  • Some aspects of the change in the rate of gall formation on the red pine, Pinus densiflora Siebold et Zuccarini, by the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye, were investigated at the coastal area in Chung Nam-Do from 1977 to 1982, and were analyzed with the nationwide survey data for 2 years from 1980 to 1981. The results obtained were as follows; the gall formation rate in several areas was compared between two consecutive generations. Four regression equations were established, with X as the gall formation rate in N year and Y as that in (N+1) year: 1) Y=11.2+1.15X (r=0.833) for the stands facing north on the phase of insect population increase, 2) Y=14.3+0.82X (r=0.739) for the stands facing south on the phase of population increase, 3) Y=7.3+0.46X (r=0.478) for stands facing north on the phase of population decrease and 4) Y=11.4+0.19X (r=0.086) for stands facing south on the phase of population decrease. After invasion of the pine needle gall midge into a red pine forest, gall formation rate increased for 6 consecutive generations and then decreased to low level within a period of another 6 years.

  • NdFeB films have been grown onto Si(100) substrate by a KrF pulsed laser ablation of the targets of $Nd_xFe_{90.98-x}B_{9.02}$ (x=17.51~27.51) at the substrate temperature of 620~700 $^{\circ}C$ and the laser beam energy density of 2.75~5.99 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The films exhibit no preferred orientation, however, good hard magnetic properties were produced from as-deposited condition : $4{\pi}M_s$=7 kG, $4{\pi}M_r$=4 kG, and $H_c$=300~1000 Oe. The depositon rate was not greatly influenced by changing the substrate temperature, but it increases linearly by increasing the beam energy density. The beam energy density of 3 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ gave the optimal condition to have the highest $4{\pi}M_r$ and $H_c$ as well. The higher content of Nd induces a higher coercivity and $4{\pi}M_r$ at the same time without prominent change in $4{\pi}M_s$.

  • A new type of DTPA-bis-amides (L1-L4) and their Gd(III)-complexes of the type $[Gd(L)(H_2O)]{\cdot}nH_2O$ (5: L1; 6: L2; 7: L3; 8: L4) have been prepared and characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The X-ray crystal structure of 8 has been determined for structural confirmation. The coordination geometry adopts a tricapped trigonal prism geometry with L4 acting as a chelate octadentate and a water molecule in the coordination sphere. Crystals are monoclinic, $P2_1$, a = 14.468(3), b = 19.235(4), c = 13.527(2) $\AA$ $\beta$ = $107.245(3)^{\circ}$, V = 3595.2(11) $\AA^3$, Z = 4, $D_{calc}$ = 1.570. Significant increases in relaxivities are observed with 6 and 7 as compared with that of $Omniscan^{(R)}$, a commercial MR agent: R1 = 12.46 $mM^{-1}\;s^{-1}$, R2 = 8.76 $mM^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ for 6; R1 = 12.77 nm-1 s-1, R2 = 7.60 mM-1 s-1 for 7; R1 = 4.9 $mM^{-1}\;s^{-1}$, R2 = 4.8 $mm^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ for $Omniscan^{(R)}$. In the case of 5, however, both R1 and R2 are found to be lower to show 2.09 $mM^{-1}\;s^{-1}$, and 1.82 $mM^{-1}\;s^{-1}$, respectively.

  • The crystal structure of arc melted $ZrV_{x}Mn_{1-x}Ni_{1.0},\;ZrV_{x}Mn_{0.8-x}Ni_{1.2},\;ZrV_{x}Mn_{0.6-x}Ni_{1.4}$ alloys which are known to have AB2 type Laves structure was investigated. They had mixed phases of C14 and C15. The radius ratio ($r_{A}/r_{B}$) of atoms in A site to that of B site was found to be an important parameter in explaining the omposition dependence of the crystal structure The C15 structure showed a linear increase with the ratio in as-cast conditions. However, the annealed alloys revealed a definite ratio at which the stability of both phases are divided distinctly. The composition of the alloys could be closely controlled by maintaining the argon pressure in the chamber over 1 arm during arc melting. In contrast, the alloy ingot melted in VIM showed a significant loss of hln.

  • The tetranuclear complexes, $X_2[M_{O4}O_12{R'C(NH_2)NO}_2](X= n-Bu_4N^+$, $R'=(CH_3)_2CH$, $CH_3CH_2CH_2$, $CH_3SCH_2$; $X=(CH_3)_2CHC(=NH_2)NH_2^+$, $R'=(CH_3)_2CH$; $X = CH_3CH_2CH_2C(=NH_2)NH_2^+$, $R'=CH_3_CH_2CH_2$; $X=CH_3SCH_2C(=NH_2)NH_2^+$, $R'=CH_3SCH_2)$ have been synthesized by the reactions of monomeric and polynuclear complexes with isobutyl-, butyl- and thiomethylacetamidoxime. The prepared complexes were identified by elemental analysis, infrared, $^1H$ NMR and $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy. The structure of complex ${(CH_3)_2CHC(NH_2)_2}_2[M_{O4}O_{12}{(CH_3)_2CHC(NH_2)NO}_2]$ was determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Crystal data are follows: Monoclinic, $P2_{1/c}$, $a=10.168(3){\AA}$, $b=11.768(1){\AA}$, $c=13.557(1){\AA}$, ${\beta}=102.08(1)^{\circ}$, $V=1586.2(5){\AA}^3$, Z=2, final R=0.026 for 2951($F_0>3s(F_0)$). This complex is composed of a planar cyclic $[Mo_4({\mu}-O)_4]$ and two ${\mu}_4$-amidoximate.

  • We report several experimental data capable of evaluating the amorphous-to-crystalline (a-c) phase transformation in $(Ag)_x(Ge_2Sb_2Te_5)_{1-x}$ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1) thin films prepared by a thermal evaporation. The isothermal a-c structural phase changes were evaluated by XRD, and the optical transmittance was measured in the wavelength range of $800{\sim}3000$ nm using a UV-vis-IR spectrophotometer. A speed of the a-c transition was evaluated by detecting the reflection response signals using a nano-pulse scanner with 658 nm laser diode (power P = $1{\sim}17$ mW, pulse duration t = $10{\sim}460$ ns). The surface morphology and roughness of the films were imaged by AFM. It was found that the crystallization speed was so enhanced with an increase of Ag content. While the sheet resistance of c-phase $(Ag)_x(Ge_2Sb_2Te_5)_{1-x}$ was similar to that of c-phase $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ (i.e., $R_c{\sim}10{\Omega}/{\square}$), the sheet resistance of a-phase $(Ag)_x(Ge_2Sb_2Te_5)_{1-x}$ was found to be lager than that of a-phase $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$, $R_a{\sim}5{\times}10^6{\Omega}{/\square}$. For example, the ratios of $R_a/R_c$ for $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ and $(Ag)_{0.1}(Ge_2Sb_2Te_5)_{0.9}$ were approximately $5{\times}10^5$ and $5{\times}10^6$, respectively.

  • Crystal-chemical study of hexagonal 7$\AA$ phyllomanganate minerals reveals that they have hexagonal layer structures with variable c dimensions which depend on the nature of interlayer cations and content of water molecules between edge-sharing [MnO6] octahedral layers. Approximately one out of nine octahedral sites is statistically vacant, leading to the general unit cell formula R2xMn4+1-xO2.nH2O, where R=Ca, Mn2+, Mg, K, Na;x=0.09-0.14 ; n-0.37-0.84. Z=1. The minerals of this formula fall under the name of rancieite group. It includes Ca-diminant (rancieite), Mn2+-dominant (takanelite), Na-dominant (birnessite), and Mg-dominant members. Minerals of the rancieite group occur predominantly in two different hydration states, i.e., n shows the values around 0.35 and 0.75. It is suggested that minerals of higher hydration state be called as species(i.e., rancieite, etc.) and those of lower hydration state be called as dehydrated varieties(i.e., dehydrated rancieite,etc.).

  • The G-banding patterns of normal and of delayed spiralized chromosomes by BUdR were investigated in three established cell lines of dwarf hamsters. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The number of G-bands appeared in Chinese hamster T-233 cell line was 65. The centromeric dark band was found in No.1 chromosome and weakly stained bands were also observed in part of the centromeric regions of Nos. 2, 3, 8 and $X_2$ chromosomes. Two homologous X chromosomes were found in different banding patterns. Terminal dark bands were shown in No. 1 chromosome. No conspicuous bands appeared in No. 10 chromosome. 2. Eighty four bands appeared in Armenian hamster Y-1249 cell line. Centromeric dark bands were observed in Nos. 5 and 10 chromosomes and moderatly stained bands were also found in near the centromeric region of the long arms of Nos. 7 and 9 chromosomes. Two isomorphic X chromosomes were also distinguished by their banding patterns. 3. In Y-1313 Armenian hamster cell line, the bands were 69. No centromeric dark bands were observed in this cell line, but moderatly stained bands appeared in the centromeric area in the long arm of No. 9 chromosome. The banding patterns of these two cell lines of Armenian hamster were quite different and readily distinguished. Only No. 8 chromosome showed similar G-banding patterns. Although Nos. 5, 7 abd 8 chromosomes revealed the same number of bands in these two cell lines, the location and staining intensity were quite different. 4. Chromosomes of Nos. 1, 2, 6, $X_1$ and $X_2$ in T-233 cell line and of 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, $X_1$ and $X_2$ in both cell lines of Armenian hamster were found to be elongated due to the inhibition of mitotic spiralization by BUdR. G-banding patterns of these chromosomes were found to be identical to those of normal chromosomes in these cell lines.

  • Purpose: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of sucrose containing 2 different levels of xylooligosaccharide on the glycemic index (GI) and blood glucose response in healthy adults. Methods: Healthy adults (4 male participants and 6 female participants, n = 10) were randomized to receive glucose, sucrose, sucrose containing 7% xylooligosaccharide active elements (Xylo 7), or sucrose containing 10% xylooligosaccharide active elements (Xylo 10). Each participant was administrated one of these materials once a week for 8 weeks and an oral glucose tolerance test was performed. Results: We found a reduction in the glycemic response to sucrose that included xylooligosaccharide active elements (Xylo 7 and Xylo 10). The glycemic indices of sucrose, Xylo 7 and Xylo 10 were 68.9, 54.7, and 52.5, respectively. The GI values of Xylo 7 and Xylo 10 were similar to that of foods with low GI. The percentage reduction of GI value caused by sucrose containing xylooligosaccharide active elements was significantly different and dose-dependent as compared to that caused by sucrose alone (p < 0.05). The reduction in the glycemic response to Xylo 7 and Xylo 10 was 21% and 24%, respectively, as compared to the glycemic response to sucrose. The attenuation of the glycemic response to Xylo 10 tended to be higher than that for Xylo 7 when the percentage of body fat was increased. Conclusion: These results demonstrated that xylooligosaccharide active elements may be effective in protecting humans against overconsumption of sucrose.
