This paper develops a computer model of a cabover type large truck for estimating the effects of the mounted method of frame on handling performance. The computer model considers two mounted methods of frame; flange mounted and web mounted. Frame is modeled by finite elements using MSC/NASTRAN in order to consider the flexibility of frame. The reliability of the developed computer model is verified by comparing the actual vehicle test results with the simulation results. The actual vehicle test is performed in a double lane change course, and lateral acceleration, yaw rate, and roll angle are measured. To estimate the effects of the mounted method of frame on handling performance, simulations are performed with the flange mounted and web mounted frame. Simulation results show that the web mounted frame's variations of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate are larger than the flange mounted frame's variations, especially in the high test velocity and the second part of the double lane course. Also, simulation results show that the web mounted frame's tendencies of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate advance the flange mounted frame's tendencies, especially in the high test velocity and the second part of the double lane course.

Availability of the climbing angle information is crucial for the intelligent vehicle system. However, the climbing angle information can't be measured with the sensor mounted on the vehicle. In this paper, climbing angle estimation system is proposed. First, longitudinal acceleration obtained from gyro-sensor is compared with the actual longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle. If the vehicle is in yawing motion, actual longitudinal acceleration can't be approximated from time derivative of wheel speed, because lateral velocity and yaw rate affect actual longitudinal acceleration. Wheel speed and yaw rate can be obtained from the sensors mounted on the vehicle, but lateral velocity can't be measured from the sensor. Therefore, lateral velocity is estimated using unknown input observer with nonlinear tire model. Simulation results show that the compensated results using lateral velocity and yaw rate show better performance than uncompensated results.

This paper considers a fault tolerant control problem for a spacecraft using wheels which are momentum exchanging devices. The control of a satellite with only two healthy wheels has been studied and its result has been presented. Two different configurations have been considered. When the yaw rate cannot be controlled directly by any control input, the desired yaw rate can be obtained by using the roll rate as a pseudo control. As a result, all three angular speeds have been stabilized, and two attitude angles including pitch and yaw have been controlled to converge to the desired values.
In this study, an integrated motor control algorithm for an in-wheel electric vehicle is suggested. It consists of slip control that controls the in-wheel motor torque using the road friction coefficient and slip ratio; yaw rate control that controls the in-wheel motor torque according to the road friction coefficient and the yaw rate error; and velocity control that controls the vehicle velocity by a weight factor based on the road friction coefficient and the yaw rate error. A co-simulator was developed, which combined the vehicle performance simulator based on MATLAB/Simulink and the vehicle model of CarSim. Based on the co-simulator, a human-in-the-loop simulation environment was constructed, in which a driver can directly control the steering wheel, the accelerator pedal, and the brake pedal in real time. The performance of the integrated motor control algorithm for the in-wheel electric vehicle was evaluated through human-in-the-loop simulations.

This paper presents reconstruction analysis of vehicle trajectory using records of a developed black box, and results of validation tests. For reconstruction of vehicle trajectory, the black box records the longitudinal and lateral accelerations and yaw-rate of vehicle during a pre-defined time period before and after the accident. One 2-axis accelerometer is used for measuring accelerations, and one vibrating structure type gyroscope is used for measuring yaw-rate of vehicle. The vehicle's planar trajectory can be reconstructed by integrating twice accelerations along longitudinal and lateral directions with yaw-rate values. However, there may be many kinds of errors in sensor measurements. The causes of errors are as follows: mis-alignment, low frequency offset drift, high frequency noise, and projecting 3-dimensional motion into 2-dimensional motion. Therefore, some procedures are taken for error compensation. In order to evaluate the reliability and the accuracy of trajectory reconstruction results, the black box was mounted on a passenger car. The vehicle was driven and tested along various specified lanes. Through the tests, the accuracy and usefulness of the reconstruction analysis have been validated.

This study is to develop and evaluate an AFS and an ARS controllers to enhance lateral stability of a vehicle. A sliding mode control (SMC) and a fuzzy logic control (FLC) methods are applied to calculate the desired additional steering angle of AFS equipped vehicle or desired rear steer angle of ARS equipped vehicle. To validate AFS and ARS systems, an eight degree of freedom, nonlinear vehicle model and an ABS controllers are also used. Several road conditions are used to test the performances. The results showed that the yaw rate of the AFS and the ARS vehicle followed the reference yaw rate very well within the adhesion limit. However, the AFS improves the lateral stability near the limit compared with the ARS. Because the SMC and the FLC show similar vehicle responses, performance discrimination is small. On split-${\mu}$ road, the AFS and the ARS vehicle had enhanced the lateral stability.
In this study, to investigate the dangerous driving on the curves, a driving test was performed in 10 km from Jinan and to Jeonju(Bugui Gas Station~Whasim Intersection), on the national highway No. 26. For the dangerous driving felt by the driver when a driver is driving on the curves, lateral acceleration and yaw rate were analyzed. And then, the reference value of lateral acceleration and yaw rate was computed. Through observing the driving speed and the characteristics of ordinary drivers using the applicable roads or following them as they drive, the driving test was performed again and the section exceeding the reference value set as above was computed. On the dangerous driving area, exceeding the reference value, total 10 accidents took place from 2006 till 2010, and slipping caused by speeding accounted for more than 70% of the accidents. It was concluded that the result of an analysis through recording drivers' driving characteristics, was reliable.

A surface micro machined angular rate sensor utilizing a vibrating MEMS structure on a silicon has been developed. These tuning fork angular rate sensors are extremely rugged, inherently balanced, and easy to fabricate. The device is fabricated using a temperature compensation method based on automatic gain control technique. A linearity of approximately 0.6%, limited by the on-chip electronics has been obtained with this new sensor. Tests of the sensor demonstrate that its performance is equivalent to that required for implementation of a yaw control system. Vehicle handling and safety are substantially improved using the sensor to implement yaw control.

This paper develops a 3 DOF vehicle model which includes lateral, roll and yaw motion to study a 4WS vehicle. The model is used for the simulation of a 4WS vehicle behavior, and to derive a control algorithm for rear wheel steering. This paper uses a feedforward plus feedback control scheme to compute a rear wheel steering angle. The feedforward control scheme for computing the first rear wheel steering angle uses a gain which is acquired by multiplying a proper value on a gain to maintain a zero sideslip angle. The feedback control scheme for computing the second rear wheel steering angle uses fuzzy logic and model following control scheme. A linear 2 DOF model is used as a reference model for model following control, and is derived from the developed 3 DOF model by neglecting sprung mass roll motion. A reference state variable is yaw rate, and is computed using the linear 2 DOF model. J-turn and lane change maneuver simulation are performed to show the effectiveness of the developed control scheme. The simulation results show that the 4WS vehicle with the developed control scheme has much better performance in yaw rate, lateral acceleration, roll angle, and sideslip angle than the 2WS vehicle. Also, the results show that the performance of the developed control is close to the one of an optimal control which assumes all states are perfect.
This paper presents driving path estimation algorithm for adaptive cruise control system and advanced emergency braking system using multi-sensor fusion. Through data collection, yaw rate filtering based road curvature and vision sensor road curvature characteristics are analyzed. Yaw rate filtering based road curvature and vision sensor road curvature are fused into the one curvature by weighting factor which are considering characteristics of each curvature data. The proposed driving path estimation algorithm has been investigated via simulation performed on a vehicle package Carsim and Matlab/Simulink. It has been shown via simulation that the proposed driving path estimation algorithm improves primary target detection rate.
