  • The adsorption of iodide on untreated bentonite and bentonites modified with organic cation (i.e., hexadecylpyridinium chloride monohydrate ($HDP^+$)) was investigated, and the organobentonites were characterized using uptake measurements, ${\mu}$-XRD, and electrophoretic mobilities measurement. Uptake measurements indicate that bentonite has a high affinity for $HDP^+$. Our ${\mu}$-XRD study indicates that organobentonites significantly expanded in basal spacing and organic cations were substantially intercalated into the interlayer spaces of bentonite. The electrophoretic mobility indicates that organobentonite tht is modified with organic cations in excess of the CEC of bentonite is completely different from untreated bentonite in the surface charge distribution. We found significant differences in adsorption capacities of iodide depending on the bentonite properties as follows: iodide adsorption capacities were 439 mmol/kg for the bentonite modified with $HDP^+$ at an equivalent amount corresponding to 200% of the CEC of bentonite whereas no adsorption of iodide was observed for the untreated bentonite. The molecular environments of iodine adsorbed on organobentonites were further studied using I K-edge and $L_{III}$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of iodine spectra from organobentonites was similar to that of KI reference solution. Linear combination fitting of EXAFS data suggests the fraction of iodine reacted with the organic compound increased with increasing loading of the organic compound on organobentonites. In this study, we observed significant differences in the adsorption environments of iodide depending on the modified property of bentonite and suggest that an organobentonite has potential as reactive barrier material around a nuclear waste repository containing anionic radioactive iodide.

  • The Gemological characteristics of B.C. jade from Cassiar Mine, British Colombia, Canada, have been investigated, using polarizing microscopy, Mohs' hardness, refractive index and density measurements, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, ICP-MS, Infrared absorption spectrometry, and DTA/TGA. The B.C. jade is deeply green (spinach peen or olive green) in color and is translucent. It shows a resinous or waxy luster. The principal mineral of the material is tremolite-actinolite solid solution and minor amount of Cr-garnet and unidentified opaque minerals are accompanied. Mohs' hardness value ($5.5{\sim}6$). refractive index (1.62), and specific gravity (3.01) are measured. It is very highly tough and shows hackly fracture. The high Fe content ($Fe_2O_3\;4.14{\sim}4.66\;wt%$) in B.C. jade is attributable to a deepening of green color of the material. The B.C. jade starts to dehydrate at v and dehydration is completed at $1000.8^{\circ}C$, transforming tremolite-actinolite solid solution to enstatite, diopside, quartz, and water in its place. This possible reaction is supported by the weight loss of B.C. jade (1.93 wt%) at $1000.8^{\circ}C$ indicated by TGA curve.

  • The Samsung mine is located in Jeongsan-myeon, Cheongyang-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and is produces sericite ores. The purpose of this study is to investigate the geology and mineralogy of sericite one and its host-rock together with the alteration processes and age of sericitization. Geological survey, polarizing microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, X-ray fluorescent analysis, differential thermal analysis, and K/Ar isotope study have been employed for this study. The mine area is composed of Precambrian granite-gneiss and mica schist, and also Jurassic biotite granite. Serictization has occured within the granite-gneiss, and is interpreted to be formed by hydrothermal alteration. The sericite was formed by the breakdown of orthoclase, plagioclase, and biotite, respectively. With sericitization intensity increase, $SiO_2\;and\;Na_2O$ contents are decreased, while $Al_2O_3\;and\;K_2O$ increased. The formation age of sericite has been determined to be Jurassic, which corresponds well to the intrusion age of the biotite granite nearby.

  • Mineralogical and chemical examinations were performed on interstratified illite-smectite (I-S) minerals that occur in the mudstones from a petroleum exploration well in the Tertiary marine basin, Japan. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that component layers of illite in the interstratified I-S increase with increasing burial depth while those of smectie decrease. In addition, the randomly (R=0) interstratified illite-smectite is changed into Rp1 ordered I-S at a depth of about 4,000 m, which corresponds to the result of organic analysis and indicates a burial temperature of about $100^{\circ}C$. However, the present geothermal gradient shows that the conversion of the random I-S to R=0 ordered I-S is likely to occur at 3,000 m. This discrepancy may be interpreted by the reverse fault at 2,500 m which resulted in a deeper burial of sediments up to 1,000 m. Chemical analysis also shows the compositional variation in I-S with increasing depth: a decrease in Si and an increases in Al and K, indicating that the substitution of Al for Si in tetrahedral sheets is compensated by the addition of K to interlayers. K may be derived from K-feldspar and micas, which is present in the mudstones.

  • The pyrophyllite deposits located in Jinhae area have been studied through field observations and laboratory works including the X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). The pyrophyllite deposits consist of mainly illite, dickite, pyrophyllite, diaspore, chlorite, pyrite and copiapite. According to the mineral assemblages, geological occurrences and alteration modes, the altered rocks can be classified into four types: Type A; quartz with silicifictaion, Type B; quartz + illite with illitization, Type C; quartz + dickite + illite with kaolin alteration, Type D; pyrophyllite + illite + dickite + diaspore with pyrophyllite alteraion. Rocks in Type A, which is generated by silicifictaion, have high $SiO_2$ contents more than 90 wt% and distinctive equigranular textures with microcrtstalline quartz. The pyrophyllites from the study area belong to 2M polytype. The host rocks of the pyrophyllite ore in this mine are rhyolitic rock, andecitic tuff and volcanic breccia. The alteration products seem to be controlled by the different lithology of the host rocks. The hydrothermal solution formed the deposits would be inferred to the acidic and have relatively high ionic activity of hydrogen and silica judging from alteration mineral assemblage. Pyrophyllite alteraion zone is generated by highest temperature condition of all alteration zone.

  • Mineral compositions of the Gyeonggi Bay surface sediments were determined using the high resolution X-ray diffractometer and Siroquant v. 3.0 program. Surface sediments are composed of rock forming minerals (quartz 63.8%, plagioclase 12.9%, alkali feldspar 11.7%, muscovite 4.3%, amphibole 1.2%, biotite 0.5% on average), clay minerals (illite 2.4%, chlorite 1.4%, kaolinite 0.4%) and carbonate minerals (calcite 0.1%, aragonite 0.3%). Coarse sediments are high in the northern, southern and central parts of the study area, whereas fine sediments are high in the northern and southern parts of the central area. Coarse sediments have relatively a high quartz content in the northern part, and relatively high plagioclase and muscovite contents in the southern part of the study area. In the southern part and the northern part of central area, fine sediments have relatively a high illite content, and chlorite and kaolinite contents, respectively.

  • Organic smectite was hydrothermally synthesized by treating the opal-rich siliceous mudstone from the Pohang area with TMAOH solutions and 1:1 solutions of TMAOH+NaOH at $80^{\circ}C$ and concentrations ranging 10∼15%. Smectite was solely formed without accompanying any mineral products in case of TMAOH, whereas NaP and hydroxysodalite was synthesized together with smectite under the blending solution of TMAOH+NaOH. The synthesized smectite is identified as an organic smectite intercalating $TMA^{+}$ within its interlayer site, specifically corresponding to monmorillonite species, through mineralogical characterization by XRD, DTA, and IR analyses. The experimental results indicate that main precursor of the synthesized smectite is undoubtedly opal-CT, and the original sedimentary smectite included as considerable amounts in the mudstone seems to play a major role as Al-sources necessary far the smectite formation. Original inert components such as quartz and mica do not affect mostly to the synthesis reaction, and thus, are resultantly found as impurities in the synthetic products. These experimental results may imply that a new effective method for the low-temperature (less than $100^{\circ}C$) hydrothermal synthesis of organic smectite will be established if some Al-sources adequate for this synthetic system are available.

  • In the Pohang-Gampo area, several diatomite beds occurred in mostly thinner than 1 m are embedded in the Pohang Formation of marine environment and the pyroclastic Eoil Formation. The diatomite from the Eoil Formation is constituting the high-grade ore altered slightly by diagenesis. In contrast, the diatomite intercalated within the upper horizon of the Yeonil Group is comparatively low-grade and highly altered in places. During diagenesis, an increasing of crystallinity of opal, i.e., the original mineral component of diatom, results in ultimately the mineral transition to quartz with accompanying a drastic change in morphology and texture of the altered diatomite. The diagenetic alteration appears to have undergone by way of the chemical diagenesis, which is largely controlled by degree of fluid contact, rather than burial diagenesis. For the diatomite from the Pohang-Gampo area, careful SEM observations, XRD, chemical analyses, and determination of specific surface area were done to identify the fossil species, mineral and chemical composition, and other physical properties in the view of assesment of grade and quality. The domestic diatomite ores are evaluated to be not good in grade and quality, compared to those of famous foreign localities. However, some diatomite deposits of marin,: origin from the Pohang Formation is constituting a peculiar clay-rich type, i.e., moler applicable to the special usage such as a manufacturing of lightweight brick. Because such a diatomite is frequently intercalated relatively as a thicker bed in the upper part of the Yeonil Group, a systematic and careful investigation should be done for the exploitation and development of an economic diatomite deposit of the moler type.

  • Conservation Science Lab. of the National Museum of Korea recovered Bamboo-plated inkstone case which is used for keeping inkstick, inkstone and inkstone water container by using traditional lacquering and wooden art technology. Texture and construction method of wood, ingredients for lacquering and the method, and the design were analyzed in order to restore the original manufacturing method. Especially, perfect restoration of partially damaged lacquer surface is the most important aspect in restoring Bamboo plated inkstone case, therefore focus was put on investigation of surface lacquering. First, lacquering surface sample was taken off from the object and processed into flake and observed with transmission microscope in order to investigate lacquering method and the pigment in the lacquering surface was analyzed with XRD and SEM-EDS. The result showed that the object was decorated with thin-layered bamboo in the surface which is made of Royal paulownio. and lacquered several times with the mixture of Hematite(Fe2O3) and Cinnabar(HgS) in the remaining part.

  • In conclusion, a high-Tc superconducting YBa sub(2) Cu sub(3) O sub(y) phase with zero resistance at about 90K was successfully prepared by nitrate solution method with densed micro structure. The result of the EDAX analysis on the isolated particles using the microscopic meissner effect showed that the particles were isolated at higher temperature due to the differences in O vacances rather than the differences in chemical compositions. The composition of the isolated particles were almost identical to the starting compositions on the samples prepared by the solid reaction and nitrate solution method but the Ba-rich composition were seen in the coprecipitated sample. The isolation process on Bi system was not successful due to the weak dimagnetism even though its high Tc above the liquid nitrogen temperature.
