  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analysis of disparity between bilateral hand movement when performing activity of daily living using accelerometer. Methods : The subjects of this study included 6 healthy adults. The assessment tool used Jebsen Hand Function Test and accelerometer. The subjects performed 7 sub-tests after wearing accelerometer around wrist. Results : Among sub-tests, writing was the only significantly correlated with difference between dominant and non-dominant hand(t=-2.394, p<.05). Further, non-dominant hand (M=2476.2, SD=802.2) showed more movement than dominant hand(M=1456.2, SD=667.6). Conclusion : This results indicated that accelerometer is useful tool for assessment of bilateral hand movement. Considering demographic characteristics, various subject group, further study is needed.

  • While the feasibility of vertical velocity as a threshold parameter for pre-impact fall detection has been verified, effects of sensor attachment locations and methods calculating vertical acceleration and velocity on the detection performance have not been studied yet. Regarding the vertical velocity-based pre-impact fall detection, this paper investigates detection accuracies of eight different cases depending on sensor locations (waist vs. sternum), vertical accelerations (accurate acceleration based on both accelerometer and gyroscope vs. approximated acceleration based on only accelerometer), and vertical velocities (velocity with attenuation vs. velocity difference). Test results show that the selection of waist-attached sensor, accurate acceleration, and velocity with attenuation based on accelerometer and gyroscope signals is the best in overall in terms of sensitivity and specificity of the detection as well as lead time.

  • MEMS accelerometer provides a low cost alternative in retrieving the acceleration signal for motion sensing. Theoretically, displacement can be calculated by double integrate the acceleration signal. However, in practical, it could not be done in straight forward manner due to several factors that exist in the real world. This experiment focuses on the processes from practical accelerometer signal acquisition till the result of double integration for low frequency vertical motion.

  • Accelerometer mounting fixtures were prepared with the different materials(Ti and SUS). The dynamic characteristics of the mounting fixture were analyzed by finite element method(FEM), and the mode shape of each order and the displacement response for modelling the mounting fixture were analyzed by ANSYS, then resonant frequencies of the mounting fixtures with Ti and SUS were 22.700 and 23.390 kHz, respectively. The dynamic characteristics of the mounting fixture with the different positions were obtained by using laser interferometer. The response of the accelerometer was nearly a constant from 40 Hz to 500 Hz, but the change of the acceleration was increased with an increase of the frequency above 500 Hz.

  • The process of producing high precision and light weight product is always exposed to impact load or shock. Because of this, isolator device is required. To measure the response of the isolator, accelerometer is practically used. However, the measured response of the accelerometer is different to the response of the isolator. To predict the response of the accelerometer and the isolator, 2-DOF damped system with an input shock is modeled using numerical analysis. 1-DOF damped system with a base excitation is also used to predict the response of the isolator. The mass ratio, damping ratio, and natural frequency ratio are then varied. The predicted responses from the two modeling approaches are compared and large errors are found.

  • In this study, problems of RTK (Real Time Kinematic)-GPS (Global Positioning System) and an accelerometer sensor when applied to structures were experimentally identified through a comparison between results of the displacement measurement using the RTK-GPS, the accelerometer, and LVDT (Linear variable differential transformer). Integrated displacement was calculated by the improved RTK-GPS and accelerometer on the frequency of observation and positioning accuracy. This integrated displacement was also compared with that of LVDT to check the validity of application and feasibility.

  • Accurate observation results of dynamic displacements are essential to the protection of civil structures. In this study, we evaluated the optimal methods of the RTK/GPS Accelerometer integration through comparison and analysis of several experiments results. Two methods will be used to calculate the dynamic displacements from the results of the acceleration data as well as two integration methods for measuring the dynamic, static, and quasi-static displacements by incorporating the displacement results from the RTK-GPS and Accelerometer. By using a Cantilever Beam and LVDT measurement, we were able to ensure that the different displacement comparisons would be reliable and accurate. As a results from experiments, the accelerometer processing method applied by use of accelerometers data was filtering with the double integral using FIR band-pass filter which is most optimal for assessing the dynamic displacements. Also, the integrated method using extracting substitution displacements is suitable for measuring synthetically the dynamic static and quasi-static displacements of civil structures with RTK-GPS and accelerometer.

  • Tip position control of a flexible cantilever is difficult due to the non-minimum phase dynamics that result from the finite propagating speed of a mechanical wave along the cantilever. In this paper, we propose a method for the tip position control using a light and cheap accelerometer that does not bring any significant change to the dynamics of the cantilever system. The linear system identification model of the flexible cantilever is obtained with measurements by a laser displacement sensor. A Kalman estimator is designed with this model and calculates the estimated tip position with the acceleration data of the accelerometer that is attached on the tip of the cantilever. To verify reliability of the estimator, the estimated tip position is used to the feedback control system that uses a fuzzy logic controller. The control results are compared with those of the fuzzy control system where the real tip position is measured by a laser displacement sensor. Also, the performance of the estimator with the accelerometer is presented and discussed.

  • This paper presents a novel fiber optic accelerometer system for monitoring vibration of large-size structures. The system is composed of one (or multiple) sensor head, a light control unit and a signal processing unit. The sensing mechanism of the sensor head is based on a novel integration of the moire fringe phenomenon with fiber optics to achieve a robust performance in addition to its immunity to EM interference, easy cabling, and low cost. In this paper, a prototype of the fiber optic accelerometer system has been developed successfully. A low-cost light control unit has been developed to drive the system's optic and electronic components. A unique algorithm has also been developed to derive the sensor's acceleration from the raw signals of the light control unit; it is implemented via a separate signal processing unit. Finally, the shaking table tests successfully demonstrate the performance and the potential of the moire fringe fiber optic sensor system to monitor the health of civil infrastructures.
