  • Polymerization of tetraethoxysilane on a glass substrate was investigated by remote microwave plasma using argon with portions of nitrous oxide as carrier gas. Transparent layer like a thickness of 0.5 ${\mu}m$ 3 ${\mu}m$ were obtained, differing in chemical composition, depending on plasma power and treatment time as well as on ageing time. In general the milder the treatment and the shorter the ageing was, the higher was the content of organic structural elements in the layer. We have identified that the chemical structure of our samples composed of mainly Si O and Si C groups containing aliphatics, carbonyl groups. These results were obtained by X ray photon spectroscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope combined with Energy dispersive X ray spectroscopy.

  • An experimental investigation with diode laser system was carried out to study the effect of surface heat treatment on the die materials(SM45C, SKD11, SK3). The surface heat treatment characteristics of the laser beam are evaluated using hardness tests, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS). Results indicated that the beam size, focal length, feed rates are changed surface hardened characteristics. SM45C is higher hardness than other materials and composed to martensite grain at hardened zone, whereas other materials(SKD11, SK3)are low hardness than expected and composed to austenite and allayed martensite at hardened zone. The intensive X-ray diffraction patterns of (110)-(200)-(211) is detected hardened surface and the hardened surface distributed plenty of carbon density than metal zone.

  • We synthesized $TiO_2$ ($Ru_x/TiO_2$) incorporating $TiO_2$ and Ru via an one-step hydrothermal method. The physical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The prepared samples were applied as a catalyst for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde using molecular oxygen ($O_2$). Especially, the catalytic activities increased as the contents of ruthenium in $TiO_2$ increased without the formation of any byproducts.

  • Magnolia kobus leaf extract was used for the synthesis of bimetallic Au core-Ag shell nanoparticles. Gold seeds and silver shells were formed by first treating aqueous solution of $HAuCl_4$ and then $AgNO_3$ with the plant leaf extract as reducing agent. UV-visible spectroscopy was monitored as a function of reaction time to follow the formation of bimetallic nanoparticles. The synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized with transmission electron microscopy(TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). TEM images showed that the bimetallic nanoparticles are a mixture of plate(triangles, pentagons, and hexagons) and spherical structures. The atomic Ag contents of the bimetallic Au/Ag nanoparticles determined from EDS and XPS analysis were 34 and 65 wt%, respectively, suggesting the formation of bimetallic Au core-Ag shell nanostructure. This core-shell type nanostructure is expected to have potential for application in surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and in the sensitive detection of biomolecules.

  • OBJECTIVES : In this study, microstructural components of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) binder were investigated using environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). To clearly understand the elemental composition of the CRMA binder, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was employed on the ESEM samples. METHODS : CRMA binders were produced using open blade mixers at $177^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The binders were artificially aged through a series of accelerated aging processes. Sample preparation was done by making a mold shape on the glass slide. Thereafter, the morphology of the CRMA binder was observed using the ESEM coupled with the EDX. RESULTS : The images captured from the ESEM indicate that the unaged CRMA binder appears to have a single-phase continuous nonuniform structure after the addition of crumb rubber particles, whereas the artificially aged CRMA binder was observed to have two different phases. ESEM coupled with EDX shows detailed internal structure of the modified binders compared to other technologies (i.e., optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and conventional scanning electron microscope). CONCLUSIONS : The captured images resemble the internal structures such as the viscous properties of the unaged CRMA binder and the interaction between the rubber particles and the base binder at aged condition. ESEM is a powerful instrument and with the introduction of EDX, it provided more details of the network microstructure of the asphalt binder. ESEM coupled with EDX is recommended for use in future investigation of microstructure of asphalt binders.

  • Purpose: The current gold standard for clinical jawbone formation involves autogenous bone as a graft material. In addition, demineralized dentin can be an effective graft material. Although demineralized dentin readily induces heterotopic bone formation, conventional decalcification takes three to five days, so, immediate bone grafting after extraction is impossible. This study evaluated the effect of vacuum ultrasonic power on the demineralization and processing of autogenous tooth material and documented the clinical results of rapidly processed autogenous demineralized dentin (ADD) in an alveolar defects patient. Methods: The method involves the demineralization of extracted teeth with detached soft tissues and pulp in 0.6 N HCl for 90 minutes using a heat controlled vacuum-ultrasonic accelerator. The characteristics of processed teeth were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Bone grafting using ADD was performed for narrow ridges augmentation in the mandibular area. Results: The new processing method was completed within two hours regardless of form (powder or block). EDS and SEM uniformly demineralized autotooth biomaterial. After six months, bone remodeling was observed in augmented sites and histological examination showed that ADD particles were well united with new bone. No unusual complications were encountered. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the possibility of preparing autogenous tooth graft materials within two hours, allowing immediate one-day grafting after extraction.

  • This study was conducted to identify the geographical origin of soybeans in Cheonggukjang by analyzing its organic components and inorganic elements with Fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIRS) and with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. For method development, 280 samples from various regions were collected and analyzed. The discriminant accuracy for the developed methods was 97.5% for FT-NIRS and 98.0% for ED-XRF with multivariate statistical analysis. A validation test confirmed the discriminant accuracy to be 96.3% for FT-NIRS and 95.0% for ED-XRF. Overall, the results showed that methods using FT-NIRS and ED-XRF could be used to identify the geographical origin of Cheonggukjang.
