Different solvents extraction ratios were different according to different solvent extraction of Acanthopanax senticosus HARMS. Composition analysis we highly composed as 72.33%. The minerals of different organs were highly composed of potasium as 5951.3 mg/100g. The monosaccharldes are composed of the arabinose, xylose, mannose, galactose, glucose. Antioxidamt activity was measured in water extracts: $57.3\;{mu}/ml$, ethanol extracts $630.1\;{\mu}g/ml$, methanol extracts: $248.5\;{\mu}g/ml$, 71% ethanol extracts: $198.97\;{\mu}g/ml$, 75% methanol exracts: $96.77\;{\mu}g/ml$, chloroform extracts. $1194.83\;{\mu}g/ml$ at $IC_{50}$ value. The antimicrobial activities were observed in extracts from Acanthopanax senticosus HARMS against am negative bacteria and gram positive bacteria.
Acanthopanax senticosus was grown by a novel, proprietary method, of culturing isolated cells in a bioreactor. An extract from the cells was evaluated for its effect on lipid metabolism in rats fed a high fat diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=6) were fed either an AIN-76 diet (control, NDCon), control diet plus Acanthopanax senticosus extract (ND+Ex), a modified AIN-76 diet supplemented with 20% beef tallow (high fat, HFCon), or a high fat diet plus Acanthopanax senticosus extract (HF+Ex), for 5weeks. Body weight gain was significantly higher in the HFCon group than the NDCon group. Feed consumption was significantly lower, but energy intake higher, in the groups fed high fat diets compared with the groups fed control diets. Serum HDL-cholesterol concentrations were significantly increased but serum LDL-cholesterol concentrations were decreased in the groups fed the Acanthopanax senticosus extract. Abdominal fat accumulation and serum leptin levels were significantly higher in the HFCon group than the other groups. Carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I (CPT-I) mRNA levels were increased in the groups fed Acanthopanx senticosus extract. These results suggest that supplementation of cell cultured Acanthopanax senticosus extract regulates CPT-I mRNA levels in liver and has an effect on the normalization of lipids in rats fed a high fat diet.
We examined the effect of Acanthopanax senticosus extract on macrophage activity and its effect on the growth of lactic starter culture when added to fermented milk. Greater amounts of Acanthopanax senticosus extract correlated with higher macrophage activity (p<0.05), in particular at $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$. Water extract of Acanthopanax senticosus resulted in higher levels of nitric oxide (NO) than 70% ethanol extract at $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$. In contrast, 70% ethanol extract resulted in higher $interleukin-1{\alpha}\;(IL-1{\alpha})$ and Tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}\;(TNF-{\alpha})$ levels than water extract. The growth of lactic starter culture was inhibited by increasing amounts of Acanthopanax senticosus water extract, resulting in a lower decrease in pH. A stirred type or drink type fermentation process seemed more suitable than a set type for the proper production of Acanthopanax senticosus extract added to fermented milk.
This study aims to investigate the sound absorption ability of Acanthopanax senticosus wastes as an eco-friendly sound-absorbing material. The sound absorption coefficient was examined with different heights of A. senticosus wastes filling (40, 60, 80, and 100 mm) in impedance tubes. The sound absorption peaks shifted to a lower frequency as the height of A. senticosus wastes inside the tubes increased. The sound absorption ability at filling heights of 80 and 100 mm was obtained as 0.3M and 0.5M grades, respectively, based on KS F 3503. The results suggest that A. senticosus wastes exhibit good sound absorption ability and can therefore be used as an efficient, eco-friendly sound-absorbing material.
Hyperin from the leaves of Acanthopanax senticosus was tested for its effect on rat lens aldose reductase and demonstrated to exhibit a significant inhibition of rat lens aldose reductase activity with $IC_{50}$ value of $2.63\;{\mu}M$.
Chemical constituents of fruits, leaves and barks of Acanthopanax senticosus forma inermis were studied. Their fruits have higher contents of crude ash, crude protein, crude fat, fructose and glucose than those of other Acanthopanax species, and contained larger amount of glutamic acid and malic acid among amino acid and organic acid, respectively. The compounds identified from their barks and leaves, were $\beta$-sitosterol and stigmasterol, sesamin, savinin, syringaresinol diglucoside, oleanolic acid, chiisanoside and polyacetytene ($C_9H_{10}O_2$, mp. 62~63).

Acanthopanx senticosus (Araliaceae) is a long-lived woody species primarily distributed throughout East Asia. This species is regarded as medically and ecologically important woody plants in Korea. To identify the variation of the RAPD patterns between domestic and foreign A. senticosus species, 22 random primers were applied to Korean A. senticosus and A. senticosus for. inermis, Chinese and Russian A. senticosus. Six primers of them could be used to discriminate the origins and 58 polymorphisms among 92 scored DNA fragments. Six bands are specific for Korean A. senticosus and A. senticosus for. inermis. Especially, three primers, OPD04, OPD11 and OPE10, were useful to differentiate between domestic and foreign Acanthopanax species. RAPD analysis was a useful method to discriminate among A. senticosus populations or accessions and Korean accessions are distinct genetically.
