Zinc white is mainly used as a mild astringent, protectant. and has weak antiseptic action. It is well known that the yield of zinc white produced is greatly affected by the syn thetic conditions such as the reactant concentration, reaction temperature, washing water temperature, mole ratio of reactants, and drying temperature, calcination temperature, etc. The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal synthesis conditions of zinc white produced. A randomized complete block design suggested by G.E.P. Box and K.B. Wilson was applied for this purpose. Basic zinc carbonate was prepared by reacting zinc sulfate and sod. carbonate solution in this study. Zinc white comes when prepared by calcination of basic zinc carbonate. The optimum synthesis conditions of zinc white obtained from this study is as follows: 1) The reacting temperature range is: 92-100$^{\circ}C$, 2) The concentration of reactant solution is 23.6-27%, 3) The optimum mole-ratio: [ZnSO4]/[Na2CO3] is 1.74~1.96, 4) The washing water temperature is 36$^{\circ}C$, 5) The drying temperature range is 68-74$^{\circ}C$, 6) The calcination temperature is 600$^{\circ}C$. The outcome of DSC indicated a desolvation of basic zinc carbonate occurred at about 133.3$^{\circ}C$. The dehydration of the compound ceased at about 267.9$^{\circ}C$ and the decarboxylation ceased at about 379.9$^{\circ}C$. The physical and chemical properties of zinc white as medicine were studied by use of Volume Test.

To investigate the pigments used in modern and contemporary oil paintings, thirty-two paintings by Jiho Oh and Bonung Gu were selected. The white pigment found in the ground and painting layers was identified as lead white (hydrocerussite), zinc white (zinc oxide), titanium white (titanium dioxide in anatase or rutile forms), calcite (calcium carbonate), and barite (barium sulfate). Further, this indicated that pigments differ according to the artist and date of the painting's creation. However, both Oh and Gu used zinc white during the modern and contemporary period, while lead white was replaced by titanium white, barite and calcite. Compared with the overseas studies on pigments and oil paints, the change patterns of pigments were the same with them but the periods of the use were partially different. It seems to be due to the fact that South Korea is linked to the historical background of the art material which was imported from Japan instead of Western countries. Therefore, it is inevitable that any change in the white pigments used for domestic oil paintings occurred at a different time from global transitions. If the results of this study are used in the analysis of art works it is suggested that a database recording such aspects as material properties of oil paints, artistic techniques, and chronology would become important for future conservation science and the study of art history.
Decay and mold resistance of zinc borate (ZB) and calcium borate (CB) modified oriented strandboard (OSB) from southern mixed hardwood and southern yellow pine was investigated in this study. Brown rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum and white-rot fungus Trametes versicolar were used to examine the decay resistance of the OSB. The OSB test specimens were colonized by brown and white rot fungal mycelium in both the brown and white-rot culture bottles after 8 and 12 weeks, respectively. The wood species and fungus type had the significant effects on the decay resistance. Brown rot decay was evident for all untreated southern pine and mixed hardwood controls. The white-rot decay, however, did not show significant weight loss at both species control samples. The incorporation of ZB and CB composites provides suitable protection against brown-and white-rot fungi. No significant weight loss was observed from the borate treated OSB.
Painting is well regarded as a stratified structure by the conservators and restorers. Hence, the scientific methods have been developed for the study of the interal layer of paintings. Examples of such methods are X-ray, infra-red, and ultra-violet photography. A more direct method is to look at the painting in cross section under the microscope and to analyze pigments using an electron probe X-ray micro analyzer(EPMA).In this research, I study and analyze twenty two Korean paintings of self-portraits including the first oil painting of Hui Dong Koh's self-portrait stored in the museum of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, employing these scientific techniques. The small fragments taken from the ground layers of the early oil paintings(1915∼1942)are analyzed using the EPMA. According to their main materials, the ground layers can be classified into five types ; 1. Lead white layer and double layer of calcium carbonate and lead white, 2. Zinc white with some mixiture of lead white, 3.Titanium white with some barium white, 4. Barium white, 5.Double layer of titanium white and zinc white.
Nine newly isolated mushroom strains were tested to assess both their zinc tolerance and potential for zinc removal from an aqueous solution. Four strains of ectomycorrhizal fungi, namely Clavariadelphus truncatus (T 192), Rhizopogon roseolus (T 21), Lepista nuda (T 373), and Tricholoma equestre (T 174), along with five strains of white rot fungi, Lenzites betulina (S 2), Trametes hirsuta (T 587), Ganoderma spp. (T 99), Polyporus arcularius (T 438), and Ganoderma carnosum (M 88), were investigated using zinc-amended solid and liquid media. Their biosorption properties were also determined. The colony diameter and dry weight were used as tolerance indices for fungal growth. C. truncatus and T. equestre were not strongly inhibited at the highest concentrations of (225 mg/l) zinc in solid media. The most tolerant four strains with solid media, C. truncatus, G carnosum, T. hirsuta, and T. equestre, were then chosen for tolerance tests in liquid media. An ectomycorrhizal strain, C. truncatus, was also detected as the most tolerant strain in liquid media. However, the metal-tolerant strains demonstrated weak activity in the biosorption studies. In contrast, the highest biosorption activity was presented by a more sensitive strain, G. carnosum. In addition, seven different biosorbent types from G. carnosum (M 88) were compared for their Zn (II) biosorption in batch experiments.
A zinc-specific method (selenium method) has been employed to identify the zinc-containing cells in the cerebellum of the rats. When rats were allowed to survive 24 hours after the sodium selenite administration, zinc selenide reaction products formed in zinc-containing cellular boutons are retrogradely transported to the somata of those boutons. And the zinc selenide products accumulated in somata of the cells can be rendered visible by silver amplification of developer. Zinc-containing cells identified by the method were Bergmann glial and granule cells. Labeled zinc-containing cells were absent in molecular layer and white matter of the cerebellum. In ultrastructural level, the zinc selenide products were located in lysosomes of somata of the zinc-containing cells.
The study investigates the effects of a body that influences the nucleation and growth of crystal by experiment the application of zinc crystalline glaze to five of the most favorably used kinds of bodies sold in the market. As a result, in all bodies used in the test, willemite crystal is appeared on the surface and in the case of white porcelain, super white and white porcelain sculpture clay, beautiful crystals is developed. The reason that crystal does not grow and trickle down by sticking to the body in celadon clay and Sanchung clay is the large surface tension of glaze by ingredient CaO which is more often present compared to other bodies. In glaze, the ingredients $Al_2O_3$ and RO greatly influences the surface tension, and adhesion of the glaze and the body is completed by the glaze's power to stick, which is determined by the reaction of both the glaze and the body. However, in the case of Sanchung clay, the CaO in body reacts to the glaze, and glaze, on Sanchung clay, has tendency to run more compared with other bodies. It is supposed that this mechanism influences the growth of willemite crystal and the glaze's adhesion to the body.
Canine dermatosis associated with zinc deficiency naturally occurred in three districts of Kyungpook. A diagnosis was made by clinical findings, clinico-pathological examinations, skin biopsy, and therapeutic tests. The result was diagnosed as a zinc-deficient dermatosis. The disease occurred in rapidly growing Tosa-dog hybrids 5 to 7 months old. Skin lesions included erytherma, alopecia, crusting, scaling around the mouth, eyes, legs and tail. Clinico-pathological findings were decreased serum zinc levels, slightly increased white blood cells, and secondary Staphylococcus intermedius infection of the crusts. The skin biopsies for histopathological examination revealed marked parakeratotic hyperkeratosis. The patients with skin lesions were successfully treated by zinc methonine(Zinpro) medication In conclusion, serum zinc level and skin biopsy are very helpful in diagnosis of canine zinc-deficient dermatosis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of zinc intake on immune responses in high fat diet induced obese rats. The immune status was assessed by the measurements of immunoglobulins (IgG, A, and M) production by SRBC(sheep red blood cell) with mitogen in vivo. The delayed type hypersensitivity(DTH) response was also measured as an index of cell mediated immunity. The re sults are summarized as follows : 1) There were no significant differences in the feed intake, weight gain and feed efficiency ratio of obese rats by the different dietary zinc levels. 2) White blood cell (WBC) counts were significantly affected as the dietary zinc levels decreased. The capacity of Ig M production in obese rats was significantly higher in normal zinc group than that of low and high zinc group. Cell mediated immune response evaluated by means of DTH testing has also been found to be highly impaired by zinc deficiency and overload. From these observations, it was suggested that adequate levels of zinc may promote the immune function of obese individuals. The relationship and its functional role of the zinc in obesity remains to be further studied.

Phosphating treatments have been performed to improve paint adhesion and corrosion resistance of zinc and zinc alloy coated steels for a long time. In this work, the effects of the addition of chelate compound were studied to improve the stability of surface conditioning solution and properties of zinc phosphate films. The coalescence of colloidal Ti-compound and extraneous charged particles (alkaliearth metal cation such as $Mg^{2+}$ , $Ca^{2+}$ ) were suppressed by using a surface conditioning solution with chelate compound. Therefore, after surface conditioning solution containing chelate compound was left standing for one week at room temperature, the formation of a white sediment was decreased comparing to surface conditioning solution without chelate compound. The crystal size of phosphate film was fine and the whiteness value of phosphated zinc coated steel sheets was also high without the decrease of corrosion resistance and anti-patina. It was very effective to use chelate compound improving the stability of surface conditioning solution.
