  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine factors affecting happiness of adolescents who attended community child centers. Methods: We surveyed 154 adolescents attending a community child center in P City with a structured self-report questionnaire from October 3 to October 15, 2016. Data was analyzed by SPSS 18.0 descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff\acute{e}test$, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean scores of family strength, friend support, teacher support, and happiness were $3.8{\pm}0.84$, $3.8{\pm}0.98$, $3.7{\pm}0.84$ and $3.7{\pm}0.63$. There were significant differences in happiness according to the subjects' number of close friends and duration of their stay at the community child center. There were a significant positive correlations among family strength, friend support, teacher support, and happiness. The most significant factors affecting happiness included friend support (${\beta}=.40$) and peaceable family strength (${\beta}=.35$). These variables explained 44% of the total variance in happiness. Conclusion: It is desirable to prepare and support measures to increase friends' support and family strength in order to improve happiness of adolescents attending community child centers. The findings suggest that it is necessary to develop nursing intervention programs to promote friend support and family strength.

  • Subjects were two teachers each with higher or with lower play teaching efficacy, and the 111 four and five-year-old children they taught. Using naturalistic observation, children's constructive play was videotaped and transcribed for 60 minutes on ten consecutive days in each classroom. Play was analyzed by level of constructive play, continuous length of play, variety of materials, enrichment of activities, and coherence of content. Constructive play of children whose teachers had higher efficacy in teaching play showed longer continuous play, used a higher variety of materials, and their play had more creative integrity. Five-year-olds exhibited longer continuous play, used a larger variety of play materials, more enrichment of play activity, and more coherence in play contents than four-year-olds.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate children's perception of reading. The researchers interviewed 120 children aged 5 to 7 (40 for each age group) by using a specially designed interview format. The study of Johns (1973) was referred to as a guide in preparing the format. Responses of the children were classified in accordance with criteria worked out on the basis of the researchers' previous studies and analyzed in terms of frequencies and percentiles by age group. ${\chi}^2$ test was used to analyze the data. The findings of the study were: (1) The younger the children, the higher the rate of showing no response or of responding only to concrete incidents or things. Older children in general showed higher responses relevant to reading comprehension than younger ones. (2) Older children were more inclined than younger ones to regard the process of reading as a skill-oriented, teacher-based process. (3) Children in these age groups showed little perception of reading's objectives of comprehension and communication.

Methods: To that end, 36 prospective child care teachers attending nursery school applied to the maker-education program and to the curriculum of children's literature and play. The collected interview materials and student journals were qualitatively analyzed. Results: The results showed that prospective child care teachers started with mixed expectations and but then actively participated in worries classes with interest and had fun. Also, in the stage of sharing, they changed from having difficulty communicating with colleagues to developing an attitude of cooperation and unity through communication. In addition, it has been shown that from feeling the difficulties of planning, planning changes and modifications are directly related to their development and that they are quickly and wisely dealt with. Conclusion/Implications: It is recognized that there is a need for a follow-up study to verify the effect of this as meaningful implications are derived from the effects of positively accepting feedback, planning to attempt a step-by-step approach, and active attitude toward communication between colleagues.

Methods: The study was conducted with 282 teachers working in kindergartens and day care centers located in Jeollabukdo, The data were analyzed using Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation Analysis, and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. Results: The results of this study are as follows. First, significant positive correlation appeared among early childhood teachers' resilience, social support, and teacher efficacy. The whole social support showed positive correlation in all sub-factors of resilience, and the whole teacher efficacy did positive correlation in all sub-factors of resilience. • This study investigated the effect of young children's interaction with a teacher and computer environments on their development of representational competence cf replay, the children's ability to construct and reconstruct actions. A pretest-posttest design with one experimental group and one control group was used; quantitative analyses, including interview assessments and coded observations of children's work in the context of educational interventions were supplemented by qualitative analyses of this work. Thirty-nine children (2-5 years of age) were randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group. The educational intervention provided to the experimental group involved a sequence of twenty sessions incorporating a series of three computer environments. A teaching strategy, based on Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and Sigel's distancing theory, was used to mediate children's interaction with these computer environments. Results indicated that children's representational competence kept developing and reached a higher stage and the educational intervention fostered the development of representational competence, with strong evidence of near transfer but no evidence of far transfer. These results suggest that representational competence is a teachable concept and that a complex mediating structure allows children to reconstruct their previous experiences and apply them to problem situations.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate sex differences in creativity among young children and differences in creativity as a function of the questioning patterns of teachers. The subjects were 4 teachers and 133 five-year-old children (63 boys and 70 girls). The questioning of teachers were categorized into divergent vs. convergent patterns by 3 trained observers. The TTCT (Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking) was administered to the subjects. Creativity scores on fluency, elaboration, originality, and abstractness of titles differed by questioning patterns. Girls' elaboration scores were higher than boys' as a function of teachers' divergent questioning patterns. Boys' abstractness of titles was higher than girls' as a function of teacher's convergent questioning patterns.

  • In order toidentify the daily activities of five-year-old children in a daycare center, the 23 children in "Yellow" class at "Yellow" Daycare Center were observed for seven months. Research was informed by a qualitative approach. Findings were that : children were rigidly attached to a time frame built into their daily classroom schedule, arranged by time and classroom space allotted to each unit. The meaning to the children was to be found in their "busyness;" they were very busy finalizing activities imposed by teachers within a short period of time. They spent most of their time moving about from one space to another within the classroom, and they played with their mostly artificial toys under rules set by the teacher.

  • The present study investigated differences in children's school achievement and emotional and social development by type of after-school care: self-care and mother-care. It also examined relationships between children's developmental outcomes and ecological variables, including individual, familial, and environmental variables by care methods. The data of 330 mother-care and 161 self-care children was provided by teachers, mothers, and the children themselves. The analyses of the data were conducted by t-test, correlation, and regression. Findings were that mother-care children had higher scores in grades, school adjustment and teacher relationship and lower depression and withdrawn behaviors than self-care children; after-school activities and peer support predicted the developmental outcomes of mother-care children; gender, autonomous ability, and behavior control predicted the development of self-care children.
