  • In this paper, the a-Diamond films were synthesized using filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS), FVAS was composed of a torus structure with bending angle of 60 degree. The radius of torus was 266 mm, the radius of plasma duct was 80 mm and the total length was 600 mm. The magnet parts were composed of one permanent magnet and five solenoid magnets. The plasma duct was electrically isolated from the ground so that a bias voltage could be applied. The baffles inside plasma duct were installed in order to prevent the recoil effect of macro-particles. Cathode was made of graphite with 80 mm in diameter. The effects of solenoid magnet on plasma extraction were investigated by computer simulation and experiment using Taguchi's methode. The source and extraction magnet affected the arc stabilization. The extraction beam current was maximized with low value of the source magnet current and high value of the filtering magnet current. The beam current density was 3.2 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and average deposition rate was 5 $\AA$/sec when the currents of arc discharge, source, extraction, bending, deflection and outlet magnet were 30 A, 1 A, 3 A, 5 A, 5 A, and 5 A, respectively. The beam current density and the efficiency of beam transportation were increased with the positive bias voltage of the plasma duct.

  • The pullout behavior of large-diameter steel pipe piles(diameter = 2,500mm, length = 38~40m), which were designed as compression piles but used as reaction piles during a static compression load test on a pile(diameter = 1,000m, length = 40m), was investigated. The steel pipe piles were driven by 20m into a marine deposit and weathered soil layer and then socketed by 10m into underlying weathered and soft rock layers. The sockets and pipe were filled with reinforced concrete. The steel pipe and concrete in the steel pipe zone and concrete and rebars in the socketed zone were fully instrumented to measure strains in each zone. The pullout deformations of the reaction pile heads were measured by LVDTs. Over the course of the study, a maximum uplift deformation of 7mm was measured in the heads of reaction piles when loaded to 10MN, and 1mm of residual uplift deflection was measured. In the reaction piles, about 83% and about 12% of the applied pullout loads were transferred in the weathered rock layer and in the soft rock layer, respectively. Also, at an uplift force of 10MN, shear stresses due to the uplift in the weathered rock layer md soft rock layer were developed as much as 125.3kPa and 61.8kPa, respectively. Thus, the weathered rock layer should be utilized as resisting layer in which frictional farce could be mobilized greatly.

  • Two way grid single-layer domes are of great advantage in fabrication and construction because of the simple fact that they have only four members at each junction. But, from a point of view of mechanics, the rectangular latticed pattern gives rise to a nonuniform rigidity-distribution in the circumferential direction. If the equivalent rigidity is considered in the axial direction of members, the in-plane equivalent shearing rigidity depends only on the in-plane bending rigidity of members and its value is very small in comparison to that of the in-plane equivalent stretching rigidity. It has a tendency to decrease buckling -strength of dome considerably by external force. But it is possible to increase buckling strength by the use of roofing covering materials connected to framework. In a case like this, shearing rigidity of roofing material increases buckling strength of the overall structure and can be designed economically from the viewpoint of practice. Therefore, the purpose of this paper, in Lamella dome and rectangular latticed dome that are a set of 2-way grid dome, is to clarify the effects of roofing covering materials for increasing of buckling strength of overall dome. Analysis method is based on FEM dealing with the geometrically nonlinear deflection problems. The conclusion were given as follows: 1. In case of Lamella domes which have nearly equal rigidity in the direction of circumference, the rigidity of roofing covering materials does not have a great influence on buckling-strength, but in rectangular latticed domes that has a clear periodicity of rigidity, the value of its buckling strength has a tendency to increase considerably with increasing rigidity of roofing covering materials 2. In case of rectangular latticed domes, as rise-span-ratio increases, models which is subjected to pressure -type-uniform loading than vertical-type-uniform loading are higher in the aspects of the increasing rate of buckling- strength according to the rate of shear reinforcement rigidity, but in case of Lamella dome, the condition of loading and rise-span-ratio do not have a great influence on the increasing rate of buckling strength according to the rate of shear reinforcement rigidity.

  • Track system and periodic live load are characteristics of railway bridges. In the design and construction of railway bridge, periodic live load increases the importance of dynamic behavior. And It is well known that behavior of railway bridge may be affected by track system in real bridge. Through experimental study, static and dynamic behaviors were investigated. Deflection and stress due to bending moment were measured, the location of neutral axis of each section, natural frequency, damping ratio were analyzed for each three track systems - girder only, installed ballast track system and installed concrete slab track system. According to measured values for the each type of track system, concrete track system increases the stiffness of bridge by 50%, and ballast system does by 7%, dynamic responses of structure change linearly with the magnitude of load and location of neutral axis of each sections varies with each track system. Damping ratio is almost equal without and with track. Therefore, the effects of track system on the integral behaviors of railway bridge can not be ignored in the design of bridge, especially in the case of concrete slab track system. So study of the quantitative analysis method for effects of track system must be performed.

  • The flexural behavior tests of UHPC segmental Box girder which has 160MPa compressive strength and 15.4m length were carried out. The test variables are area of prestressing wires, volume fraction of steel fibers and longitudinal reinforcing bars in upper flange and web. PS tendons which has 32 strands of 15.2mm diameter in lower flange, 24 strands and 14 strands in lower flange were arranged and volume fraction of 2%, 1.5% and 1.0% is used in box girder concrete. UHPFRC box girder which has 32 strands in lower flange showed the over reinforcement and brittle behavior. UHPFRC box girder which has 24 strands showed the similar peak load as 32 strands girder and ductile behavior as large deflection. UHPFRC box girder which has 14 strands showed half of the peak load of 24 strands box girder and ductile behavior. After the application of the formular for the reinforcement index to the behavior of the UHPFRC box girders, reinforcement index does not determine the characteristic of behavior of UHPFRC box girder exactly. So the index should consider the dimension precisely and modify the reference value corresponding to the 0.005 strain of the prestressing strands.

  • The current research reviewed the design conditions that would maximize the efficiency of the hybrid collector that combines in one unit "cyclone-inertial impaction-bag filter". The computational analysis for the shape of cyclone entry predicts that a design that installs the guide vane at the entry of the tangential type cyclone brings a high-rpm and powerful vortex, very effective in promoting the deflection of coarse particles from the streamline at the cyclone. As the lower part of the cyclone is venturi-shaped, however, a strong flow downward of 4 to 5 m/sec persists through the lower part of the hopper, revealing the likely reentrainment of collected dust. And the removal of the venturi at the lower part of the cyclone would solve the problem of the reentrainment of collected dust. The acceleration of the flow velocity through the adjustment of the gap of the collision baffle would increase the effect of collision, but as the interference with the dust separation is expected, the original design should be kept for the baffle.

  • The LCD frame is an important part which supports the BLU of medium/large sized TFT-LCD. To produce it efficiently, it is necessary to achieve the molding process improvement from 1 cavity to 2 cavity system. Because 2 cavity mold is compact and its hot-runner zone is broadened, it is difficult to control the temperature on the mold. In this study, injection molding analysis on the frame in 2 cavity process with FEA(Finite Element Analysis) software is carried out to estimate its quality. The calculated injection molding pressures and maximum deflection in 1 and 2 cavity processes are 41.13 MPa and 1.62 mm, 40.49 MPa and 1.66 mm respectively. The measured maximum flexure load and surface roughness of the left and right frame of 2 cavities are 209 N and 0.08 ${\mu}m$, 193 N and 0.10 ${\mu}m$ while those in 1 cavity are 140 N and 0.13 ${\mu}m$. Thermal image shows that the maximum standard deviation of the temperature on left and right side of 2 cavity mold is $1.23^{\circ}C$. The simulation and measurement results show that the quality of the frame in 2 cavity injection molding process as a whole is not worse than that of 1 cavity system. But maximum flexure loads of the frame in 2 cavity process are far greater than that in 1 cavity process.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of size and depth of cavities on the pavement failure using the full-scale accelerated pavement testing. METHODS : A full-scale testbed was constructed by installing the artificial cavities at a depth of 0.3 m and 0.7 m from the pavement surface for accelerated pavement testing. The cavities were made of ice with a dimension of 0.5 m*0.5m*0.3m, and the thickness of asphalt and base layer were 0.2 m and 0.3 m, respectively. The ground penetrating radar and endoscope testing were conducted to determine the shape and location of cavities. The falling weight deflectometer testing was also performed on the cavity and intact sections to estimate the difference of structural capacity between the two sections. A wheel loading of 80 kN was applied on the pavement section with a speed of 10 km/h in accelerated pavement testing. The permanent deformation was measured periodically at a given number of repetitions. The correlation between the depth and size of cavities and pavement failure was investigated using the accelerated pavement testing results. RESULTS : It is found from FWD testing that the center deflection of cavity section is 10% greater than that of the intact section, indicating the 25% reduction of modulus in subbase layer due to the occurrence of the cavity. The measured permanent deformation of the intact section is approximately 10 mm at 90,000 load repetitions. However, for a cavity section of 0.7 m depth, a permanent deformation of 30 mm was measured at 90,000 load repetitions, which is three times greater than that of the intact section. At cavity section of 0.3 m, the permanent deformation reached up to approximately 90 mm and an elliptical hole occurred at pavement surface after testing. CONCLUSIONS : This study is aimed at determining the pavement failure mechanism due to the occurrence of cavities under the pavement using accelerated pavement testing. In the future, the accelerated pavement testing will be conducted at a pavement section with different depths and sizes of cavities. Test results will be utilized to establish the criteria of risk in road collapse based on the various conditions.

  • This paper presents a preliminary study to monitor the lateral behavior of pile foundation using multiplexed fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensors. In the Preliminary study, an 1.7 meter long cantilever beam with the shape of square hollow box was fabricated and tested under the static loading. Four FBG sensors were multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed into the top and bottom of the cantilever beam. The strains are directly measured from FBG sensors followed by curvature calculations based on the plane section assumption. Vertical deflections are then estimated using the regression analyses based on the geometric relationships. It has been found that excellent correlation with conventional sensing system was observed. The success of the test encourages the use of the FBG sensing system as a monitoring system for pile foundations. However, further consideration should be given in the case of the sensor malfunction for the practical purpose.

  • The use of sinusoidal corrugated web girder for the box-type girders and gable steel main frames has recently been increasing very much. The reasons are that the thin web of the girder affords a significant weight reduction compared with rolled beam and welded built-up girder, and that corrugation prevents the buckling failure of the web. Improvements of the automatic fabrication process makes mass production of the corrugated web and unit possible, and applications of this girder have been extended considerably. Thus, the research for the optimum design processer considering the production data is needed practically. For doing this research, we develope the discrete optimum structural design program in consideration of production list data for the research, and the program apply to the single girder under the uniform load and the concentrated load as numerical example. We consider objective function as minimum weight of the girder, and use slenderness ratio, stress of flanges and corrugated web, and the girder deflection as the constraint functions. And also the Genetic Algorithms is adopted to search the global minimum point by using the production list as a discrete design variable. Finally, to verify the optimality of the design, we conduct a comparison of the results of the discrete optimum design with those of the continuous one, and also analyze the characteristics of the optimum cross-section.
