  • The purpose of this study was to examine which sibling and parent-child characteristics were associated with siblisng warmth and conflict among Korean young adults. The data came from an online survey of Koreans aged 19-34 years who had at least one sibling and two living parents. We conducted a multilevel regression analysis using data from 193 men with 305 siblings and 203 women with 286 siblings. The results showed that, for men, the levels of warmth were higher when the sibling was younger, when they received more frequent financial and instrumental support from the sibling, and when maternal favoritism was relatively lower. Women reported higher levels of warmth when the sibling was a sister, when they provided more frequent support for the sibling, when they had a more affectionate relationship with the mother, and when paternal favoritism was lower. As for sibling conflict, the number of siblings was positively associated with the levels of conflict among both men and women. Maternal affection was negatively related with conflict for men, and paternal favoritism was positively related to conflict for women. Interestingly, women's sibling warmth and conflict were both higher when the sibling was a sister, which meant that relationships between sisters tended to be ambivalent. This study contributes to our understandings of Koreans' sibling relationships in young adulthood.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the residential environment satisfaction of young women's one-person households and the characteristics of young one-person households, and to present policy implications for their housing problems. Research design, data, and methodology: This study used 11th Korea Financial Panel Data. Analysis methods in this study include basic statistical analysis, frequency analysis, multiple regression analysis, and artificial neural network analysis. Results: As a result of the analysis of this study, 1) young one-person households showed that women had higher ratios of non-regular workers, real estate debt than men, and lower average income. The percentage of young people owning their own homes was very low at about 5%. 2) For young women, the higher the education level and monthly consumption, the lower the housing satisfaction. 3) Young women living in rental housing had lower housing satisfaction than their own. Conclusions: Women are paying more for housing security than men in young one-person households. In addition, the proportion of their own houses is very low. Therefore, there is a need for a policy on the housing safety issue of young women's one-person households. And policies to support young one-person households to own their own homes are required.

  • Background The length of the second digit (the index finger) relative to the length of the fourth digit (the ring finger) is sexually dimorphic as males have a lower second to fourth digit ratio (2D:4D). There is evidence that sex differences in 2D:4D arise from in utero concentrations of sex steroids, with a low 2D:4D (male typical ratio) being positively related to prenatal testosterone, while a high 2D:4D (female typical ratio) is positively associated with prenatal oestrogen Objective To investigate possible associations between 2D:4D ratio and sexually dimorphic body composition Methods 2D:4D ratio, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-hip ratio (WHR), weight, and body fat percentage was measured from 46 men and 20 women Results Digit ratio was found to be significantly lower in men than in women. No significant correlation between 2D:4D ratio and body compositions was found for both men and women while digit ratio in obese men was significantly higher than normal weight men. Conclusion This finding dose not support the significant correlation between digit ratio and sexually dimorphic body composition. However digit ratio in obese men was significantly higher than normal weight men.

  • Objectives: Although dietary supplements use in Korea has been rapidly increasing and women are more likely to take dietary supplements more than men, only a few studies have been conducted to investigate factors contributing to gender differences in dietary supplement use in the Korean population. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of dietary supplement use and also identify gender-specific key factors that contribute to it using the data of the 4th KNHANES. Methods: Subjects were divided into user and non-user groups according to the answer given to the question that asked whether they had used any dietary supplement for more than 2 weeks on a regular basis during the previous year. Factors related to dietary supplement use were examined by general characteristics, health behavior and eating behavior. Results: Prevalence of dietary supplement use was 13.6% for men and 20.6% for women. Users were more likely to be middle-aged, have higher income and education, have a spouse, or reside in dong areas in both men and women. Regarding health behaviors, men with desirable lifestyle behavior were more likely to take dietary supplements, while men who smoked were less likely to take dietary supplements. Regarding disease history, both men and women with a current disease had higher odds of taking supplements. With regard to dietary behavior, frequent eating out and nutrition attitude were associated with higher odds of taking supplements in both men and in women. Conclusions: Health or dietary behavior related factors that were associated with taking supplements differed by gender. These findings can be useful for planning gender-specific dietary education and health programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify men's beauty service markets based on socio-cultural appearance attitude and to compare their satisfaction and intention to revisit beauty service. The study was done by survey method. Data of three hundred men aged from 20's to 40's were collected by on-line survey. Descriptive analyses, factor analyses, cluster analyses, Duncan tests, multiple regressions, and path analyses were applied. The results are as follows: First, five factors were found for men's socio-cultural attitude for their appearance. They were high involvement in appearance, social appearance, appearance satisfaction, appearance comparison and low involvement in appearance. Second, cluster analysis based on socio-cultural attitude produced three customer groups such as high involvement, social concern & satisfaction, and low involvement. Third, customer groups showed significant differences in some demographics and some items of service dimensions, which resulted in significant differences in satisfaction, and intention to revisit beauty shop services. A high involvement group was composed of young and unmarried men with more frequent visit to beauty shop service. In general, both the high involvement and the social concern & satisfaction groups showed higher evaluations than the low concern group in some of service items, level of satisfaction, and intention to revisit. In conclusion, attitude on their appearance could be useful factors in segmenting men's beauty service market. Levels and types of beauty shop service should be differentiated among consumer markets.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the body composition, muscle circumference, and muscle activity of men in their 30s and 50s when the resistance exercise program was applied for 12 weeks, and to provide basic data for the preparation of the resistance exercise program for middle-aged men before entering old age. Nine men in their 30s and eleven 11 men in their 50s participated in the moderate intensity resistance exercise program for 12 weeks. Two weeks before the experiment, body composition, muscle circumference, and EMG were pre-tested, and then body composition and muscle circumference were additionally measured at the 8th week. Body composition, muscle circumference, and EMG were measured within 2 weeks after the 12 week exercise program. The measured data were compared and analyzed by Mixed design two-way ANOVA, and the following results were obtained. The body composition showed a significant difference only in the skeletal muscle mass, and it increased in the 30s group at 8 weeks. Muscle circumference did not show significant difference according to group and time. Muscle activity showed a significant difference according to group and time, and pectoralis major and triceps brachii showed a significant decrease to 30s group. The pectoralis major was higher in the 30s group at all times. In summary, when applying a 12-week resistance exercise program for young men and middle-aged men, the effect of improving muscle strength may appear similar, but they are not consistent, and it is thought that gradual changes in training variables are needed to improve muscle mass.

  • Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) is a useful diagnostic method to measure cerebral blood flow velocity in various cerebral disorders. However, we haven't data enough to be available for young persons, especially in the twenties in Korea. This study was performed to collect the basic data of the cerebral blood flow velocity and to understand the cerebral physiology in the twenties. We determined the mean velocities of middle, anterior, and posterior cerebral artery, and vertebral and basilar artery (MCA-V, ACA-V, PCA-V, VA-V, and BA-V, respectively) in eighty-two healthy volunteers. For evaluating cerebral autoregulation, only the MCA- V was measured under various conditions such as stable, apnea, and hyperventilation state. Right and left MCA-V were 80.66±14.03 and 83.22±14.40 cm/sec at stable state, 90.13±17.47 and 90.26±16.38 cm/sec at apnea, and 54.83±11.09 and 55.33±10.74 cm/sec at hyperventilation. Right and left ACA-V were 49.11±15.71 and 48.19±13.75 cm/sec. Right and left PCA-V were 39.44±9.12 and 37.91±6.74 cm/sec. Right and left VA-V were 33.65±9.26 and 36.l8±10.39 cm/sec. BA-V was 48.49±11.16 cm/sec. Right and left MCA- V, V A-V, and right ACA- V and PCA- V in women were higher than those of men (P<0.05). No significant differences were found between men and women in the others. These findings indicate that cerebral hemodynamics and autoregulation were normal in young people in their twenties. The velocities of MCA, ACA, PCA, and BA were high values in women as compared with men.

  • Background: This study investigated the association between obesity and cardiometabolic disease clusters in Korean adults aged 19-39 years. Methods: We included 3,785 participants (1,767 men and 2,018 women) aged 19-39 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2020-2022). The risk factors for cardiometabolic disease were defined as follows: high blood pressure; hypertriglyceridemia; hyperuricemia; and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high fasting plasma glucose, elevated alanine aminotransferase levels. Results: The prevalence of participants with ≥ 1, ≥ 2, and ≥ 3 cardiometabolic disease risk factors was 95.2%, 84.2%, and 65.6% in men and 90.0%, 70.5%, and 43.0%, in women with class 2-3 obesity, respectively. Compared to those for young adults with underweight/normal weight, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors were 17.26 (8.32-35.80) for ≥ 1; 19.43 (12.18-31.00) for ≥ 2; and 22.93 (14.15-37.15) for ≥ 3 factors in men with class 2-3 obesity and 14.67 (8.00-26.91) for ≥ 1; 20.88 (12.15-35.88) for ≥ 2; and 36.26 (20.20-65.09) for ≥ 3 factors in women with class 2-3 obesity. Conclusion: Although the patients were young, the prevalence and ORs for cardiometabolic disease risk factor clusters in young adults with obesity were prominently high. Prevention and management of obesity in young Korean adults are urgently needed at both individual and public levels.

  • This is the study on the preference of men's jewelry in Korea and China. It started to change and develop the market of modern men's jewelry, which is increasingly growing. The men's jewelry market, in Korea, has developed as small market as part of women's, and since 2006, it has started to grow as men's jewelry. However, it is still treated only by some brands. It is a time when innovation is needed because design diversity is weak. The men's jewelry market in China is rapidly developing under the influence of young emerging rich people. However, as in Korea, a research on the design of men's jewelry is insufficient, so it is urgent to study the preference for men's jewelry. Each survey was conducted on a the tie-pin and cufflinks as the most representative men's jewelry in Korea and China. As a result, both countries were not satisfied with the designs currently being sold. In Korea, the popularity of the tie-pin and the cufflinks is made to some extent, and customizing to consumer and innovative development are required. And, in China, the popularity of the tie-pin and the cufflinks made it possible to expect the growth of the men's jewelry market.
