  • This study draws on data from the 1st (2005) to 6th (2015) waves of the Workplace Panel Survey regarding workplaces with labor representatives, i.e., a trade union or labor-management council, and analyzes these using a fixed effects panel data model to examine the relationship between the level of worker participation and the economic performance of workplaces. Analysis results indicate that higher levels of worker participation in an earlier time period are associated with higher per-worker value added (productivity) and per-worker labor costs (wages) at the current time period, but only up to a certain level beyond which the effect is found to decrease, thus forming an inverted-U shape pattern. Considered from a broad framework, these results are in line with the theoretical predictions by Freeman and Lazear (1995), who had established the logic behind the dynamics of the participation of labor representatives in management activities. In view of the fact that the current average level of worker participation in Korea is very low, the empirical analysis results of this study presents the policy implication that raising the level of workplace participation somewhat beyond current levels would yield improvements in economic performance in terms of the shared rent between labor and management - i.e., productivity (per-worker value added).

  • The occupational injury and illness(OII) was influenced by the various factors. This study was planned to investigate the pathway of the activities of OSHM on the rate of OII via worker's participation. The survey on the trend of the activities of OSHM was used. The sample size of manufacturing industry was 3,000 enterprises and that of construction was 1,000 enterprises. The survey was done by interview method with structure questionnaire. Questions about the activities of OHSM were integrated into one category using factor analysis. The enterprises with OII has more activities of OSHM than that without OII. Among enterprises with OII, the level of the activities of OSHM was positively correlated with the rate of OII. The activities of OSHM has influenced on the rate of OII directly and indirectly via worker's participation and the activities of prevention of accident. Worker's participation also has the direct effect and indirect effect on the rate of OII. Worker's participation in construction sector has more effect on OII than that in manufacturing sector.

  • The purpose of this study is primarily to analyse empirically the productivity effects of worker participation in capital by Korean employee stock ownership plan that had taken newly effect on and after January 1,2002, and secondarily to examine the impact of unionization on productivity. The analysis data are those of 150 firms that listed or registered on the stock market, and introduced ESOP. The result of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the worker participation in capitia have significantly a positive effect on productivity, but the magnitude of those effects vary according to estimation models and sectors. The elasticity of stock share owned by employees on productivity is from 0.03 to 0.24. Second, there is no unitary relationship between unionization and productivity. The coefficients of union dummy variable are positive or negative according to models and sectors as well as insignificant.

  • The change in labor consciousness began to draw social attention to work-life balance (WLB). The WLB is one of the major factors affecting the health and safety problems of workers. Although shiftwork adversely affects WLB, safety, and health problems of workers, WLB of shift workers has received little empirical attention. The purpose of this study was to examine whether WLB mediates the relationship between shiftwork and shift worker's safety and health problems, participation in leisure activities moderates WLB, and finally, whether WLB moderated by participation in leisure activities mediates the relationship between shift work and shift worker's safety and health problems. For the study, the data of the 5th wave of Korean Working Condition Survey(KWCS) conducted by Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency(KOSHA) of South Korea was used. Conditional process analysis revealed that the relationship between shift work and worker's safety and health problems is mediated by WLB; however, participation in leisure activity showed no moderation effect on WLB. Therefore, the moderated mediation effect has failed to achieve statistical significance. The results indicate that working environment improvement in consideration of the WLB is needed to gain shift worker's long-term safety and health. The implications of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • The risk assessment under the Occupational Safety and Health Act was implemented in 2013, but since it is not mandatory, companies are operating it as a formality. Although legal obligations have been strengthened, such as the recent comprehensive revision of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the enforcement of the Act on Punishment for Serious Accidents, the death rate has remained stagnant. Even if a risk assessment plan is properly established in order for employers to prevent industrial accidents through necessary measures, it is necessary to involve relevant workers so that they can understand and implement the contents of the risk assessment. In this regard, this study proposed applying efficient worker participation measures through on-site surveys to activate the participation of vulnerable workers in risk assessments. Key words : risk assessment, accident prevention, vulnerable class, worker participation

  • This study attempted to provide implications by analyzing the impact of business Owner's safety commitment on industrial accidents and examining the mediating role of management supervisors' safety leadership and worker participation. Analysis was conducted on 2,067 manufacturing sites with 20 to 50 employees in the 10th Occupational Safety and Health Survey data. SPSS waw used to secure the reliability of the measurement variable. Hypothesis vertification was carried out after securing the suitability and validity of the structural model using AMOS. The direct impact of three latent variables on industrial accidents was confirmed: the business owner's safety commitment, the management supervisor's safety leadership, and the worker participation. The employer's safety will and the management supervisor's safety leadership do not directly affect industial accidents, but it has been verified that worker participation has a diret impact on industrial accident reduction. In addition, it has been confirmed that the safety leadership and worker participation of the management. Supervior have a complete mediating effect on the reduction of industrial accidents by mediating with the safety leadership of the management supervior and the participation of the workers. This study analyzed the impact on industrial accidents by dividing the stakeholders constituting the workplace into three classes: business owners, superviors, and workers, but the results suggest that employers and all workers inside the workplace may be organically linked to achieving the goal of reducing industrial accidents. Therefore, in order to establish an autonomous safety management system for safety and health at workerplaces, efforts are needed to reduce industrial accidents in their respective location by forming an organic community among internal stakeholders.

  • This study compares the wage equation in Korea to those in other countries, focusing on the wage returns to adult education and training (AET) participation. It is found that the wage compensation structure in Korea is associated mainly with job characteristics such as tenure and workplace size rather than with worker characteristics such as AET participation and cognitive abilities. It is also found that Korea's AET participation is skewed toward non-job-related AET, relative to the situations in other countries. These findings imply that the link between a worker's productivity and wage should be strengthened in order to incentivize workers to invest in AET relevant to the labor market.

  • This study was designed to analyse the performance and the mechanisms of workers' participation and communications in industrial accident prevention activities leading to the reduction of industrial accidents. This study also aimed to find out the causal relationship influencing the promotion of prevention activities of industrial accidents. Of the manufacturing businesses with more than 5 workers as the population of the survey, a questionnaire was conducted with 2,500 workspaces chosen by stratified sampling. Out of 2500 workspaces, 971 workspaces equipped with industrial safety and health committee were analysed in this study. According to the results of this study, the primary influential factors on safety activities were the management of industrial accidents and the cooperations between supervisors and workers on site. The secondary influential factor was the establishment of industrial safety and health committee. Regarding the effectiveness of industrial accident reduction, -0.01 was shown by workplace safety activities by themselves and -0.09 was shown by participation and communications through indirect safety activities. This indicated workers' participation and communications play an important role in the reduction of industrial accidents. By discovering the clue to the mechanism of the workers' participation and communications, this study is expected to stimulate the reduction of industrial accidents by emphasizing the importance of workers' participation and communications in resolving the safety and health problem in the workplaces.
