  • Various metallic materials are coated on Fe base materials via thermal spraying or welding process to improve both corrosion resistance as well as erosion resistance of the Fe base materials used in buildings and special works. The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the coat are estimated by means of hardness measurement and anodic polarization test. In additions, the effect of alloying elements and microstructure of the coatings on the mechanical and chemical properties of the coat is investigated using X- ray diffraction, Optical microscope, Transmission electron microscopy and Auger analysis. The coating deposited by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding exhibit a good combination of hardness and corrosion properties.

  • The report of an investigation into the performance of mortar specimens made with recycled fine aggregate (RA) exposed to sodium sulfate solution for 360 days is presented in this paper. Mechanical properties of mortar specimens such as visual examination, compressive strength, expansion and mass loss were periodically monitored. From the test results, it was found that mortar specimens with higher replacement levels of Rh exhibited poor performance in sodium sulfate solution. However, compared to mortar specimens without RA, those with lower replacement levels of RA (up to 50% by mass) was more resistant to sulfate attack. Through the x-ray diffraction analysis, it was confirmed that the main products causing sulfate deterioration in RA mortar specimens were the formation of gypsum and thaumasite.

  • In this study, an electro-catalyst of Pt nanoparticles supported by polypyrrole-functionalized graphene (Pt/PPy-reduced graphene oxide [RGO]) is reported. The Pt nanoparticles are deposited on the PPy-RGO composite by chemical reduction of H2PtCl6 using NaBH4. The presence of graphene (RGO) caused higher activity. This might have been due to increased electro-chemically accessible surface areas, increased electronic conductivity, and easier charge-transfer at polymer-electrolyte interfaces, allowing higher dispersion and utilization of the deposited Pt nano-particles. Microstructure, morphology and crystallinity of the synthesized materials were investigated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed successful deposition of Pt nano-particles, with crystallite size of about 2.7 nm, on the PPy-RGO support film. Catalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation in fuel cells was investigated using cyclic voltammetry. The fundamental electrochemical test results indicated that the electro-catalytic activity, for methanol oxidation, of the Pt/PPy-RGO combination was much better than for commercial catalyst.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of AFm formation on the stiffening process of cement paste. High and low alkali sulfate clinkers were used for the experiments. The flow and stiffening behavior of cement paste was investigated using modified ASTM C403 penetration resistance test and oscillatory shear rheology. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was used for phase identification associated with stiffening of the paste. It was found from the results that low alkali clinker mixture produced very strong premature stiffening whereas high alkali clinker mixture did not cause premature stiffening. This is because of the large amount of alkali sulfate present in the clinker. Addition of calcium and sodium chloride to the high alkali clinker mixture caused faster stiffening and set.

  • The influence of electric current on the joining properties of aluminum and copper was investigated. Various pulsed electric current conditions were set to the joining specimens followed by pressure. The shear strength of the joint area between aluminum and copper was measured by the lab shear test. In addition, the microstructures of the joint area were observed through a field emission scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray, and electron backscatter diffraction. The mechanical properties of each phase in the joint region were measured by nano-indentation. As a result, it was confirmed that electrically assisted solid state joining of copper and aluminum could be applied in various industrial fields.

  • Recently, as it has greatly increased the demand on the serviceability of subway, cable tunnel and underground storage, the stability of tunnel structures has been attracting the concern of engineers and researchers. Thus the aim of the present study is to evaluate acid attack resistance of shotcrete using in tunnel structures. And, in order to understand the deterioration mechanism, test using scanning electron microscopy(SEM) analysis and X-ray diffraction showed that the deterioration mechanism due to acid attack in shotcrete.

  • The andalusite that can be found in mica shist near YunChun deposits were studied by means of an optical microscope, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis of DTA and TGA, chemical analysis and refractoriness test to find out an appropriate method of concentration and purification for the utilization as a raw material of high alumina refractories, with the results: 1. The andalusite are has chiefly contained andalusite, muscovite and biotitei in addition to small amounts of chlorite, kyanite, disapore, quartz, alumandite adn pyrite, which vary from sample to sample. 2. Most of andalusite have occurred as light-red colored columns which are estimated to be an average of 4 by 0.5m/m in length. 3. Samples of andalusite which were dressed by cobbing and hand picking in the deposits have contained an average of 42% andalusite.

  • Fe-base amorphous alloy and two crystalline phases composite were fabricated. The effect of temperature and strain rate on mechanical properties was evaluated utilizing compression test. Mixture of non-crystalline and crystalline phases were found using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) tests. Based on glass transition temperature and crystallization temperature. compression tests were performed in the temperature ranging from $560^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ with $20^{\circ}C$ interval. Relationship between microstructure, including fracture surface morphology, and mechanical behavior was studied. The peak stress of Fe-base amorphous alloy was over 2GPa and expected to have a good wear resistance, but it is expected hard to deform because of low ductility. The peak stress and elongation of two crystalline phases composite was over 1GPa and about 20%, therefore it is possible to deform high strength wear resistant materials such as engine valve.

  • Eutrophication caused by the excessive supply of phosphorus to water has been considered as one of the most important environmental problems. In this study, the titanium mesostrcture, which was prepared with the template of different surfactant, was tested to confirm the applicability as an adsorbent for phosphorus removal and evaluate the phosphorus removal efficiency. X-ray diffraction analysis, phosphorus adsorption istotherm and kinetic test were performed for the titanium mesostructure, synthesized at various base material/surfactant molar ratio and with different surfactant templates. From the results, we found that mesostructure was synthesized at the base material/surfactant molar ratio of 1/0.25 was most uniformly and clearly formed and thus the adsorption capacity was also maximized.
