  • This paper investigates the parameters that control the design of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete flexural members proportioned following the ACI 440.1R-06. It investigates the critical parameters that control the flexural design, such as the deflection limits, crack limits, flexural capacity, concrete compressive strength, beam span and cross section, and bar diameter, at various Mean-Ambient Temperatures (MAT). The results of this research suggest that the deflection and cracking requirements are the two most controlling limits for FRP reinforced concrete flexural members.

  • We provide a complete proof that there are no eigenvalues of the integral operator ${\mathcal{K}}_l$ outside the interval (0, 1/k). ${\mathcal{K}}_l$ arises naturally from the deflection problem of a beam with length 2l resting horizontally on an elastic foundation with spring constant k, while some vertical load is applied to the beam.

  • A profile shifted gear system was analyzed to select the optimum profile shift coefficient, which minimizes gear teeth deflection. Contact force and deformation overlap were calculated by means of FEM and contact theory. The deformation overlap is suggested for an effective indicator to represent the whole deformation of gear system. The optimum value of profile shift coefficients was presented with respect to the deformation of gear system.

  • This paper reviewed various methods of evaluating the toughness of fiber reinforced concrete materials by means of toughness indices and discussed the use of various multiples of first-crack deflection or first-crack secant compliance to define toughness indices. And a new method what is called effective toughness used to evaluate the toughness of steel fiber reinforced concrete. The proposed method determinded from the area below the load-deflection curve until deflection at the loading point becoms 1/150 of the span devided by the ligament area.

  • For reinforced concrete column under sustained loads, the member suffers additional lateral deflection due to creep. This deflection leads to additional bending in the member, which in turn causes the column to deflect still further. Therefore the secondary moment due to additional deflection causes an increase in primary moment and the strength of column is reduced. And also creep buckling may occur. On this study, nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete long column including crack effects is carried out and then the strength of long column is revaluated.

  • In this study, a pavement evaluation method is introduced by a case study of the measurement data obtained in Incheon International Airport. Based on the results obtained by both visual inspection and automobile inspection equipments, the pavement surface condition is evaluated and used for maintenance and rehabilitation strategy for pavement. In addition, the special attention was given to the back calculation and solution technique of E-modulus by FWD's deflection data in Pavement.

  • In this paper, a realistic launching method for railway bridge is developed. When bridge is launched, it might experience the excessive deflection. Launching method with cable-stayed scheme is developed to control the deflection. The developed method was applied to the launching of an actual bridge. This study results show that bridges can be launched with favorable deflection by the proposed method.

  • This paper provides an innovative iteration technique for the large deflection problem of annular plate. After some manipulation, the problem is reduced to a couple of ODEs (ordinary differential equation). Among them, one is derived from the plane stress problem for plate, and other is derived from the bending of plate. Since the large deflection for plate is assumed in the problem, the relevant non-linear terms appear in the resulting ODEs. The pseudo-linearization procedure is suggested to solve the problem and the nonlinear ODEs can be solved in the way for the solution of linear ODE. To obtain the final solution, it is necessary to use the iteration. Several numerical examples are provided. In the study, the assumed value for non-dimensional loading is larger than those in the available references.

  • With the ongoing development in the computer science areas of artificial intelligence and computational intelligence, researchers are able to apply them successfully in the construction industry. Given the complexities indeep beam behaviour and the difficulties in accurate evaluation of its deflection, the current study has employed the Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) as one of the modelling tools to predict deflection for high strength self compacting concrete (HSSCC) deep beams. In this study, about 3668measured data on eight HSSCC deep beams are considered. Effective input data and the corresponding deflection as output data were recorded at all loading stages up to failure load for all tested deep beams. The results of ANFIS modelling and the classical linear regression were compared and concluded that the ANFIS results are highly accurate, precise and satisfactory.

  • An extensive investigation is performed to analyze the behavior of tieback anchored wall. Finite element method is used and several case histories are collected to investigate the relationship of wall deflection, anchor unbonded length, and anchor load. The finite element method can calculate wall deflection with changing the anchor unbonded length and the anchor load. Wall deflection normalized by excavation height can be related to anchor location so that it may produce a zone chart. It is found that a different chart showing the relation of the wall deflection, the anchor load, and anchor unbonded length can be constructed. It is necessary to collect more case histories considering soil conditions and to perform FE analysis extensively with changing bonded length to extend the capability of this relation chart into practice.
