  • The purposes of this study were to show general trends in the aspects of psychological family environment (parental communication), peer factor, academic performance factor, depression perceived by adolescents and to examine possible changes in such trends in accordance with demographic variables and the family structure environment (parental marital status, family economic status, and parents' education level), and then to determine the effect of these variables on adolescents' depression. The subjects were 1009 middle and high school students in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. The main results were as follows: 1) Paternal communication was significantly lower in technical high school students, divorced/ separated parents, and families of lower economic status. Maternal communication was significantly lower in male students, divorced/sepa-rated parents, and families of lower economic status. Academic performance problems was significantly higher in males, technical high school students, divorced/ separated parents, families of lower economic status, and a less educated father. Peer relations was significantly lower in students of divorced / separated parents, and of families of lower economic status. Depression was significantly higher in technical high school students, divorced / separated parents, and families of lower economic status. 2) In the case of male students, paternal communication had both a direct and an indirect negative effect through peer relations on depression, while academic performance problems had both a direct and an indirect positive effect through peer relations on depression. Both peer relations and maternal communication had a positive and a negative direct effect on depression. School grade had both a direct and an indirect negative effect through paternal communication on depression. Parental marital status(divorced or separated) had both a direct and an indirect positive effect through academic performance problems on depression. Family economic status had only an indirect effect on discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to introduce the concept of academic medicine to the medical societies of Korea and to identify any potential obstacles in the establishment of academic medicine in Korea. The core concepts of academic medicine include medical education, research, and patient care. Academic medicine can be practiced in the unique area of healthcare involving medical schools and teaching hospitals by faculty physicians in the academic medicine field. Through academic medicine, the next generation of healthcare professionals is trained, new discoveries can be made, and patients can find new hope for a cure. The flourishing of academic medicine has resulted in substantial advancements in medicine over the past few centuries, but at the turn of the 21st century, there was concern that academic medicine was on the decline. To address this concern, the International Campaign to Revitalize Academic Medicine was established and announced five scenarios to 2025 to debate the future of academic medicine. Although the system resembles that of Western medical societies, Korean medical societies were not familiar with academic medicine, and poor conditions caused by the distorted healthcare system in Korea have actually interfered with the nurturing of academic medicine. One of the main problems may include less interest in medical education and research relative to clinical practice by medical societies and the government. Collaborative efforts from both medical societies and the government are needed to establish academic medicine successfully in Korea for a better future.

  • Three groups of maltreated Korean children (Grades 1 through 3) drawn from Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies were compared to a control group of nonmaltreated children on academic achievement as measured by standardized tests of reading, spelling, arithmetic, and writing. Findings were that maltreated children performed significantly below their nonmaltreated children on the standardized tests, in particular in arithmetic. In first grade, maltreated children did not perform below nonmaltreated children on writing and reading, but maltreated children gradually declined in academic performance in these skills. The older, grade 3, children showed more serious academic problems than the younger children (Grades 1 and 2) on four academic skills. This suggests that early experience of child abuse have a strong affect on children's academic achievement.

  • This paper focuses on proportional reasoning being emphasized in today's elementary math, and analyzes the way students use their proportional reasoning abilities and strategies according to their academic achievement levels in solving proportional problems. For this purpose, various types of proportional problems were presented to 173 sixth-grade elementary school students and they were asked to use a maximum of three types of proportional reasoning strategies to solve those problems. The experiment results showed that upper-ranking students had better ability to use, express and perceive more types of proportional reasoning than their lower-ranking counterparts. In addition, the proportional reasoning strategies preferred by students were shown to be independent of academic achievement. But there was a difference in the proportional reasoning strategy according to the types of the problems and the ratio of the numbers given in the problem. As a result of this study, we emphasize that there is necessity of the suitable proportional reasoning instruction which reflected on the difference of ability according to student's academic achievement.

  • Given social problems of service addiction such as mobile messenger services(MMSs), many studies on service management and information systems have examined the negative outcomes of service addiction. MMS addiction significantly influences user's health and academic performance. In this regard, this study investigated the effects of MMS addiction on user's health and academic performance problems. We posit personal traits and service features as key antecedents of MMS addiction. The research framework was tested by using survey data collected from 162 university students who have frequently used Kakaotalk. The analysis results found that MMS addiction significantly influences users' health and academic performance problems. The findings of this study indicate that self-esteem and self-control play an important role in generating MMS addiction. While attention significantly affects MMS addiction, social relationship formation and perceived enjoyment are not significantly associated with MMS addiction. The analysis results help MMS providers and government establish policies or guidelines to induce healthy MMS use.

  • The aim of this paper was to determine the utilization of online information resources by undergraduate students in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. It was undertaken specifically with the objectives of identifying the online information resources used; academic purposes for their use, extent, problems and strategies for improving the academic use of the resources by undergraduate students. Descriptive survey was used as the research design. The population of this study comprises of all 25,657 regular registered undergraduate students in University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The sample for this study comprises 2500 students which is 10% of the population. The results of the study shows that most of the online information resources are not used by the undergraduate students. Just a few of them are highly used. Some of the academic purposes for the use of the resources include to do course assignment and project works and to stay up-to-date on social events. The major problems responsible for the low utilisation of the resources include incessant power failure, limited available computers in the university library, and server's low bandwidth. Based on the findings, maintenance of uninterrupted power supply, provision of enough computers in the library; constant upgrade of server's bandwidth and many more were recommended as the strategies for improving the use of online information resources by undergraduate students in UNN. The implication of this study lies in the fact that solutions to the problems raised would be helpful to the university management, librarians and students in ensuring maximum and adequate provision and effective utilisation of online information a resources in the library.
