  • It is interesting to introduce viologen moiety into photoactive compounds such as porphyrin and anthracene in the study of supramolecular system such as pseudorotaxanes. For the construction of photoactive pseudorotaxane based on porphyrin-viologen-anthracene triad or its zinc derivative threaded with bis-p-phenylene-34-crown-10 macrocycle, porphyrin-viologen-anthracene triad 1 and its zinc derivative zinc porphyrin-viologen-anthracene triad 2 were prepared and their absorption and fluorescence spectral properties were measured.

  • We modify ZnO nanorods with Zn-porphyrin to obtain the improved characteristics of energy transfer, which is further investigated for the applicability to photovoltaic devices. A nitrogen heterocyclic ligand containing a thiol group is covalently grafted onto the surface of finely structured ZnO nanorods with a length of 50-250 nm and a diameter of 15-20 nm. Zn-porphyrin is then attached to the ligand molecules by the mechanism of metalligand axial coordination. The resulting energy band diagram suggests that the porphyrin-modified ZnO nanorods might provide an efficient pathway for energy transfer upon being applied to photovoltaic devices.

  • An efficient three-component one-step synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles by condensation reaction of 1,2-diketones or ${\alpha}$-hydroxyketones with aromatic aldehydes and ammonium acetate using Zinc (II) [tetra (4-methylphenyl)] porphyrin as a novel and reusable catalyst under ultrasound irradiation at ambient temperature is described. In this method, ${\alpha}$-hydroxyketones as well as 1,2-diketones were converted to their corresponding 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles in excellent yields.

  • Benzyl arylether dendrimers with zinc porphyrin core and terminal vinyl groups have been synthesized and their photophysical properties and the influence of dendritic environments were investigated. Free base porphyrin-cored benzyl arylether dendrimers 1a-1c and 3a-3c, and their zinc derivatives 2a-2c and 4a-4c have been prepared. Absorption spectra are similar for all porphyrin-cored benzyl arylether dendrimers, except that absorption intensity at 280 nm increases in the higher generation of dendrimer. Fluorescence spectra are similar with two bands for all free base porphyrin dendrimers 1a-1c and 3a-3c, although fluorescence intensity ratio of shorter wavelength emission band to longer wavelength band varies with the generation of dendrimer. Emission efficiencies of 1a-1c and 3a-3c are lower than that of TTP. Emission efficiencies of 2a-2c and 4a-4c are higher than that of ZnTTP. Absorption and emission properties of 1a-1c, 2a-2c, 3a-3c, and 4a-4c were affected negligibly with dendritic environments.

  • Noncovalently linked electron donor-acceptor dyad consisting of zinc tetratolylporphyrin and pyridine appended ruthenium trisbipyridine comlex was prepared, via axial coordination of pyridine moiety in ruthenium trisbipyridine complex on zinc tetratolylporphyrin. For the purpose of comparison, axial coordination of pyridine-appended 2,2'-bipyridine on zinc tetratolylporphyrin was also investigated. The Kvalues were detemined based on absorption of fluorescence studies. The fluorescence of zinc teratolylporphrin was efficiently quenched upon axial coordination of pyridine moiety, prbably due to the photoinduced electron transfer from zinc tetrtolylporphyrin to ruthenium trisbipyridine, supported by free enegy estimation.

  • A porphyrin compound containing a crown ether moiety (Por-Crown) and its zinc complex (ZnPor-Crown) have been prepared and the effect of the addition of alkali metal on their fluorescence has been investigated. As alkali metal cations were added, the absorption and fluorescence maxima did not change. However, the absorbance and intensity of fluorescence increased dramatically. Among the alkali metal cations tested, addition of K$^{+}$ and Cs$^{+}$ showed strongest enhancement of absorbance and fluorescence intensity of Por-Crown and ZnPor-Crown.own.

  • The synthesis and excited-state dynamics are described for a tetrad (ZC - ZP - ZP - I) consisting of zinc chlorin (ZC), zinc porphyrin (ZP), zinc porphyrin (ZP), and pyromellitimide (I), which upon photoexcitation provides a fully charge-separated state (ZC$^+$- P - ZP - l$^- $) with lifetimes of 230 $\mu$s in THF and > 50$ \mu$s in DMF at room temperature via a stepwise electron-transfer relay that has been detected by the ps-time resolved transient absorption spectroscopy.
