  • Male broiler chicks were fed graded levels of organic zinc (zinc-methionine) supplementation to investigate the effects of partial or complete substitution of the organic zinc source for inorganic ones on the development of lymphoid organs and immunological responses. A total of 450 day-old male broilers were distributed into groups of 10 chicks and randomly assigned to nine experimental diets during a 42-day feeding trial. Dietary treatments consisted of two basal diets supplemented with 40 mg/kg added zinc as feed-grade Zn sulfate or Zn oxide in which, Zn was replaced with that provided from zinc-methionine (ZnMet) complex at the levels of 25, 50, 75 or 100%. Two randomly-selected birds from each pen replicate were bled and then slaughtered by cervical cutting on the final day of the trial to measure leukocyte subpopulations and relative weights of lymphoid organs. Among lymphoid organs, only thymus weight was affected (p<0.05) by dietary treatments. The sulfate-supplemented birds were heavier (p<0.01) in relative weight of thymus than oxide-supplemented birds. The 10 days of age-assessed cutaneous hypersensivity reaction was stronger in chicks fed ZnMet-containing diets. Dietary ZnMet supplementation caused (p<0.05) an increase in proportion of lymphocytes and consequently a decrease in heterophil to lymphocyte ratio. Diet fortification by zinc-methionine complex increased (p<0.01) Newcastle antibody titer at 19 days of age. Also, a similar response was observed in antibody titers at 6 and 12 d after infectious bronchitis vaccine administration. There was no significant effect of replacement of dietary zinc on antibody titer against infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) at the 6th d post-vaccine inoculation; however, at d 12 after vaccination, ZnMet-fortified diets improved antibody titer against IBDV. Although dietary inclusion of ZnMet had no marked effect on primary antibody titer against sheep erythrocytes, effective responses were observed during secondary reaction from the viewpoint of both total antibody and immunoglobulin Y (IgY) titers. From the present findings, it can be concluded that dietary supplementation with organic zinc improves both cellular and humoral immune responses. It is necessary to replace 75% of supplemental inorganic zinc with organic ZnMet complex to achieve the optimum immunological responses in broiler chicks.

  • [ $Zn(BH_4)_2$ ](8.4 wt% theoretical hydrogen storage capacity powders have been successfully synthesized by mechanochemical reaction from mixtures of $ZnCl_2$ and $NaBH_4$ powders in a 1:2 molar ratio in different times. $$ZnCl_2+2NaBH_4{\rightarrow}Zn(BH_4)_2+2NaCl$$ (1) $Zn(BH_4)_2$ powders were characterized by X-ray diffractometry(XRD), and Furier Transform Infrared spectrometry(FT-IR). The thermal stabilities of $Zn(BH_4)_2$ powders were studied by Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), Thermogravimetry analysis(TGA), and Mass spectrometry(MS). $Zn(BH_4)_2$ can be tested for hydrogen evolution without further purification. The reaction to yield hydrogen is irreversible, the other products being compounds of Zn, and borane. $Zn(BH_4)_2$ thermally decomposes to release borane and hydrogen gas between about 85 and 150$^{\circ}C$.

  • The ZnSe epilayers were grown on the GaAs substrate by hot wall epitaxy. After the ZnSe epilayers treated in the vacuum-, Zn-, and Se-atmosphere, respectively, the defects of the epilayer were investigated by means of the low-temperature photoluminescence measurement. The dominant peaks at 2.7988 eV and 2.7937 eV obtained from the PL spectrum of the as-grown ZnSe epilayer were found to be consistent with the upper and the lower polariton peak of the exciton, I$_2$ (D$^{\circ}$, X), bounded to the neutral donor associated with the Se-vacancy. This donor-impurity binding energy was calculated to be 25.3meV The exciton peak, lid, at 2.7812 eV was confirmed to be bound to the neutral acceptor corresponded with the Zn-vacancy. The I$_1$$\^$d/ peak was dominantly observed in the ZnSe/GaAs:Se epilayer treated in the Se-atmosphere. This Se-atmosphere treatment may convert the ZnSe/GaAs:Se epilayer into the p-type. • We report Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods synthesis and electrochemical luminescence (ECL) cell fabrication. The ECL cell was fabricated using the electrode of ZnO nanorods and Ru(II) complex ($Ru(bpy)_3{^{2+}}$) as a luminescence materials. The fabricated ECL cell is composed of F-doped $SnO_2$ (FTO) glass/ Ru(II)/ZnO nanorods/FTO glass. The highest intensity of the emitting light was obtained at the wavelength of ~620 nm which corresponds to dark-orange color. At a bias voltage of 3V, the measured ECL efficiencies were 5 $cd/m^2$ for cell without ZnO nanorod, 145 $cd/m^2$ for ZnO nanorods-$5{\mu}m$, 208 $cd/m^2$ for ZnO nanorods-$8{\mu}m$ and 275 $cd/m^2$ for ZnO nanorods-$10{\mu}m$, respectively. At a bias voltage of 3.5V, the use of ZnO nanorods increases ECL intensities by about 3 times compared to the typical ECL cell without the use of ZnO nanorods.

  • $Zn_2Ti_{1-x}Fe_xO_4\;(0\;{\leq}\;x\;{\leq}\;0.7)$ photocatalysts were synthesized by polymerized complex (PC) method and investigated for its physico-chemical as well as optical properties. $Zn_2Ti_{1-x}Fe_xO_4$ can absorb not only UV light but also visible light region due to doping of Fe in the Ti site of $Zn_2TiO_4$ lattice because of the band transition from Fe 3d to the Fe 3d + Ti3d hybrid orbital. The photocatalytic activity of Fe doped $Zn_2TiO_4$ samples for hydrogen production under UV light irradiation decreased with an increase in Fe concentration in $Zn_2TiO_4$. Consequently, there exists an optimized concentration of iron for improved photocatalytic activity under visible light (${\lambda}{\leq}$420 nm)

  • We prepared ZnS thin films via chemical bath deposition (CBD) in an aqueous solution of ammonia ($NH_3$) and hydrazine ($N_2H_4$). The composition ratio of hydrazine used was 0%, 17%, 22%, 29%, or 50%. We investigated the effects of hydrazine and ammonia on the growth, and the structural and optical properties of ZnS in terms of surface uniformity, voids, and grain size. We found that during the growth of ZnS films, hydrazine was very effective for improving the surface morphology and layer uniformity with fast layer formation, while it had no effect on the bandgap energy, $E_g$.

  • The use of ZnO and stearic acid is very well known in sulfenamide accelerated sulfur vulcanization of diene elastomers. Zn-ion coated nano filler has been developed and tested, in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) as sulfur vulcanizing activator cum reinforcing filler. In this study Zinc oxide has been replaced by the Zn-ion coated nano silica filler with an aim to study the dual role of this nanofiller in SBR. The presence of Zn-ion on the nano silica filler surface activates the sulfur vulcanization by involving Zn++ in to the sulfurating complex formed with thiazole from sulfenamide. The increase of Zn-ion, on the nanofiller, decrease the scorch safety of the elastomer compound but increase the tensile strength, state of cure and tear strength and attain maximum at its 10% level. The presence of stearic acid increases the rate of vulcanization. Replacement of stearic acid with mono-stearate, however, increases the vulcanization rate but decrease the ultimate state of cure. A mechanistic scheme involving dual function of this nanofiller has been suggested.
