  • The 2008 Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku earthquake ($M_w$ 6.9, $M_{jma}$ 7.2) occurred on 14 June 2008 in Japan. The amplification and asymmetric waveform of the vertical acceleration at the ground surface recorded by accelerometers at station IWTH25, situated 3 km from the source, were remarkable in two ways. First, the vertical acceleration was extremely large (PGA = 38.66 $m/s^2$ for the vertical component, PGA = 42.78 $m/s^2$ for the sum of the three components). Second, an unusual asymmetric waveform, which is too far above the zero acceleration axis, as well as large upward spikes were observed. Using a multidegree-of-freedom (MDF) system consisting of a one-dimensional continuum subjected to vertical acceleration recorded at a depth of 260 m below ground level, the present paper clarifies numerically that these singular phenomena in the surface vertical acceleration records occurred as a result of the jumping and collision of a layer in vertical motion. We herein propose a new mechanism for such jumping and collision of ground layers. The unexpected extensive landslides that occurred in the area around the epicenter are believed to have been produced by such jumping under the influence of vertical acceleration.

  • We present an experimental and numerical study of spectral profiles of effective group indices of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) waveguides and of their chromatic-dispersion effect on the four-wave-mixing (FWM) signal generation. The a-Si:H waveguides of 220-nm thickness and three different widths of 400, 450 and 500 nm were fabricated by using the conventional CMOS device processes on a $2-{\mu}m$ thick $SiO_2$ bottom layer deposited on 8-inch Si wafers. Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) were formed with the a-Si:H waveguides, and used for precise measurement of the effective group indices and thus for determination of the spectral profile of the waveguides' chromatic dispersion. The wavelength ranges for the FWM-signal generation were about 45, 75 and 55 nm for the 400-, 450- and 500-nm-wide waveguides, respectively, at the pump wavelength of 1532 nm. A widest wavelength range for the efficient FWM process was observed with the 450-nm-wide waveguide having a zero-dispersion near the pump wavelength.

  • Micro-sized bumps on a multi-layered build-up PCB were fabricated by pulse-reverse copper electroplating. The values of the current density and brightener content for the electroplating were optimized for suitable performance with maximum efficiency. The micro-bumps thus electroplated were characterized using a range of analytical tools that included an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope, an atomic force microscope and a hydraulic bulge tester. The optical microscope and scanning electron microscope analyses results showed that the uniformity of the electroplating was viable in the current density range of $2-4\;A/dm^2$; however, the uniformity was slightly degraded as the current density increased. To study the effect of the brightener concentration, the concentration was varied from zero to 1.2 ml/L. The optimum concentration for micro-bump electroplating was found to be 0.6 ml/L based on an examination of the electroplating properties, including the roughness, yield strength and grain size.

  • This paper present new scheme for a Side Wall Masked Isolation(SWAMI) technology which take all the advatages provided by conventional LOCOS process. A new SWAMI process incorporates a sloped sidewall by reactive ion etch and a layer of thin nitride around the side walls such that both intrinsic nitride stress and volume expansion induced stress are greatly reduced. As a fabricate results, a defect-free fully recessed zero bird's beak local oxidation process can be realized by the sloped wall anisotropic oxide isolation. No additional masking step is required. The leakage current of PN diodes of this process were reduced than PN diode of conventional LOCOS process. On the other hand, the edge junction part was larger than the flat juction part in the density of leakage current.

  • A low-cost, large area, random, maskless texturing scheme independent of crystal orientation is expected to have significant impact on terrestrial photovoltaic technology. We investigated silicon surface microstructures formed by reactive ion etching (R IE) in Multi-Hollow cathode system. Desirable texturing effect has been achieved when radio-frequency (rf) power of about 20 Watt per one hollow cathode glow is applied for our RF Multi -Hollow cathode system. The black silicon etched surface shows almost zero reflectance in the visible region as well as in near IR region. The etched silicon surface is covered by columnar microstructures with diameters from 50 to 100 nm and depth of about 500 nm. We have successfully achieved 11.7 % efficiency of mono-crystalline silicon solar cell and 10.2 % for multi-crystalline silicon solar cell.

  • This study investigated the results of insulation heat curing method using double layer bubble sheet in slab concrete in cold weather environment. First of all, when double bubble sheets are applied, it was shown that slab concrete was protected from early freezing by remaining between 5 and $l0^{\circ}C$ even in case outside temperature drops $-11^{\circ}C$ below zero until the 4nd day from piling. The insulation heat preservation curing method using the double bubble sheet applied in this field prevented early freezing owing to stable curing temperature management, deterring concrete strength development delay at low temperature, and obtained the needed strength. Also, it was proven that the method is highly effective and economic for cold weather concrete quality maintenance through curing cost reduction like construction period shortening and labor cost reduction, etc by reducing the process of temporary equipment installation and disassembling.

  • When an abnormal condition occurs due to a fault current at a consumer location where electricity is supplied through high-Tc superconducting(HTS) cable, the HTS cable would be damaged if there is no appropriate method to protect it. The fault-current-limiting type HTS cable that is suggested in this study has a structure of transport part and limit part. It conduct a zero impedance transport current at ordinary operations and carry out a fault current limiting at extraordinary operations. To make a perfect this structure, it is essential to investigate electrical properties of transport part that comprise the fault-current-limiting type HTS cable. In this paper, transport part that comprise HTS wire with copper stabilization layer is examined the current transport properties and the stability evaluation.

  • Experimental study on the three-dimensional topology of hairpin packet structures in turbulent boundary layers were carried out. Two different Reynolds number based on momentum thickness, Re$\sub$$\theta$/=514 and 934 were generated in a blowing type wind tunnel under the condition of zero pressure gradient. Simultaneous measurements of velocity fields at a wall-normal plane and wall-parallel plane by a plane PIV and a Stereo-PIV systems. The two Nd:Yag laser systems and three CCD cameras were synchronized to obtain instantaneous velocity fields at the same time. To avoid optical noise at the crossing line by the two laser light sheets, a new optical arrangement using polarization was applied. The obtained velocity fields show the existence of hairpin packet structure vividly and the idealized hairpin vortex signature is confirmed by experiment. Two counter-rotating vortex pair which reflects the cutting plane of hairpin legs are found both side of a strong streaky structure when the wall-normal plane cuts the hairpin head.

  • The apparent soil resistivity is used for estimating multilayer soil parameters, such as, layer's depth and soil resistivity. The apparent soil resistivity can be measured, and also can be calculated if soil parameters are given, becacuse the apparent soil resistivity is a function of these parameters. Therefore, any optimization algorithms can be used to find these parameters which make the calculated apparent soil resistivity close to the measured one. The equation for calculating the apparent soil resistivity is complicated and time consumed, because it is composed of an infinite integral which includes a zero order Bessel's function of the first kind. In this paper, a fast algorithm for calculating the apparent soil resistivity of horizontal multilayer earth structure has been presented using complex image method.
