  • In this paper, the PID controller and Kalman filter are applied to improve the automobile cruise control in the environment with disturbance and noise, and the performance is verified through diverse simulation. First, a mathematical model for a automobile cruise control system is introduced. Second, the performance degradation due to disturbance in the basic open-loop control based cruise control system is shown and then PID controller-based feedback control system to resolve this problem is verified. Third, to improve the performance degradation due to sensor noise that may occur during the feedback process, a Kalman filter is applied and verified. Ultimately, it is verified that the designed cruise control system with PID controller and Kalman filter not only satisfies all performance conditions but also has the ability for disturbance rejection and noise reduction.

  • In this paper, a new multirate optimal finite impulse response (FIR) filter is proposed for the signal reconstruction in the nosy filter bank systems. The multirate optimal FIR filter replaces the conventional synthesis filters and the Kalman synthesis filter. First, the generic linear model is derived from the multirate state space model for an autoregressive (AR)input signal. Second, the multirate optimal FIR filter is derived from the multirate generic linear model using the minimum variance criterion. This paper also provides numerical examples and results. The simulation results illustrate that the performance is improved compared with conventional synthesis filters and the proposed filter has advantages over the Kalman synthesis filter.

  • In-flight aircraft engine performance estimation is one of the key techniques for advanced intelligent engine control and in-flight fault detection, isolation and accommodation. This paper detailed the current performance degradation estimation methods, and an improved hybrid Kalman filter via velocity-based LPV (VLPV) framework for these needs is proposed in this paper. Composed of a nonlinear on-board model (NOBM) and VLPV, the filter shows a hybrid architecture. The outputs of NOBM are used for the baseline of the VLPV Kalman filter, while the system performance degradation factors on-line estimated by the measured real system output deviations are fed back to the NOBM for its updating. In addition, the setting of the process and measurement noise covariance matrices' values are also discussed. By applying it to a commercial turbofan engine, simulation results show the efficiency.

  • This study proposes a bias correction method of dual-pol radar rain rate in real time using the dual Kalman filter. Unlike the conventional Kalman filter, the dual Kalman filter predicts state variables with two systems (state estimation system and model estimation system) at the same time. Bias of rain rate is corrected by applying the bias correction ratio to the rain rate estimate. The bias correction ratio is predicted from the state-space model of the dual Kalman filter. This method is applied to a storm event with long duration occurred in July 2016. Most of the bias correction ratios are estimated between 1 and 2, which indicates that the radar rain rate is underestimated than the ground rain rate. The AR (1) model is found to be appropriate for explaining the time series of the bias correction ratio. The time series of the bias correction ratio predicted by the dual Kalman filter shows a similar tendency to that of observation data. As the variability of the bias correction increases, the dual Kalman filter has better prediction performance than the Kalman filter. This study shows that the dual Kalman filter can be applied to the bias correction of radar rain rate, especially for long and heavy storm events.

  • Automotive Radar Systems are currently under development for various applications to increase accuracy and reliability. The target tracking is most important in single or multiple target environments for accuracy. The tracking algorithm provides smoothed and predicted data for target position and velocity(Doppler). To this end, the fixed gain filter(${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter, ${\alpha}{\beta}{\gamma}$ filter) and dynamic filter(Kalman filter, Singer-Kalman filter, etc) are commonly used. Gating is used to decide whether an observation is assigned to an existing track or new track. Gating algorithms are normally based on computing a statistical error distance between an observation and prediction. The data association takes the observation-to-track pairings that satisfied gating and determines which observation-to-track assignment will actually be made. For data association, NNPDA(Nearest Neighbor Probabilistic Data Association) algorithm is proposed. In this paper, we designed a target tracking system developed for an Automotive Radar System. We show the experimental results of the 77GHz FMCW radar sensor on the roads. Four tracking algorithms(${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter, ${\alpha}{\beta}{\gamma}$ filter, 2nd order Kalman filter, Singer-Kalman filter) have been compared and analyzed to evaluate the performance in test scenario.

  • As the basic Kalman filter is limited to be used for indoor navigation, and particle filters incur serious computational overhead, especially in mobile devices, we propose an adaptive hybrid filter for WiFi-based indoor positioning systems. The hybrid filter utilizes the same prediction framework of the basic Kalman filter, and it adopts the notion of particle filters only using a small number of particles. Restricting the predicts of a moving object to a small number of particles on a way network and substituting a dynamic weighting scheme for Kalman gain are the key features of the filter. The adaptive hybrid filter showed significantly better accuracy than the basic Kalman filter did, and it showed greatly improved performance in processing time and slightly better accuracy compared with a particle filter.

  • In this paper, we proposed realtime visual tracking system of moving object for 2D target using extended Kalman Filter Algorithm. A targeting marker are recongnized in each image frame and positions of targer object in each frame from a CCD camera while te targeting marker is attached to the tip of the SCARA robot hand. After the detection of a target coming into any position of the field-of-view, the target is tracked and always made to be located at the center of target window. Then, we can track the moving object which moved in inter-frames. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the Kalman filter algorithm for realtime tracking and estimated state value of filter, predicting the position of moving object to minimize an image processing area, and by reducing the effect by quantization noise of image

  • A Coordinate-Transformation Extended Robust Kalman Filter (CERKF) designed in the Krein space is proposed, and then applied to a nonlinear incoming ballistic missile tracking system with parameter uncertainties. First, the Extended Robust Kalman filter (ERKF) is proposed to handle the nonlinearity of measurement equation which occurs whenever the polar coordinate system is transformed into the Cartesian coordinate system. Moreover, linearization error inevitably occurs and deteriorates the tracking performance, which is considerably reduced by the proposed CERKF. Through the simulation results, we show that the proposed CERKF, which uses the measurement coordinate system, has less RMS error than the previous ERKF which is designed in the Krein space using the Cartesian system. We also verify that the robustness and the stability of the proposed filter are guaranteed in two radars: the phased way radar and the scanning radar

  • This paper aims at enlightening the properties, computational and implementation issues related to Kalman filter based state estimation algorithms and sliding mode observers, by applying them for estimating the states of a smart structure system. The Kalman based estimators considered in this work are Kalman filter and information filter and, the sliding mode observers considered are Utkin observer and higher order sliding mode observer. A fourth order linear time invariant model of a piezo actuated beam is used in this work. This structure is embedded with four number of piezo patches, of which two act as sensors, one as disturbance actuator and the other as control actuator. The performance of the state estimation algorithms is evaluated through simulation, for the first two vibrating modes of the piezo actuated structure, when the structure is maintained at first mode and second mode resonance.

  • In this paper, a robust stationary Kalman filter is designed by minimizing selected performance indices so that it is less sensitive to uncertainties. The uncertainties include not only stochastic factors such as process noise and measurement noise, but also deterministic factors such as unknown initial estimation error, modeling error and sensing bias. To reduce the effect on the uncertainties, three performance indices that should be minimized are selected based on the quantitative error analysis to both the deterministic and the stochastic uncertainties. The selected indices are the size of the observer gain, the condition number of the observer matrix, and the estimation error variance. The observer gain is obtained by optimally solving the multi-objectives optimization problem that minimizes the indices. The robustness of the proposed filter is demonstrated through the comparison with the standard Kalman filter.
