  • Synthetic zeolite A was prerared from domestic Hadong kaolin with sodium hydroxide solution and their ion exchange isotherms of $K^+$, $NH^{4+}$, $Li^+$ and $Ag^+$ ion were presented. The optimum reaction conditions for synthetic zeolite A from calcinated kaolin were 2 fold excess of 2N sodium hydroxide solution, 10$0^{\circ}C$ and 8 hours. It was observed that before the crystallization of zeolite A the samples reacted with sodium hydroxide solution had rather higher ion exchange capacities than zeolite A. The $K^+$-$Na^+$ and $Ag^+$$Na^+$ ion exchange isotherms were signoidal. The initial selectivity series was in the order $Ag^+$$K^+$>$Na^+$>$NH_4$>$Li^+$. Between approximately 33 and 67% replacement of soium ions the selectivity series became $Na^>$ and above 67% became $Ag^+$>$K^+$. Evidence were also presented to demonstrate that 8 out of 12 sodium ions per pseudo unit cell were not easily replaceable by lithium ions and 4 out of 12 not easily replaceable by ammonium ions.

  • A zeolite material with a Si/Al molar ratio of 1.2 was synthesized by changing the NaOH/CFA ratio of coal fly ash (CFA) via a fusion/hydrothermal reaction in the HD thermal power plant. The change in the crystal structure of the zeolite was confirmed using XRD and SEM, and the ammonia adsorption capacities of the synthesized zeolitic materials and a commercial zeolite (Na-A zeolite) were analyzed via an ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) process. The SEM and XRD results revealed out the zeolitic materials from the coal fly ash maintained a hexagonal Linde-type crystal structure similar to that of Na-A zeolite, but the crystallinity of the synthesized zeolitic material was reduced due to impurities. The NH3 adsorption capacity, determined from the NH3-TPD analysis of was 1.122 mmol/g of the synthesized zeolitic material, which was lower than the NH3 adsorption capacity of the Na-A zeolite.

  • Three binary ion-exchange isotherms of zeolite A have been determined using 0.1 M solutions of the aqueous nitrates for the one-step preparation of particular mixed-cation zeolite A compositions. Analyses were done primarily by flame emission spectrometry (FES), together with crystallographic determinations of $Cs^+$ and colorimetric determinations of $NH_{4^+}$. Corrections for a presumed impurity of extra-lattice species in powder sample were made for the determination of $Na^+$. The $Cs^+-Ag^+$ isootherm indicates a strong selectivity for $Ag^+$ through the entire range of zeolite composition. The $Ag^+-Na^+$ isotherm agrees very closely with that reported by Sherry and Walton, and that of $NH_{4^+}-Na^+$ resembles those obtained using zeolite pellets.

  • Salt occlusion in Zeolite is a unique phenomenon that takes place only when the salt size is similar to the window size of host zeolite. $KCIO_3$-occluded Zeolite, as an environment-friendly oxidant, has a high potential for effective removal of various organic pollutants. This study was carried to investigate the characteristics and the removal kinetics of fungicide chlorothalonil by zeolite-$KCIO_3$ complex. About 10% of $KCIO_3$ was occluded in zeolite pores synthesized by salt-thermal method from fly ash, although the occlusion amount was relatively less compared to that of nitrate salts. By occlusion with $KCIO_3$, no remarkable changes were found in X-ray diffraction patterns of cancrinite, whereas some decrease of overall peak intensities was found with those of sodalite. Different releasing kinetics of $CIO_3^-$ ion were observed in distilled water and soil solution from zeolite-$KCIO_3$ complex. Two reactions, hydration and diffusion, seem to be related with the release of $KCIO_3$. Therefore, the release isotherm of $CIO_3^-$ ion well fitted to the power function model which indicate the release was made by hydration and diffusion. The removal of chlorothalonil by zeolite and $KCIO_3$ reached at reaction equilibrium within 6 hours by 18% and 47% respectively. However, the chlorothalonil removal by the zeolite-$KCIO_3$ complex increased slowly and steadily up to 92% in 96 hours. These findings suggested that zeolite-$KCIO_3$ complex could be applied for effective removal of organic contaminants in the soil and aqueous environment.

  • The removal performance of copper ion was studied using Na-P1 zeolites synthesized from Jeju scoria. The scoria which is found in large amounts in Jeju Island, was sampled at four regions, Jeju-shi Bonggae-dong(A). Pukcheju-gun Hanlim-eup Sangmyong-ri Mangoreum(B), Pukcheju-gun Hanlim-eup Keumag-ri(C) and Namcheju-gun Andeok-myun Dongkwang-ri(D). Synthetic Na-P1 zeolites used in this study were more effective than natural zeolite and scoria for the removal of copper ion. The removal performances of copper ion decreased in the order of Na-P1(D) > Na-P1(C) > Na-P1(B) > Na-P1(A) among Na-P1 synthesized from the scoria according to region. These results showed the same trend with cation exchange capacity(CEC) for each synthetic zeolite, i.e., the synthetic Na-P1 zeolite with a higher CEC showed a higher removal performance. The effective diffusion coefficients of copper ion by synthetic Na-P1 zeolites were one hundred and ten times higher than those by a pure zeolite 4A and the zeolite A synthesized from coal fly ash, respectively.

  • Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology using reusable energy is a plausible process to capture $CO_2$ from non-point sources. In this paper, adsorption and desorption were repeatedly tested using low concentration $CO_2$. Three types of adsorbents were examined in cyclic $CO_2$ adsorption and thermal regeneration. Adsorption capacities of zeolite 5A, zeolite 13X and activated carbon were 21 mg/g, 12 mg/g and 6 mg/g, respectively. Zeolite 5A shows the highest adsorption capacities after cyclic thermal regeneration.

  • Development of the methods to organize zeolite microcrystals into closely packed and uniformly aligned monolayers on various substrates have been pursued viewing microparticles as a novel class of building blocks. We now report that the vertically aligned zeolite monolayer can be applied as novel supramolecularly organized systems for anisotropic photoluminescence in high dichroic ratio, to study energy transfer dynamics between the internal and external fluorophores, and to develop zeolite-based advanced materials. Study of polarized fluorescence spectroscopy and angle-dependent intensity change with dye molecules in different surroundings further provides insight into molecular interactions that can be used for the future design of optoelectronic device in nanometer size. In addition, this report shows that isolating of organic dye through surface treatment is crucial for preventing the egress of the incorporated dye molecules from the channels of zeolite to the solution and to enhance the anisotropic luminescence.

  • Natural gas reformed hydrogen is used as a fuel of fuel cell vehicle, PSA process is used for the purification of reformed hydrogen. In this study, the performance of CO adsorbent in PSA process was evaluated. Zeolite adsorbents used in the commercial PSA process is used. The physical and chemical properties of adsorbents were characterized using BET apparatus, XRD, and FE-SEM. The breakthrough apparatus modified from GC was used for the CO breakthrough experiment, the quantitative analysis of CO adsorption capacity was performed using CO breakthrough curve. Zeolite 10X and 13X showed superior CO adsorption capacity than activated alumina. The CO adsorption capacity of zeolite 10X is more than twice of zeolite 13X even the BET surface area is low. It seems that the presence of $Ca^{2+}$ cation in zeolite 10X is beneficial to the adsorption of CO.

  • The $NH_3$-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction of NO with excess of oxygen were systematically investigated over Cu-zeolite and Fe-zeolite catalysts. Cu-zeolite and Fe-zeolite catatysts to adapt the SCR technology for mobile diesel engines were prepared by liquid ion exchange and incipient wetness impregnation of $NH_4$-BEA and $NH_4$-ZSM-5 zeolites. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, FE-TEM (field emission transmission electron microscopy) and SEM/EDS. The SCR examinations performed under stationary conditions showed that the Cu-exchanged BEA catalyst revealed pronounced performance at low temperatures of $200{\sim}250^{\circ}C$. With respect to the Fe-zeolite catalyst, the Cu-zeolite catalyst showed a higher activity in the SCR reaction at low temperatures below $250^{\circ}C$. BEA zeolite based catalyst exhibited good activity in comparison with ZSM-5 zeolite based catalyst at low temperatures below $250^{\circ}C$.

  • PTMSP-PMMH-NaY zeolite composite membranes were prepared by the addition of 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt% NaY zeolite contents to PTMSP containing 20 wt% PMMH dendrimer. To investigate the physico-chemical characteristics of composite membranes, the analytical methods such as FT-IR, TGA, and SEM have been utilized, and the gas permeability and selectivity properties of hydrogen and nitrogen were evaluated. The permeability of the PTMSP-PMMH-NaY zeolite composite membranes increased as NaY zeolite content increased, the permeabilities of hydrogen and nitrogen gases were observed being 3,950~592,000 barrer and 1,550~143,000 barrer, respectively. Simultaneously, selectivity of hydrogen against nitrogen did not show a discernible difference at 0~30 wt% range of NaY zeolite contents and increased from 2.2 to 4.2 at 30~40 wt% range.
