  • This work was performed to investigate the effect of a split injection on spray characteristics of fuel sprays injected from a common rail system. In order to analyze the spray behavior and atomization characteristics at various rates of split injections, the injection durations of pilot and main injections were varied in experiments. The injection rate of split injection was measured to study the effect of the pilot injection on the main injection. By using a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera, the development of the injected spray was visualized at various elapsed time from the start of injection. The microscopic characteristics such as SMD and axial velocity were analyzed by using a phase Doppler particle analyzer system. The results indicate that the ambient gas flow generated by the pilot injection affects the behavior of main spray, whereas the effect of pressure variation on the main spray is little. The spray tip penetration of a main spray with pilot injection is longer than that of the single injection by the effect of ambient gas flow. Also the main spray produces larger droplets than the pilot spray due to a small relative velocity between the droplets and ambient gas.

  • This is a research to apply 1310nm single-mode optical fiber to a temperature sensor. The existing study of optical fiber sensor is complicated because it was made with various equipment. To vary scattering, the variation of optical frequency is measured by using Bragg(lattice) or pulse generator and also bulk system is created by YAG laser but there were some difficulties creating experimental environment and it was a problem that the stability of measured data was low. The temperature sensor system using the suggested sBs(stimulated Brillouin scattering:sBs) from this research is much more simplified straight-line system. To improve the trust and accuracy of noises from optical frequency and unclear results, it was analysed by using Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm. we tried to get more correct data than existing system. sBs measure that optical frequency changed due to the variation of temperature. The analyzed change rate of outcome by Fuzzy theory is 1.1 MHz.

  • Flow characteristics inside a blower unit of an automotive HVAC module were investigated experimentally using a high-resolution PIV technique. The PIV system consists of a 2-head Nd:YAG laser, a high-resolution CCD camera, optics and a synchronizer. The prototype siroco-fan with forward-curved blades was operated under the same condition of real car. The scroll casing was made transparently for capturing clear flow images. The time-averaged velocity fields were measured in three cross sections. Flow is accelerated with going toward the outer wall of scroll due to centrifugal force and large pressure gradient formed in the region between the fan and the outer casing wall. The presence of the cut-off region and diffusing duct of fan outlet influences largely the flow structure inside the blower unit.

  • Dimethyl Ether(DME) is an alternative fuel for diesel engine, it is renewable and offers potential reductions in emissions. This work was conducted to figure out the macroscopic behavior and the atomization characteristics of DME using a common-rail injection system. The macroscopic behavior was visualized with the spray visualization system composed of a Nd;YAG laser and an ICCD camera. The atomization characteristics were investigated in terms of axial mean velocity, Sauter mean diameter(SMD) and droplet distributions obtained from a phase Doppler particle analyzer(PDPA) system. In this study, it was revealed that the macroscopic behavior and the atomization characteristics of DME are similar compared with commercial diesel fuel. However, DME fuel has a shorter spray tip penetration and a small SMD due to the effect of evaporation characteristics.

  • In order to obtain velocity profile of blood flow with high spatial resolution, a micro PIV technique consisted of a fluorescent microscope, double-pulsed YAG laser, cooled CCD camera was applied to in-vitro blood flow experiment through a micro round tube of a diameter $100{\mu}m$. Velocity distributions of blood flow for rabbit were obtained. The viscosity profiles for shear rate were found at flowing condition. To provide hemorheological characteristics of blood flow, the viscosities for shear rate were evaluated. The viscosity of blood also steeply increase by decreasing shear rate resulting in Non-Newtonian flow, especially in low shear rate region caused by RBC rheological properties. The results show typical characteristics of Non-Newtonian characteristics from the results of velocity profile and viscosity for blood flow. From the inflection points, cell free layer and two-phase flow consisted with plasma and suspensions including RBCs can be separated.

  • This paper reports on electrical characterization by IDC pattern using BST$(Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}TiO_3)$ thin film. BST thin films have been deposited on $Al_2O_3$ Substrates by Nd-YAG pulsed laser deposition with a 355nm wavelength at $700^{\circ}C$. The post deposition annealing at $750^{\circ}C$ in flowing $O_2$ atmosphere for I hours. The capacitance of IDC patterns have been measured from 1 to 10 GHz as a function fo electric field (${\pm}40$ KV/cm) at room temperature using interdiigitated Au electrodes deposited on top of BST. The IDC patterns have three type of fingers number. For the finger paris was increased onto $Al_2O_3$, the capacitance increased. The capacitance of 5 pairs finger was 0.3pF and 10 pairs finger was 0.9pF.

  • The turbulent flows in a tunnel mock-up($10L{\times}0.5W{\times}0.25H$ m3 : scale reduction 1/20) with rectangular cross section were investigated. The instantaneous velocity fields of Re = 49,029, 89,571 were measured by the 2-D PIV system which is consisted of double pulsed Nd:Yag laser and the tracer particles in the straight-duct mock-up where the flows were fully developed. The mean velocity profiles were taken from the ensemble averages of 1,000 instantaneous velocity fields. Simultaneously, numerical simulations(RANS) were performed to compare with experimental data using STREAM code. Non-linear eddy viscosity model (NLEVM : Abe-Jang-Leschziner Eddy Viscosity Model) was employed to resolve the turbulent flows in the duct. The calculated mean velocity profiles were well compared with PIV results. In the log-law profiles, the experimental data were in good agreement with numerical simulations all the way to the wake region except the viscous sub-layer (near wall region).

  • In order to investigate flow characteristics of chicken blood in a micro tube of 100$\mu$m in diameter, in-vitro experiments were carried out using a micro-PIV technique. The micro-PIV system consists of a microscope, 2-head Nd:YAG laser, 12 bit cooled CCD camera and a delay generator. Chicken blood with 40% hematocrit was supplied into a micro tube using a syringe pump. The blood flow shows clearly the cell free layer near the tube wall and its thickness is increased with increasing the flow speed. The hemorheological characteristics of chicken blood, including shear rate and shear stress were estimated from the PIV velocity field data obtained. Since the aggregation index of chicken blood is less than 50% of human blood, non-Newtonian flow characteristics of chicken blood are smaller than those of human blood. As the flow rate increases, the degree of flatness in the velocity profile at the center region is decreased and the parabola-shaped shear stress distribution becomes to have a linear profile. Under the same flow rate, chicken blood shows higher shear stress, compared with human blood.

  • The sloshing flows in the cargo tank model of a ship are measured by PIV and are analyzed with the results. The measurement system is consisted of a Nd-Yag laser(120mJ, 15Hz). two cameras($1k\;{\times}\;1k$) and a host computer. Four experimental cases were tested for the tank model. in which swaying motions are made by 6 DOF-motion platform. The amplitudes of swaying are 9.76mm and 29.29mm, and the frequencies are 0.633Hz and 0.828Hz. The measurement regions are the vertical plane 50mm away from the front wall of the tank where a pump tower is installed. It was verified that the flow patterns of the sloshing are similar each other when the swaying amplitudes are similar.

  • Purpose: The goal of this study was to investigate the feasibility for the early diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis by the reconstruction of three-dimensional photoacoustic imaging with a tissue phantom. Methods: Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (l = 532 nm) was applied to a tissue phantom to generate photoacoustic waves, and the acquired photoacoustic signals at different positions around the sample were used to recombine the distribution of the optical absorption and the images were subsequently generated through a reconstruction algorithm. Results: From the acquired photoacoustic signals, the surface andinner core of the phantom was clearly distinguished. Furthermore, the back-projection algorithm was able to reconstruct two-dimensional and three-dimensional photoacoustic images that contained the optical absorption property information of the tissue phantom. Conclusion: The results indicate that the photoacoustic imaging technique has many advantages such as high optical contrast and high acoustic resolution. The acquired images can be used for the early diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis by the structural information obtained from the region of interest.
