We objerved the following results from The Yellow Emperior's Canon of Internal medicine through the investigation of literature about fever. 1. Fever is divieded two type asthenic fever sthenic heat and It accused two type of excess of Yang-exoganous heat, deficiency of Yin-internal fever 2. The cause of fever is divieded three type, exoganous cause, internal cause non-exoganouse and internal cause Among the cause of fever Exoganous cause is almost affected by cold-evil Internal cause is affected by deficiency of Yin and seven emotion caused by having sex after intoxigation or over-exertion, and non-exoganous and internal cause bring about the difference of a personal life and food and drink 3. The sympton produced by fever is appeared differently through-pulse and meridian and they are indication of Diagnosis 4. The theory of treatment about fever are as follows Drinking cold-water Practising acupuncture Trerating hot-evil by cold Dispel cold by warm Treating cold-evil by heat Promote vital energy circulation by cold Treating warm-evil by cold Promating circulation by cold Treating cold-evil by warm Promoting circulation by heat.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to help develop a guideline for the common cold. We searched recent clinical studies of the common cold in Western medicine and reviewed their objectives, inclusion and exclusion criteria, primary outcome, secondary outcome, and assessment tools to establish evidenced-based guideline. Methods: We searched electronic databases (Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE) to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about the common cold for the last 10 years. We included 29 RCTs and showed their research summary via their objectives, participants, interventions, control, treatment duration, and results. We also analyzed the definition of the common cold presented in the article, inclusion and exclusion criteria, primary and secondary outcomes, and assessment tools. Results: We reported the aforementioned areas in detail. At first, the definition of the common cold was confused across the articles. Second, herbal medication clinical trials for the common cold have been extensively studied recently. Third, the eligibility criteria frequently included the Jackson Symptom score. Fourth, validated assessment tools (i.e., the Wisconsin Upper Respiratory Symptom Survey-21) have only been used in a few recent studies. Conclusions: Our research will be helpful to establish Korean herbal medicine clinical trial guidelines for the common cold.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to find an effective medical device to detect cold sensation of hands. Methods: Patients with cold sensation of hands (N=42) were recruited in July 2013. We surveyed patients’ general characteristics, severity of cold sensation, body temperature in Nogung (PC8) and Hyeopbaek (LU4) measured with a digital thermometer, digital infrared thermal imaging, and pulse wave velocity. Results: The relation between severity of cold sensation and temperature in Nogung (PC8) and Hyeopbaek (LU4) was statistically significant. The results showed a higher correlation of severity of cold sensation with Nogung (PC9) than with Hyeopback (LU4) temperature. No other indices were statistical significant. Conclusions: Measuring the Nogung (PC9) temperature is most reasonable for assessing the severity of cold sensation of hands. To generalize this result, however, a large-scale study is warranted.
The main current in the pathology of oriental medicine is composed of etiologic factor, pathogenesis and clinical manifestation. The access of a disease is consist of etiologic factor, location of the lesion, nature of the disease and patient's condition. The nature of disease and the property of a drug are inseparably related to each other. The nature of disease is composed of six exogenous factors, cold and heat, deficiendy and excess, Yinyang and pain. Cold nature is divided into cold symptom due to excess and asthenia cold, fever nature is divided into sthenic fever and asthenic fever. According to the location, cold and heat can be subdivided into heat in the upper and cold in the lower, cold in the upper and heat in the lower, exterior cold and interior heat, exterior heat and interior cold. Yin syndrome characterized by hypofunction of the viscera is generated from insufficiency of yang-qi, excess of yin-coldness, deficiency of both qi and the blood.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between Cold-Heat pattern tendency and demographic traits, physical character, and vital signs in hypertensive patients taking anti-hypertensive agents. Methods : 28 hypertensive patients 30 to 69 years old were recruited. We assessed their general characteristics, physical characteristics (height, weight, waist circumference, etc.), vital signs without respiratory rate (blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature) and administered a Cold-Heat pattern questionnaire. After that, we analyzed statistical data on separate groups according to Cold-Heat characteristics or other criteria. Results : 1. Heat group patients had statistically higher scores in waist, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and pulse rate. 2. Over weighted group patients had statistically lower scores in cold Pattern Identification. 3. Higher BMI group (above 23/25) patients had statistically significantly higher Heat scores and lower Cold scores, higher waist circumference group patients had lower Cold scores. Conclusions : From the above result in hypertensive patients taking hypertensive agents, Heat group had a obesity tendency and the inverse is also valid. Later, progressed study based on more samples and varied data will contribute to diagnosis the Cold-heat Pattern identification in hypertensive patients.
Yeonkyopaedok-san(YPS) extract is widely used to treat the common cold. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of YPS on the common cold. Two hundred Patients with common colds of recent onset were randomized to the double blind, placebo-controlled study. They received 800 mg YPS extract or placebo in capsules, orally dissolved 3 times a day for 7 days. The total symptom score was assessed by the physician, using a 5-point scale on start and finish. Resolution of cold symptoms based on subjective daily symptoms. Total symptom score was significantly decreased in YPS groups in comparison to that in placebo group (p=0.027). Headache (p=0.012), loss of appetite (p=0.037), eyeball discomfort (p=0.002) were more affected. Time to resolution of cold symptoms did not show significant effect (p=0.592). Adverse effects were less in the YPS group than placebo group (2% vs 3%). In this community-based, randomized controlled trial, YPS were effective in treating cold symptoms in college students.
We are developing the methods for the objective and systematic diagnosis, but in actuality the relativity between a diagnosis of Korean medical doctor to a symptom of patients and the conformity to the expression of the Korean medical diagnostic mechanism is short of the statistical data. so, the questionnaire of Cold-Heat & Deficiency-Excess and a diagnosis of Korean medical doctor and a result of the Korean medical diagnostic mechanism, through the relationship of those, we have offered the objective data for diagnostic validity. The study group was 750 volunteers who diagnosed by Cold-Heat & Deficiency-Excess, out of 1475 volunteers who participated in Korean-Western medical examination. We compared the results of the questionnaires for Cold-Heat & Deficiency-Excess patternization through the questionnaire with a diagnosis of Korean medical doctor. we also studied the diagnostic validity for the item of the questionnaire by statistics analysis. It is proper that 9 questions of 16 questions for the Cold, 6 questions of 14 questions for the Heat, 13 questions of 14 questions for the Deficiency, 6 questions of 9 questions for the Excess, and there is close correlation between the questionnaire to the diagnosis. The difference between the questionnaire score is meaningful(p=0.000), this conforms to the diagnosis of the Korean medical doctor, so the questionnaire have the validity. The result of the questionnaire of Cold-Heat & Deficiency-Excess conform to a diagnosis of Korean medical doctor, it carries an important meaning by the measure of diagnosis, and it is necessary for further study for the significance of the medical diagnostic mechanism.
Objectives: To inform the clinical features of drug-induced liver injury (DILI), and study traditional Korean medicine (TKM)-based strategies or therapeutics. Methods: A female patient with hepatitis after long term use of medication for cold symptoms was treated with Oriental therapies, after which the clinical outcome was evaluated by serum biochemical parameters and ultrasonography. Results: Clinical and biochemical levels were fluctuating during administration of cold medicine, but the patient completely recovered her health with herbal medicines. Conclusion: This case report would provide information about a typical DILI by western medicine followed by treatment with traditional Korean medicine.
Background: Peripheral nerve injury sometimes leads to chronic neuropathic pain such as causalgia. A subset of patients with causalgia have a sympathetically maintained pain which is often evoked by cooling stimuli. However, our knowledge on adrenergic receptor types responsible for cold-evoked pain that is sympathetically dependent is lacking. The present study was conducted to investigate subtypes of adrenoceptors involved in mediating cold-evoked pain that developed following peripheral nerve injury. Methods: Neuropathic surgery was performed by a unilateral ligation of L5 and L6 spinal nerves of rats. Behavioral sign of cold-evoked pain was examined for 5 min by measuring cumulative duration of time that the rat lifted its foot off a metal plate held at cold temperature ($5^{\circ}C$). Whether cold-evoked pain behavior was affected by antagonists of various subtypes of adrenoceptors, which were administered intraperitoneally before and after the ligation, was investigated. Results: After ligation, duration of foot lifting on the ligated side at cold temperature increased as compared to the pre-operative period. This increase maintained for the entire 40-day test period. Pretreatment with alpha-antagonist phentolamine produced a suppression of cold-evoked pain behavior that was not affected by beta-antagonist propranolol pretreatment. Prazosin, alpha-1 antagonist, suppressed cold- evoked pain behavior when treated either before or after nerve ligation. On the other hand, alpha-2 antagonist yohimbine was without effect on cold-evoked pain behavior whether it was treated before or after the ligation. Conclusions: The results suggest that peripheral nerve injury develops cold-evoked pain that is sympathetically dependent, and that alpha-1 adrenoreceptor plays a critical role for the generation of this type of pain in its initiation as well as maintenance.
