A.C (activated carbon) is mainly used to remove VOCs (volatile organic compounds), however, it has many problems such as fire risk due to increasing of adsorbent surface temperature during VOCs ad/desorption, increased cost by frequent replacement cycles requirement and performance degradation when containing moisture. In order to solve these problems, many researches, hydrophobic zeolite adsorbents, have been reported. In this study, $NH_4{^+}Y$-zeolite was synthesized with Y-zeolite through steam treatment and acid treatment, which is one of the hydrophobic modification methods, to secure high surface area, thermal stability and humidity resistance. The Y, Y-550-HN, Y-600-HN and Y-650-HN had adsorption capacities of $23mg\;g^{-1}$, $38mg\;g^{-1}$, $77mg\;g^{-1}$, $61mg\;g^{-1}$. The change of Si/Al ratio, which is an index to confirm the degree of modification, was confirmed by XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometer) analysis. As a result, the adsorbtion performance was improved when Y-zeolite modified, and the Si/Al ratio of Y, Y-550-HN, Y-600-HN, Y-650-HN were increased to 3.1765, 6.6706, 7.3079, and 7.4635, respectively. Whereas it was confirmed that structural crystallization due to high heat treatment temperature affected performance degradation. Therefore, there is an optimal heat treatment temperature of Y-zeolite, optimum modification condition study could be a substitute for activated carbon as a condition for producing an adsorbent having high durability and stability.
Freundlich isotherms and Toth isotherms were obtained for benzene adsorption on activated carbon and zeolite 13X in static experiments. Breakthrough curves of benzene were measured in adsorption bed packed with the same adsorbents. Relation between breakthrough times and partial pressure of benzene was analyzed and the Freundlich isotherm parameters were determined. Adsorption amount of benzene predicted by the analysis of breakthrough experimental results was relatively consistent with that predicted by the static experimental results. Dynamic experiments for activated carbon bed, where more symmetric breakthrough curves were obtained, produced smaller errors with zeolite bed.
The adhesion characteristics of adsorbent during impregnation of Y-type and ZSM-5type zeolites into ceramic paper were analyzed, as the amount of silica sol in slurry for impregnation was varied. 31 wt% of zeolite particle, which is useful for VOC adsorption, was evenly dispersed and adhered on ceramic paper and original crystal structure of the zeolite remained unchanged even after binder application and heat treatment. Surface area of the impregnated ceramic paper was decreased compared with that of zeolite powder. And it was found to be attributed to the reduction of volume of mesopore while the volume of micropore under $20{\AA}$ was unchanged. Zeolite-impregnated honeycomb cylinder, whose diameter and length were 10 cm and 40 cm, respectively, was subjected to adsorption/desorption test with respect to toluene, MEK, cyclohexanone. All of the VOC's were removed by adsorption with efficiency higher than 97% and from the static adsorption test, $42 Nm^3/h$ of 300 ppmv-VOC-laden air was calculated be treated continuously, when the honeycomb was used in an adsorptive rotor system.

The effect of desorption pressure on $CO_2/N_2$ breakthrough behaviors for 4 different adsorbents was studied at a fixed bed. Zeolite 3A, 4A, 5A, and 13X pellets were used as adsorbents. Cyclic operations were executed with varying desorption pressure from vacuum (0 bar) to 3 bar while other conditions such as adsorption step pressure (3 bar), temperature (293 K), composition ($CO_2:N_2=10:90$vol%) and flow rate (400 ccm) were fixed at constant values. Each adsorption and desorption step was set as 80 min, which totaled up to 160 min per a cycle. 5 cycles with adsorption and desorption steps were run overall. After the experiment, breakthrough time, saturation time, and adsorption amount were measured and compared in order to find an optimum adsorbent and a proper operating condition for a post combustion $CO_2$ capture process.

In the present study, pure RHO zeolite was hydrothermally synthesized by using 18-crown-6 ether as a structure directing agent(SDA), and the small gases adsorption was investigated. Synthesized RHO zeolite was a cube shape particle of which average edge length was around $1.2{\mu}m$ and composed of primary crystallites having a diameter of around 100 to 200 nm. RHO zeolite structure was stable under 3h calcination at $600^{\circ}C$. Water adsorption data announced that RHO zeolite has a specific surface area of 483.32 m2/g and its micropore diameter was about 4 A. Gas adsorption was studied in the pressure range of 50 to 500 kPa for $CO_2$, $N_2$, $O_2$ and $H_2$. It was evident that RHO zeolite showed a strong $CO_2$ adsorption behavior. Especially, RHO zeolite showed a transient $CO_2$ adsorption behavior. The 3h $CO_2$ up-take at 50 kPa and 500 kPa was 1.283 and 3.357 mmol/g, respectively. The $CO_2/H_2$ selectivity was around 16 at 500 kPa. Compared with gas adsorption data for some representative microporous adsorbents, it was certain that RHO zeolite is a beneficial adsorbent for $CO_2/H_2$ separation.
In this study, conventional biofilters packed with flexible synthetic polyurethane (PU) foam carriers were operated to remove toluene from a contaminated air stream. PU foams containing various adsorbents (e.g., zeolite, sepiolite, dolomite and barite) were synthesized for the biofilter media and their adsorption characteristics of toluene were determined. Adsorption capacity of PU-adsorbent foam was in the order of PU-dolomite ${\approx}$ PU-zeolite > PU-sepiolite > PU-barite. During the biofiltration experiment, influent toluene concentration was in the range of 0-160 ppm and EBRT (i.e., empty bed residence time) was 45 seconds. Pressure drop of the biofilter bed was 4-5 mm $H_2O/m$ column height. The maximum removal capacity was in the order of PU-dolomite > PU-zeolite > PU-sepiolite > PU-barite, while the complete removal capacity was in the order of PU-dolomite > PU-sepiolite > PU-zeolite > PU-barite. The better biofiltration performance in PU-dolomite foam was because PU-dolomite foam had lower density and higher porosity than the others providing favorable conditions for microbial growth. The results of biodegradation kinetic analysis showed that PU-dolomite foam had higher maximum removal rate ($V_m\;=\;11.04\;g$ toluene/kg dry material/day) and saturation constant ($K_s\;=\;26.57\;ppm$) than the other PU foams. This supports that PU-dolomite foam was better than the others for biofilteration of toluene.

The honeycomb adsorbent was prepared for adsorbing and seadsorbent was prepared by using zeolite sheet, which contained zeolite as component. The steady-state adsorption properties and surface morphologies were analyzed and breakthrough characteristics were ananlyzed by providing 16% carbon dioxide mixed gas. By thermal regeneration, carbon dioxide concentration properties were analyzed, and the adsorptive separation process was compared between thermal swing adsorption and pressure swing adsorption after adsorbent temperature change during heating. The breakthrough results of the honeycomb showed possibility parating carbon dioxide from combustion exhaust gas, which had deep impact on climate change, and the characteristics of the adsorbent were studied. Na-X zeolite was coated on a honeycomb prepared with ceramic sheet or active carbon sheet so that the two honycomb can be used at high temperature. Third honeycomb of rotary adsorptive concentration process.
VOCs such as acetone, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene were adsorbed in a fixed-bed adsorber using zeolite synthesized from coal fly ash and 4 kinds of activated carbon at 101.3 kPa. The adsorber was operated batchwise with the charge of 5 g adsorbent to obtain the breakthrough curve of VOCs. Experiments were carried out at $40^{\circ}C$, nitrogen flow rate of $70cm^3/min$ and sparger temperature of $30^{\circ}C$. The deactivation model was tested for these curves by combining the adsorption of VOCs and the deactivation of adsorbent particles. The observed values of the adsorption rate constant and the deactivation rate constant were evaluated through analysis of the experimental breakthrough data using a nonlinear least square technique. The experimental breakthrough data were fitted very well to the deactivation model than the adsorption isotherm models in the literature. Also, adsorption capacities of adsorbents were obtained from the breakthrough curve to observe the correlation between adsorption capacity and the physical properties of VOCs.

The performance of five kind adsorbents, which can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the diesel engine occupying 85% of the fishing boat, was carried out and the emission reduction filter was manufactured and evaluated in the adsorption efficiency of the emission gas for 240 KW diesel portable generator. As a NOx emission filter made of mordenite which has an excellent cation exchange capacity was manufactured by ball type adsorbents having excellent specific surface area. The adsorption efficiency of mordenite material applying the emission reduction filter began to show up at the operating time 10 minutes in comparison with the activated carbon and zeolite materials, and it was exposed to continue until 100% capability with passing by 20 minutes. So the adsorption efficiency of the NOx reduction filter consistently maintained at the averaged 80%.

Six-valent chromium ($Cr^{6+}$) is a highly toxic pollutant, supplied in a variety of industrial activities such as leather tanning, cooling tower blowdown, and plating. Herein, we investigated the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ from aqueous phase using low-cost adsorbents. Steel slag, montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite, red mud, and acid treated red mud with 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 M HCl were used as adsorbent for the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ and the results showed that acid treated red mud with 2.0 M HCl (ATRM-2.0 M) had higher adsorption capacity of $Cr^{6+}$ than other adsorbents used. Accordingly, $Cr^{6+}$ removal by ATRM-2.0 M were studied in a batch system with respect to changes in initial concentration of $Cr^{6+}$, initial solution pH, adsorbent dose, adsorbent mixture, and seawater. Equilibrium sorption data were described well by Freundlich isotherm model. The influence of initial solution pH on $Cr^{6+}$ adsorption was insignificant. The use of the ATRM-2.0 M alone was more effective than mixing it with other adsorbents including red mud, zeolite, oyster shell, lime stone, and montmorillonite for the removal of $Cr^{6+}$. The $Cr^{6+}$ removal of the ATRM-2.0 M was slightly less in seawater than deionized water, resulting from the presence of anions in seawater competing for the favorable adsorption site on the surface of ATRM-2.0 M. It was concluded that the ATRM-2.0 M can be used as a potential adsorbent for the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ from the aqueous solutions.
