Development of 10-mN Class Hall Thruster and Its Performance Optimization through Numerical Analysis

  • A small hall thruster with a thrust of about 10 mN and a specific impulse of about 1500 s is being developed with an intent to control or maintain the orbits of small satellites. The total mass, consumed electric power and efficiency of the thruster are approximately 10 kg, 300W and 30%, respectively. The thruster system consists of a hall thruster with a cylindrical cross section, a power processing unit and a Xenon(Xe) gas feed system. Laboratory examination of the thruster performance finds that the thruster meets the design specification.

ITO와 ZnO:Al 투명전도막의 전기적 특성 및 PDP 셀의 휘도 특성 (Electrical Properties of ITO and ZnO:Al Thin Films and Brightness Characteristics of PDP Cell with ITO and ZnO:Al Transparent Electrodes)

  • 각 종 전자 디바이스의 투명전도막으로 많이 사용되는 ITO 및 ZnO:Al 박막을 스퍼터링법에 의해 제작하였다. 가스압력 및 기판온도 등의 최적조건하에서 제작된 ITO 및 ZnO:Al 박막은 각각 $1.67{\times}10^{-3}[{\Omega}-cm]$$2.2{\times}10^{-3}[{\Omega}-cm]$의 비저항율과 89.61[%] 및 90.88[%]의 가시광 영역에서의 광투과율을 나타내었다. ZnO:Al과 ITO 투명전극을 이용하여 5인치의 PDP 셀을 동일한 제조조건하에서 제작하였다. ZnO:Al의 경우 Ne(base)-Xe(8%)의 가스 혼합비, 그리고 400[Torr]의 압력조건에서 가장 잘 동작되었으며, $200{\sim}300$[V]의 인가전압 범위에서 $836[cd/m^2]$의 평균휘도를 나타내었다. 고휘도 및 저 소비전력특성을 위한 중요한 파라메타인 광효율은 전원 주파수가 $10{\sim}50[Khz]$의 범위에서 $1.2{\sim}1.6[lm/W]$정도를 나타내었으며, ITO의 경우 휘도 및 광 발생 효율은 약 10[%]정도 상승하였다.

  • The optical and electrical characteristics of plasma display panel(PDP) using the vacuum in-line sealing technology compared with the conventional sealing process in this research. This PDP consisted of MgO protecting layer by e-beam evaporation and battier rib, transparent dielectric layer, dielectric layer, and electrodes by screen printer and then sealed off on Ne-Xe(4 %) 400 Torr and 430。C. The brightness and luminous efficiency were good as the base vacuum level was higher, and it was to check the advantage of high vacuum level sealing, one of the strong points of the vacuum in-line sealing process. However, the brightness and luminous efficiency was dropped sharply because of a crack on MgO protecting layer by the difference of the expansion and contraction stress on high temperature in the vacuum states between MgO and substrate. Fortunately, the crack was prevented by MgO was deposited on higher temperature than 300。C. Finally, the PDP, was fabricated by the vacuum in-line sealing process, resulted the lower brightness than processing only the thermal annealing treatment in the vacuum chamber, but the luminous efficiency was increased by the reducing power consumption with the decreasing luminous current. The vacuum in-line sealing technology was not to need the additional thermal annealing process and could reduce the fabrication process and bring the excellent optical and electrical properties without the crack of MgO protecting layer than the conventional sealing process.

  • 소형 인공위성의 궤도천이 및 보정을 위하여 추력이 약 10 mN이고 비추력이 1500 s인 홀 방식 전기추력기를 설계하였다. 개발된 추력기는 홀 방식의 추력부, 전력공급부 및 연료 공급부로 구성되어 있고, 무게, 소모전력 및 효율은 각각 10 kg, 300 W 및 30%정도이다. 개발된 추력기 시스템에 대한 간략한 소개를 홀 방식의 추력기를 선택하게 된 배경해석과 함께 기술하였다.

  • As a driving method of AC-PDP, Address-Display Separated(ADS) driving has been widely adopted for its simple architecture and low discharge failure rate. However, a high definition like a HDTV has defect of long addressing time by reason of a number of pixels. Priming effect isn't fully sustained because of long addressing time during the address period. Therefore, it has different wall charge and luminance of each addressing time in the sustain period. In this study, we suggest a new driving waveform on the address period to improve these defects. We applied a ramp waveform, instead of a square waveform, to an address period in ADS, for operating on the AC-PDP, which used the conventional gas [He-Ne-Xe]. When the ramp waveform is applied to the address period, we experimented for uniform wall charge and the improved luminance by sustained Priming effect at each addressing time in the sustain period.

Properties of Photovoltaic Cell using ZnPc/C60 Double Layer Devices

  • It has been a long time since organic solar cells were expected as a low-cost energy-conversion device. Although practical use of them has not been achieved, technological progress continues. Morphology of the materials, organic/inorganic interface, metal cathodes, molecular packing and structural properties of the donor and acceptor layers are essential for photovoltaic response. We have fabricated solar cell devices based on zinc-phthalocyanine(ZnPc) as donor(D) and fullerene$(C_60)$ as electron acceptor(A) with doped charge transport layers, and BCP and $Alq_3$ as an exciton blocking layer(EBL). We have measured the photovoltaic characteristics of the solar cell devices using the Xe lamp as a light source. We were use of $Alq_3$ layer leads to external power conversion efficiency was $2.65\%$ at illumination intensity $100\;mW/cm^2$. Also we confirmed the optimum thickness ratio of the DA hetero-junction is about 1:2.

태양광 변환을 위한 p형 GaAs 광전극의 전기적 특성 (Electrical Properties of p-GaAs Photoelectrode for Solar Energy Conversion)

  • Photoelectrochemical properties of p-GaAs electrode have been investigated. I-V characteristic shows that the cathodic photocurrent is observed at -0.7 V vs. SCE. The photoresponse at near 870~880nm wavelength indicates that the photogenerated carriers contibuted to the observed current. The maximum converson efficiency of 35% is obtained for a Xe lamp light source at 400nm. In C-V relation, capacitance peaks appeared at the frequencies of 100Hz and 300Hz due to the activation of the interfacial states which exist at the energy level corresponding to the one-third of the GaAs band gap. The difference of about 1.1V between flatband potential (Vfb) from the Mott-Schottky method and onset voltage from I-V curve is observed due to the trap of carriers at the interfacial states in the boundary between GaAs and electrolyte. In case of WO3 deposited p-GaAs electrode, higher positive onset current and photocurent density are obtained. This can be explained by the fact that carriers are generated by light penetrated into the WO3 thin flm as well as p-GaAs substrate and then move into the electrolyte effectively.

Dual-zone reactor와 CeO2/ZrO2 Foam Device를 이용한 고온 태양열 열화학 싸이클의 수소 생산 (Hydrogen Production with High Temperature Solar Heat Thermochemical Cycle Using Dual-zone Reactor and CeO2/ZrO2 Foam Device)

  • In this study, an artificial solar simulator composed of a 2.5 kW Xe-Arc lamp and mirror reflector was used to carry out the solar thermal two step thermochemical water decomposition cycle which can produce high efficiency continuous hydrogen production. Through various operating conditions, the change of hydrogen production due to the possibility of a dual-zone reactor and heat recovery were experimentally analyzed. Based on the reaction temperature of Thermal-Reduction step and Water-Decomposition step at $1,400^{\circ}C$ and $1,000^{\circ}C$ respectively, the hydrogen production decreased by 23.2% under the power off condition, and as a result of experiments using heat recovery technology, the hydrogen production increased by 33.8%. Therefore, when a thermochemical two-step water decomposition cycle is conducted using a dual-zone reactor with heat recovery, it is expected that the cycle can be operated twice over a certain period of time and the hydrogen production amount is increased by at least 53.5% compared to a single reactor.

새로운 전극 구조에 의한 ac-PDP 효율개선에 관한 연구 (A study on the improvement of the luminous efficiency with new electrode structure in ac-PDPs)

  • A new structure is proposed to achieve a low sustaining voltage and high luminous efficacy. By measuring minimum sustaining voltage(Vs) discharge current(Ion), discharge(Ioff), and brightness of the light from a 4-inch ac-PDP, performances of the conventional structure and proposed structure are compared. When compared with the conventional structure, proposed structure showed 6.5% Vsm improvement, 22% luminance improvement and 20% light dispersion improvement at the Ne-Xe(8%) gas mixture of 400 torr.

Post Ru CMP Cleaning for Alumina Particle Removal

  • The demand for Ru has been increasing in the electronic, chemical and semiconductor industry. Chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) is one of the fabrication processes for electrode formation and barrier layer removal. The abrasive particles can be easily contaminated on the top surface during the CMP process. This can induce adverse effects on subsequent patterning and film deposition processes. In this study, a post Ru CMP cleaning solution was formulated by using sodium periodate as an etchant and citric acid to modify the zeta potential of alumina particles and Ru surfaces. Ru film (150 nm thickness) was deposited on tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) films by the atomic layer deposition method. Ru wafers were cut into $2.0{\times}2.0$ cm pieces for the surface analysis and used for estimating PRE. A laser zeta potential analyzer (LEZA-600, Otsuka Electronics Co., Japan) was used to obtain the zeta potentials of alumina particles and the Ru surface. A contact angle analyzer (Phoenix 300, SEO, Korea) was used to measure the contact angle of the Ru surface. The adhesion force between an alumina particle and Ru wafer surface was measured by an atomic force microscope (AFM, XE-100, Park Systems, Korea). In a solution with citric acid, the zeta potential of the alumina surface was changed to a negative value due to the adsorption of negative citrate ions. However, the hydrous Ru oxide, which has positive surface charge, could be formed on Ru surface in citric acid solution at pH 6 and 8. At pH 6 and 8, relatively low particle removal efficiency was observed in citric acid solution due to the attractive force between the Ru surface and particles. At pH 10, the lowest adhesion force and highest cleaning efficiency were measured due to the repulsive force between the contaminated alumina particle and the Ru surface. The highest PRE was achieved in citric acid solution with NaIO4 below 0.01 M at pH 10.
