  • The SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were produced by subjecting a 40:60 (vol.%) mixture of zirconium diboride($ZrB_2$) powder and ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) matrix to spark plasma sintering(SPS) under argon atmosphere at 50MPa(P50) and 60MPa(P60) pressure. The relative density, 94.13% of P60 sample was lower than that, 94.75% of P50 sample. Reactions between ${\beta}$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed via x-ray diffraction (hereafter, XRD) analysis. The trend of flexural strength of SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were in accordance with the relative density. The properties of a SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites through SPS under argon atmosphere were positive temperature coefficient resistance in the temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$, and electrical resistivity of P50 and P60 sample were $6.75{\times}10^{-4}$ and $7.22{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ at room temperature, respectively.

  • titanate and a silicon carbide/zirconium diboride particulate composite have each been blended with thermoplastic of aqueous binders and extruded. The green extrudates have diameters ranging between 50 and 150 ㎛ and polyethylene-base 150 ${\mu}m$ diameter fibers can be drawn down at elevated temperature to approximately 40 ${\mu}m$ diameter. Hollow fibers with 150${\mu}m$ outer and 90 ${\mu}m$ inner diameter can also be fabricated. Green fibers have been processed into chopped fiber felts for use as gas distributors/current collectors in an experimental solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and the first attempts at producing simple textile structures have been successful. The fibers, tubes and felts have been successfully debound and sintered and characterization of the sintered PSZ fibers, for example, has revealed a density in excess of 99% and tensile failure stresses up to 1.0 GPa for 78 ${\mu}m$ diameter fibers.

  • The sintering behaviour of monolithic zirconium diboride (ZrB$_{2 }$) and ZrB$_{2 }$-based composite ZrB$_{2 }$-ZrC were studied using a pressureless sintering technique. The specimens were prepared using commercially available ZrB$_{2 }$ and ZrC powder which were pressed and subjected to pressureless sintering. The effects of lanthanum and neodymium used as sintering aids in the sintering processes were investigated. The sintered specimens were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The ZrB$_{2 }$ specimen prepared using and addition of 1 wt% lanthanum and pressurelessly sintered at $2200^{\circ}C$ showed the maximum relative density of 96%. The ZrB$_{2 }$-ZrC composite specimen without the addition of any sintering aids exhibits the maximum sintered density but contains significantly detectable amount of secondary phase.

  • The composites were fabricated by adding 0, 15, 20, 25[vol.%] Zirconium Diboride(hereafter, $ZrB_2$) powders as a second phase to Silicon Carbide(hereafter, SiC) matrix. The physical, mechanical and electrical properties of electroconductive SiC ceramic composites by spark plasma sintering(hereafter, SPS) were examined. Reactions between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed in the XRD analysis The relative density of mono SiC, SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+25[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are 90.97[%], 74.62[%], 77.99[%] and 72.61[%] respectively. The XRD phase analysis of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites reveals high of SiC and $ZrB_2$ and low of ZrO2 phase. The electrical resistivity of mono SiC, SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+25[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are $4.57{\times}10^{-1}$, $2.13{\times}10^{-1}$, $1.53{\times}10^{-1}$ and $6.37{\times}10^{-2}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ at room temperature, respectively. The electrical resistivity of mono SiC, SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+25[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ are Negative Temperature Coefficient Resistance(hereafter, NTCR) in temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 100[$^{\circ}C$]. It is convinced that SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composite by SPS can be applied for heater above 1000[$^{\circ}C$].

  • ZrB2 ceramic and ZrB2 ceramic composites with the addition of SiC, WC, and SiC/WC are successfully synthesized by a spark plasma sintering method. During high-temperature oxidation, SiC additive form a SiO2 amorphous outer scale layer and SiC-deplete ZrO2 scale layer, which decrease the oxidation rate. WC addition forms WO3 during the oxidation process to result in a ZrO2/WO3 liquid sintering layer, which is known to improve the anti-oxidation effect. The addition of SiC and WC to ZrB2 reduces the oxygen effective diffusivity by one-fifth of that of ZrB2. The addition of both SiC and WC shows the formation of a SiO2 outer dense glass layer and ZrO2/WO3 layer so that the anti-oxidation effect is improved three times as much as that of ZrB2. Therefore, SiC- and WC-added ZrB2 has a lower two-order oxygen effective diffusivity than ZrB2; it improves the anti-oxidation performance 3 times as much as that of ZrB2.

  • The influences of ZrB$_2$ additions to SiC on microstructural, DDM(Electrical Discharge Machining), mechanical and electrical properties were investigated. composites were prepared by adding 15, 30, 45 vol.% ZrB$_2$particles as a second phase to SiC matrix. SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites obtained by hot pressing for high temperature structural application were fully dense with the relative densities over 99%. The fracture toughness of the composites were increased with the ZrB$_2$contents. In case of composite containing 30vol.% ZrB$_2$, the flexural strength and fracture toughness showed 45% and 60% increase, respectively compared to that of monolithic SiC sample. The electrical resistivities of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites decreased significantly with the ZrB$_2$ contents. The electrical resistivity of SiC-30vol.% ZrB$_2$ composite showed 6.50$\times$10$^{-4}$ $\Omega$.cm. Cutting velocity of EDM of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites are directly proportional to duty factor of pulse width. Surface roughness, however, are not all proportional to pulse width. Higher-flexural strength composites show a trend toward smaller crater volumes, leaving a smoother surface; the average surface roughness of the SiC-ZrB$_2$ 15 vol.% composite with the flexural strengthe of 375㎫ was 3.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, whereas the SiC-ZrB$_2$ 30.vol% composite of 457㎫ was 1.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In the SEM micrographs of the fracture surface of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites, the SiC-ZrB$_2$ two phases are distinct; the white phase is the ZrB$_2$and the gray phase is the SiC matrix. In the SEM micrographs of the EDM surface, however, these phases are no longer distinct because of thicker recast layer of resolidified-melt-formation droplets present. It is shown that SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites are able to be machined without surface cracking.

  • $ZrB_2$ has a melting temperature of $3245^{\circ}C$ and a low density of $6.1\;g/cm^3$, which makes this a candidate for application to ultra-high temperature over $2000^{\circ}C$. Beside these properties, $ZrB_2$ has excellent resistance to thermal shock and oxidation compared with other non-oxide engineering ceramics. This paper reviewed briefly 2 research examples, which are related to densification and properties of $ZrB_2$-based ceramics for ultra-high temperature applications. In the first section, the effect of $B_4C$ addition on the densification and properties of $ZrB_2$-based ceramics is shown. $ZrB_2$-20 vol.% SiC system was selected as a basic composition and $B_4C$ or C was added to this system in some extents. With sintered bodies, densification behavior and hightemperature (up to $1400^{\circ}C$) properties such as bending strength and hardness are examined. In the second section, the effect of the SiC size on the microstructures and physical properties is shown. $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics are fabricated by using various SiC sources in order to investigate the grain-growth inhibition and the mechanical/thermal properties of $ZrB_2$-SiC.

  • The SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were produced by subjecting a 40:60 vol.% mixture of zirconium diboride($ZrB_2$) powder and ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) matrix to spark plasma sintering(SPS). Sintering was carried out for 60sec at $1400^{\circ}C$ (designation as TP145 and TP146), $1500^{\circ}C$(designation as TP155 and TP156) and uniaxial pressure 50MPa, 60MP under argon atmosphere. The physical, electrical, and mechanical properties of the SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were examined. The relative density of TP145, TP146, TP155 and TP156 were 94.75%, 94.13%, 97.88% and 95.80%, respectively. Reactions between ${\beeta}$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed via x-ray diffraction (hereafter, XRD) analysis. The flexural strength, 306.23MPa of TP156 was higher than that, 279.42MPa of TP146 at room temperature, but lower than that, 392.30MPa of TP155. The properties of a SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites through SPS under argon atmosphere were positive temperature coefficient resistance (hereafter, PTCR) in the range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivities of TP145, TP146, TP155 and TP156 were $6.75{\times}10^{-4}$, $7.22{\times}10^{-4}$, $6.17{\times}10^{-4}$ and $6.71{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The densification of a SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite through hot pressing depend on the sintering temperature and pressure. However, it is convinced that the densification of a SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite do not depend on sintering pressure under SPS.

  • Conductive SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were produced by subjecting a 40:60 (vol%) mixture of zirconium diboride (ZrB2) powder and ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) matrix to spark plasma sintering (SPS). Sintering was carried out for 5 min in an argon atmosphere at a uniaxial pressure and temperature of 50 MPa and $1500^{\circ}C$, respectively. The composite sintered at a heating speed of $25^{\circ}C$/min and an on/off pulse sequence of 12:2 was denoted as SZ12L. Composites SZ12H, SZ48H, and SZ10H were obtained by sintering at a heating speed of $100^{\circ}C$/min and at on/off pulse sequences of 12:2, 48:8, and 10:9, respectively. The physical, electrical, and mechanical properties of the SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were examined and thermal image analysis of the composites was performed. The apparent porosities of SZ12L, SZ12H, SZ48H, and SZ10H were 13.35%, 0.60%, 12.28%, and 9.75%, respectively. At room temperature, SZ12L had the lowest flexural strength (286.90 MPa), whereas SZ12H had the highest flexural strength (1011.34 MPa). Between room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$, the SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites had a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) and linear V-I characteristics. SZ12H had the lowest PTCR and highest electrical resistivity among all the composites. The optimum SPS conditions for the production of energy-friendly SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites are as follows: 1) an argon atmosphere, 2) a constant pressure of 50 MPa throughout the sintering process, 3) an on/off pulse sequence of 12:2 (pulse duration: 2.78 ms), and 4) a final sintering temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$ at a speed of $100^{\circ}C$/min and sintering for 5 min at $1500^{\circ}C$.
