Design Issues of Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks

  • This paper investigates the design issues of spectrum sensing in the cognitive radio (CR) networks of opportunistic unlicensed spectrum access. The cognitive radios can perform a communication using the incumbent user spectrum band without the interference caused by the cognitive radio users. In this case, the cognitive radios must know the real-time radio environments of the incumbent user spectrum band using the spectrum sensing, beacon signal, and geo-location database access. Then in this paper, we are going to provide spectrum sensing issues which include the sensing techniques, the regulatory requirements, the analysis of DTV detection threshold, and main considerations associated with the spectrum sensing design in cognitive radio systems. Also, this paper introduces design trade-offs in order to optimize the sensing parameters such as sensing time and sensing complexity.

Development of Korean Standard Horizontal Design Spectrum Based on the Domestic and Overseas Intra-plate Earthquake Records (국내외 판내부 지진기록을 이용한 한국 표준수평설계스펙트럼의 개발)

  • The design spectrum for Korea, which is known to belong to an intra-plate region, is developed from the ground motion records of the earthquakes occurred in Korea and overseas intra-plate regions. The horizontal spectrum is defined as geometric mean spectrum, GMRotI50. From the statistical analysis of the geometric mean spectra, a mean plus one standard deviation spectrum in lognormal distribution is obtained. Regression analysis is performed on this curve to determine the shape of spectrum including transition periods. The developed design spectrum is valid for the estimation both spectral acceleration and displacement.

  • This paper investigates the spectrum hole utilization of cooperative schemes for the two-way relaying model in order to improve the utilization efficiency of limited spectrum holes in cognitive radio networks with imperfect spectrum sensing. We propose two specific bidirectional secondary data transmission (BSDT) schemes with two-step and three-step two-way relaying models, i.e., two-BSDT and three-BSDT schemes, where the spectrum sensing and the secondary data transmission are jointly designed. In the proposed cooperative schemes, the best two-way relay channel between two secondary users is selected from a group of secondary users serving as cognitive relays and assists the bi-directional communication between the two secondary users without a direct link. The closed-form asymptotic expressions for outage probabilities of the two schemes are derived with a primary user protection constraint over Rayleigh fading channels. Based on the derived outage probabilities, the spectrum hole utilization is calculated to evaluate the percentage of spectrum holes used by the two secondary users for their successful information exchange without channel outage. Numerical results show that the spectrum hole utilization depends on the spectrum sensing overhead and the channel gain from a primary user to secondary users. Additionally, we compare the spectrum hole utilization of the two schemes as the varying of secondary signal to noise ratio, the number of cognitive relays, and symmetric and asymmetric channels.

A Channel Allocation Scheme Based on Spectrum Hole Prediction in Cognitive Radio Wireless Networks (무선인지 통신망에서 스펙트럼 홀 예측에 의한 채널할당)

  • In wireless communication networks, most of the prediction techniques are used for predicting the amount of resource required by user's calls for improving their demanding quality of service. However, we propose a channel allocation scheme based on predicting the resources of white spectrum holes for improving the QoS of rental user's spectrum handoff calls for cognitive radio networks in this paper. This method is supported by Wiener predictor to predict the amount of white spectrum holes of license user's free spectrum resources. We classify rental user's calls into initial calls and spectrum handoff calls, and some portion of predicted spectrum-hole resources is reserved for spectrum handoff calls' priority allocation. Simulations show that the performance of the proposed scheme outperforms in spectrum handoff call's dropping rate than an existing method without spectrum hole prediction(11% average improvement in 50% reservation).

  • The cognitive radio (CR) technique is a useful tool for improving spectrum utilization by detecting and using the vacant spectrum bands in which cooperative spectrum sensing is a key element, while avoiding interfering with the primary user. In this paper, we propose a novel cluster-based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme in cognitive radio with two solutions for the purpose of improving in sensing performance. First, for the cluster header, we use the double adaptive energy thresholds and a multi-bit quantization with different quantization interval for improving the cluster performance. Second, in the common receiver, the weighed HALF-voting rule will be applied to achieve a better combination of all cluster decisions into a global decision.

  • Long-lived Small Modular Reactors are being promoted as an innovative way of catering to emerging markets and isolated regions. They can be operated continuously for decades without requiring additional fuel. A novel configuration of long-lived reactor core employs a mixed neutron spectrum, providing an improvement in nonproliferation metrics and in safety characteristics. Starting with a base sodium reactor design, moderating material is inserted in outer core assemblies to modify the fast spectrum. The assemblies are shuffled once during core lifetime to ensure that every fuel rod is exposed to the thermalized spectrum. The Mixed Spectrum Reactor is able to maintain a core lifetime over two decades while ensuring the plutonium it breeds is below the weapon-grade limit at the fuel discharge. The main drawbacks of the design are higher front-end fuel cycle costs and a 58% increase in core volume, although it is alleviated to some extent by a 48% higher power output.

  • Due to underutilization of spectrum under current inefficient and static spectrum management policy, various kinds of opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) strategies have appeared. Myopic policy is a simple and robust OSA strategy with reduced complexity that maximizes immediate throughput. In this paper, we propose mathematical models to evaluate the throughput and the MAC delay of a myopic policy under saturation tra c conditions. Using the MAC delay distribution, we evaluate the packet delay of secondary users under nonsaturation conditions. Numerical results are given to show the performance of the myopic policy in cognitive radio networks.

  • The Cognitive Radio (CR) technology is a promising solution for exploiting the limited spectrum resources and providing flexibility of spectrum usage. Future interactive broadcasting service can be realized by utilizing CR concept, since the up-link return channel can be found by the spectrum sensing method, which is core functional block of the CR system. In this paper, the spectrum sensing technologies of CR system is presented. First the system architecture of the CR with spectrum sensing block is presented. The suggested spectrum sensing technique consists of the coarse and the fine spectrum sensing. The coarse spectrum sensing technique adopted the wavelet transform to provide the multi-resolution sensing feature - Multi-Resolution Spectrum Sensing (MRSS). The fine spectrum sensing technique uses the beneficial properties of the autocorrelation function Analog Auto-Correlation (AAC). The simulation results for the proposed sensing technologies are presented for various incumbent signals.

  • Due to the development of spectrum use technology and various services based on radio spectrum, the scarcity of spectrum has been heightened. In this circumstances both the efficiency and fairness of spectrum use need to be raised. Open spectrum access can be a useful approach for both goal. For the open spectrum access the legal institution needs to be reformed to enable it. From the starting point of spectrum use till the end of spectrum use there can be various issues of rights and obligations. So the legal institution for various legal status of spectrum use and establishment and continuous management of DB and fast and respectable dispute resolution mechanism is required.

Applications of the wavelet transform in the generation and analysis of spectrum-compatible records

  • A wavelet-based procedure to generate artificial accelerograms compatible with a prescribed seismic design spectrum is described. A procedure to perform a baseline correction of the compatible accelerograms is also described. To examine how the frequency content of the modified records evolves with time, they are analyzed in the time and frequency using the wavelet transform. The changes in the strong motion duration and input energy spectrum are also investigated. An alternative way to match the design spectrum, termed the "two-band matching procedure", is proposed with the objective of preserving the non-stationary characteristics of the original record in the modified accelerogram.
