  • Based on the assumption that film density increases exponentially with exposure in the industrial radiographic film. an equation representing the characteristic curves of industrial radiographic films and a new density-thickness relation are suggested. The accuracy and reliability of the suggested relation has been tested using radiographs of a carbon steel step wedge with known thickness variation by polychromatic X-ray and ${\gamma}$-ray ($Ir^{192}$). The experimental results were well agreed to the proposed relation in the range of film densities from 1.0 to 3.5 and it was more accurate than the conventional relation. It is also found that ${\gamma}$-ray is more effective in this purpose than polychromatic X-ray, which results in variation of effective linear absorption coefficient due to beam hardening effect as thickness increases. Therefore using the equation and experimentally determined parameters the quantitative evaluation of thickness variation is possible and it can be used to evaluate the depth of local corrosion of pressure vessels in plants.

  • In diagnostic radiology, the imaging system has been changed from film/screen to digital system. However, the method for removing scatter radiation such as anti-scatter grid has not kept pace with this change. Therefore, authors have devised the indirect flat panel detector (FPD) system with net-like lead in substrate layer which can remove the scattered radiation. In clinical context, there are many radiographic examinations with angulated incident X-ray. However, our proposed FPD has net-like lead foil so the vertical lead foil to the angulate incident X-ray would have bad effect on its performance. In this study, we identified the effect of vertical/horizontal lead foil component on the novel system's performance and improved the structure of novel system for clinical usage with angulated incident X-ray. Grid exposure factor and image contrast were calculated to investigate various structure of novel system using Monte Carlo simulation software when the incident X-ray was tilted ($0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$ from the detector plane). More photons were needed to obtain same image quality in the novel system with vertical lead foil only then the system with horizontal lead foil only. An optimal structure of novel system having different heights of its vertical and horizontal lead foil component showed improved performance compared with the novel system in a previous study. Therefore, the novel system will be useful in a clinical context with the angulated incident X-ray if the height and direction of lead foil in the substrate layer are optimized as the condition of conventional radiography.

  • This study aimed to propose a methodology for quantitatively analyzing problems resulting from the performance and combination of the ionization chamber when using an automatic exposure control (AEC) and to optimize the performance of the digital radiography (DR). In the experimental method, the X-ray quality of the parameters used for the examination of the abdomen and pelvis was evaluated by percentage average error (PAE) and half value layer (HVL). Then, the stability of the radiation output and the image quality were analyzed by calculating the entrance surface dose (ESD) and entropy when the three ionization chambers were combined. As a result, all of the X-ray quality of the digital radiography used in the experiment showed a percentage average error and a half value layer in the normal range. The entrance surface dose increased in proportion to the combination of chambers, and entropy increased in proportion to the combination of ionization chambers except when three chambers were combined. In conclusion, analysis using entrance surface dose and entropy was found to be a useful method for evaluating the performance and combination problems of the ionization chamber, and the optimal performance of the digital radiography can be maintained when two or less ionization chambers are combined.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of body mass index (BMI) on entrance surface air kerma (ESAK) in abdominal X-ray radiography using automatic exposure control (AEC). This study included 321 patients who underwent abdominal X-ray using AEC, and we correlated ESAK with height, weight, BMI and compared mean ESAK according to BMI grades (Underweight, Normal, Overweight, Obese 1, Obese 2). As a result, Weight ($R^2=0.777$, p<.001) and BMI ($R^2=0.835$, p<.001) were positively associated with ESAK, but no significant association was found between height ($R^2=0.075$, p<.001) and ESAK. The mean ESAK with respect to BMI grades showed statistically significant difference and in the post-hoc analysis, the existence of 5 subgroups at the significance level of 0.05 indicated that there were differences in the ESAK in all BMI grades. Also, as the increment of ESAK between two neighboring BMI grades increases from Underweight to Obese 2, the exposure dose dramatically increased as the BMI increased. Thus, an excessive exposure dose due to increasing BMI when using AEC should be acknowledged and Efforts to reduce dose should be taken, such as: by fixing the exposure conditions.

  • This study describes the processes undertaken for the conservation treatment of metal artifacts excavated in Hasong-ri, Yeongwol, Gangwon-do and the results of the related surface composition analysis. X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) was applied to analyze the surface composition of a small gilt-bronze wind chime, two clappers, and a small gourd-shaped bronze bottle. The gourd-shaped bronze bottle was investigated using radiography to examine its internal structure. The wind chime and clappers were excavated from the same location. A gilt layer was identified on the wind chime, but surface corrosion made it difficult to identify any such layers on the clappers. The element analysis revealed that the wind chime was made of bronze in a Cu-Sn-Pb ternary system and was gilt-plated using mercury amalgam. The clappers were made from copper with a small amount of gold detected, but did not show any evidence of mercury. Since a thick corrosion layer was affixed to the surface of each clapper, it was impossible to identify the surface composition and determine if the clappers had been gilded. It is possible that the gold detected from the clappers was a foreign substance or had detached from the giltbronze wind chime buried alongside them. The small gourd-shaped bronze bottle was investigated through surface element analysis and radiography to verify if it was a type of silver bottle used as currency during the Goryeo dynasty. The radiography photography identified that a small hole in the middle of the base had been stopped up. The general surface analysis did not detect silver, which suggests that the bottle was made of bronze instead and was not one of the silver bottles used as a means of currency.

  • For the use of Indirect-conversion CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) detectors for digital x-ray radiography and their better designs, we have theoretically evaluated the spatial-frequency-dependent detective quantum efficiency (DQE) using the cascaded linear-systems transfer theory. In order to validate the developed model, the DQE was experimentally determined by the measured modulation-transfer function (MTF) and noise-power spectrum, and the estimated incident x-ray fluence under the mammography beam quality of W/Al. From the comparison between the theoretical and experimental DQEs, the overall tendencies were well agreed. Based on the developed model, we have investigated the DQEs values with respect to various design parameters of the CMOS x-ray detector such as phosphor quantum efficiency, Swank noise, photodiode quantum efficiency and the MTF of various scintillator screens. This theoretical approach is very useful tool for the understanding of the developed imaging systems as well as helpful for the better design or optimization for new development.

  • The purpose of this research was to compare and analyze image quality for each Detector of CR(Computed Radiography) and DR(Digital Radiography). The results showed that CR(AGFA MD 4.0 General plate, JAPAN) was superior to DR(HOLOGIC nDirect Ray, USA) based on the quantitative values and comparison of MTF(Modulation Transfer Function), NPS(Noise Power Spectrum), Photon fluence and DQE(Detective Quantum Efficiency) which have been widely accepted for the estimation of CR and DR. Quantitative evaluations of CR and DR system were obtained and they may be very helpful for QA and QC of general X-ray systems.

  • Inclusions in Ti investment castings are generally known to have detrimental effects on the performance of the castings. However, actual inclusions are infrequent and hard to be located. As a result, it is extremely difficult to obtain sufficient amount of fatigue test specimens of titanium investment castings having inclusions in the gage section. Thus, in-depth research of the adverse influence of inclusions is also hindered. To address this problem, a new casting methodology of specimens containing hard alpha inclusions was developed in this study. To guarantee successful introduction of an inclusion and casting, a carefully designed mold with 8 legs and a special tool were employed. After solidification, castings were cut, and X-ray radiography determined that the inclusions were successfully incorporated into the castings. The castings were further prepared to obtain multiple test specimens and they were fatigue-tested consecutively. Fractography analysis confirmed that fatigue cracks initiated at the hard alpha inclusion. In a nonlinear regression model, the fatigue life can be modeled as an exponential function with a negative exponent of the cross-sectional area of an inclusion. The fatigue life of Ti specimens containing inclusions is inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area of an inclusion.

  • Radiography is one of the important tool adopted in daily dental practice and medical diagnosis. To visualize soft tissuechange various contrast media has Been introduced. Any cavity or space can be easily determined by increasing the X-ray absorption of the cavity using the radiopaque contrast media which widely employed in medical radiography to show much of the digestive, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and renal system. The essential part of any radiopaque medium is a heavy element that can absoarb most of the X-ray beam. The element must be noninjurious and easily eliminated. Both aqueous and oil suspensions of iodine containing compounds' are available to the dental profession, for example Lipiodol and Dionosil. The study was designed to determine toxic effect of Lipiodol to the vital pulp and to confirm visualization ioprovement in pulp canal. 1. Thin mixture of Calcium hydroxide and Lipiodol was applied to 19 deep vital cavities for 24 hours. Only one case complained slight pain for short time. 2. Cotton pellet over-saturated in Lipiodol was inserted in coronal chamber of which 6 were non vital and 5 were vital. The transference of Lipiodol was not noticed in every case after 24 hours. 5 cases with vital pulp tissue in the canals showed no clinical symptome. 3. Extracted 20 teeth were routinely prepared for endodontic treatment and applied Lipiodol in conjunction with cotton fiber as deep as midportion of the roots. After 24, hours the medicament reached to nearly the end of apex, but there were no evidence of penetration in dentine layer and migrate into ramified canal.

  • The present work pertains to a research program to study Molten Fuel-Coolant Interactions (MFCI), which may occur in a nuclear power plant during a hypothetical severe accident. Dynamics of the hot liquid (melt) droplet and the volatile liquid (coolant) were investigated in the MISTEE (Micro-Interactions in Steam Explosion Experiments) facility by performing well-controlled, externally triggered, single-droplet experiments, using a high-speed visualization system with synchronized digital cinematography and continuous X-ray radiography. The current study is concerned with the MISTEE-NCG test campaign, in which a considerable amount of non-condensable gases (NCG) are present in the film that enfolds the molten droplet. The SHARP images for the MISTEE-NCG tests were analyzed and special attention was given to the morphology (aspect ratio) and dynamics of the air/ vapor bubble, as well as the melt drop preconditioning. Energetics of the vapor explosion (conversion ratio) were also evaluated. The MISTEE-NCG tests showed two main aspects when compared to the MISTEE test series (without entrapped air). First, analysis showed that the melt preconditioning still strongly depends on the coolant subcooling. Second, in respect to the energetics, the tests consistently showed a reduced conversion ratio compared to that of the MISTEE test series.
