  • ZnO wire-like thin films were synthesized through thermal oxidation of sputtered Zn metal films in dry air. Their nanostructure was confirmed by SEM, revealing a wire-like structure with a width of less than 100 nm and a length of several microns. The gas sensors using ZnO wire-like films were found to exhibit excellent $H_2$ gas sensing properties. In particular, the observed high sensitivity and fast response to $H_2$ gas at a comparatively low temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ would lead to a reduction in the optimal operating temperature of ZnO-based $H_2$ gas sensors. These features, together with the simple synthesis process, demonstrate that ZnO wire-like films are promising for fabrication of low-cost and high-performance $H_2$ gas sensors operable at low temperatures. The relationship between the sensor sensitivity and $H_2$ gas concentration suggests that the adsorbed oxygen species at the surface is $O^-$.

  • Well-aligned Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires were synthesized on silicon substrates by a carbothermal evaporation method using a mixture of ZnO and graphite powder with Au thin film was used as a catalyst. The XRD results showed that as-prepared product is the hexagonal wurzite ZnO nanostructure and SEM images demonstrated that ZnO nanowires had been grown along the [0001] direction with hexagonal cross section. As-grown ZnO nanowires were coated with glucose oxidase (GOx) for glucose sensing. Glucose converted into gluconic acid by reaction with GOx and two electrons are generated. They transfer into ZnO nanowires due to the electric force between electrons and the positively charged ZnO nanostructures in PBS. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was employed for investigating the movements of electrons, and the peak PL intensity increased with the glucose concentration and became saturated when the glucose concentration is above 10 mM. These results demonstrate that ZnO nanostructures have potential applications in biosensors.

  • We demonstrate the growth of a sheet-like ZnO membrane on ZnO nano rod layers. The growth process is composed of 3 steps of ZnO seed formation, ZnO nano rod growth and sheet-like ZnO membrane formation on those nano rods. To confirm the fundamental growth mechanism, the lattice structures of each step were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurement. Analysis of the relation between the texture coefficient and the surface shape of the ZnO membrane on the ZnO nano rods shows that the surface morphology of ZnO nano structures can be controlled using the temperature of the growing solution and the concentration of the chemical solution.

  • Visible light-sensitive $TiO_2$ and ZnO nanostructure materials have attracted great attention as the promising material for solar energy conversion systems such as photocatalysts for water splitting and environmental purification as well as nano-biosensors. Success of their applications relies on how to control their surface state behaviors related to the exciton dynamics and optoelectronic properties. In this paper, we briefly review some recent works on single nanoparticle photoluminescence (PL) technique and its application to observation of their surface state behaviors which are raveled by the conventional ensemble-averaged spectroscopic techniques. This review provides an opportunity to understand the temporal and spatial heterogeneities within an individual nanostructure, allowing for the potential use of single-nanoparticle approaches in studies of their photoenergy conversion and nano-scale optical biosensing.

  • This study reports the hydrogen sulfide gas sensing properties of ZnO nanorods bundle and the investigation of gas sensing mechanism. Also the improvement of sensing properties was also studied through the application of ZnO heterstructured nanorods. The 1-Dimensional ZnO nano-structure was synthesized by hydrothermal method and ZnO nano-heterostructures were prepared by sonochemical reaction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra confirmed a well-crystalline ZnO of hexagonal structure. The gas response of ZnO nanorods bundle sensor increased with increasing temperature, which is thought to be due to chemical reaction of nanorods with gas molecules. Through analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the sensing mechanism of ZnO nanorods bundle sensor was explained by well-known surface reaction between ZnO surface atoms and hydrogen sulfide. However at high sensing temperature, chemical conversion of ZnO nanorods becomes a dominant sensing mechanism in current system. In order to improve the gas sensing properties, simple type of gas sensor was fabricated with ZnO nano-heterostructures, which were prepared by deposition of CuO, Au on the ZnO nanorods bundle. These heteronanostructures show higher gas response and higher current level than ZnO nanorods bundle. The gas sensing mechanism of the heteronanostructure can be explained by the chemical conversion of sensing material through the reaction with target gas.

  • ZnO nanowire is known as synthesizable and good mechanical properties. And, stimuli-responsive polymer is widely used in the application of tunable sensing device. So, we combined these characteristics to make precise tunable sensing devise. In this work, we investigate the dependence of ZnO nanowire alignment and morphology on si substrate using nanosphere template with various conditions via hydrothermal process. Also, pH-temperature dependant tuning ability of nanostructure was studied. The brief experimental scheme is as follow. First, Zno seed layer was coated on a si wafer ($20{\times}20mm$) by spin coater. And then $1.15{\mu}m$ sized close-packed PS nanospheres were formed on a cleaned si substrate by using gas-liquid-solid interfacial self-assembly method. After that, zinc oxide nanowires were synthesized using hydrothermal method. Before the wire growth, to specify the growth site, heat treatment was performed. Finally, NIPAM(N-Isopropylacrylamide) was coated onto as-fabricated nanostructure and irradiated by UV light to form the PNIPAM network. The morphology, structures and optical properties are investigated by FE-SEM(Field Emission Scanning electron Microscopy), XRD(X-ray diffraction), OM(Optical microscopy), and WCA(water contact angle).

  • The effect of oxygen pressure in the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures through thermal evaporation of Zn powder was investigated. The thermal evaporation process was carried out in oxygen ambient for 1 hr at $1,000^{\circ}C$ under different pressures. The oxygen pressure was changed in range of 0.5 ~ 900 Torr. Any nanostructure was not formed on the specimens prepared at oxygen pressures lower than 10 Torr. When oxygen pressure was 100 Torr, ZnO nanowires were observed. With increasing the oxygen pressure to 500 Torr, the morphology of ZnO nanostructures changed from wire to tetrapod. For all the samples, room temperature photoluminescence spectra show a strong green emission peak at around 550 nm.

  • A prerequisite for the development of graphene-based field effect transistors (FETs) is reliable control of the type and concentration of carriers in graphene. These parameters can be manipulated via the deposition of atoms, molecules, and polymers onto graphene as a result of charge transfer that takes place between the graphene and adsorbates. In this work, we demonstrate a unique and facile methodology for the homogenous and stable p-type doping of graphene by hybridization with ZnO thin films fabricated by MeV electron beam irradiation (MEBI) under ambient conditions. The formation of the ZnO/graphene hybrid nanostructure was attributed to MEBI-stimulated dissociation of zinc acetate dihydrate and a subsequent oxidation process. A ZnO thin film with an ultra-flat surface and uniform thickness was formed on graphene. We found that homogeneous and stable p-type doping was achieved by charge transfer from the graphene to the ZnO film.

  • The nano-array of the vertically aligned rod-like particles grown on ZnO coated glass-substrates was obtained via hydrothermal process. ZnO thin film coatings were prepared on the glass substrates using a MOD (metallorganic deposition) dip-coating method with zinc chloride dihydrate as starting material and 2-ethylhexanol as solvent. ZnO nanorods were synthesized on the seeded substrates by hydrothermal method at $80^{\circ}C$ using zinc-nitrate hexahydrate as a Zn source and sodium hydroxide as a mineralizer. Under the hydrothermal condition, the rod-like nanocrystals were easily attaching on the already ZnO seeded (coated) glass surface. It has been shown that the hydrothermal synthesis parameters are key factors in the nucleation and growth of ZnO crystallites. By controlling of hydrothermal parameters, the ZnO particulate morphology could be easily tailored. Rod-shaped ZnO arrays on the glass substrates consisted of elongated crystals having 6-fold symmetry were predominantly developed at high Zn precursor concentration in the pH range 7~11.
