  • This study examined the insolvency likelihood of young debtors from the 2018 Household Financial and Welfare Survey. This study used the Household Default Risk Index (HDRI), which considers the ratio of total debt to total assets (DTA), and a total debt service ratio (DSR) to examine the insolvency level of debtors. The descriptive analyses showed no difference in frequency of households with a high probability of insolvency between those less than 35 years of age and those over 35 years of age. However, the median HDRI value for those less than 35 years of age was higher than those over 35 years of age. The multivariate analyses indicated that educational expenses for young Korean debtors was a factor that increased their probability of insolvency, while income was the only variable that decreased their insolvency likelihood.

  • It has been a long tradition in the field of nutrition that the degree of malnutrition in a community used to be estimated by the degree of the adequacy of nutrients consumption in the households. The adequacy of nutrient consumption in the households then used to be applied to estimate the degree of malnutrition of the children. Such a practice is theoretically acceptable in the community where the food sharing within the household is individual serving style such as in European countries. However, the community where the dietary habit in the household is communal such as in Korea, the estimation of single serving portion from household consumption is quite uncertain. Because of such an uncertainty this study is intended to test the validity of the household food consumption level as an indication of nutritional status of the children in the rural farm households in Korea. The date from the household consumption survey in 1982 by the Korean Rural Nutrition Institute has been used for the analysis of food consumption levels of the households. The survey on the nutritional status of children of 127 preschool children from 78 farm households, has been conducted during May 1983. The nutritional status of the children has been directly measured by weight, height, skinfold thickness, haemoglobin, haematocrit and morbidity of influenza and diarrhoea. The analysis has been conducted to distinguish the differences in prevalence of malnutrition of children from the estimated of household consumption and that of from the direct measurement of nutritional status of children. The results show that the degree of malnutrition of the estimated by the household consumption level has not related with the prevalence of malnutrition by the direct measures of nutritional status of the children. Therefore, the validity of household consumption level as an indication of nutrional status in a same household is quite uncertain for the population studied.

Statistics were frequencies, means, percentile, and logistic analysis. The results were as follows. First, old-aged had higher level of total income, total expenditure and total assets than either young-aged or middle-aged. In addition, households those holding private pensions were likely to have higher total income, total expenditure and total assets than those owning no private pension. while middle-aged had a highest total debts. Second, gini coefficients of total income and total expenditure between three aged groups were similar, but old-aged had the highest gini coefficient of total assets and total debts. In particular, gini coefficients of total assets and total debts of households those having no private pension were greater than those holding private pensions. third, contributing factors to private pension ownership of young-aged were family & household-related factor and financial factor, middle-aged's factors were household head's characteristics and financial factor. • Financial soundness in the household sector matters for financial stability and for the real economy. The level of household debt in Korea raises concern about the financial soundness of the household sector due to its size, growth rate and quality. Against this backdrop, we assess the financial vulnerability of borrowers based on an analysis of credit bureau (CB) data, in which the actual credit activities of most individuals are recorded at a high frequency in Korea. We construct over-indebtedness indicators from the CB data and then assess the predictability of forthcoming defaults. Based on the over-indebtedness indicators, we show how borrowers are distributed in terms of over-indebtedness and how the over-indebted differ from average borrowers in terms of their characteristics. Furthermore, we show how the aggregate credit risk in the household sector would change under macroeconomic distress by analyzing how each borrower's credit quality would be affected by adverse shocks. The findings of this paper may contribute to assessing household debt vulnerability and to enhancing regulatory and supervisory practices for financial stability.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore housing cost burden of young single- or two-person households in the United States who have recently moved for job-related reasons. Total 580 households were selected from 2009 American Housing Survey public-use microdata for data analysis. The findings are as follows: (1) Targeted single-person households were characterized as younger households with higher educational attainment, lower household income, and greater proportion of renters, multifamily housing residents and households with housing cost burden than other households; (2) two-person households showed a higher income level and lower housing cost burden; (3) characteristics that showed significant influences on housing cost burden were household size, householder's age, gender, race and educational attainment, household income level and tenure type; and (4) a linear combination of household size, household income, whether or not a low-income household, residency in metropolitan area, and home structural type were found to be most efficient to predict a single- or two-person household's housing cost burden regardless of the household size.

  • This research intends to find out the impact of housing wealth of home-owning pre-retirees and older adults consisting of young-old, middle-old and old-old groups on their household consumption. In doing so, this research analyzes 2,350 home-owning households by utilizing the 17th Korean Labour and Income Panel Study (KLIPS). The results show that housing wealth has a statistically significant effect on non-durable consumption of the pre-retirees, and young-old and middle-old groups of older adults, and housing wealth has a much stronger effect on household expenditure than does financial wealth or real estate. It's found that the consumption elasticity is particularly greater for female-headed households living in SMA, residing in apartments, holding a lower debt-to-asset ratio and being a pensioner. The empirical findings imply that the old-old group of older adults is unlikely to actively tap into their housing windfalls since housing asset becomes the last to dispose in the course of an individual's life. As housing wealth effects are especially strong when liquidity constraints faced by older adults are removed, it's of significance to substantially reduce household debt before retirement in order to constantly maintain an adequate level of household consumption or to promptly prepare for future contingencies.

  • Household debt in Korea raises concerns about the resilience of the economy due to its size and quality. Against this backdrop, we investigate if household leverage matters for private consumption in adverse economic environments even without severe financial disruptions. We find that the balance sheet positions in terms of the leverage ratio may weaken consumption growth. We also find that the depressive effect of debt on consumption may differ across types of consumer spending and household characteristics. In particular, the effects of indebtedness have been much stronger in relation to durable goods expenditures than in other areas. In addition, debtors in high-income (wealth) groups have also shown downward adjustments in consumption even more so than low-income (wealth) groups. These findings imply that debtors' precautionary behavior may serve as an important channel from leverage to consumer spending.

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the influences of household chaos on self-control of young children and to investigate whether teachers' limit-setting styles had moderating effects. Methods: The participants were 184 children (83 boys and 101 girls), at age 3 -5, their mothers and teachers working at daycare centers located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression. Moderating effects were examined using the Mplus8.0 program. Results: The results indicated that household chaos as well as teacher's permissive and logical limit-setting styles had significant effects on self-control of preschoolers. The lower the level of household chaos was, the higher the level of self-control of preschoolers was. The level of self-control was more likely to be high when teachers used logical limit-setting with detailed explanation to children whereas it was lower when they used more permissive limit-setting. In addition, teachers' logical limit-setting moderated the relation between household chaos and self-control of preschoolers. That is, the effects of household chaos on preschoolers' self-control were mitigated when the level of logical limit-setting was high compared to when it was low. Conclusion/Implications: The results suggested that both household chaos and teachers' limit-setting styles play important roles in increasing self-control of preschoolers.
