We examined the effects of environmental factors on zoospore release and germling growth of the green tide alga Cladophora albida under various conditions of temperature${\times}$irradiance (zoospore release), temperature${\times}$irradiance${\times}$ nutrient (germling growth), and a single factor test of salinity. Zoospore release was maximized at $30^{\circ}C$ and $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in the temperature irradiance experiment and at 34 psu in the salinity experiment. Maximum germling growth was observed at $25^{\circ}C$ with $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and PES (Provasoli's Enriched Seawater) in the temperature irradiance nutrient experiment, and at 34 psu in the salinity experiment. Germlings grew faster at higher irradiances for a given temperature level, and also grew faster as salinity increased over the range of 5-34 psu. Overall, optimal environmental conditions for zoospore release were $30^{\circ}C$, $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and 34 psu. Maximal germling growth occurred at $25^{\circ}C$, $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, PES, and 34 psu. C. albida blooms are most likely to occur under these optimal environmental conditions, as plentiful zoospore release and rapid germling growth lead to population growth.
Characteristics of sophorolipid and rhamnolipid were evaluated as antifungal agents against plant pathogenic fungi. Eight percent of mycelial growth of plant pathogen (Phytophthora sp. and Pythium sp.) was inhibited by 200 mg/l of rhamnolipid or 500 mg/l of sophorolipid, and zoospore motility of Phytophthora sp. decreased by $90\%$ at 50 mg/l of rhamnolipid and $80\%$ at 100 mg/l of sophorolipid. The effective concentrations for zoospore lysis were two times higher than those of zoospore motility inhibition. The highest zoospore lysis was observed with Phytophthora capsici; $80\%$ lysis at 100 mg/I of di-rhamnolipid or lactonic sophorolipid, showing the dependency of structure on the lysis. In the pot test, the damping-off disease incidence ratio decreased to $42\%\;and\;33\%$ of control value at 2,000 mg/l sophorolipid and rhamnolipid, respectively. These results showed the potential of microbial glycolipid biosurfactants as an effective antifungal agent against damping-off plant pathogens.

In the aquatic fungus Allomyces macrogynus the effects of $Ca^{2+}$ and cAMP on the intracellular signal transduction of zoospore germination were studied using in vitro protein phosphorylation assay system. An endogenously phosphorylated protein (p50) having molecular weight of 50 kDa on SDS-PAGE was found in soluble fractions of both zoospore and mycelium. In zoospore extract, the endogenous phosphorylation of p50 was weak without any effectors, but was enhanced by $Ca^{2+}$ and even more by cAMP. Phosphorylation of the same protein in mycelial extract was high only in the absence of cAMP. Irrespective of the presence of $Ca^{2+}$ and cAMP, its phosphorylation was antagonistically suppressed in assay of combined zoospore and mycelial extracts. These results suggest that p50 is interconvertible in phosphorylation/dephosphorylation as a novel protein involved in germination of A. macrogynus. The antagonistic effect of cAMP to the phosphorylation of p50s from different developmental stages may be important in the regulation of cellular differentiation.
Effects of environmental factors on the zoospore release and germling growth of Chaetomorpha linum were examined. Zoospore release and germling growth experiments were carried out under a combination of temperatures ${\times}$ irradiances, and a single factor of irradiances, salinities, daylength and nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus). Zoospore release was maximal under condition of $20^{\circ}C{\times}100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in a factorial experiment (temperatures ${\times}$ irradiances), at $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in irradiance experiment and at 34 psu in salinity conditions. After 24 days in culture, germling growth was maximal at $25^{\circ}C{\times}100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in temperatures ${\times}$ irradiances and at normal seawater (34 psu) in salinity. Germling growth is faster at higher irradiance under same temperature condition and it increased with increasing daylengths (8-16 h). Chaetomorpha linum grew in wide range of N and P concentrations. The growth of germling was maximal at $50{\mu}M\;{PO_4}^{3-}$ and $40{\mu}M\;{NH_4}^+$. Germling growth was more effective under nitrogen addition than phosphorus addition in culture. In conclusion, optimal environmental conditions for zoospore release were $20^{\circ}C$, $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, and 34 psu. In addition, the optimal germling growth was observed at $25^{\circ}C$, $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, 34 psu, 16 h, $50{\mu}M\;({PO_4}^{3-})$ and $40{\mu}M\;{(NH_4}^+)$.

Crude extract of Xanthium strumarium inhibited mycelial growth and zoospore germination of Phytophthora drechsleri, the causal agent of Atractylis rot, in vitro. Fresh sap from X. strumarium at 50-fold dilution was highly effective in controlling the disease Incidence in pot and field trials. Purified extracts from cocklebur Inhibited mycelial growth and zoospore germination in vitro at a concentration of 12.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and 15.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, respectively. Hyphal tips affected by the compound showed malformation. The antifungal compound puri- fied fromX. strumarium was identified as 4-oxo-1 (5), 2,11, (13)-xanthatriene-12,8-olide, known as "deacetyl xanthumin".min".uot;.
A severe Phytophthora rot of strawberry caused by a species of Phytophthora has been widely occurred at major cultivation areas of Kimhae on August in 1997. Incidence of the disease was obtained in the range of 69.2~83.6% in surveyed 4 fields and showed an average of 75.2%. A species of Phytophthora was mostly isolated from the crown of infected strawberry plants and all the isolates were identified as P. nicotianae var. nicotianae (=P. parasitica). The fungus showed strong pathogenicity on strawberry by inoculation test. As a result of the leaf inoculation using mycelial disks of the fungus, both leaves and petioles were darkly browned, and were finally blighted. As a result of the root inoculation of zoospore suspension, both roots and crowns were rotten with dark brown. Although the fungus produced sporangia either on V-8 juice agar medium or liquid medium, the sporangia observed on the liquid medium appeared to be broadly turbinate and noncaducous. Moreover the fungus cultured on the liquid medium often produced sporangia having two papilla. The number of zoospores in sporangia was found to be ranged from 3 or 4 to as many as 20 or 25. In addition, the released zoospore from the sporangium became the cystospore during the prolonged culture of the fungus. The sporangia were measured as av. 49$\times$35 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with l/b ratio of 1.43. All isolates from crowns were heterothallic and A1 mating type since oospores were abundantly formed on clarified V-8 juice agar by dual culture with P. capsici A2 mating type. Aplerotic oospores were sized 24-26 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Antheridia were always amphigynous and recoreded an average of 12$\times$10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Hyphal swlling were easily observed, and terminal or intercalary chlamydospores were abundantly formed on V-8 juice agar as well as in C/Z solution and sized av. 28.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This is the first report of Phytophthora rot of strawberry in Korea.

A chitinolytic bacterial strain having strong antifungal activity was isolated and identified as Burkholderia cepacia MPC-7 based on 16S rRNA gene analysis. MPC-7 solubilized insoluble phosphorous in hydroxyapatite agar media. It produced gluconic acid and 2-keto-gluconic acid related to the decrease in pH of broth culture. The antagonist produced benzoic acid (BA) and phenylacetic acid (PA). The authentic compounds, BA and PA, showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against yeast, several bacterial and fungal pathogens in vitro. To demonstrate the biocontrol efficiency of MPC-7 on late blight disease caused by Phyto-phthora capsici, pepper plants in pot trials were treated with modified medium only (M), M plus zoospore inoculation (MP), MPC-7 cultured broth (B) and B plus zoospore inoculation (BP). With the sudden increase in root mortality, plants in MP wilted as early as five days after pathogen inoculation. However, plant in BP did not show any symptom of wilting until five days. Root mortality in BP was markedly reduced for as much as 50%. Plants in B had higher dry weight, P concentration in root, and larger leaf area compared to those in M and MP. These results suggested that B. cepacia MPC-7 should be considered as a candidate for the biological fertilizer as well as antimicrobial agent for pepper plants.
