  • $Tb_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce$ (TAG:Ce) thin films were successfully deposited by a pulsed laser ablation method on a quartz substrate, and low-temperature post-annealing effects on luminescent properties were investigated in detail. TAG:Ce thin films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The as-deposited films were amorphous, and post-annealing above $700^{\circ}C$ was required for crystallization. The post-annealed TAG:Ce thin films showed strong and broad emission bands around 542 nm and excitations at 451 nm, which all corresponded to transitions between the 4f ground level to the $5d^1$ excited levels of Ce ion.

  • Be-doped GaSb layers were grown on highly mismatched semi-insulating GaAs substrate (001) with $2^{\circ}$ offcut towards <110> at low growth temperature, by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The influence of Be doping on the crystallographic quality, surface morphology, and electrical properties, was assessed by X-ray diffraction, Nomarski microscopy, and Hall effect measurements, respectively. Be impurities are well behaved acceptors with hole concentrations as high as $9{\times}10^{17}cm^{-3}$. In addition, the reduction of GaSb lattice parameter with Be doping was studied.

  • Nanoporous carbon structures were synthesized by pyrolysis of grass as carbon precursor. The synthesized carbon has high surface area and pore volume. The carbon products were acid functionalized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, transmission electron microscopy, and Energy Dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Acid functionalized nanoporous carbon was explored for use in removal of toxic Cr(VI) ions from aqueous media. An adsorption study was done as a function of initial concentration, pH, contact time, temperature, and interfering ions. The experimental equilibrium data fits well to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 35.335 mg/g. The results indicated that removal obeys a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and that equilibrium was reached in 10 min. A desorption study was done using NaOH. The results of the present study imply that acid functionalized nanoporous carbon synthesized from grass is an efficient, renewable, cost-effective adsorbent material for removal of hexavalent chromium due to its faster removal rate and reusability.

  • Diamond films have been achieved on Si(100) substrates using helicon plasma chemical vapor deposition(HPCVD), Gas mixtures with methane and hydrogen have been used. The growth characteristics were investigated by means of X-ray photoelectroton spectroscopy, Atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. We obtained a plasma density as high as 10$\^$10/~10$\^$11/ cm$\^$-3/ by helicon source. The smooth(100) faces of submicron diamond crystallites were found to exhibit pyramidal shaped architecture, The XPS spectrum for the nucleation layer indicates the presence of diamond at 285.4 eV, close to the reported value of 285.5 eV for diamond , XRD results demonstrates the existence of polycrystalline diamond as the diamond (111) and (220) peaks.

  • NiO buffer layers for YBCO coated conductors were deposited on hi-axially textured Ni substrates by MOCVD(metal organic chemical vapor deposition) method, using single solution source. To establish the processing condition, oxygen partial pressure and deposition temperature were changed. The surface orientation and degree of texture were estimated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray pole figure and atomic force microscopy. The FWHMs of in-plane and out-of-plane of the NiO films were about 10$^{\circ}$. The surface roughness was a function of deposition temperature. The AFM surface roughness of NiO films is in the range of 3∼10 nm, when NiO films was grown at 450∼530$^{\circ}C$.

  • Zinc-Borosilicate(ZnO 65.0wt%, B2O3 21.5wt%, SiO2 9.0wt%, PbO or tiO2 4wt%) passivation glasses were studied using differential thermal analysis(DTA), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) observations, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and measurement of thermal expansion coefficients. Passivation glasses containing 4wt% TiO2 and 4wt% PbO had crystallization temperature of 680~73$0^{\circ}C$ and major crystalline phases were identified by X-ray diffraction as $\alpha$-ZnO.B2O3 and $\alpha$-5ZnO.2B2O3. As increasing firing temperature, the size of crystalline phases increased by observation of SEM. The thermal expansion coefficient of crystallized glass frits was smaller than that of unfired glass.

  • Characteristics of Ham Pyong clay and clay-organic complexes were investigated by means of geological exploration, chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, electron microscopy, thermal mechanical analysis, cation exchange capacity and viscosity measurement. The results are as follows; 1) This caly is a transported clay which has black and white colors, and the amounts of deposit are estimated about 1, 600, 000M/T. 2) The major mineral phases identified by X-ray diffraction are kaolinite, sericite and halloysite and the minor phases are quartz and feldspar, these mineral phases can be seperated very easily by the elutriation method. 3) It was supposed that the black colored clay involved a certain clay-organic complexs by the mechanism of intercalation as well as surface absorption. 4) The clay-organic complexes in clay seemed to improve dispersity, to increase the fluidity of clay-water slips, to decrease the firing shrinkage and to promote the thermo-chemical reaction at temperature range up to 50$0^{\circ}C$, but not to effect on the resulted firing color.

  • Microstructure and phase changes during the sintering of ZnO varistors were studied in ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Sb2O3 and ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Sb2O3-Cr2O3 systems using acanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The spinel phase and the Bi2O3 phase were formed by the decomposition of the pyrochlore phase during heating. The spinel particles (2-4$\mu\textrm{m}$), which were formed both along ther grain boundaries and within the ZnO grain, were always found near the pyrochlore phase. Intergranular phases (Bi2O3 and pyrochlore) were precipitated from the liquid phase during cooling. The Bi2O3 phases were located at the triple (or multiple) point of the ZnO grains. Cr2O3 played a role in decreasing the formation temperature of the spinel phase and Bi2O3 phase during sintering, and inhibited the grain growth.

  • 열 증착 방법을 이용하여 copper(II)-phthalocyanine(CuPc) 박막을 glass 기판 위에 제작하였다. 박막 표면 특성은 SEM(scanning microscope microscopy)을 통해 관측하였다. 열처리 조건에 따른 CuPc 박막의 전기전도도 특성은 후열 처리한 박막의 경우 예열 처리한 박막보다 전기 전도 특성이 향상되었음을 관측할 수 있었다.
