  • Layered-type dielectric waveguide filters were designed. As the order of layers increased the fabrication process for dielectric waveguide filters which the resonator parts were connected by the lateral direction has many difficulties. The proposed structure in this report was designed based on the layered-type for the some parts of resonators. The size of layered-type dielectric waveguide filters installed on the PCB surface were reduced at 25% as compared with the usual waveguide filters by using a relative dielectric constant 22.

  • We designed a multimode interference (MMI) coupler to use in vertical coupling of double layered polymeric waveguides and analyzed the coupling characteristics by comparing our experimental and simulation results. We found that our proposed new structure, a stepped MMI coupler, is effective in vertical coupling between waveguide layers with a short length of MMI and has a high tolerance for the variation in the structure of an MMI coupler that can be induced as errors in the fabrication process.

  • This paper proposes a hierarchical roadmap (HRM) and its construction process to efficiently represent navigable areas in an indoor environment. HRM is adopted to solve the path-planning problems of mobile robots in indoor environments. HRM has a multi-layered graphical structure that enables it to abstract and cover navigable areas using a smaller number of nodes and edges than a probabilistic roadmap. During the incremental process of constructing HRM, information on navigable areas is abstracted using a sonar gridmap when the mobile robot navigates an unexplored area. The HRM-based planner efficiently searches for paths to answer queries by reducing the search space size using the multi-layered graphical structure. The benefits of the proposed HRM are experimentally verified in real indoor environments.

  • In the present study, a new anchor design was proposed to minimize the initial deflection of micro multi-layer cantilever beam with step-up structure, which is a key component of thin film micro-mirror array. It is important to minimize the initial deflection, caused by residual stress, because it reduces the performance of the actuation. Theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to examine the cause of the initial bending deflection. It was found that the bending deflection at the anchor of the cantilever beam was the primary source of initial deflection. Various anchor designs were proposed and the initial deflections for each design were calculated by finite element analysis. The analysis results were compared with experiments. To reduce the initial deflection a secondary support was added to the conventional structure. The optimal shapes were obtained by simulation and experiment. It was found from the analysis that the ratio or horizontal and vertical dimensions of secondary support was the governing factor, which affected the initial deflection.

  • A time domain method is presented for soil-structure interaction analysis under seismic excitations. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating infinite elements for the far field soil region. Equivalent earthquake input forces are calculated based on the free field responses along the interface between the near and far field soil regions utilizing the fixed exterior boundary method in the frequency domain. Then, the input forces are transformed into the time domain by using inverse Fourier transform. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far field soil region formulated using the analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements in the frequency domain can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in the time domain. Hence, the response can be analytically computed in the time domain. A recursive procedure is proposed to compute the interaction forces along the interface and the responses of the soil-structure system in the time domain. Earthquake response analyses have been carried out on a multi-layered half-space and a tunnel embedded in a layered half-space with the assumption of the linearity of the near and far field soil region, and results are compared with those obtained by the conventional method in the frequency domain.

  • In this study, probabilistic analysis of seepage through a two-layered soil foundation was performed. The hydraulic conductivity of soil shows significant spatial variations in different layers because of stratification; further, it varies on a smaller scale within each individual layer. Therefore, the deterministic seepage analysis method was extended to develop a probabilistic approach that accounts for the uncertainties and spatial variation of the hydraulic conductivity in a layered soil profile. Two-dimensional random fields were generated on the basis of the Karhunen-Lo$\grave{e}$ve expansion in a manner consistent with a specified marginal distribution function and an autocorrelation function for each layer. A Monte Carlo simulation was then used to determine the statistical response based on the random fields. A series of analyses were performed to verify the application potential of the proposed method and to study the effects of uncertainty due to the spatial heterogeneity on the seepage behavior of two-layered soil foundation beneath water retaining structure. The results showed that the probabilistic framework can be used to efficiently consider the various flow patterns caused by the spatial variability of the hydraulic conductivity in seepage assessment for a layered soil foundation.

  • Hydrogen gas sensors were fabricated after the form of metal/insulator/semiconductor(MIS) structure on a p-type silicon wafer and a insulating layer (silicon dioxide) thickness was changed from $500{\AA}$ to $5000{\AA}$. Their electrical properties were investigated with the variation of the hydrogen gas concentration at room temperature. At the applied forward bias of lV to both ends of Pd-MIS sensors the current was decreased logarithmically with the increase of hydrogen concentration in air. In the case of a thin $SiO_2$ layered ($500{\AA}$) sensor the current ratio was decreased to 25 % at 1 % of hydrogen concentration in air and 50% for a thick $SiO_2$ layered ($5000{\AA}$) sensor. And the response time of the thick insulating layered sensor to 1% hydrogen containing air was about 50 seconds and regeneration time was 2.5 minutes. When a 0.5mA current was appied to the thick insulating layered sensor the maximun voltage shift was calculated to 0.8V in the case of ${\theta}$ = 1 and the Pd surface coverage of hydrogen was increased logarithmically with hydrogen partial pressure.

  • Double-diffusive convection induced by simultaneously-imposed lateral temperature and concentration gradients in a rectangular enclosure with aspect retio, 2.0 has been studied experimentally for adiabatic and isothermal horizontal boundary conditions. Visual observations show two distinct flow structures depending on the buoyancy ratio. The unicell flow structure is observed for a lower buoyancy ratio while the layered flow structure appears for a higher buoyancy ratio. There exists an unstable flow regime between two buoyancy ratios.

  • Mg/Al layered double hydroxide with two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures was synthesized by a hydrothermal technique. The morphology and aspect ratio of $Mg_4Al_2(OH)_{14}3H_2O$ were controlled by the concentration and kinds of the hydrolysis agent, and temperature. The aspect ratio of $Mg_4Al_2(OH)_{14}3H_2O$ layered double hydroxides with the 2D hexagonal crystal structure was tailored from about 12.6 to about 45.7. The intercalated $CO{_3}^{2-}$ anions of the synthesized 2D $Mg_4Al_2(OH)_{14}3H_2O$ layered double hydroxides were exchanged to $NO_3{^-}$ anions. The bulk 2D $Mg_4Al_2(OH)_{14}3H_2O$ layered double hydroxides with the increased space between two layers due to the anion exchange were exfoliated in a formamide solution. The aspect ratio of the exfoliated 2D $Mg_4Al_2(OH)_{14}3H_2O$ layered double hydroxides increased to 570.3.

  • Encapsulation of L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) within a bio-compatible layered inorganic material was achieved by coprecipitation reaction, in which the layered inorganic lattice and its intercalate of vitamin C are simultaneously formed. The nano-meter sized powders of vitamin C intercalate thus prepared was again encapsulated with silica nano-sol to form a nanoporous shell structure. This ternary nanohybrid of vitamin Clayered inorganic core-$SiO_2$ shell exhibited an enhanced storage stability and a sustained releasing of vitamin C. Furthermore, the nano-encapsulation of vitamin C with inorganic mineral was very helpful in delivering vitamin C molecules into skin through stratum corneum, facilitating transdermal penetration of vitamin C in topical application.
