The purpose of this study was to investigate the dyeing properties and anti-microbial ability of silk and wool fabrics dyed with Terminalia chebula Retzius(TCR) extract using two extraction solvent, hot water and methanol. Dyeing properties of fabrics were studied by investigating the characteristics of colorant, changes in dye uptake under different dyeing conditions, and by investigating color change when mordants were applied. Also, color fastness, and antimicrobial activity of dyed fabrics were estimated. Regardless of extraction solvent type, colorant showed maximum absorption wavelength at 280 nm and 578 nm, which implied that tannin was the major pigment component of TCR. Also, through FT-IR spectrum result, it was confirmed that tannin of TCR methanol extract was hydrolysable tannin. But for the hot water extract, it was only assumed that its tannin was condenced tannin. Fabric dyed with hot water solvent extract showed higher dye uptake than fabric dyed with methanol solvent extract, dye uptake increasing by higher concentration of the dye, longer dyeing time and higher dyeing temperature. And the absorption curve between TCR extract and protein fiber was shaped in the form of Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Fabric dyed without mordant was yellow in color, and when dyed with mordant, fabric showed various colors depending on mordant types except Sn. Color fastness to washing was generally fine and color fastness to light was moderate. But color fastness to rubbing and dry cleaning was outstanding. Lastly, dyed fabrics showed very good antimicrobial activity of 99.9% against Staphylococcus aureus and Kiebsiella pneumoniae.
The chromosomal sprD gene encoding Streptomyces griseus protease D (SGPD), a chymotrypsin-like protease, was disrupted in Streptomyces griseus by insertion of the neomysin-resistance gene. The production of chymotrypsin activity of sprD disruptant was not completely abolished, but delayed by 24 h, compared with that of wild-type strain. The aerial mycelial formation of sprD disruptant was retarded, and specifically the formation of spores was not observed in the central region of colonies. However, normal morphological development into spores was observed in the marginal region of colonies. In addition, the production of yellow pigment that might be dependent on A-factor was also decreased in the sprD disruptant, compared with that of the wild-type strain. Introduction of the sprD gene, which was placed on a high copy-numbered plasmid into S. griseus ${\Delta}sprD$, partially restored the ability of morphological development, and a significant level of sporulation was observed. When the overexpression vector for sprD, pWHM3-D, was introduced in S. griseus, there was no significant change in the chymotrypsin activity or colonial morphology, in contrast to Streptomyces lividans, indicating the presence of a tight regulation system for the overexpression of the sprD gene in S. griseus.

Quantum dots (QDs) have received considerable attention due to their potential role in photosensitization during photodynamic therapy. Although QDS are attractive nanomaterials due to their novel and unique physicochemical properties, concerns about their toxicity remain. We suggest a combination strategy, CdSe/ZnS QDs together with curcumin, a natural yellow pigment from turmeric, to reduce QD-induced cytotoxicity. The aim of this study was to explore a potentially effective cancer treatment: co-exposure of HL-60 cells and human normal lymphocytes to CdSe/ZnS QDs and curcumin. Cell viability, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and DNA damage induced by QDs and/or curcumin with or without ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation were evaluated in both HL-60 cells and normal lymphocytes. In HL-60 cells, cell death, apoptosis, ROS generation, and single/double DNA strand breaks induced by QDs were enhanced by treatment with curcumin and UVA irradiation. The protective effects of curcumin on cell viability, apoptosis, and ROS generation were observed in normal lymphocytes, but not leukemia cells. These results demonstrated that treatment with QD combined with curcumin increased cell death in HL-60 cells, which was mediated by ROS generation. However, curcumin acted as an antioxidant in cultured human normal lymphocytes.
We isolated a Myxobacteria strain from a soil sample obtained from Mt. Daedoon located in Choongnam, Korea. This strain, ARJ, secreted slime while swarmed on the surface of CT medium. It produced greenish yellow pigment in liquid or solid media, and the swarming edge showed green florescence under U. V. at 366 nm. It formed fruiting bodies when nutrient was exhausted, which is one of the most imkportant characteristics of Myxobacteria. The fruiting bodies did not have a stalk and consisted of naked myxospores when examined under the scanning electron microscope. These traits lead us to believe that this strain is very close to Myxococcus virescens. It showed antimicrobial activity, especially against Gram positive bacteria. Culture filtrate showed the activity but this was not due to protein. The culture filtrate also had proteolytic activity in which at least two enzymes are involved.

This study investigated the properties of the painting materials used in the temple wall paintings of the $18^{th}$ to $19^{th}$ centuries by synthetically comparing the component analysis data on the pigments used in the temple wall paintings. The study subjects analyzed from ED-XRF are the data on the 61 temple wall paintings distributed nationwide. The colors of the wall painting coloring layers are classified into seven categories: white, incanadine, yellow, red, green, blue and black color. No big geographical and temporal differences in the type of the pigments were found in the temple paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty distributed in Gyeongsangdo and Jeollado. On the other hand, there were differences in the use of a color when mixing it with other colors depending on the painted parts.
An Actinomycetes producing an anti-VRSA (vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) substance was isolated from soil. The cultural, morphological, physiological and phylogenetic analyses of an isolated strain were investigated for identification. Cultural characteristics based on ISP (International Streptomyces Project) were as follows: white aerial mycelium, yellow reverse side, and good growth on various medium. Also, the isolate did not produce the soluble pigment. Morphological characteristics were showed cylindrical spore chain and smooth spore surface by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). Physiological characteristics were showed LL-type by DAP isomer analysis and detected glycine, glutamic acid and alanine. A phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA provided a clue that the isolated strain was actually a member of the genus Streptomyces, because the determined sequence exhibited a higher homology with Streptomyces echinatus. The isolate was identified to be a genus of Streptomyces sp.. The optimal culture conditions for the maximum production of anti-VRSA substance by Streptomyces sp. were attained in a culture medium composed of $2.0\%$ (w/v) glucose, and $0.4\%$ (w/v) yeast extract. The anti-VRSA substance was highly produced after 5 days of culture. Optimal pH and temperature conditions for the production of anti-VRSA substance were pH 7.0 and $28^{\circ}C$, respectively.
This manuscript reports on compared color evolution about phase transformation of ${\alpha}-FeOOH@SiO_2$ and ${\beta}-FeOOH@SiO_2$ pigments. Prepared ${\alpha}$-FeOOH and ${\beta}$-FeOOH were coated with silica for enhancing thermal properties and coloration of both samples. To study phase and color of ${\alpha}$-FeOOH and ${\beta}$-FeOOH, we prepared nano sized iron oxide hydroxide pigments which were coated with $SiO_2$ using tetraethylorthosilicate and cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide as a surface modifier. The silica-coated both samples were calcined at high temperatures (300, 700 and $1000^{\circ}C$) and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color parameter measurements, transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. The yellow ${\alpha}$-FeOOH and ${\beta}$-FeOOH was transformed to ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ with red, brown at 300, $700^{\circ}C$, respectively.

$MgF_2$/Cr/$MgF_2$, $MgF_2$/Cu/$MgF_2$ and $MgF_2$/Al/$MgF_2$ multi-layered thin films were fabricated by evaporation system. $MgF_2$ and Cr(Cu, And Al) was selected as a low refractive index material and mid reflector layer, respectively. Optical properties including color effect were systematically studied in terms of different film layer by using spectrophotometer. Experimental results were compared to the simulation result. The films consistings of $MgF_2$/Cr/$MgF_2$, $MgF_2$/Cu/$MgF_2$, $MgF_2$/Al/$MgF_2$ multi-layered thin films showed wavelength range of $430{\sim}780nm$, typically color range between greenish yellow and orange at view angle of $45^{\circ}$. It was confirmed that this experimental result was well matched with simulation result.
Physiological response of Panax ginseng var. atropurpureacaulo (purple stem variety, Pg) to light was reviewed through old literatures and recent experiments. Canopy structure, growth, pigment, leaf anatomy, disease occurence, transpiration, photosynthesis (PS), leaf saponin, photoperiodism and nutrient uptake were concerned. P. ginseng var. xanthocarpus (yellow berry variety, Px) and Panax quinquefolius(Pq) were compared with Pg if possible. Compensation point(Cp) increased with increase of light and ranged from 110 to 150 at $20^{\circ}C$ but from 140 to 220 at $30^{\circ}C$ with 4 to 15 Klux indicating occurence of light and temperature-dependent high photorespiration. Characteristics of Korea ginseng to hate high temperature was well accordance with an observation 2000 years ago. Korea ginseng showed lower Cp and appeared to be more tolerant to high light intensity and temperature than American sheng although the latter showed greater PS, stomata frequency and conductance, chlorophyll and carotenoids. Px showed lower PS than Pg probably due to higher Cp. Total leaf saponin was higher in leaves grown under high light. Ratio or diol saponin and triol saponin(PT/PD) decreased with increase of light intensity during growing mainly due to decrease of ginsenoside $Rg_1$ but increase of ginsenoside Rd. Leaves of Pg and Px had $Rg_1$ but no $Rb_3$ which was only found as much as $20\%$ of total in Pq leaves, and decreased with increase of light intensity. Re increased in Pg and Px but decreased in Pq with increase of light. PT/PD in leaf ranged 1.0-1.5 in Pg and Px but around 0.5 in Pq. Korea ginseng has Yang characteristics(tolerant to high light and temperature), cultured under Eum(shade) condition and long been used for Yang efficacy (to build up energy) while Pq was quite contrary. Traditional low light $intensity(3-8\%)$ for Korea ginseng culture appeared to be strongly related to historical unique quality. Effect of light quality and photoperiodism was not well known. Experiences are long but scientific knowledge is short for production and quality assessment of ginseng. Recent scientific knowledge of ginseng should learn wisdom from old experiences.
Physiological effects of curcumin, major yellow-colored pigment in tumeric (Curcuma longa L.), extracted by traditional extracting methods, ethanol and hot-water extractions, and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) using supercritical carbon dioxide as new extracting method. Antioxidative activity of ethanol extract was higher than those of SFE and hot-water extracts. Results of Ames mutagenicity test on SFE, ethanol, and hot-water extracts revealed no mutagen in the extracts. Antimutagenicity rates of SFE, ethanol, and hot-water extracts against direct mutagen, 2-nitrofluorene (2-NF), were 20.1, 9.3, and 15.2%, respectively. Antimutagenicity rate of SFE extract against TA98 derived from indirect mutagen, 2-acetamidofluorene (2-AF), was 12.2%, whereas none was observed in ethanol and hot-water extracts. Nitrite-scavenging ability of SFE extract was higher than those of ethanol and not-water extracts.
