We have established a wind map of Singapore, a city-state characterized its land cover by urban buildings to confirm a possibility of wind farm development. As a simple but useful approximation of urban canopy, a zero-plane displacement concept was employed. The territory is divided into 15 sectors having similar urban building layouts, and zero-plane displacement, equivalent roughness height at each sector was calculated to setup a terrain boundary condition. Annual mean wind speed and mean wind power density map were drawn by a CFD micrositing model, WindSim where Changi International Airport wind data was used as an in-situ measurement. Unfortunately, predicted wind power density does not exceed 80 $W/m^2$ at 50 m above ground level which would not sufficient for wind power generation. However, the established Singapore wind map is expected to be applied for wind environment assessment and urban planning purpose.
The non-rational transfer function of a Bernoulli-Euler beam, as an important component of a flexible structure, is analyzed. The true pattern of zeros of that transfer function is investigated as a function of sensor and actuator seperation. Translational displacement sensors are used for two cases in which a force input and a moment input are seperately applied. When the displacement sensor is located at a certain point, the first pair of zeros on the real axis of the s-plane arrive at the origin and cancel the rigid-body mode. The location of the translational displacement sensors on the beamat which the rigid-body mode of the beam is unobservable is analyzed as the center of percussion and is uniquely located for each case. If sensor is moved beyond such a point, a pair of zeros appear on the imaginary axis and move away from the origin along the imaginary axis of the s-plane.
The focus of this study is on the problem of the design of structure of undetermined topology. This problem has been regarded as being the most challenging of structural optimization problems, because of the difficulty of allowing topology to change. Conventional approaches break down when element sizes approach to zero, due to stiffness matrix singularity. In this study, a novel nonlinear Programming formulation of the topology Problem is developed and examined. Its main feature is the ability to account for topology variation through zero element sizes. Stiffness matrix singularity is avoided by embedding the equilibrium equations as equality constraints in the optimization problem. Although the formulation is general, two dimensional plane elasticity examples are presented. The design problem is to find minimum weight of a plane structure of fixed geometry but variable topology, subject to constraints on stress and displacement. Variables are thicknesses of finite elements, and are permitted to assume zero sizes. The examples demonstrate that the formulation is effective for finding at least a locally minimal weight.
A semi-infinite parallel crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strip under anti-plane clamped displacement is analyzed. Using Fourier integral transform a Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving this equation the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are determined, where the results give the more general expression applicable to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the parallel crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor and energy release rate are also obtained as a closed form, which are the results applicable to the problem both of dynamic and static crack under the same geometry as this study. The stress intensity factor approaches zero at the critical crack velocity which is less than the shear wave velocity, but in typical case of isotropic or orthotropic material agrees with the velocity of shear wave. Also a circular shear stress around crack tip is considered, from which the stress is shown to be approximately symmetric about the horizontal axis. Referring to the maximum stress criteria, it could be shown that a brenched crack is formed by crack growth as crack velocity increases.
Stress and displacement fields for a crack propagating along interface between isotropic material and functionally gradient one with linear property gradation along X direction are developed. The stress and displacement fields are obtained from the complex function of steady plane motion for isotropic and functionally gradient material (FGM). The stresses and displacement in isotropic material of bimaterial are not influenced by nonhomogeneity, however, the fields in FCM are influenced by nonhomogeneity in the terms of higher order, n$\geq$3. When the nonhomogeneous parameter in FGM is zero, or in area close to crack tip, the fields are identical to those of isotropic-isotropic bimaterial. Using these stress components, the effects of nonhomogeneity on stresses are discussed.
A semi-infinite interfacial crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strip under out-of-plane clamped displacements is analyzed. The asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are obtained, where the results get more general expressions applicable not only to isotropic/orthotropic materials but also to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the interfacial crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor is obtained as a closed form, which is decreased as the velocity of crack propagation increases. The critical velocity where the stress intensity factor comes to zero is obtained, which agrees with the lower value between the critical values of parallel crack merged in the material 1 and 2 adjacent to the interface. The dynamic energy release rate is also obtained as a form related to the stress intensity factor.
In this study, the supersonic panel flutter of doubly curved composite sandwich panels with variable thickness is considered under aerothermoelastic loading. Considering different radii of curvatures of the face sheets in this paper, the thickness of the core is a function of plane coordinates (x,y), which is unique. For the first time in the current model, the continuity conditions of the transverse shear stress, transverse normal stress and transverse normal stress gradient at the layer interfaces, as well as the conditions of zero transverse shear stresses on the upper and lower surfaces of the sandwich panel are satisfied. The formulation is based on an enhanced higher order sandwich panel theory and the vertical displacement component of the face sheets is assumed as a quadratic one, while a cubic pattern is used for the in-plane displacement components of the face sheets and the all displacement components of the core. The formulation is based on the von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ nonlinear approximation, the one-dimensional Fourier equation of the heat conduction along the thickness direction, and the first-order piston theory. The equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived using the Hamilton principle and the results are validated by the latest results published in the literature.
A parallel crack in bonded dissimilar orthotropic planes under out-of-plane loading is analyzed. The problem is formulated by Fourier integral transforms, and reduced to a pair of dual integral equations. By solving the integral equations, the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are determined in closed form, from which the stress intensity factor and energy release rate are obtained. Discontinuity in the stress intensity factor as the distance ratio h/a of the parallel crack approaches zero is found, while the energy releas rate is shown to be continuous at h/a = 0. This information can immediately be used to generate the stress intensity factor for the parallel crack near the interface. By employing "the maximum energy release rate criterion", it could be shown in the case of no existing crack initially that the parallel crack is formed far from the interface for the more compliant material, while it is formed close to the interface for the stiffer material. material.
The propagating crack problems under dynamic plane mode in orthotropic material is studied in this paper. To analyze the dynamic fracture problems in orthortropic material, it is important to know the dynamic stress components and dynamic displacement components around the crack tip. Therefore the dynamic stress components of dynamic stress field and dynamic displacement components of dynamic displacement field in the crack tip of orthotropic material under the dynamic load and the steady state in crack propagation were derived. When the crack propagation speed approachs to zero, the dynamic stress component and dynamic displacement components derived in this study are identical to the those of static state. In addition, the relationships between dynamic stress intensity factor and dynamic energy release rate are determinded by using the concept of crack closure closure energy with the dynamic stresses and represented according to physical properties of the orthotrophic material and crack speeds. The faster the crack velocity, the greater the stress value of stress components in crack tip. The stress value of the stress component of crack tip is greater when fiber direction coincides with the crack propagation than when fider direction is normal to the crack propagation.
