Effect of Reaction Conditions on the Particle Properties for Synthesis of Stabilized Zirconia by Modified Oxalate Method

  • Nanocrystalline powder of zirconia stabilized with 8 mol% yttria (YSZ) has been synthesized through oxalate process using $ZrOCl_2{\cdot}8H_2O$ and $Y(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ as starting materials. Understanding of the characteristic changes of YSZ powder as a function of processing conditions is crucial in developing dense and porous microstructures required for fuel cell applications. In this research, microstructure change, surface area, particle shape and particle size were measured as a function of different processing conditions such as calcination temperature, stirring speed and concentration of starting materials. The resultant crystallite sizes were calculated by XRD-LB (X-Ray Diffraction Line-Broadening) method, BET method, and morphology of the crystal was observed in TEM and FE-SEM. The TEM examination showed that the powder synthesized with 0.7 M of YSZ concentration had a spherical morphology with sizes ranging from 20 to 40 nm. However, the powder was gradually aggregated above 1.0 M of YSZ concentration with the aggregation being intensified as the YSZ concentration was increased.

  • 이트리아 안정화 지르코니아(yttria stabilized zirconia, YSZ)를 전해질로 선정하여 소결조건에 따른 열적 안정성과 전기적인 특성을 분석하였다. SEM사진으로 소결온도가 증가할수록 입자가 커지므로 상대적으로 기공은 줄어드는 것을 보였고 입자크기에 따른 영향을 확인하였다. 전기적 특성을 알아보고자 2단자법(2-probe method)으로 $800\~1000^{\circ}C$의 오도에서 교류 임피던스 측정을 통하여 전해질 내의 저항과 전기전도도 측정으로 입자 내부 저항 및 전기적 성능을 평가하였다. 소결온도가 $1400^{\circ}C$일 때 건식법과 습식법에서 밀도는 각각 6.13, 6.25 $g/cm^3$이며, 상대밀도는 각각 98, 99$\%$였다. 소결온도가 올라갈수록 저항은 낮아지고, 전도도는 커지는 것을 확인할 수 있으며, 건식 및 습식법으로 제작한 전해질의 전기전도도는 $10000^{\circ}C$에서 각각 $8.8\times10^{-2},\;11\times10^{-2}$ S/cm이었다.

Use of High-Temperature Gas-Tight Electrochemical

  • By using a gas-tight electrochemical cell, we can perform high-temperature coulometric titration and measure electronic transport properties to determine the elecronic defect structure of metal oxides. This technique reduces the time and expense required for conventional thermogravimetric measurements. The components of the gas-tight coulometric titration cell are an oxygen sensor, Pt/yttria stabilitized zirconia(YSZ)/Pt, and an encapsulated metal oxide sample. Based on cell design, both transport and thermodynamic measurements can be performed over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure ($pO_2=10^{-35}$ to 1 atm). This paper describes the high-temperature gas-tight electrochemical cells used to determine electronic defect structures and transport properties for pure and doped-oxide systems, such as YSZ, doped and pure ceria $(Ca-CeO_2 \;and\; CeO_2)$, copper oxides and copper-oxide-based ceramic superconductors, transition metal oxides, $SrFeCo_{0.5}O_x,\; and \;BaTiO_2$.

50μm급 이트리아 안정화 지르코니아 비드의 미세구조 및 마모 조건에 따른 마모율 분석 (Analysis of Attrition Rate of 50μm Size Y2O3 Stabilized Zirconia Beads with Different Microstructure and Test Conditions)

  • This study analyzes the mechanical properties, including the attrition rate, of $50{\mu}m$ size yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) beads with different microstructures and high-energy milling conditions. The yttria distribution in the grain and grain-boundary of the fully sintered beads relates closely to Vickers hardness and the attrition rate of the YSZ beads. Grain size, fractured surfaces, and yttrium distribution are analyzed by electronic microscopes. For standardization and a reliable comparison of the attrition rate of zirconia beads with different conditions, Zr content in milled ceramic powder is analyzed and calculated by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer(XRF) instead of directly measuring the weight change of milled YSZ beads. The beads with small grain sizes sintered at lower temperature exhibit a higher Vickers hardness and lower attrition rate. The attrition rate of $50{\mu}m$ YSZ beads is measured and compared with the various materials properties of ceramic powders used for high-energy milling. The attrition rate of beads appears to be closely related to the Vickers hardness of ceramic materials used for milling, and demonstrates more than a 10 times higher attrition rate with Alumina(Hv ~1650) powder than $BaTiO_3$ powder (Hv ~315).

  • SOFC용 Ni-YSZ(Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) composite powders를 glycine nitrate process를 이용하여 만들었다. $ZrO(NO_3)_2{\cdot}2H_2O$, $Y(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$, $Ni(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$와 glycine을 출발원료로 하였으며 Ni의 부피비를 변화시켜 각기 그들의 소결 및 환원 특성을 알아보았다. Ni과 YSZ 상들이 상호 연결된 균질하게 분포된 다공성 미세구조를 관찰 할 수 있었으며 Ni의 첨가량에 따라 가공률이 민감하게 변화함을 알 수 있었다. 35 vol% 이상의 Ni를 함유한 Ni-YSZ cermet가 SOFC용 전극재료로 사용되는데 필요한 30% 이상의 공극을 갖는 조성임을 알 수 있었다.

서스펜션 진공 플라즈마 용사법을 통한 YSZ 코팅의 형성 (Formation of YSZ Coatings Deposited by Suspension Vacuum Plasma Spraying)

  • As increasing thermal efficiency of the gas turbine, the performance improvement of thermal barrier coatings is also becoming important. Ytrria stabilized zirconia(YSZ) is the most popular materials for ceramic top coating because of its low thermal conductivity. In order to enhance the performance of thermal barrier coatings for hot sections in the gas turbine, suspension plasma spraying was developed in order to feed nano-sized powders. YSZ coatings formed by suspension plasma spraying showed better performance than YSZ coatings due to its exclusive microstructure. In this research, two YSZ coatings were deposited by suspension vacuum plasma spraying at 400 mbar and 250 mbar. Microstructures of YSZ coatings were analyzed by scanning electron image(SEM) on each spraying conditions, respectively. Crystalline structure transformation was not detected by X-ray diffraction. Thermal conductivity of suspension vacuum plasma sprayed YSZ coatings were measured by laser flash analysis. Thermal conductivity of suspension vacuum plasma sprayed YSZ coatings containing horizontally oriented nano-sized pores and vertical cracks showed $0.6-1.0W/m{\cdot}K$, similar to thermal conductivity of YSZ coatings formed by atmospheric plasma spraying.

칼슘이 첨가된 란탄-아크롬산 염과 이트리아 안정화 지르코니아 계면간의 반응 (Reaction between Calcium-doped Lanthanum Chromite and Yttria Stabilized Zirconia)

  • Pechini방법으로 제조한 La$_{0.8}$Ca$_{0.2}$CrO$_3$CLC소결체와 La$_{0.8}$Ca$_{0.2}$CrO$_3$CLC-Green체를 YSZ에 적층한 후 온도의 함수로 계면에서의 미세구조와 성분이동 등의 거동을 고찰하였다. CLC-G/CLC와 CLC/YSZ계면에서의 CLC면은 반응온도에 상관없이 XRD 관찰에서 주상은 La$_{1-x}$ Ca$_{x}$CrO$_3$그리고 CLC와 반응하지 않은 YSZ면의 결정 상은 cubic-ZrO$_2$으로 각각 나타났다. CLC/YSZ반응 계면의 성분이동은 Zr > La>>Cr>>>Ca 순이었으며, 온도에 따른 개개 성분의 이동도 차이는 크지 않았다. CLC/YSZ계면간의 결합은 계면성분간의 과다한 성분이동 없이 현 연구의 온도전체에 걸쳐 가능한 것으로 나타났다. CLC-G/CLC간의 SEM미세구조는 결합 면을 경계로 저온에서는 결정의 입자크기 차이를 보이다가 온도가 증가할수록 균일화되는 경향을 보였다.였다. 보였다.였다.

Deposition of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia by the Thermal CVD Process

  • Yttria stabilized zirconia(YSZ) films were deposited on porous NiO substrates and quartz plates by the thermal CVD using $ZrCl_4, YCl_3$ as precursors, and $O_2$ as a reactive gas at atmospheric pressure. The evaporation temperature of $ZrCl_4$ was varied from $250^{\circ}C$ to $550^{\circ}C$ while the temperatures of $YCl_3$ and the substrate were varied from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1030^{\circ}C$. As the evaporation temperature of $ZrCl_4$ increased, the deposition rate of $ZrO_2$ decreased, contrary to our expectation. As a result of the decreased deposition rate of $ZrO_2$, the yttria content increase. The high evaporation temperature of $ZrCl_4$ makes the well-faceted crystal while the low evaporation temperature leads to the cauliflower-shaped structure. The dependence of the evaporation temperature on the growth rate and the morphological evolution was interpreted by the charged cluster model.

이트리아 안정화 지르코니아 바인더에 의한 열전지 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical Properties of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Binder for Thermal Batteries)

  • Thermal batteries, reserve power source, is activated by melting of molten salt at the temperature range of $350{\sim}550^{\circ}C$. To immobile the molten state electrolyte when the thermal battery is activated, the binder must be added in electrolyte. Usually, molten salts include 30~40 wt% of MgO binder to ensure electrical insulation as well as safety. However, the conventional MgO binder tends to increase ionic conductive resistance and thus the inclusion of the binder increases the total impedance of the battery. This paper mainly focused on the study of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as an alternative binder for molten salt. The chemical stability between the molten salt and YSZ is measured by XRD and DSC. And the sufficient path for ionic conduction on molten salt could be confirmed by the enhanced wetting behavior and the enlarged pore size of YSZ. The electrochemical properties were analyzed using single cell tests so that it showed the outstanding performance than that using MgO binder.

Temperature Dependence of the Deposition Behavior of Yttria-stabilized Zirconia CVD Films: Approach by Charged Cluster Model

  • Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) films were deposited with varying temperatures of ZrCl$_4$between 250~55$0^{\circ}C$ with YCl$_3$and the substrate at 100$0^{\circ}C$. Nanoamperes per square centimeter of the electric current were measured in the reactor during deposition and the current increased with increasing evaporation temperature of ZrCl$_4$. The zirconia nanometer size clusters were captured on the grid membrane near the substrate during the CVD process and observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The deposition rate decreased with increasing evaporation temperature of ZrCl$_4$. A cauliflower-shaped structure was developed at 25$0^{\circ}C$ then gradually changed to a faceted-grain structure above 35$0^{\circ}C$. Dependence of the growth rate and the morphological evolution on the evaporation temperature of ZrCl$_4$was approached by the charged cluster model.
