Openings in slabs are usually required for many different applications such as aeriation ducts and air conditioning. Opening in concrete slabs due to cutouts significantly decrease the member stiffness. There are different techniques to strengthen slabs with opening cutouts. This study presents experimental and numerical investigations on the use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) as strengthening material to strengthen and restore the load carrying capacity of R.C. slabs after having cutout in the hogging moment region. The experimental program consisted of testing five (oneway spanning R.C. flat slabs) with overhang. All slabs were prismatic, rectangular in cross-section and nominally 2000 mm long, 1000 mm width, and 100 mm thickness with a clear span (distance between supports) of 1200 mm and the overhang length is 700 mm. All slabs were loaded up to 30 kN (45% of ultimate load for reference slab, before yielding of the longitudinal reinforcement), then the load was kept constant during cutting concrete and steel bars (producing cut out). After that operation, slabs were loaded till failure. An analytical study using finite element analysis (FEA) is performed using the commercial software ANSYS. The FEA has been validated and calibrated using the experimental results. The FE model was found to be in a good agreement with the experimental results. The investigated key parameters were slab aspect ratio for the opening ratios of [1:1, 2:1], CFRP layers and the laminates widths, positions for cutouts and the CFRP configurations around cutouts.
Several damages due to large displacement caused by liquefaction have been reported increasingly. Numerical procedures based on effective stress analysis are therefore necessary to predict liquefaction-induced deformation. In this paper, the fully coupled effective stress model called UBCSAND is proposed to simulate pore pressure rise due to earthquake or repeated loadings. The proposed model is a modification of the simple perfect elasto-plactic Mohr-Coulomb model, and can simulate a continuous yielding by mobilizing friction and dilation angles below failure state. Yield function is defined as the ratio of shear stress to mean normal stress. It is radial lines on stress space and has the same shape of Mohr-Columob failure envelope. Plastic hardening is based on an isotropic and kinematic hardening rule. The proposed model always causes plastic deformation during loading and reloading but it predicts elastic unloading. It is verified by capturing direct simple shear tests on loose Fraser River sand.
Previous theoretical equations for the shear capacity of steel beam to concrete filled steel tube (CFT) column connections vary in the assumptions for the shear deformation mechanisms and adopt different equations for calculating shear strength of each component (steel tube webs, steel tube flanges, diaphragms, and concrete etc.); thus result in different equations for calculating shear strength of the joint. Besides, shear force-deformation relations of the joint, needed for estimating building drift, are not well developed at the present. This paper compares previously proposed equations for joint shear capacity, discusses the shear deformation mechanism of the joint, and suggests recommendations for obtaining more accurate predictions. Finite element analyses of internal diaphragm connections to CFT columns were carried out in ABAQUS. ABAQUS results and theoretical estimations of the shear capacities were then used to calibrate rotational springs in joint elements in OpenSEES simulating the shear deformation behavior of the joint. The ABAQUS and OpenSEES results were validated with experimental results available. Results show that: (1) shear deformation of the steel tube dominates the deformation of the joint; while the thickness of the diaphragms has a negligible effect; (2) in OpenSEES simulation, the joint behavior is highly dependent on the yielding strength given to the rotational spring; and (3) axial force ratio has a significant effect on the joint deformation of the specimen analyzed. Finally, modified joint shear force-deformation relations are proposed based on previous theory.
To explore the feasibility of eliminating the longitudinal rebars and stirrups by using ultra-high-performance fiber reinforcement concrete (UHPFRC) in concrete encased steel composite stub column, compressive behavior of UHPFRC encased steel stub column has been experimentally investigated. Effect of concrete types (normal strength concrete, high strength concrete and UHPFRC), fiber fractions, and transverse reinforcement ratio on failure mode, ductility behavior and axial compressive resistance of composite columns have been quantified through axial compression tests. The experimental results show that concrete encased composite columns with NSC and HSC exhibit concrete crushing and spalling failure, respectively, while composite columns using UHPFRC exhibit concrete spitting and no concrete spalling is observed after failure. The incorporation of steel fiber as micro reinforcement significantly improves the concrete toughness, restrains the crack propagation and thus avoids the concrete spalling. No evidence of local buckling of rebars or yielding of stirrups has been detected in composite columns using UHPFRC. Steel fibers improve the bond strength between the concrete and, rebars and core shaped steel which contribute to the improvement of confining pressure on concrete. Three prediction models in Eurocode 4, AISC 360 and JGJ 138 and a proposed toughness index (T.I.) are employed to evaluate the compressive resistance and post peak ductility of the composite columns. It is found that all these three models predict close the compressive resistance of UHPFRC encased composite columns with/without the transverse reinforcement. UHPFRC encased composite columns can achieve a comparable level of ductility with the reinforced concrete (RC) columns using normal strength concrete. In terms of compressive resistance behavior, the feasibility of UHPFRC encased steel composite stub columns with lesser longitudinal reinforcement and stirrups has been verified in this study.

The effects of linear free energy relationship (LFER) on the imidoyl proton (H${\alpha}$)-substituent chemical shift (SCS) in case of varying para-substituted C-phenyl group in N-benzylideneaniline derivatives were studied. The H${\alpha}$-SCS values and LFER parameters such as ${\sigma}$,${\sigma}^+$, ${\sigma}_I$,${\sigma}_R, F and R were applied to the Hammett, Okamoto-Brown, and Taft, Swain-Lupton's dual substituents parameter (DSP) equations. The results were: (1) the blending coefficient values, ${\lambda}$ = 2.8∼3.2, it's means that the resonance effect (R) was larger than inductive effect (I) and field effect (F), and (2) the values of percent resonance and percent field effects were %R = 66.6 and %F = 33.4, respectively, yielding the ratio of resonance effect (R) to field effect (F) of 2 : 1.

Conceptual design of scroll expander and scroll compressor for 10kW-class Stirling engine utilizing solar energy as heat source has been carried out to estimate the applicability of scroll mechanism for Stirling cycle. CO2 was chosen as working fluid, since it has lower expansion index and higher density among probably usable gases. Gas temperature at the expander inlet was set at $700^{\circ}C$, and that at the compressor inlet was at $40^{\circ}C$. System efficiency reached maximum at the pressure ratio of about 2.5, and the peak efficiency increased with increasing high side pressure. Due to safety concern, the pressure condition of 6 MPa/2.5 MPa was chosen as design condition. Orbiting scroll members for the expander and compressor were designed to have double-sided structure in order to reduce the overall scroll size and to cancel out the axial gas forces acting on the orbiting scroll base plate. By parametric study on the scroll profile, smaller possible size for the scroll members was obtained. With the shaft speed of 3600rpm, the shaft output of the designed scroll expander was calculated to be 45.4kW, while input power for the scroll compressor was 34.5kW, yielding 10.9kW for the output power of the Stirling engine. System efficiency was estimated to be about 7.3%, and overall efficiencies of the scroll expander and compressor were around 84.1% and 88.3%, respectively.

In this study, the plane stress fracture toughness and Tearing modulus are investigated for various crack ratios using the J integral. To evaluate the J integral and Tearing modulus, both experiments and estimation are used. The thickness of the low carbon steel specimens that is used in the experiments is 3mm. The type of specimen that is considered in the study is center-cracked-tension one. The measurements of crack length are performed by unloading compliance method. In the estimation of crack parameters such as the J integral and load line displacement, the Ramberg and Osgood stress strain law is assumed. Then simple formulas are given for estimating the crack parameters from contained yielding to fully plastic solutions. Obtained results are as follows; (1) When the crack ratio is in the range of 0.500 - 0.701, the plane stress fracture toughness is almost constant regardless of crack ratios. (2) The fracture toughness (J$\_$c/) and Tearing modulus (T) obtained are J$\_$c/=28.51kgf/mm, T=677.7 for base metal, J$\_$c/=31.85kgf/mm, T=742.0 for annealed metal. (3) Simpson's and McCabe's formulas which consider crack growth in estimating J integral are shown more conservative J and lower T than Rice's and Sumpter's. (4) Comparison of the prediction with the actual experimental measurements by Simpson's formula shows good agreement.
Ten Half precast concrete slabs reinforced with welded deformed wire fabric were tested under two concentrated loads to investigate the flexural moment and ductile capacity. The test variables were the compressive strength of topping concrete, quantitative roughness, and reinforcernent ratio. The effects of each test variables were studied separately. Test results were as followings. The ultimate strength design method is applicable to predict flexural strength for Half P.C. concrete slab with welded deformed wire fabric and quantitative roughness. It is
proper to consider 0.0035 strain ;is yielding stress of the welded deformed wire fabric. The ductility index of Half precast concrete slab with welded deformed wire fabric showed lower value. Therefore to enhance the ductility capacity the normal defomed bar should be used with the welded deformed wire fabric for the longitudinal reinforcement.

Delphinidin is a major anthocyanidin compound found in various vegetables and fruits. It has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and various other biological activities. In this study we demonstrated the anti-cancer activity of delphinidin, which was related to autophagy, in radiation-exposed non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Radiosensitising effects were assessed in vitro by treating cells with a subcytotoxic dose of delphinidin (5 μM) before exposure to γ-ionising radiation (IR). We found that treatment with delphinidin or IR induced NSCLC cell death in vitro; however the combination of delphinidin pre-treatment and IR was more effective than either agent alone, yielding a radiation enhancement ratio of 1.54 at the 50% lethal dose. Moreover, combined treatment with delphinidin and IR, enhanced apoptotic cell death, suppressed the mTOR pathway, and activated the JNK/MAPK pathway. Delphinidin inhibited the phosphorylation of PI3K, AKT, and mTOR, and increased the expression of autophagy-induced cell death associated-protein in radiation-exposed NSCLC cells. In addition, JNK phosphorylation was upregulated by delphinidin pre-treatment in radiation-exposed NSCLC cells. Collectively, these results show that delphinidin acts as a radiation-sensitizing agent through autophagy induction and JNK/MAPK pathway activation, thus enhancing apoptotic cell death in NSCLC cells.

Concrete is a suitable construction material for long-term structure, however, it is needed to understand the calcium leaching damage caused by exposure to underground pure water for a long time. In this paper, it is experimentally investigated that the characteristics of flexural behavior in RC member damaged by calcium leaching degradation. From the test results, when calcium leaching is happened, yielding load and flexural rigidity is reduced, neutral axis depth and displacement is increased. That is, calcium leaching degradation adversely affects RC member performance. And, when the mineral admixture is used in the calcium leaching environment, it is considered that the optimal replacement ratio should be prepared according to the type of mineral admixture.
