  • The meaning of zero as a number signifying nothing is introduced as a number 1 less than 1 in the first grade mathematics textbook. In addition, the first appearance of the properties of zero are described by exemplary situations of adding zero, subtracting zero, and multiplying by zero in the first and second grade mathematics textbooks. The meaning and the properties of 0, however, are not explicitly dealt with any longer in the follow-up learning. In this study, we discuss the way of introducing zero and the applications of the properties of zero for solving number sentences so that they could help elementary school students understand the meaning and the properties of zero. Based on these results, we suggest some educational implications on teaching and learning mathematics of zero.

  • Many articles have reported that zero causes children's arithmetic errors. This article was designed to measure the effect of zero on children's arithmetic performances. For this, 222 of 3,4,5,6 graders in elementary school were tested with pencil and paper. The test were categorized into four parts: basic number fact, column subtraction, column multiplication, and column division. These data showed that the negative effect of zero on children's arithmetic was limited to several areas, concretely, multiplication facts with zero, column subtraction with numbers which have two successive zeros, column multiplication with numbers which have zero in a middle position, long division with zeros. But there was no evidence that students could self-control these negative effects of zero as grade went up. It implies that we should keep attention to children's arithmetic performance with zero in some special areas.

  • In this paper, MNIST classification CNN with zero skipping is implemented. Activation of CNN results in 30% to 40% zero. Since 0 does not affect the MAC operation, skipping 0 through a branch can improve performance. However, at the convolution layer, skipping over a branch causes a performance degradation. Accordingly, in the convolution layer, an operation is skipped by giving a NOP that does not affect the operation. Fully connected layer is skipped through the branch. We have seen performance improvements of about 1.5 times that of existing CNN.

  • Let R be a commutative ring with zero-divisors Z(R). The extended zero-divisor graph of R, denoted by $\bar{\Gamma}(R)$, is the (simple) graph with vertices $Z(R)^*=Z(R){\backslash}\{0\}$, the set of nonzero zero-divisors of R, where two distinct nonzero zero-divisors x and y are adjacent whenever there exist two non-negative integers n and m such that $x^ny^m=0$ with $x^n{\neq}0$ and $y^m{\neq}0$. In this paper, we consider the extended zero-divisor graphs of idealizations $R{\ltimes}M$ (where M is an R-module). At first, we distinguish when $\bar{\Gamma}(R{\ltimes}M)$ and the classical zero-divisor graph ${\Gamma}(R{\ltimes}M)$ coincide. Various examples in this context are given. Among other things, the diameter and the girth of $\bar{\Gamma}(R{\ltimes}M)$ are also studied.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to study the zero-divisor properties of the zero-symmetric near-ring of skew formal power series R0[[x; α]], where R is a symmetric, α-compatible and right Noetherian ring. It is shown that if R is reduced, then the set of all zero-divisor elements of R0[[x; α]] forms an ideal of R0[[x; α]] if and only if Z(R) is an ideal of R. Also, if R is a non-reduced ring and annR(a - b) ∩ Nil(R) ≠ 0 for each a, b ∈ Z(R), then Z(R0[[x; α]]) is an ideal of R0[[x; α]]. Moreover, if R is a non-reduced right Noetherian ring and Z(R0[[x; α]]) forms an ideal, then annR(a - b) ∩ Nil(R) ≠ 0 for each a, b ∈ Z(R). Also, it is proved that the only possible diameters of the zero-divisor graph of R0[[x; α]] is 2 and 3.

  • The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is an effective protection device for wind turbine generator based on doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) operated under the unbalanced voltage dip conditions. The compensating voltages of DVR depend on the voltage dips and on the influence of the zero sequence components. If the $Y_0/{\Delta}$ step-up transformers are used, there are no zero sequence components on the DFIG side. However, if the $Y_0/Y_0$ step-up transformers are used, the zero sequence components will appear during faults. The zero sequence components result in the high insulation costs and the asymmetric of the terminal voltages. This paper proposes a method for controlling zero sequence components in DVR to protect DFIG under unbalanced voltage dips. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • Korean income data obtained from Korea Labor Panel Survey shows excessive zeros, which may not be properly explained by the Tobit model. In this paper, we analyze the data using a zero-inflated Tobit model to incorporate excessive zeros. A zero-inflated Tobit model consists of two stages. In the first stage, individuals with 0 income are divided into two groups: genuine zero group and random zero group. Individuals in the genuine zero group did not participate labor market since they have no intention to do so. Individuals in the random zero group participated labor market but their incomes are very low and truncated at 0. In the second stage, the Tobit model is assumed to a subset of data combining random zeros and positive observations. Regression models are employed in both stages to obtain the effect of explanatory variables on the participation of labor market and the income amount. Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are applied for the Bayesian analysis of the data. The proposed zero-inflated Tobit model outperforms the Tobit model in model fit and prediction of zero frequency. The analysis results show strong evidence that the probability of participating in the labor market increases with age, decreases with education, and women tend to have stronger intentions on participating in the labor market than men. There also exists moderate evidence that the probability of participating in the labor market decreases with socio-economic status and reserved wage. However, the amount of monthly wage increases with age and education, and it is larger for married than unmarried and for men than women.

  • Let $\mathcal{M}(S)$ denote the set of all $m{\times}n$ matrices over a semiring S. For $A{\in}\mathcal{M}(S)$, zero-term rank of A is the minimal number of lines (rows or columns) needed to cover all zero entries in A. In [5], the authors obtained that a linear operator on $\mathcal{M}(S)$ preserves zero-term rank if and only if it preserves zero-term ranks 0 and 1. In this paper, we obtain new characterizations of linear operators on $\mathcal{M}(S)$ that preserve zero-term rank. Consequently we obtain that a linear operator on $\mathcal{M}(S)$ preserves zero-term rank if and only if it preserves two consecutive zero-term ranks k and k + 1, where $0{\leq}k{\leq}min\{m,n\}-1$ if and only if it strongly preserves zero-term rank h, where $1{\leq}h{\leq}min\{m,n\}$.

  • Quantitative strucrure-activity relationships between the toxicity (LD$\_$50/) and molecular properties of amine and nitro compounds were tested. The all 19 compounds showed low correlations below 0.500 to their LD$\_$50/ values. When amine or nitro compounds were taken separately, the correlation between the calculated chemphysico parameters and LD$\_$50/ were also poor (r$^2$=0.4911, 3967 repectively). The overall relationships among the QSAR parameters were investigated. Molecular weight shows a high correlation with total surface area (r$^2$=0.9287); 0.9090 for zero-order connectivity and second-order connectivity : 0.8784 for bioconcentration factor and second-order connectivity. When amine compounds were taken to perform the statistical treatment, the relationships between parameters were as follows: 0.8436 for volume-negentropy; 0.8925 for volume-bioconcentration factor; 0.9929 for zero-order connectivity-Kow; zero-order connectivity-bioconcentration factor; 0.9141 for zero-order connectivity-solubility; 0.9718 for solubility-bioconcentration factor; 0.9894 for solubility-bioconcentration factor and 0.9319 for Kow-bioconcentration factor. On the other hand, nitro compounds showed different relationships as follows: 0.8952 for volume-I/O character; 0.9520 for volume-total surface area: 0.9351 for volume-molecular weight; 0.9351 for volume-MW; 0.9961 for Kow-Koc; 0.8455 for Kow-bioconcentration factor; 0.8879 for Koc-bioconcentration factor; 0.9987 for MW-total surface area respectively.
