  • In order to explain the positive catalytic action of copper compound for the rate of leaching of zinc sulfide minerals, the electrode and redox potentials of both synthetic and natural sulfides were measured at various conditions of temperatures and pressures. The potentials of Chalcopyrite and copper sulfide were considerably higher than that of zinc sulfide, whereas lead sulfide and Galena had slightly lower potentials than that of zinc sulfide. At elevated temperatures and pressures, the same tendency was obtained. By means of comparing the calculated and measured values of potentials for sulfides, it was suggested that the electrode potentials in acid solution were generated by oxidation of sulfur ion. As a result, it was concluded that the catalytic action of copper compound in the leaching of synthetic zinc sulfide should be arised from the galvanic action between sulfides keeping intimate contact one another in which copper sulfide worked as cathodic and zinc sulfide as anodic part analogous to the metal corrosion under galvanic action.

  • It is very important to investigate the sanitary chemical conditions of farmwaters used for cattle breeding in the dairy farms. For this purpose we examined pH, KMnO4 consumption, total hardness, chloride, sulfate, NH3-N, NO3-N, fluoride, lead, iron, manganese, cadmium, copper, zinc and chrome in the farmwaters sampled 2 times(spring and summer)in Choongcheongnam and Kangwon Province. The pH of farmwaters in Choongcheongnam and Kangwon Province was 6.49$\pm$0.09, 6.70$\pm$0.06, total hardness 90.21$\pm$7.07, 64.53$\pm$6.38 mg/ι, consumption of KMnO4 4.13$\pm$0.62, 4.34$\pm$0.26mg/ι, NO3-N 6.51$\pm$0.55, 3.61$\pm$0.58 mg/ι, chloride ion 20.51$\pm$1.99, 5.41$\pm$1.36 mg/ι and sulfate ion 6.61$\pm$1.02, 7.28$\pm$1.30 mg/ι, respectively. But NH3-N was scarcely detected. Fluoride, iron, lead, cadmium, zinc, manganese and chrome were not detected from the tested farmwaters. There was high significance between each other in total hardness, NO3-N, chloride ion and sulfate ion. There was regional and seasonal significance in only NO3-N but only regional significance in total hardness and chloride ion.

  • Components of zinc-air battery and their problems are explained. Energy density of zinc air battery is superior to other commercial ones including Li-ion batteries. Cycle life of the zinc air batteries is poor because of irreversible redox reactions on both electrodes. In order to improve the performance of the zinc air battery, catalysts, passivation, and the new structure of electrodes should be developed to optimize several reactions in an electrode. Multidisciplinary efforts, such as mechanics, corrosion science, composite materials are necessary from the beginning of the research to obtain a meaningful product.

  • A study has been made for the electrochemical destruction of cyanide ions and removal of zinc ions from a simulated electroplating wastewater by the use of a platinum platized-titanium anode and a stainless steel cathode. Several experimental parameters, including electrolysis time, cell current, additives, and chloride concentration, have been investigated and used for efficient destruction of cyanide waste and removal of zinc ions from aqueous solutions. It was found that cell current and type of additives gave great effects on the destruction of cyanide ions and removal of zinc ions. The optimized conditions (electrolysis time: 1hr, current: 12A, additive: 0.5 M NaCl) have been defined to destroy cyanide ions and remove zinc ions with high efficiency and low operation cost. The proper reaction mechanism leading to the destruction of cyanide on the anode has also been discussed.

  • Heavy metal removal study is conducted from synthetic waste water by reduction and oxidation(redox) reaction of Cu-Zn metal alloy and adsorption reaction of aluminium silicate. Heavy metal whose ionization tendency is smaller than zinc are reducted in an aqueous solution, and the concentration of ionized zinc is reduced by adsorption reaction. The average diameter of metal alloy micro fiber is about $200{\mu}m$, and the surface area is wide enough to get equilibrium in a single cycle treatment. A single cycle treatment of redox reaction of Cu-Zn metal alloy, could remove 100.0 % of Cr(III), 98.0 % of Hg, 92.0 % of Sn and 91.4 % of Cu respectively. An ionization tendency of chromium is very close to zinc, but removal efficiency of chromium by redox reaction is significant. This result shows that trivalent chromium ion is expected to generate hydroxide precipitation with $OH^-$ ion generated by redox reaction. Zinc ion generated by redox reaction is readily removed by adsorption reaction of aluminium silicate in a single cycle treatment. Other heavy metal components which are not perfectly removed by redox reaction also showed very high removal efficiency of 98.0 % or more by adsorption reaction. Aluminium ion is not increased by adsorption reaction of aluminium silicate. That means heavy metal ion removal mechanism by adsorption reaction is turned out to be not an ion exchange reaction, but an adsorption reaction.

  • The characterization of Zinc diffusion processes applied fur high-speed avalanche photodiodes has been examined. The different diffusion process conditions for InP test structures were explored. The Zinc diffusion profiles, such as the diffusion depth and the Zinc dopant concentration, were examined using secondary ion mass spectrometry with varying the process variables and material parameters. It is observed that the diffusion profiles are severely impacted on the process parameters, such as the amount of Zn$_3$P$_2$source and the diffusion time, as well as material parameters, such as doping concentration of diffusion layer. These results can be utilized for the high-speed avalanche photodiode fabrication.

  • Cyclic voltammetry has been applied in the basic studies for the treatment and recovery of heavy metal component contained in wastewater by electrochemical reduction. The electrochemical behaviors of zinc ion for zinc metal electrode and carbon elec-trode were characterized by voltammograms and it was showed that zinc ions were reduced to metallic form below -0.76 V vs SHE. The change in the features of crystalline form of metallic zinc upon oxidation and reduction reaction was observed by X-ray diffraction method and the Am analysis verified that zinc ions were reduced to metal on copper plate. The results of this study were regarded to be important and meaningful in the treatment of heavy metal containing wastewater and, as a result, in the obtainment of metallic product by electrochemical method.

  • Migration and interaction of multi-protons in a zinc-doped barium zirconate (Zn-doped $BaZrO_3$) super cell were investigated using a density functional theory. O ions in the super cell form interconnected octahedrons with Zr or Zn ions positioned in their centers and Ba ions positioned among the eight octahedrons. When one proton was added to the super cell, the energy barrier of 0.80 eV for proton transfer from the first to second nearest O ion sites from the Zn ion reached its highest value. When two protons were added to the super cell, the two protons preferred the first nearest O ions from the Zn ion. The two protons were accommodated by pushing the neighboring Zn ion further away from the center of the octahedron. Energy barriers for proton transfer from the Zn-octahedron to the neighboring Zr-octahedron were spread in the range of 0.36 ~ 1.02 eV.

  • In this paper, we report the coordination state and structure of $Zn(cyclam)Cl_{2})$ complex that was studied by the Raman spectrum and conductivity method. The complex of zinc(II) ion with 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane(cyclam) ligand is formed in aqueous solution. According to the Raman spectrum of $Zn(cyclam)Cl_{2})$ complex, $H_{2}O$ molecule and $Cl^{-}$ ion compete for the trans coordination site of zinc(II) ion. We also have investigated the competition effect of $H_{2}O$ molecule and $Cl^{-}$ ion by the conductivity method. On addition of 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane(cyclam) ligand to the aqueous $ZnCl_{2}$ solution, 2: 1 electrolyte is changed to 1:1 electrolyte. We suggest the possibility of elimination of heavy metal because of the affinity effect of macrocyclic polyamine(1,4,8.11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) for the heavy metal,.

  • The L-Valinate anion coordinating zinc complex, [$Zn(val)_2(H-2O)$], was isolated and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystal possess orthorhombic symmetry with a space group $P2_12_12_1$, Z = 4, and a = 7.4279(2)$\AA$, b = 9.4342(2)$\AA$, c =20.5862(7)$\AA$ respectively. The compound features a penta-coordinate zinc ion in which the two valine anion molecules are directly coordinating the central zinc metal ion via their N (amine) and O (carboxylate) atoms, and an additional coordination to zinc is made by water molecule (solvent) to form a distorted square pyramidal structure. In addition, further synthesis of the valine capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystal from the reaction of [$Zn(val)_2(H-2O)$] precursor with $Na_2S$ and 1.95 weight % of $Mn^{2+}$ dopant is described. Obtained valine capped nanocrystal was water dispersible and was optically characterized by UV-vis and solution PL spectroscopy. The solution PL spectrum for the valine capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystal showed an excitation peak at 280 nm and a very narrow emission peak at 558 nm respectively. The measured and calculated PL efficiency of the nanocrystal in water was 15.8%. The obtained powders were characterized by XRD, HR-TEM, and EDXS analyses. The particle size of the nanocrystal was also measured via a TEM image. The measured average particle size was 3.3 nm.
