Effects of Types and Application Levels of Swine Manure on Herbage Productivity, Improvement of Soil Fertility and Environmental Pollution in Mixed Grassland (가축분뇨의 처리형태와 시용수준이 영년초지의 생산성, 지력증진 및 환경에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the type and application level of swine manure on herbage productivity, efficiency of nitrogen utilization and environmental pollution by the leaching of nitrogen compounds in mixed grassland. The field experiment was carried out on established grassland sward growing on silt clay loam soil. Main plots were the types of swine manure, such as swine manure fermented with sawdust(SMFWS), swine manure fermented without sawdust(SMF) and swine slurry(SS), and mineral fertilizer(Urea). Subplots were the application levels of swine manure, such as 100, 200 and 400 kgN/ha, The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Herbage productivity, nutritive value and nitrogen yields were the highest with mineral fertilizer and followed by swine slurry(SS), and the lowest with swine manure fermented with sawdust(SMFS). As compared with dry matter(DM) yield by application of mineral fertilizer(100%), the DM percents of SMFWS, SMFS and SS were 90.6, 80,9 and 76.8%, respectively. 2. Organic matter(OM) contents of the soil were increased by the applications of swine manure. OM contents were the high set with SMFS and the lowest with mineral fertilizer. 3. The amounts of nitrate leaching by types and application levels of swine manure were the highest in the end of Aug. and early of Sep. during the seasons and ranged from 10 to 25ppm.

Quality improvement of high temperature-heated shrimp via pretreatment (전처리 방법에 따른 고온 가열 새우의 품질 향상)

  • In order to prevent the blackening and texture softening of heated shrimp, the pH was adjusted by soaking shrimps in acidic and alkali solutions, and their qualities were evaluated. The lightness of shrimps pretreated with 0.2% (w/w) citric acid and 0.05% (w/w) ascorbic acid solution increased by 20% compared to that of the control. The strength of mechanical hardness of shrimps soaked in acetic acid and phosphate solution (pH 6.0) was significantly higher ($1209g_f$) compared to that of untreated shrimp ($801g_f$; p<0.05), and the overall preference of texture was 0.4 points higher than that of the control in the descriptive sensory evaluation (p<0.05). In contrast, soaking in solution of pH 8 exhibited a weak texture hardening effect ($855g_f$). Additionally, the hardness of the heated shrimp after soaking at an adjusted pH of 4.0 increased to $4046g_f$, but the yield based on weight decreased to 38% compared to that of untreated shrimp (70%; p<0.05).

  • The by-products of red ginseng marc showing the improvement of health has been strongly studied because of the expectation of possibility to be used as the functional foods. This research was to investigate the extraction, separation, isolation, and evaluation of crude acidic polysaccharides related to antioxidant activity, sequently chemical structure of those products was evaluated by FT-IR and NMR. Compared with other solvents such as ethanol, methanol, propanol, acetone, and butanol, ethanol was selected. The concentration of red ginseng solution for extraction was selected as 10%(w/v) related to extraction yield(11.95%) and amount(11.8 mg/ml). In the ion exchange chromatography, aidic polysaccharides showing the highest antioxidant activity was obtained when eluted by distilled water. As results of structural analysis by FT-IR and NMR, peaks corresponding to C-O, C-O-O-, C-H, anomeric C-6, and repeated C-1 and C-6 linkages was to be presumed to be ($1{\rightarrow}6$) glycosidic linkage with the typical acidic polysaccharide.

  • This study was performed to compare the effects of immuno-modulating activities of Rhodiola sachalinensis A. Bor. fractionized by consecutive solvent separation. The Cytotoxicity of all fractionized extracts on human kidney cell (HEK293) was lower than crude extracts. Generally, the butanol and chloroform extracts showed less cytotoxicity on about 10.07% and 9.67% than the crude extracts. For human immune B and T cell growth, chloroform fraction showed the highest cell growth compared to the control. The secretion of cytokines (IL-6, $TNF-\alpha$) on human B and T cells were increased by adding chloroform extracts. Also, NK cell growth was significantly improved up to nearly 30% by adding the supernatant of B cell medium grown with the chloroform fraction. It was also found that chloroform fraction could yield higher nitric oxide production from macrophage than untreated control cells. Differentiation of HL-60 cells was increased up to 131.9% after treatment with chloroform fraction extracts, compared to the control. These results indicate that the chloroform fraction of R. sachalinensis have high immune activation activity than others fractions and the crude extracts, implying that this chloroform fractions could be used a new functional material.

Postharvest Handling and Marketing Management for Making High Salability of Sweetpotatoes (상품성 제고를 위한 고구마 수확 후 관리 및 출하기술)

  • The qualities including taste of sweetpotato stored during the winter which can display in the spring market in Korea are affected by availability of storage for the roots. In order to make high storage availability of sweetpotato, the postharvest handlings should be done thoroughly from the moment of harvest until shipping them to the market. A lot of procedures that must be handled carefully for improving postharvest management are as follows; digging, trimming, gathering, putting in storage containers, carrying them from field to house, curing, storing, washing, drying, selecting marketable roots, packing and shipping to the market, etc.. Sweetpotatoes have a high moisture content, and a relatively thin and delicate skin, and are sensitive to chilling, so careless postharvest handling can lead to both quantitative and qualitative losses which may be extremely high in some circumstances. From now on research has concentrated on the improvement of postharvest conditions to increase yield and lower disease rates. Storage, which makes sweetpotatoes available through out the year, benefits both the producer and the consumer. Seven very important points must be needed in order to get the best quality marketable roots in the storing of sweetpotatos : $\circled1$The storage house must be clean and sanitary, $\circled2$The crop must be harvested before the first frost to avoid low-temperature injury, $\circled3$Particular care must be taken to avoid cutting, bruising, or other injuries of the sweetpotatoes during digging, picking up, grading, placing in containers, and moving to the storage house, $\circled4$Select sound, disease-free roots for storage $\circled5$Sweetpotatoes should be stored in properly stacked containers $\circled6$Cure immediately after harvest, preferably at 32∼33$^{\circ}C$ and 90 to 95 percent relative humidity for 4 to 7 days, After curing the temperature should be reduced to 13$^{\circ}C$ to 16$^{\circ}C$ by ventilating the storage with outside air. $\circled7$Store at 12$^{\circ}C$ to 14$^{\circ}C$ and a relative humidity of 80 to 85 percent. Storage houses should be located on suitable sites and should be tightly constructed and insulated so that temperature and humidity will be uniform. Sweetpotatoes are usually not washed and graded, and lately sometimes washed, graded, waxed, before being shipped to market. Consumer packaging of sweetpotatoes in paper boxes(10-15kg) or film bags is done mainly to aid marketing. The shelf life of washed roots in consumer packs in only 1 to 2 weeks. Weight loss of roots during marketing is much less in perforated film bags than in mesh and paper bags. Perforation of 0.8 to 1kg polyethylene bags with about six 6mm holes is essential ; to lower the internal relative humidity and avoid excessive sprouting, rooting, and dampness. Development and use of better postharvest handling with good storage facilities or marketing methods can minimize sweetpotate losses and has an effect of indirectly increasing productivity and farmer’s income.

  • A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of zeolite application and vinyl mulching on the changes in soil physico-chemical properties and yield of silage corn on the newly-reclaimed sloped land. Corn (Suweon 19) was cultivated under 4 application levels of zeolite, 0, 500, 1,000 and 1,500 kg/10a, with and without vinyl mulching, and various soil physico-chemical properties and corn growth were investigated. Soil physical properties, such as cation exchange capacity and water stable aggregates, were increased, but soil hardness was decreased by zeolite application. The porosity and temperature of soil were increased greatly by vinyl mulching. The differences between daily maximum and minimum soil temperature were large in beginning stages of crop growth, but those were decreased to $2^{\circ}C$ after mid-August. Zeolite application enhanced the plant growth and increased yields by 3-37% compare to control, also vinyl mulching brought to increase the corn yields by 17-23%. Water stable aggregates was correlated with soil hardness, and silage yields were highly correlated with porosity, air phase and water stable aggregates.

Growth, carcass traits, cecal microbial counts, and blood chemistry of meat-type quail fed diets supplemented with humic acid and black cumin seeds

  • Objective: The present study attempted to determine safe and sufficient growth promoters in poultry feeding. Methods: A total of 520 seven-day-old quail chicks were randomly allotted to eight treatment groups in a $4{\times}2$ factorial design experiment to evaluate the effect of different levels of humic acid (HA) and black cumin (BC) seed and their interactions on growth, carcass traits, gut microbes, and blood chemistry of growing quails. Quails were randomly distributed into 8 groups in a $4{\times}2$ factorial design, included 4 HA levels (0, 0.75, 1.5, and 2.25 g/kg diet) and 2 BC levels (0 or 5 g/ kg diet). Results: Increasing HA level associated with a gradual increase in final weight, feed intake and body weight gain along with an improvement in feed conversion ratio. Dietary addition of 5 g BC powder/kg diet gave similar results. The highest level of HA (2.25 g/kg diet) recorded the best values of carcass weight, breast yield, intestinal length, and intestinal weight comparing with the control and other HA levels. Total viable microbial counts decreased (p<0.05) with increasing levels of HA except the intermediate level (1.5 g/kg diet). The concentration of serum cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (excluding that 0.75 g HA) decreased (p<0.05) and high density lipoprotein increased (p = 0.034) along with increasing HA level. The interaction between the $2.25g\;HA{\times}5g$ gave the best results regarding most studied parameters. Conclusion: These findings indicated that HA combined with BC could be used as effective growth promoters, with the recommended level being 2.25 g HA+5 g BC/kg of quail diet.

Breeding of F1 Hybrid for Oriental Mustard(Brassica juncea L. Czern) Using the Cytoplasmic Male Sterile Line (웅성불임 인자를 이용한 갓(Brassica juncea L. Czern)의 F1 육종)

  • Recently, the demand for new cultivar of oriental mustard(Brassica juncea) is increased as the consumption of oriental mustard has increased dramatically in the market due to Kimchi is attracting the world's attention. However, absence of seed supply system can cause many problems including inbreeding depression due to self seed production, deterioration of the seed purity and heterogeneity of commercial seed. To establish the $F_1$ variety breeding system of oriental mustard, pure line and inbred lines were screened from inbreeding genetic resources. Male-sterile line was also selected from breeding combinations for the quality improvement of mustard. The combining ability from(Indojasai ${\times}$ Goheungdamyang) combinations and isolation line of(MS910 ${\times}$ Japan red mustard 8 ${\times}$ Ganghwa mustard 9) was highest, thus these lines were selected as parental lines. PCR(Polymerase Chain Reaction) and gene sequence analysis revealed that the genes related to CMS(orf263, orf220, and orf288) were distributed in mitochondria. The isolated lines from this study also showed good performance in yield test and farmhouse prove test.

Improvement of Salt Accumulated Soil and Crop Growth using Coal Ash (석탄회를 이용한 염류집적 토양 개선과 작물 생육 증진)

  • BACKGROUND: Cultivation area using agricultural plastic film facilities in Korea is rapidly increasing every year; however, it accelerates the salt accumulation in soils due to repeated cultivation and excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Coal ash contains various trace elements and has high potential to be used in agricultural purposes. This research was aimed to improve the quality of salts-accumulated soils and crop growth grown in the plastic film facilities using the soil amendment derived from coal ash and zero-valent iron powder. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil amendment used in the study was manufactured using coal ash with iron powder and subjected to a typical upland soil for soil quality enhancement and two salts-accumulated soils for crop growth. After one month incubation of the salts-accumulated soils treated with the soil amendment, soil pH increased significantly and soil EC decreased by approximately 50%, compared to the control or the treatment without the soil amendment. Since the soil salts' concentration is proportional to EC, the subjected soil amendment can be proposed as an effective way to overcome soil salts accumulation in agricultural plastic film facilities. For crop growth, the length of roots and stems increased by approximately 10% and the dry weight also increased by a maximum of 75%, compared to the control. CONCLUSION: The soil amendment made from waste resources such as coal ash and zero-valent iron was found to not only be effective in improving salt-accumulated soils and crop yield but also be safe against harmful heavy metals.

A Quality Prediction Model for Ginseng Sprouts based on CNN (CNN을 활용한 새싹삼의 품질 예측 모델 개발)

  • As the rural population continues to decline and aging, the improvement of agricultural productivity is becoming more important. Early prediction of crop quality can play an important role in improving agricultural productivity and profitability. Although many researches have been conducted recently to classify diseases and predict crop yield using CNN based deep learning and transfer learning technology, there are few studies which predict postharvest crop quality early in the planting stage. In this study, a early quality prediction model is proposed for sprout ginseng, which is drawing attention as a healthy functional foods. For this end, we took pictures of ginseng seedlings in the planting stage and cultivated them through hydroponic cultivation. After harvest, quality data were labeled by classifying the quality of ginseng sprout. With this data, we build early quality prediction models using several pre-trained CNN models through transfer learning technology. And we compare the prediction performance such as learning period and accuracy between each model. The results show more than 80% prediction accuracy in all proposed models, especially ResNet152V2 based model shows the highest accuracy. Through this study, it is expected that it will be able to contribute to production and profitability by automating the existing seedling screening works, which primarily rely on manpower.
