The self-discharge behavior of zinc-air batteries is a critical issue induced by corrosion and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of zinc anode. The corrosion reaction and HER can be controlled by a gelling agent and concentration of potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Various concentrations of KOH solution and polyacrylic acid have been used for gel electrolyte. The electrolyte solution is prepared with different concentrations of KOH (6 M, 7 M, 8 M, 9 M). Among studied materials, the cell assembled with 6 M KOH gel electrolyte exhibits the highest specific discharge capacity and poor capacity retention. Whereas, 9 M KOH gel electrolyte shows high capacity retention. However, a large amount of hydrogen gas is evolved with 9 M KOH solution. In general, the increase in concentration is related to ionic conductivity. At concentrations above 7 M, the viscosity increases and the conductivity decreases. As a result, compared to other studied materials, 7 M KOH gel electrolyte is suitable for Zn-air batteries because of its higher capacity retention (92.00 %) and specific discharge capacity (351.80 mAh/g) after 6 hr storage.
The electrochemical performance for the corrosion of zinc anodes according to particle size and shape as anode in Zn/air batteries was study. We prepared five samples of Zn powder with different particle size and morphology. For analysis the particle size of theme, we measured particle size analysis (PSA). As the result, sample (e) had smaller particle size with $10.334{\mu}m$ than others. For measuring the electrochemical performance of them, we measured the cyclic voltammetry and linear polarization in three electrode system (half-cell). For measuring the morphology change of them before and after cyclic voltammetry, we measured Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM). From the cyclic voltammetry, as the zinc powder had small size, we knew that it had large diffusion coefficient. From the linear polarization, as the zinc powder had small size, it was a good state with high polarization resistance as anode in Zn/air batteries. From the SEM images, the particle size had increased due to the dendrite formation after cyclic voltammetry. Therefore, the sample (e) with small size would have the best electrochemical performance between these samples.
To solve low cycle efficiency of the zinc anode in Zn-air batteries by corrosion, this study examined the effects of Al as a cathodic protection additive to Zn. The Al-mixed Zn anodes were produced by mixing Zn and Al powder (1, 2, and 3 wt. %). To compare the effects of the Al additive, Si was selected under the same conditions. The morphology and elemental composition of the additives in the Zn were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry. The anti-corrosion effects of the Al and Si-mixed Zn anodes were examined by linear polarization. Cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge tests were conducted to evaluate the electrochemical performance of the Al and Si-mixed Zn anodes. As a result, the Al-mixed Zn anodes showed highest corrosion resistance and cycling performance. Among these, the 2 wt.% Al-mixed Zn anodes exhibited best electrochemical performance.
We synthesized nano-sized $La_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_3$ ($x=0.1{\sim}0.4$) cathode catalyst for the zinc air secondary batteries by citrate method, And we measured the cathode's electrochemical characteristics according to content of strontium compose the cathode catalyst. We controlled the pH of precursor solution by 10 in the process of manufacturing the precursor, We heat treated the prepared precursor at various calcination temperature ($500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$), and examined the optimum calcinations temperature by XRD analysis and electrochemical evaluation. We examined the ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) and OER (oxygen evolution reaction) performance of the prepared $La_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_3$ catalyst powder. When we consider ORR and OER performance simultaneously, $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}CoO_3$ catalyst has shown the best performance because of its lowest voltage deference between charge and discharge.
The voltage profile of Zinc/Air battery during discharge has very flat pattern in a given voltage range, But, if not enough the porosity in cathode, as a result of that capacity, energy and discharge voltage of batteries become low. Therefore, we focused the pore effects in activated carbon for cathode. We examined discharge voltage, specific capacity, specific energy, resistance and characteristics during the GSM pulse discharge upon different kinds of activated carbon in Zinc/Air battery, Also we measured porosity of the air cathode according to the ASTM. So we achieved improvement of specific capacity, specific energy and discharge voltage according to increase meso pores of activated carbon. We found the optimized activated carbon material for Zinc/Air battery.
Energy storage/conversion has become crucial not only to meet the present energy demand but also more importantly to sustain the modern society. Particularly, electrical energy storage is critical not only to support electronic, vehicular and load-levelling applications but also to efficiently commercialize renewable energy resources such as solar and wind. While Li-ion batteries are being intensely researched for electric vehicle applications, there is a pressing need to seek for new battery chemistries aimed at stationary storage systems. In this aspect, Zn-ion batteries offer a viable option to be utilized for high energy and power density applications since every intercalated Zn-ion yields a concurrent charge transfer of two electrons and thereby high theoretical capacities can be realized. Furthermore, the simplicity of fabrication under open-air conditions combined with the abundant and less toxic zinc element makes aqueous Zn-ion batteries one of the most economical, safe and green energy storage technologies with prospective use for stationary grid storage applications. Also, Zn-ion batteries are very safe for next-generation technologies based on flexible, roll-up, wearable implantable devices the portable electronics market. Following this advantages, a wide range of approaches and materials, namely, cathodes, anodes and electrolytes have been investigated for Zn-ion batteries applications to date. Herein, we review the progresses and major advancements related to aqueous. Zn-ion batteries, facilitating energy storage/conversion via $Zn^{2+}$ (de)intercalation mechanism.
The voltage profile during discharge of the zinc air battery has very flat pattern until reach to end of discharge voltage. But, when zinc air battery is discharged by high current, the discharge voltage and energy becomes low. Therefore, we focused on effects of catalyst size to solve this problems by increasing active sites of oxygen reduction reaction. The size of catalyst was reduced from 27 to l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and we examined average discharge voltage, capacity, energy, resistance and characteristics during GSM pulse discharge of zinc air battery with change of current density. And we also measured porosity of the cathode according to the ASTM. So we have got improvement of average discharge voltage and energy when catalyst was minimized and we have got optimum size of catalyst at 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
Lithium accounts for only 0.0017% of the earth crust, and it is produced in geographically limited regions such as South America, the United States, and China. Since the first half of 2017, the price of lithium has been continuously increasing, and with the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, lithium resources are expected to be depleted in the near future. In addition, economic blocs worldwide face intensifying scenarios such as competition for technological supremacy and protectionism of domestic industries. Consequently, Korea is deepening its dependence on China for core materials and is vulnerable to the influence of the United States Inflation Reduction Act. We analyze post-lithium secondary battery technologies that rely on more earth-abundant elements to replace lithium, whose production is limited to specific regions. Specifically, we focus on the technological status and issues of sodium-ion, zinc-air, and redox-flow batteries. In addition, research trends in post-lithium secondary batteries are examined. Post-lithium secondary batteries seem promising for large-capacity energy storage systems while reducing the costs of raw materials compared with existing lithium-based technologies.
